Welcome to the Autumn issue of Your Golfer Magazine. With the end of the year fast approaching, Your Golfer has been busy not only promoting clubs/ courses from across the UK, we have also been working closely with clubs that have used part of the season to help bring the awareness of good causes and charities, whilst also raising much needed funds. For instance, if you turn to pages Four and Five you will find the The Musselburgh Golf Club in East Lothian have become a “Mentally Healthy Club” this has been achieved by teaming up with organisations such as Breathing Space and The Samaritans in order to combine playing the sport of golf with the improvement of mental health. Blackmoor Golf Club (see pages Six and Seven) have also been busy raising over £19,000 for both the Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Association and The Uk Sepsis Trust. The above may only be two examples, however both are proof of how much golf clubs and their members do for today’s society. Indeed, with clubs using their state-of-the-art facilities in order to help promote local charities it is justifiable to say that golf clubs are a focal point for the regional areas they represent, with much of this well needed fundraising missing during lockdown. We hope that you enjoy reading the full stories published for these two organisations on their respective pages, as well as news on new products to help improve your game and of course the usual profiles of some of the best society venues across the UK. Making strides in supporting mental health at Musselburgh Musselburgh Golf Club has taken its first steps to becoming a mentally healthy golf club. The Lothian golf club recently hosted its Wellbeing tournament on the Monktonhall course through which it teamed up with two mental health organisations - NHS 24’s Breathing Space and Samaritans as well as Network Railpromoting conversations to support better mental health locally. An excellent way to combine sport and improving mental wellbeing, the competition which coincided with World Suicide Day was played in three balls and raised awareness for the support that is provided by mental health organisations. Stuart Wright, Captain of Musselburgh Golf Club explained, “Just as we have physical health, we all have mental health too.” “As a club, we recognise that golf can connect people and have tremendous benefits to our wellbeing” he continued. Whilst it has been a challenging time for all during the events of the last two years, the aim of Musselburgh GC is to make sure all club members and the wider community feel supported.

Over the coming months, the club will host ‘Learn to Listen’ workshops held by Samaritans’ Edinburgh encouraging club staff and members to listen to others. These workshops will be complemented by wellbeing talks from Breathing Space removing stigma associated with mental illhealth. Located just a few minutes south of Edinburgh, in the Lothians region, the interesting old market town of Musselburgh lies six miles east of Edinburgh where the River Esk meets the sea. The town is well known for golf, its famous racecourse as well as many great architectural displays. Musselburgh really does offer something for everyone. Musselburgh Golf Club was founded in 1938 and, over the years, the course has hosted many amateur events and, on two occasions, the Scottish Professional Championship. In 2010 and 2013, Musselburgh was selected as a Local Final Qualifying venue for The Open at Muirfield. Designed by legendary golf course architect, James Braid, the Par 71, 6,725 yard Musselburgh golf course represents a challenge for even the most accomplished of golfer.

Charity Initiatives Raise Over £19,000 The 2021 Club Captain’s charity, the UK Sepsis Trust, was awarded the sum of £8,847 presented to Trust Volunteer Pete Gill by the Club Immediate Past Captain Dennis Pym and Andy Kendall from the Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Society accepted a cheque for £10,191 by the Ladies’ Immediate Past Captain Frances Hudson, bringing the total charitable donation to £19,038.

Supporting Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Society and the UK Sepsis Trust Wednesday 20th October: Blackmoor Golf Club is pleased to announce that the captains’ charities have raised more than nineteen thousand pounds for the UK Sepsis Trust and Hampshire Alzheimer & Dementia Society. The donations, which were raised by members of the golf club over the past 18months, were presented to representatives from both charities on Saturday 16th October during the annual Captain’s Drive-in, a ceremonial held to mark the outgoing of the current Captains and incoming of the new club officers.

Speaking at the presentation, Club Past Captain Dennis Pym said it had been a pleasure and privilege to hold the Club Captaincy at Blackmoor Golf Club and to be able to support the UK Sepsis Trust, an organisation which helps to prevent deaths from the life-threatening condition. In a letter from the UK Sepsis Trust, Chief Executive, Dr Ron Daniels thanked Blackmoor for the incredibly generous donation that would go directly towards raising public awareness, educating health professionals, and supporting those affected by Sepsis. Each year the Blackmoor Captain’s choose a charity to support at the beginning of their tenure and fundraising events and activities are held throughout the year to encourage contributions from club members. In 2020 coronavirus restrictions meant that many of the planned activities needed to be postponed, so the club decided to extend the captaincies for a further year, a decision which had a very positive effect on proceeds raised.

Commenting on the donations, Frances Hudson said: “Proceeds have been raised by holding plenty of fundraising events and activities which encourage donations from our members, these included charity coffee mornings, captain’s raffles, fun golf days, cake baking as well as individual donations from members. I’m extremely grateful to everyone for their support and generosity during my captaincy.” Speaking at the presentation Alzheimer’s Community Fundraiser, Andy Kendall said: “Like all charities, our income has taken a huge blow due to the pandemic, while demand for our vital dementia support services has sky-rocketed. Without the generosity of supporters like the members of Blackmoor Golf Club we simply cannot keep up. Their donation will make a big difference to lives of people affected by dementia and their families who have never needed us more.”

Blackmoor Golf Club, Captain’s Drive-in Saturday 16th October Following the AGM of Blackmoor Golf Club the previous evening, the Captain’s Drive-in ceremony welcomed the newly elected club officers. The 2022 Club Captain, Kevin Quinn drove off the first tee with a 216-yard drive, a distance correctly guessed by Elspeth Dixon in the Drive-in sweep, which raised money for Myeloma UK the newly appointed Club charity. Myeloma UK is the only UK charity focused on the discovery, development, and access to new effective treatments for Myeloma, a blood cancer arising from plasma cells. He was preceded by Nigel Barrow, the newly elected Seniors’ Captain, and Vi Ricketts, the Ladies’ Captain.

10-POINT GUIDE TO A GREENER FUTURE Working with the golf and leisure sector to help venues realise their sustainable goals, GreenClub has already made a huge impression in changing attitudes and approaches to the environment since launching last autumn. London Golf Club, host of the Cazoo Classic on the European Tour this summer, and Roganstown Hotel & Country Club in Ireland are just two of the venues to have benefitted from working with the specialist environmental consultants to further their combined aim of carbon neutrality. JACK DYER JOINS WHITE ROSE SPORTS MANAGEMENT Promising English golfer Jack Dyer has signed with White Rose Sports Management ahead of his professional debut at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship later this week. White Rose, an agency co-founded in 2015 by Liverpool midfielder James Milner whose approach is rooted in performance, attitude and application - will manage Dyer’s on and off course interests as he begins his pro career. 22-year-old Dyer hails from Leigh-on-Sea and attended Southend High School, who he led to a National Championship in 2012. Jack moved to the United States in 2016 to attend Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale before graduating to California State University Fullerton in 2018 to represent the ‘Titans’ at collegiate level. Representing Boyce Hill Golf Club, Essex, Dyer has enjoyed an excellent run of form in the last 18 months. In 2020, he posted course record scores at both the English Men’s Amateur Championship at Woodhall Spa and the Brabazon Trophy at Sherwood Forest. Earlier this year, Jack travelled to South Africa claiming victory in the South African Amateur Championship Stroke Play event to progress to the match play stages where he lost in a 36-hole final. In May, Dyer’s rich vein of form was rewarded with a call-up to the 2021 GB&I Walker Cup team, where he competed alongside fellow White Rose player, Ben Schmidt. Dyer then registered a 3rd place finish in The Amateur Championship, one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur golf events in the world, and his hot streak continued with a 5th place finish in the English Men’s Amateur Championship in July.

Commenting on his decision to join White Rose Sports Management, Dyer said: “I’ve loved every minute of my amateur career but I’ve reached a stage where I’m ready to take the next step and test myself against the best players in Europe and around the world. I’m really excited to be joining White Rose Sports Management. The pedigree and experience of James and Adam, plus the expertise that Dr Stephen McGregor and the wider team provide, fills me with huge confidence as I look to build a successful career in the sport. “The hard work starts here but I have the perfect team around me who have ‘been there and done it’ at the highest levels of professional sport and worked with the best players in the game. Paul Ennis Becomes Champion on Finals Day The Citizen Golf Society hosted its finals day at The Warwickshire Golf Club on Friday 10 September, with 20 golfers teeing off in search of a host of prizes. Paul Ennis, a Carpenter in our Maintenance Operations Team, emerged as the champion golfer for 2021 – scoring consistently during the year and finishing runner up on finals day to storm to the title and steal the crown from last year’s champion Anthony Harris. Les Burden from the event sponsor Jackson Lifts scored highest on the final day. Neil Crew (Head of ICT projects), Pete McGreevy ( Carpenter) and Steve Hayes ( Director of Communications) won the team par 3 contest which was held in the morning. Pete also took third place on finals day. We are beginning to suspect that our carpenters are having private tuition ? Ian Callaghan ( neighbourhood manager) won the closest to the pin competition held on the 4th hole of the course.

The society raises money on the day and donates the proceeds to charity or a chosen beneficiary. Andy Bayliss, a Neighbourhood Manager, who organises the Citizen Golf Society with Ian Callaghan and Craig Farquharson (Senior M and E Surveyor), said all funds raised would go to the family of a former colleague in our Income Team who passed away in May following a long battle with cancer after working for Citizen for nearly 25 years. She left a husband and young family who will clearly benefit. The total raised so far is £802.55 but this is likely to increase when some outstanding vouchers that were donated are raffled off.

Avoid slow play!

Controlling the impact of insects on the golf course Over the last five years or so, greenkeeping has become a science, rather than an art. The removal of pesticides used, not just on the golf course and significant advances in technology have revolutionised the way a course can be presented. However, this has not stopped the insects and grubs visiting courses in the warm, balmy summer months. So which bugs are leaving their mark on you when you are playing a round? Common offenders can be Leather Jackets - the larvae of the daddy longlegs fly; Chafer grubs – larvae of the chafer beetles; and Biblio flies. As well as these annoyances, common inhabitants of the golf course can include midges and mosquitos. How many times has a golfer reached the top of their back swing and a mosquito suddenly buzzes in their ear, ruining your concentration and sending their golf ball wayward - the perfect round no more! As most golfers know, mosquitoes are just another hazard to deal with when out on the golf course. They're as inevitable to many as a missed 3-foot putt! TESTING AND DEVELOPMENT WORK

Methods that are adopted by golf course managers, greenkeepers and other sports venues is still in some instances, simply poisoning the insects by direct contact insecticides. Whilst these chemical controls still exist today and are effective, there are also a number of biological solutions available. Dundee-based, APS Biocontrol Ltd (APS) develops biocontrol solutions for the management of midges and mosquitos on the golf course, investing time and testing a suite of products in the ‘insect solutions environment’. With over 30 years research and practical experience of the management of nuisance insects, APS have create a suite of insect pest control products limiting infestations and in some examples, eliminating nuisance insects such as mosquitos and biting and non-biting midges. APS Bio Control will work with golf clubs to tailor their services to meet their needs. The company will undertake assessments of the areas with the largest infestations and offer a timely resolution in line with USEPA and WHO guidelines. Common golf course techniques used are standard Mosquito traps, after-bite treatments, repellents and insecticides. APS have built expert testing facilities and processes; some of which are listed below: In arm-in-cage test to determine the time between application of a repellent and the first confirmed mosquito bite – the Complete Protection Time (CPT). Using a volunteer limb as the attractant.

In-Victro testing – to test the repellent effect of the product by using heat and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) as an attractant. After bite testing Olfactometers which can be used to assess insect behaviour in the presence of attractant and repellents – goal of determining the correct variant for use by the golf club. In terms of products that can be applied by the golfer, APS’ flagship insect repellent, Smidge is designed for the tough outdoors of Scotland but is equally as effective in the rain forest, on a tropical beach or indeed, out on the golf course!
