The Directors and Senior Management of Your Golfer Magazine are delighted to introduce the winner of the South West Scotland Golf Club of the Year for 2019 as Cowglen Golf Club in Glasgow. The Award not only reflects the golf club’s wonderful eighteen hole golf course and practice facilities but also the hospitality provided to visitors to the golf club all year round, many of whom return year after year.

Situated five miles from the centre of Glasgow, Cowglen Golf Club was founded in 1906 and was later re-designed by legendary golf course architect, James Braid. Today, the undulating parkland golf course with mature trees lining its fairways and excellent, truerunning greens provides an interesting and varied challenge to all. The par 70 Cowglen golf course measures 5,867 yards and boasts magnificent views over the city of Glasgow and beyond to the Scottish Highlands. Playable all year round thanks to the excellent work of the club’s green keeping staff, the picturesque golf course is presented to the highest standards all year round.
Recognised as a Sottish Golf Development Centre in 2013, Cowglen Golf Club is also home to some great practice facilities which are unrivalled in the local area and ideal to hone one’s skills before taking on the main course.
Hospitality is second to none at Cowglen Visitors can be assured of a warm, friendly welcome at Cowglen Golf Club making for a memorable day’s golf with many societies and guests returning to take on the fairways again. The Cowglen clubhouse features a spacious and relaxing lounge and dining area which is open to members, visitors and their families seven days a week. The clubhouse also features a superblyappointed, patio area to the front of the clubhouse which offers views out across the golf course inclusive of the 18th green and 1st tee.
The golf club’s dedicated and professional catering team are highly regarded and offer delicious snacks, light bites and tasty main dishes made using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Cowglen also cater for large functions throughout the year with a range of menu options available.
Boasting spectacular views over the River Clyde, the great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the courses close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers away from the golf course.

Simon Payne| Fellow Professional
Simon Payne was appointed Head Professional at Cowglen on the 1st May 2000 having served as an assistant at the club since 1989. As an assistant Simon received one of the coveted PGA trainees of the Year awards on his qualification to full PGA membership. He was appointed as the Glasgow Golf Union Junior County Coach in 1999 – Jan 2016. In 2009-2011 he was selected as one of only 4 Scottish Golf Union “Performance Club” coaches and in 2013 as a Scottish Golf Development Center Coach. In 2010 Simon’s status as a PGA member was elevated to Advanced PGA Professional in recognition of his experience and continued Professional development. This status was increased again to Fellow in May 2017. This is based on a strong desire to improve own understanding and knowledge, through attendance at courses, seminars, and by taking qualifications related to golf, as well as having shown commitment and a willingness to develop self. Writing articles and/or delivered seminars and being recognised by his peers as having a high level of skill and knowledge. Simon has built a strong reputation as a teacher and golf equipment specialist; he is highly regarded for his detailed knowledge of the golf swing and ability to clearly communicate good technique to all golfers, whether they be low handicappers or beginners. In 2017 he achieved ASQ ( Associated Sports Qualification) Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Golf.
He features regularly in Today’s Golfer the UK’s #1 Magazine as one of its Top 50 Coaches.
The 18th at The Cowglen
The Cowglen Golf Club Visitors can be sure of an enjoyable and memorable experience at Cowglen Golf Club. Fellow PGA Professional, Simon Payne is on hand to ensure the smooth running of the golf day with a variety of excellent packages and a number of excellent opportunities to give your golf day a truly unique twist: • A ‘Beat the Pro’ competition can also be arranged on specific holes. The professional will greet your groups at the selected par three hole and, for those who hit their shot closer than the pro, they receive a prize in the clubhouse following the completion of the round. Other additional fun activities such as chipping and putting contests and the prizes to go with these can be organised with the professional team prior to the event. • The club’s professional can play alongside your groups, spending some time with each three or fourball offering expert on course advice and tuition. The Pro plays a pre-determined number of holes with each group before moving on. • Two hour golf clinic with hints, tips and specific tuition for those individuals who wish to get involved. Simon can also provide short game tuition for large groups. Whilst waiting for their tee time, professional will put players through their paces on the putting green. • As part of their society and corporate day deal, the professional staff can even record every one tee sheet on the first hole for their analysis, comments and in some cases comedy after the round.
