the designer

As a designer, I want to showcase rebellion and edginess by making fashionable wearable armor. I want my collection to showcase unruliness. I want to push the boundaries of fashion through dark concepts and bold design choices that showcase a narrative to each collection I present. While creating designs, I aim for one goal, which is wanting people to look at my garments and see something more profound, to watch a story unfold in front of their eyes. I like the audience to feel emotion while looking at my garments, to look fur ther than the clothing itself.

While creating my recent collection, I was honored to have the opportunity to feature in Melbourne fashion week’s stu dent runway and Melbourne fashion hub which has been vital to learning more about fashion within the industry. I have tal ents in designing, illustrating, and digital technology. Coming from a background in different art mediums and being a com petitive amateur boxer and state swimmer, I have learned the love of learning while also incorporating discipline, self-mo tivation, competitiveness, and passion for success.

The collection focuses on The seven deadly sins and how it is a part of human nature. Everybody has felt pride, wrath, lust, sloth, envy, greed, and gluttony. The importance is how we learn to overrule those sins, how we learn from the mistakes of being human. The garments are designed to represent a contemporary version of female armor. Fabrics from latex to faux leather and hardware like chrome bullets, nipple pierc ings, studs, buckles, and more make women feel strong, sexy, and fearless. The garments’ silhouettes play on the hourglass figure with techniques of tailoring and structure. The collec tion celebrates the imperfections we hide. We aren’t born per fect and not born knowing the knowledge we learn as adults. We trip and fall, but we learn from the hardships.

The mood board for sanctuary for the outcast highlights “sinning.” I wanted to showcase humor with the nuns smoking back in the 60s. Using graph ics to get across spe cific wording resem bling the seven deadly sins. Many of the ter minologies are to be tongue and cheek. The hearts present the co lour palette for the collection.

Sanctuary for the outcasts is a collection inspired by the seven deadly sins to showcase people’s deep est darkest emotions, secrets, and desires

In the collection, wrath has been brought to the forefront to highlight the intense, raw, and un controllable emotion. Different shades of red are featured in the collection to create a feeling of anger, chaos, and passion. This collection provokes the truth behind the shadows.

One of the inspirations behind Wrath was a reading explaining the emotion.

Wrath starts in the depths of the chest, hitting right through the heart’s core. Sparks alight, spreading like wildfire through the body, starting from the inside and ripping through the outside flesh to grasp more oxygen to grow the licking flames. Rage takes over, and fear doesnt exist. Ev ery cell is lit aflame, tarring through the body like an earthquake. Something else comes forward that is unrecognisable. Someone has been buried under the ash, thrown and hidden far away in the self consciousness of the mind, but when she is un leashed, she refuses to retreat and be put back in her corner (Anderson, 2022 ).

Alexander McQueen greatly inspired Sanctuary for the Outcasts. McQueen showcased his emotions throughout his work, how he saw and perceived the world, ”People see my work as violent, maybe I just see the world as violent.”(McQueen, 1999 )

McQueen’s philosophy is what was inspiring, his talent for tailoring and innovative silhouettes and use of nature in his work and the gift of storytelling through his collections.

McQueen aspired to make women look powerful in the clothes he designed after witnessing his sit er experience domestic violence. ”I want people to fear the women I dress”(McQueen, 1992)

That statement is powerful, and that is what McQueen consistently achieved: making women feel strong.

The inspiration and research have developed the garment Wrath. The outfit features an important textural aspect which I believe to be Wrath and anger, being bullets. The silver bullets cover the bodice top of the hybrid mini tulip dress, as well as scattering to the miniature shoulder jacket and the mini skirt placed on top. Underneath the main outfit is a latex long sleeved cropped skin tight shirt matching with latex leggings. Buckles and zips are consistent for the fastenings in the garments, which fit the hardware of the bullet’s silver colour.

The fabrication for the main bodies is made from vegan red leather to showcase the desired struc ture and crisp shape of the dress, featuring tai loring and emphasis on volume at the bottom of the dress to highlight an hourglass figure. The outfit incorporates a mixture of lingerie and ar mor, bringing contrast but strength and sexiness to the design.

The target market for Wrath are women aged twen ty to thirty, the women wearing this have the life style of fame and influence. The garment has been designed to be seen on stages and in photoshoots. She has a busy schedule, living in a big city with ex pectations and fearlessness. She takes her career seriously and wants to thrive and succeed past her expectations. She enjoys the nightlife of art gal leries, fashion shows, events, and more but, during the day, works hard to grow her business, platform, or career.

TREND RESEARCH

Alexander McQueen’s 1998 fall collection was inspired by Joan of arc.

The show was about the catholic martyr and displayed the printed portraits of the Ro manov children. The collection expressed tragedy and sorrow. The colour of red, black, and grey gave a grime expression to the runway, highlight ing the darkness of history.

In the finale, a circle of fire gave the illu sion of the women be ing swallowed by fire to represent Joan of arc being burnt at the stacks. In the back ground, music played, Diana Ross, saying.

You’re gonna make it. You’re gonna make it, The collection in spired Sanctuary for the Outcast because of the colours and the idea of using armor and history in my final collection. I loved the chain mail idea and in corporating hardware into the designs.

Both artists have inspired the collection I believe they would wear, tailoring the garments to fit past music videos or social events they have attended.
