Blackmoor Golf Club Completes Groundbreaking Course Renovation Project

Blackmoor Golf Club has completed an extensive, three-year course improvement project which includes enhancements to all 18 holes on the Harry Colt course. The work has been carried out to upgrade bunkers and to improve drainage, the fairways have been reshaped to enhance visibility and course aesthetics and ancillary work such as new pathways and heather planting have been added.

The groundbreaking project which cost circa £500k has been implemented in three phases and designed by renowned golf course architects, LOBB & Partners who were appointed by Blackmoor Golf Club to formulise a work strategy that would restore and enhance the course.

Reinstating some of Colt’s artistry first laid out by the course architect in 1913 and employing modern techniques that support ongoing course maintenance, Blackmoor has been able to futureproof the Club and strengthen its reputation as one of the finest heathland courses in Britain.

Speaking on the project Tim LOBB Principal Architect at LOBB & Partners said: “Over the past three winters we have worked with Blackmoor Golf Club to implement our Colt-inspired bunker and heathland restoration project to the course. The Club’s dedication to continual improvement of the course and environment is no more evident than in the final product that is seen today after these works.”

“We were thrilled to be part of this team and oversee the design elements with construction by contractors Profusion Environmental. Congratulations to the Club and to Course Manager James

Norris and all the greenkeeping team for delivering an exceptional course that will grow into the construction works and for first class playing conditions.”

Alongside the heathland restoration and bunker refurbishment, work has been carried out by Blackmoor’s greenkeeping team to relocate more than 3000 m2 of heather turf to enhance the new bunkers and surrounding areas. Changes have been made to the 1st hole fairway, filling in half of the cross ditch to reinstate fairway, and the green surrounds on the 9th and 17th holes, two of the course’s notable par 3’s have been remodelled.

The project was overseen by Course Manager James Norris who commented: “We are fortunate that Blackmoor sits on sandy subsoil which helps alleviate flooding and support course drainage, however, overtime the bunkers had changed shape and the sand mix had become inconsistent. Upgrading was necessary and new liners and drainage were installed to every bunker as well as heather planting added to improve course aesthetics.

Although the major works are now complete, the course will continue to improve with our programme of maintenance and as the enhancements bed in. We have laid rubber pathways to six holes already and have plans to install pathways to the remaining 12 holes over the next four years.” Said James.

In 2018 Blackmoor completed an extensive remodelling and expansion project to its clubhouse bar and restaurant including the construction of a stunning first floor sun terrace with panoramic views over the course. The Club is an England Golf Championship venue and is home to The Selborne Salver, one of Britain’s most prestigious amateur golf events.

The par 69 course is consistently ranked within the top 100 courses in England and recognised as one of the most picturesque courses in the region. The completion of the bunker refurbishment and heathland restoration project further elevates the reputation of the Club and supports the committees’ vision to provide a strategic, enjoyable, and firstclass experience to all golfers.

Basingstoke Golf Club to unveil state-of-the-art clubhouse as membership buzz continues

All 18 holes set to be in play with new practice facilities looming as excitement builds towards full reopening in autumn 2025

Basingstoke Golf Club is moving a step closer to the completion of its full range of new facilities with the Hampshire venue ready to open its new stateof-the-art clubhouse.

The clubhouse – which will officially open on Saturday, September 14 – will feature a large bar and dining area, with a veranda that serves up panoramic views across the course. The new professional shop will also be based here, and extended changing facilities mean members will be well-catered for. Extra conference space will also allow the club to commercialise further opportunities, acting as an extra revenue stream.

Basingstoke Golf Club, which first opened for play in 1907, relocated to a new site in the village of Dummer in 2021 – moving from nearby Kempshott Park and acquiring the land that was home to Dummer Golf Club on the outskirts of the town –before work began on a new 18-hole championship course last year.

The previous layout at Dummer has been totally redesigned by Weller Designs, with the new downland course defined by a series of thrilling and undulating holes that sweep across rolling fairways, with several strategically placed water hazards adding to the test.

While the full reopening of the club is pencilled in for September 2025, 10 holes were opened to members in June, with the full 18 also opening on September 14. Development is underway on a new driving range – featuring the latest teaching and ball-tracking technology – along with a short-game area and large putting green.

The new clubhouse will serve as the focal point of the club and is a statement of a desire to be one of the finest golf venues in Hampshire and beyond, with the overall project boosted by a financial investment of more than £15million.

Architects Feilden+Mawson LLP – whose previous design work includes renovation and rebuild projects at Royal Norwich and Royal West Norfolk – have been actively involved in the project from its conceptual stage, working closely with the senior management team at Basingstoke to develop a comprehensive brief and area schedule. Through this collaboration, the architects have refined spatial relationships, ensuring the design aligns with both Basingstoke’s vision and the site's unique context.

To complement the opening of the clubhouse, a significant milestone in the development project was the completion of the greenkeepers’ building in December 2023, which has helped course manager Scott Roberts and his team to work seamlessly on the new layout.

Emily Barnston, partner at Feilden+Mawson, said: “We are extremely excited to see our vision come to fruition. One of the key design features of the

new clubhouse is the undulating roof, which flows across the facilities. When viewed from the course, the roof mirrors the colour and shape of the distant hills, anchoring the new clubhouse to its context.”

O&D Construction was the lead contractor appointed to build the clubhouse, the greenkeepers’ building and driving range. Trevor O’Brien, managing director at O&D Construction, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been involved in the creation of the new Basingstoke clubhouse. It is truly a unique building, which is sure to bring great joy to members and all who use it.

“From the initial commencement in February 2023, right up until today, it has been a delight working with the full project team. We have even been lucky enough to have members from a construction background aiding us throughout the process in ensuring the project is delivered to the members’ satisfaction.”

David Green, general manager at Basingstoke Golf Club, said: “It was so important we developed a clubhouse that has a modern feel as we look to the future, but within it will be many historical references that have been key to the character and story of Basingstoke Golf Club.

“Our interior designer, David Hales, was appointed to provide our furniture for the lounges, dining and function suite, and boardroom. David provided detailed plans for the layout, maximising the space we have and ensuring we had a good mix of seating for casual dining. We are delighted with how the furniture looks and the service provided by David’s team.

“The clubhouse is quite a sight and will offer our members the perfect spot to unwind, with stunning views overlooking the new course, especially the first and 18th holes. The practice facilities will be nearby, helping to create a hive of activity as well as being convenient for those looking to warm-up before they tee off.

“A new car park will give our members and visitors more space, while the bar area and changing rooms are spacious and comfortable. The clubhouse will also be open to visitors and non-members, making it the perfect spot for families to socialise, while our food and beverage options will heighten the experience for all.

“Our soft opening of ten holes in June proved to be the start of an exciting summer and all 18 holes will come into play as the clubhouse opens. However, there is so much more to come over the course of the next year as we build towards that full reopening in the autumn of 2025.”

Meanwhile, membership enquiries have continued in a positive manner. The club has a full prospective members’ list but is excited to be taking the established membership from the old club and building on it as it looks to create a new legacy at Basingstoke.

Golf operations manager, Tom Robson, said: “Interest in becoming a member at Basingstoke is at an all-time high. We are receiving five to 10 emails with enquiries daily. These are on top of the usual emails about society bookings and function requests. With the golf course and facilities we have built, word has spread with the journey we are on to build one of the southeast’s best golf venues.

“Basingstoke Golf Club should be the place everyone wants to come and enjoy themselves, whether it be practising on the driving range, playing an incredible golf course, or relaxing in our state-ofthe-art clubhouse.”

BIGGA teams up with The R&A to enhance annual Continue to Learn education programme

The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association’s (BIGGA) Continue to Learn education programme, which takes place each January, has received the support of The R&A as part of its commitment to a sustainable future for golf and golf courses.

Held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Continue to Learn runs alongside the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME), itself the leading trade show for golf course professionals in Europe. Continue to Learn provides more than 140 hours of learning opportunities for golf greenkeepers and groundspeople, making it among the most influential events in the golfing calendar.

The R&A is a long-time supporter of BIGGA and its members and in recent years has demonstrated its commitment to BTME and Continue to Learn by hosting presentations that offer guidance based on expert research and experience of staging major events. R&A representatives have been a mainstay on the Continue to Learn programme for many years, providing world-leading agronomic advice and hosting panel discussions in the context of historic championships held throughout the year. The Golf Course 2030 programme was launched at Continue to Learn in 2018 and research participants have returned each year to discuss their findings and proposals.

For the first time, in 2025 The R&A will be recognised as formally supporting the Continue to Learn Conference programme, which comprises of a major two-day learning event and a separate New Greenkeeper Conference. Additionally, R&A representatives will participate in various Classes and contribute towards cost-free learning opportunities such as the Seminars and the BTME Breakfast Session.

Next year (2025) will also mark the 20th anniversary of The R&A’s Greenkeeping Scholarship and events are anticipated to take place at BTME and Continue to Learn to mark the occasion. To date, over 500 greenkeepers from 30 countries have benefitted from this influential scholarship opportunity.

Jim Croxton, BIGGA CEO, said: “As a governing body for golf, representing over 61 million golfers in 145 countries, we’re proud The R&A has recognised the pivotal role greenkeepers play in the success of the sport through this commitment to supporting the Continue to Learn Conference programme and wider education opportunities provided by our annual gathering, BTME.

“Creating our annual programme of learning experiences and hosting it within the context of a massive trade show takes significant effort and we’re proud that for many years The R&A has recognised just how valuable BTME and Continue to Learn have become to the entire golfing industry. We thank everyone at The R&A for investing in our members and the wider turf management industry in this way as it will only enhance the BTME experience for everyone involved and help ensure the game is still thriving in 50 years’ time.”

Paralympic Gold Medal winner at Skipton Golf Charity day

Gregg Stevenson, from Foulridge, who won the gold medal with Lauren Rowles in the Paris Paralympics competing in the PR2 mixed double sculls, seamlessly swapped oars for golf clubs when among 15 service personnel and veterans competing in an annual charity event at Skipton Golf Club. (Mon, Sept 16)

The day again raised money for the On Course Foundation charity, which helps rehabilitate injured veterans through golf. It was the 13th event and former commando Gregg, who lost both legs to an IED in Afghanistan undergoing a double leg amputation, competed at the first one back in 2012 and several more over the years.

The 12 previous events raised £300,000 and organiser David Rasche reports that the 2024 renewal will net another magnificent windfall in the region of £20,000, with £10,000 from the post-tournament charity auction alone.

The veterans played with teams comprising business friends of David, who has organised each year’s golf day. Brought up just down the road from the golf club, David now lives in Ilkley and is a member there, as well as at Skipton.

Also there to support the veterans and players was David Llewellyn, who has coached many of 900 plus veterans that have been helped by the charity over 14 years. David was a successful tour player in his time and now coaches other professionals, as well as veterans. He has just been announced as the Captain of the PGA for 2026 - an honour given to very few.

“It was another magnificent result and thanks must go to the many businesses and individuals who have once again supported us for this extremely worthwhile cause,” said David.

Rotherham Golf Club has provided a true test of golf for more than a century with its 16-hole course. Open champions Sandy Herd and course architect James Braid were behind the design of what is regarded as one of the county’s finest courses, one which is highly praised by the internationally renowned golfing star Lee Westwood.

At 6,334 yards off the white tees the course is not particularly long, though with a par of 70, it is certainly no push-over. The course has played host to some top professionals and aspiring amateurs, providing a fair and enjoyable test to golfers of all abilities. As well as this, Rotherham is the only club in England to boast a US Masters Tournament winner as a member - Danny Willett.

considered one of the finest parkland courses in the region through various projects to elevate the playing experience and establish a new standard of golfing excellence.

One major focus has been on the bunker refurbishment project, which began in 2019 following member feedback. This extensive project, led by renowned golf course architect Jonathan Gaunt, aimed to refurbish all the bunkers on the course, improve their layouts, sand quality, drainage, and consistency. The refurbishment included the use of state-of-theart rubber crumb and bunker liner technology, and the new bunkers were filled with China clay sand known for its moisture retention and distinctive grey, mottled appearance.

In addition to the bunker upgrades, the club has made other notable improvements to its infrastructure. The path around the 13th tee and halfway house has been replaced with the Blinder Eco Path system, developed from recycled rubber crumb.

This environmentally friendly, hardwearing material is easy on the legs and enhances

the visual appeal of the course. This follows a similar upgrade to the path to the first tee and practice nets last year.

GANTON GOLF CLUB

landscapes and an all-

Yorkshires long-acknowledged premier course is said to be the finest inland layout in the country. A catalogue of impressive Top100 World rankings, place Ganton amongst the ‘Who’s Who’ of the world’s top golfing locations.

Golf was first played in Ganton in the summer of 1891. The course was originally laid out by St Andrews’ Tom Chisolm, and has since been touched by most leading golf course architects over the years, including Braid, Colt, Fowler, Taylor and MacKenzie. Not resting on their laurels, the Club has recently embarked on a major restoration project

under the direction of leading golf course architect Martin Ebert. Clearance of gorse has revealed natural sand lines that had been lost over time – the dramatic scale of these sand areas provides great challenge and pleasing natural aesthetics.

Ganton is the only inland UK Club to host the Ryder, Curtis & Walker Cups, and the Amateur Championship among many other significant events. In 2021 the Club hosted the English Strokeplay Championship (Brabazon Trophy) and the R&A Senior Amateur Championship. In 2023 the R&A return to stage the Boys and Girls Championships.

Ganton remains an enigma, where golfers experience tradition, quality, and a great test of their ability; The par 71 course measures over 7000yrd from the Championship tees, but most will prefer to play from the range of shorter teeing options available.

The superbly appointed clubhouse is a shrine to golfing years gone by. The Thirsk, Vardon and Rudgard rooms all boasts views across the course and provide access to a wonderful outdoor terrace – perfect for al fresco eating and drinking.

Ganton Golf Club welcomes society groups throughout the year with excellent dining packages coupled with fantastic golf to create the ideal golf day.

Ganton is proud to have been closely linked to the history of British golf and visitors enjoy reviewing old photographs, original paintings and tournament memorabilia which detail ‘the Ganton story’.

Vardon House provides on-site dormy accommodation for up to 8 golfers, and many visitors to Ganton take the opportunity to book a ‘stay and play’ package so they can fully immerse themselves in the Club traditions and history.

Ganton is certainly a venue that should be on every discerning golfer’s bucket list.

Malone Golf Club

Nestled in the tranquil countryside just a few miles from Belfast, Malone Golf Club is widely considered as one of the best parkland courses in Ireland, with 27 holes and situated around a magnificent 20 acre lake. Whether you're seeking a peaceful golf break or organising a society golf outing, Malone Golf Club provides the perfect setting for a memorable day on the greens.

Founded in 1895, Malone Golf Club has a long and storied history. The club moved to its current location at Ballydrain in 1962, where it has thrived ever since. The centerpiece of the club is Ballydrain House, a beautiful Georgian mansion that serves as the clubhouse. This historic building, surrounded by mature woodlands and the shimmering waters of Ballydrain Lake, offers a glimpse into the club’s rich heritage while providing modern amenities for today’s golfers from across the region and beyond.

The Club boasts a stunning 27-hole championship and is divided into three distinct 9-hole loops: the Drumbridge, Ballydrain, and Edenderry courses. This configuration allows for a variety of playing options, ensuring that no two rounds at Malone are ever the same. The courses are set within 330 acres of mature parkland, with tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and challenging water hazards.

On Drumbridge the character changes with the seasons, as the bounce of the ball is affected by the moisture in the ground. Make sure to watch out for the seventh – the hardest hole on the course.

On Ballydrain’s 10th - 18th holes, the back nine are dominated by the beautiful lake and surrounding vegetation. The par threes are a challenge and the 13th hole is the second hardest hole on the course. But watch out for the 18th – many cards have been spoilt at this demanding last.

Finally, the Edenderry loop, named after the village across the river, is a 9 hole round testing both skill and energy as it is the most undulating of the three nines. A couple of sharp doglegs and water and the river in play make this nine a great choice.

All three loops combine to make the renowned championship course and are maintained to the highest standards, with the greens and fairways kept in pristine condition year-round. The natural beauty of the parkland, with its mature trees, rolling terrain, and serene lakes, enhances the golfing experience, making a round at Malone Golf Club as visually stunning as it is technically challenging.

Their club shop offers a fine collection of the latest styles and trends in Men’s, Women’s and Children’s golf apparel as well as an array of Malone crested clothing and accessories.
