Abnormal Organics Abnormal Organics strives to send a message about stepping out of preconceived expectations, doing things for yourself, and not sticking with the status quo. The collection explores the structured and loose curves found in nature. The aim of Abnormal Organics is to challenge the audience’s perception, from initial confusion and apprehension to understanding and admiration. Looking at plant mutations such as fasciation, ‘flattened, elongated shoots and flower heads that look like many compressed together.’ (RHS, n.d). This random genetic mutation causes parts of plants, such as the flower heads and stems, to be misshapen. However, these mutations are still a likeness of the original plant, a reminder to be aware of where you came from and what you experienced, that it is completely normal to be different, and that it is fun doing the unexpected. The colour palette for Abnormal Organics is taken from the sunsets seen on my family’s farm. Blue and orange are often forgotten as naturally occurring complementary colours, they are found in bright
sunsets and the petals and stamen of flowers. The bright colour used through the collection is a way for the wearer to visually express themselves. In contemporary fashion it is often the default for people to stick with what is considered safe to not stand out from the crowd, but with Abnormal Organics that mould is broken. Another unique feature is the silicone-coated tulle. This innovative fabric is a great substitute for traditional latex, as it has additional strength whilst keeping the stretch and allows customers with latex allergies to wear the garments. The target audience for Abnormal Organics loves turning heads. They attend many events and desire to stand out from the crowd. The consumer also appreciates and seeks out well-made, high-quality garments.
