Hertfordshire Golf Club of the Year 2019

A PREMIER PARKLAND COURSE SINCE 1899 On receiving the Your Golfer award for a second year running, the golf club’s Secretary Tim Knight explained: “

.” Dating back to 1899, Porters Park was one of the first golf course developed on the north side of London. Founded in the grounds of the local ‘Porters’ mansion, the classic parkland golf course’s early design was heavily influenced by John Henry ‘JH’ Taylor - one of the great golf course architects, and Charles Kenneth Cotton who went on to become one of the UK’s most distinguished post-war golf course architects. The par 70 course is hugely picturesque with magnificent views of the Hertfordshire countryside from all corners of the golf course. Porters Park’s tree-lined fairways use the natural contours of the land to create a magical golfing experience and a fair challenge for all levels. Highly regarded in Hertfordshire, Porters Park has been selected to host Open Championship Qualifying events on six separate occasions. Measuring 6,529 yards from the championship tees, the inspiring and now, double award-winning Porters Park golf course is playable all year round. Built on a base of loam clay, sand and gravel, the golf course drains really well with temporary greens never used and the course, rarely closed. Practice makes perfect at Porters Park, the club’s practice facilities are second to none and include a practice putting green synonymous with the putting surfaces out on the championship golf course; practice nets and a short-game and bunker practice area.

The club also offers long game facilities through large driving and long-game practice areas which lie between the 9th and 11th hole and are used extensively by the club’s team of PGA Professionals for lessons and tuition.

Why not enjoy a drink or bite to eat in the Porters Park clubhouse pre or post round – the ideal place to relax and unwind with friends and family, whilst offering some spectacular views across the golf course from the lounge, restaurant and bar areas.

Relax and unwind in comfortable surroundings

The Hertfordshire golf club’s catering team provides imaginative cuisine, as well as traditional favourites, all of which can be served in the club’s spacious dining room, which opens on to a terrace – perfect for al fresco dining during the summer months.

The Porters Park clubhouse building was damaged by fire in 1954 with much of the original structure having to be rebuilt. As a result of this catastrophe, a large extension was completed in 1990 enhancing the golf club’s facilities for members and guests alike. Today, the clubhouse combines tradition and modern ambience. During refurbishments and upgrades, the club was careful to retain the clubhouse’s character that has been enjoyed by so many through the years.

Porters Park Golf Club is also renowned in Hertfordshire as a premier venue for conferences and corporate golf, as well as a wonderful wedding venue which has been enjoyed by many brides who have been catered for by experienced staff with an eye for detail. The renovated clubhouse building is also home to the superb Porters Park Pro Shop which is well-stocked with the latest equipment, shoes

and golfing attire from some of the game’s leading manufacturers. Porters Park Golf Club is also an official FootJoy fitting centre – one of only 100 in the country.

Why not see for yourself? A society day at Porters Park makes for a truly memorable experience. From arrival to prizegiving, the award-winning golf provides guests with magnificent hospitality and cannot do enough for the group. With a golf course that features prominently in the UK’s Top 100 Golf Course guide, societies and corporate groups have been welcomed to Porters Park Golf Club for over 100 years. The club offers a range of packages covering 18, 27 and 36 holes which can be tailored to the specific requirements and budgets of the visiting party.
