Perthshire Golf Club of the Year 2019
F
ollowing a meeting of local gentlemen the decision was proposed to find the land at Crieff for a golf course in 1890. Old Tom Morris, the professional from St Andrews was asked to come and inspect various sites suitable for a golf course and he architected the original 9 hole layout in 1891.
In 1924, the legendary golf course architect, James Braid inspected the golf course with the view of making alterations and improvement to the existing layout. Braid made some excellent suggestions which green keeper Bob Briggs and his team carried out. By 1929, the club has spent nearly £3000 making the improvements that James Braid suggested and it was decided that the course should host its first amateur golf tournament. Today, the gently sloping parkland golf course, built on the grounds of Ferntower House offers an enjoyable experience for all levels of golfer. The club extends a friendly reception to visitors which has seen Crieff Golf Club voted as one of the top UK golf courses by readers of GolfWorld magazine.
The superb Ferntower golf course is not just for the big hitters. Although it requires length and accuracy from the tees, it is an ideal society golf course; easy-walking with wide open fairways and merciful rough. Crieff also offers the superbly appointed, Dornock course which plays shorter than the championship, Ferntower course. However, Dornock is an excellent test of golf course management and club selection – ideal for testing all aspects of one’s golf game. Crieff’s spectacular two-level clubhouse building stands majestically behind the club’s practice putting green. Catering is provided by Gourlay’s, a husband and wife catering team with vast experience within the hospitality sector. Gourlay’s are a well-established name, providing event and function catering in and around Perthshire and Central Scotland.
The clubhouse restaurant boasts a choice of menus offering everything from a full Scottish breakfast to light bite lunches and delicious evening meals.

The Award Winning Crieff Golf Club A product of the golfing boom, which opened half of the country's present courses between 1880 and 1909, Crieff Golf Club was established in 1891 after St. Andrews' Golf Professional, Old Tom Morris carved a nine-hole course out from what was East Ledbowie Park. The club's existing courses, Ferntower and Dornock, stretch over the restorative grounds of the Hydro, the grand Victorian Spa, which opened in 1856. Since the mid 19th Century, visitors seeking refuge from the encroaching cityscapes of Edinburgh and Glasgow have assembled on Crieff's rugged Highland line; once an ancient frontier settlement and market town, Crieff maintains its reputation as a place of gathering.
