Stoke Rochford PR

This year Stoke Rochford introduced a new competition with teams of 3, made up from 1 Lady player, 1 Junior and 1 Senior. A stableford competition with the best 2 from 3 to count on each hole. The competition was held at half term to allow the Juniors to field as many players as possible, and was well supported. Previously the Ladies and Seniors held an annual match, but it was felt this had lost some of its attraction, and we wished to liven up by including younger blood! The matches were all close with the winners being Helen Jackson, Jack Muxlow and Eddie Plant, scoring 82 points.

The winners were presented with the Goldsbrough Bowl, previously won in the Ladies versus Seniors match.

Lady Captain Pauline Haggerty said "The success of the new format would ensure that Juniors are integrated into all club activities as soon as possible and hopefully they can go on to play for the Ladies or Seniors in years to come!

Kind hearted golfers raise thousands for Riding for the Disabled Association

A national charity which utilises the unique bond between people and horses to enrich the lives of those living with a disability has received a boost, thanks to a Berkshire golf club.

Royal Ascot Golf Club presented a cheque for £14,699.53 to Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) at its Windsor and Ascot Driving Group after nominating it as the club’s Captains’ Charity for 2024.

Founded in 1969, RDA supports more than 25,000 children and adults each year through riding, carriage driving and non-riding experiences and operates 400 centres nationally with the help of 13,000 volunteers, 1,500 qualified coaches and 2,700 horses.

Its team works with people of all ages and abilities with the goal of making positive change through the therapeutic power of horses. Members clubbed together at multiple social events through the year to reach the final sum which will be committed to RDA centres in Berkshire.

Outgoing Ladies Captain and RDA supporter Sharon Edwards said the money will make a huge difference to the charity’s Windsor and Ascot Driving Group and Warfield Riding for the Disabled Group.

“We’re so pleased to present such a significant sum to a charity which makes a genuine difference to so many people’s lives only a stone’s throw from our course,” said Sharon.

“I’ve seen first-hand the positive change RDA can make to people of all ages by connecting those who live with a disability to horses, regardless if they have previous experiences with animals or not.

“It’s so fulfilling to see people reach their true potential and find that purpose in life with a bit of support and friendly guidance.

“A huge thank you to everyone at the club who has supported our Captains’ Charity this year. We’re privileged to have such a closely-knit and friendly membership base at the club which no doubt has contributed to reaching our final total.”

In addition to the therapeutic and physical health benefits, RDA’s team works closely with the NHS with most participants referred to its services by medical professionals.

The charity’s recent impact report found more than three-quarters of participants (77 per cent) were more confident as a result of spending time with horses while 82 per cent said their ability to build relationships had improved.

Sharon and Men’s Captain Mike Ryall have made way for the club’s latest captains since the presentation, with Rob Boyle and Barbara Martin taking on the roles.

Both have chosen mental health charity Samaritans at this year’s Captains’ Charity, with members already raising more than £1,500 in support of its work.

Founded in 1887, Royal Ascot Golf Club was granted Royal status by Queen Victoria and is set in 150 acres of the splendid woodland of Windsor Great Park, off Winkfield Road and adjacent to the world-famous racecourse.

Further information about the club is available online via its website www.royalascotgolfclub.co.uk.

Hole in One resolution set by Oxford’s oldest golfer!

One of the UK’s oldest golfers has set himself a New Year’s resolution just days before celebrating his 91st birthday – to hit a hole in one.

Michael Quirke has been a member at Oxford Golf Club in Cowley for over three decades and still plays twice weekly at the Hill Top Road course to remain fit and social in retirement.

The former businessman emigrated to the UK from Kilkenny in 1953 and a year later found himself in Oxford after arriving on shores he now calls home with just £2 to his name.

After working as a steel erector to pay his bills, Michael founded his own business and by the 1980s employed more than 150 workers who covered jobs spanning the length and breadth of Britain.

It was only in retirement the father-of-two first picked up a golf club and he’s been hooked since by representing Oxford Golf Club as Captain in 2003 and President between 2012 and 2014.

He can still strike a ball 160 yards and hopes 2025 can be the year he breaks his hole in one duck.

“I’d love to hit a hole in one,” said Michael. “We have five par three holes at the club and three of them are in my range so each time I reach them I hope I’ll get lucky.

“When I worked, I could never understand why people would play golf. But now I look forward to getting out on the course.

“It keeps me fit and I’ve made friends for life. I’m fortunate my daughter lives on the same plot of land I purchased and renovated in Iffley in the 1980s, but it’s still a great excuse to get out of bed and meet new people.

“Thirty years on I still love playing and much of that is down to the camaraderie between members and guests at the club which has been very good to me.”

Michael was bedridden after testing positive for COVID-19 two years ago, but he has never allowed his age to hold him back.

So much so that he recently helped to refurbish the club’s shed which houses its golf buggies and has booked a golfing holiday to Ireland in June as part of his continued membership with the South Midlands Irish Golf Society.

“I go back to Ireland every year on the ferry,” said Michael. “During the pandemic I did lose a bit of interest in golf, but when things returned to normal you realise how good it is for you physically and socially.

“A lot has changed since I started playing, mostly the rules. I’ve played all over Europe and I can honestly say Oxford Golf Club is as good as any I’ve visited.

“A hole in one and reaching my hundredth birthday – those are my two targets now!”

Founded in 1873 Oxford Golf Club was the original club of Oxford University and to this day features an 18-hole course designed by legendary golf architect Harry Colt.

Molly has also joined the Hampshire Ladies Board as Governance Director demonstrating her ongoing commitment to the game.

Special Award – Trailblazers - Fiona Womack and Sharon Eales

Fiona and Sharon have developed a scientific model that represents a paradigm shift in golf course design. For so many women (and men) the shortest tees are still too long and often not in a great position. This means that many women do not enjoy the same experience on the course as men. Their model creates a scaled version of the courses that the architect wanted every golfer to play, incorporating all of the same experiences, using the same clubs for the same shots, tackling the same hazards, just with fewer yards involved. This new approach has already attracted interest from leading golf course architects including Tom Mackenzie, the R&A’s Handicap Committee, the WHS Operations Committee and various governing bodies.

Special Award – Inspirational AchievementAdele McLean, Managing Director TGI Golf

This year, nearly two decades after joining TGI Golf, Adele McLean accepted the role of Managing Director and looks to continue building on the success TGI Golf has enjoyed over the last 40 years. Her journey from the driving range to heading up the UK & Ireland’s leading golf retail services business is nothing short of

inspirational. Her appointment was celebrated far and wide by women and men across the industry who recognised the incredible impact she has had on the business and demonstrates to other women what can be achieved when there are no glass ceilings.

Angus is home to the fifth oldest golf course in the world, Montrose Golf Links, and, just twelve miles north of Dundee, lies the championship golf course at Carnoustie which first hosted the Open in 1921.

Boasting a fantastic blend of links and heathland golf courses, Angus’ narrow fairways, long carries and undulating greens are a common characteristic of the landscape. The sweeping terrain and spectacular views make the region a highly recommended destination for a golf break.

Experience the Cradle of Scotland

Designed by golf course architect, Bob Simpson, the course at Edzell was originally laid out in 1895 and amended some thirty years later in line with recommendations from the legendary James Braid.

More recently, it has been sympathetically upgraded by Martin Ebert of Mackenzie & Ebert, worldrenowned architects responsible for recent works at Turnberry and Royal Portrush.

Originally designed as a challenging heathland golf course, a major treeplanting programme which began in the 1960’s has brought a parkland feel

to this beautiful and tranquil setting. Today the 18-hole, par 71 golf course is complimented by the delightful 9-hole West Water Course, which was founded in 2001, and a superb driving range and short game practice facility. The Edzell clubhouse is the ideal place to relax with family, friends and colleagues, offering top quality service in pleasant surroundings.
