2022
Welcome
Golfer Autumn
Welcome to the Autumn 2022 edition of Your Golfer Magazine.
Well!! What a summer it has been for golfers nationwide. Not for many years have we had a summer that guaranteed excellent conditions for society golfers. With the exception of a few, some of the courses that you have played over recent months have been in some of the best condition they have been for some time.
Moving on to Autumn there are still some excellent courses and society offers to take advantage of. Be it a round locally, or perhaps further afield with a golf break. The Gold Coast in Scotland is excellent at this time of year!
Within this issue we have endeavoured to once again bring you news, reviews and profiles of some of the best courses available to you this time of year. We hope you enjoy reading this issue and look out for our Society guides for 2023 that will be out in December.

Want to improve your swing? Start with an overhead squat
Believe it or not, hitting a golf ball and performing an overhead squat require very similar physical capabilities. Therefore, as Urban Body’s Specialist Golf Therapist Tom Gallagher explains, how you position your body during a squat can reveal a lot about which muscle groups you need to work on to help improve your swing:
“How accurately a golfer can perform an overhead squat is a baseline test to assess mobility at the ankles, knees, hips, thoracic spine and shoulders, as well as a strong posterior chain to hold the position. Limitations in any of these areas can prevent a golfer from performing an effective swing.
We utilise the overhead squat test to help determine the cause of faults leading to injuries and performance issues including hitting distance, speed, path, power, inconsistencies and flight patterns. If you are unable to perform the overhead deep squat there is a 99% chance you will have a loss of posture during your golf swing, with early extension (moving toward the ball on the downswing) and a flat shoulder plane the most common issues.
The majority of the population, including some of the best athletes in the world, fail to perform this exercise correctly. To be considered a complete full deep squat, the following must be seen:
·
·
Upper torso parallel with the tibia
Femur below horizontal
Dowel/club/knees aligned over feet
· Feet pointing forward, not flared out
Here are the most common reasons why most people are unable to perform an accurate overhead squat, and therefore a less effective golf swing:
Upper body mobility restrictions
A lack of range in your shoulders and thoracic spine will create difficulties in separating the upper body with the lower half, causing a loss of posture during the backswing. This can often result in what swing coaches call a “reverse spine angle,” making consistent ball striking and generating force very challenging.
Ankle mobility restrictions
The most common reason for losing posture is caused by the heels rising off the ground when lowering into a squat (and also the golf swing set up stance), making it difficult to balance. Most of the time this results in what swing coaches will refer to as “early extension”, classified as the thrusting of the lower body towards the ball before impact. If the lower body moves towards the ball, the club and arms get stuck. This causes the golfer’s arms and wrist to compensate, creating a hook to the left.
Core instability/pelvic imbalances
Wherever there is a limited range of hip movement and stability or insufficient core strength, a lack of depth (or shifting) is commonly seen when overhead squatting is attempted and therefore a smooth, full backswing is unlikely. It is common for golfers to develop muscle imbalances, due to the swing being a one-side rotational movement that is performed repetitively. Early extension is frequently seen, and these compensational patterns can cause inconsistencies when swinging the club.
If you have limitations in your swing, or faulty habits like early extension, then request a TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) body assessment to see what restrictions you may have. Rectifying any weaknesses with recommended exercises will ultimately enable you to reach your potential on the golf course.”
TO IMPROVE EACH AREA
Hip - 90/90 or long windshield wipers
Adopt a sitting position with your back straight, legs out wide and knees bent.
Drop both knees to one side, under control, until you are in a 90/90 position.
Return to the start position and repeat on the other side.
Reps: 8
Sets: 2
This aims to improve your hip mobility by taking you through internal and external rotation of the hips, unlocking them to help you become pain free and improve your depth during the squat movement.
Ankle - half kneeling dorsiflexion stretch
Start in a kneeling position, placing your symptomatic leg out in front of you.
Place the stick in front of this foot and use it for balance.
Lean forward, allowing the knee to travel over the toes.
Make sure to keep your heel on the ground and hold for 15 seconds.
Reps: 5 Sets: 2
This exercise aims to stretch the muscles in the calf. Tightness in these muscles can limit our dorsiflexion during squatting, limiting the fluidity of the movement.
Tx - thread the needle
Start in a four point stance on your hands and knees.
Take one hand off the floor and reach in and through between your other hand and leg on that side. Allow your shoulder and head to follow, moving towards the floor as your hand reaches through. Allow your back to twist. You should feel a stretch down your side, your shoulder blade and neck. Hold for two seconds and then relax and repeat.
Reps: 8
Sets: 2
Designed to improve the mobility of your mid back, this combines a stretch of the thoracic muscles with movement at both the joint above and below the thoracic spine. Bonus exercise for shoulder mobility - reach, roll and lift
Start in a kneeling position with both hands on the floor.
Bring your buttock towards your feet and chest towards the ground, placing both forearms on the ground, then reach forward with the symptomatic arm.
Now roll your arm so your palm is facing up to the sky, then lift your arm away from the floor in a controlled manner. Return to the start position and repeat.
Reps: 6
Sets: 3
This exercise aims to improve the mobility of the shoulder during the external rotation movement, allowing you to reduce the load in the thoracic spine during the overhead squat.
Certified by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), Urban Body’s golf screening programme examines how movement restrictions are affecting your golf swing, focusing on mobility, stability, strength and flexibility in relation to striking a golf ball. The physiotherapists create bespoke recommendations to improve any weaknesses, which will ultimately reduce the risk of injuries and potentially increase how far you’re hitting the ball.
Urban Body’s physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic is based at the West Warwickshire Sports Club in Olton, and the team has more than doubled since the beginning of the pandemic. Urban Body offers free assessments to new patients. For more information please visit www.urbanbody.co.uk

The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has issued the results of a major industry survey, with some of the findings representing a stark warning to the golfing industry.
More than 1,300 members of BIGGA, representing golf clubs across the United Kingdom, responded to the survey, which asked them to provide details of working conditions at their facilities, in addition to commenting on their job satisfaction.
With talk of difficulties regarding the recruitment and retention of staff common, BIGGA undertook the survey to gain solid evidence of the challenges at UK golf clubs, and the results have raised a number of concerns.
Although 56% of respondents said they were happy working within the greenkeeping profession, 35% admitted they were currently looking for opportunities outside the industry.
With regard to issues of recruitment, 53% are running with teams at less than full strength, while 83.5% said they struggle to recruit new staff.
The boom in golf that followed the coronavirus lockdowns in the past two years has translated to a general increase in staffing numbers, with golf clubs having on average one extra full time greenkeeper compared to the previous poll in 2019.
However, investment in staff welfare facilities hasn’t materialised, with, for example, only one in five facilities offering single sex changing facilities and toilets for female team members. Despite increased reliance on technology, nearly half of clubs don’t provide internet connectivity within the greenkeeping facility. Further details and a results breakdown is available on the BIGGA website at: https://www. bigga.org.uk/news-listing/greenkeepers-biggaworkforce-survey.html
BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “I’m pleased to be able to present robust data to the wider golfing industry that lays bare some fairly frightening statistics on the challenges that exist within our profession.
“We know anecdotally that there are major challenges regarding the recruitment and retention of staff and also that pay, conditions and welfare are major contributors, but to see in black and white that nearly 35% of greenkeepers are looking for work outside the industry is truly a concern.
“Equally, finding out that only one in five facilities are equipped for female staff members shows that the sport’s laudable ambitions to improve equality and diversity are not translating into our side of the game.
“But the key question is what does the game of golf does with this information? It is widely known that there is currently a general challenge in recruiting and retaining staff across society. In order to continue functioning, many sectors have responded with significant pay increases and improvement in working conditions. Golf requires an integrated approach by the entire sport to overcome the challenges laid out by this survey. This approach will need to clearly lay out the challenges, create targets and devise plans to achieve our ambitions.”

Jack and Phil Used SkyCaddie GPS For Tour wins
HADDENHAM, UK - - Two players at different stages in their professional golf careers won tournaments last weekend while relying on SkyCaddie GPS for yardage information.
Phillip Price, conqueror of Phil Mickelson in the 1983 Ryder Cup, and 25 year-old Jack Davidson, soon to make his first attempt at Q-School on the DP World Tour this October, both used SkyCaddie’s ground-mapped GPS data to lift a trophy.
Six-time Tour winner Price won his first Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship at Nailcote Hall in a playoff against Sunningdale Heath’s Tom Reid, ahead of a star-studded field including eight exRyder Cup players and competitors from the European Tour, Legends Tour, LET and LPGA Tour.
“On Par Threes the SkyCaddie gives me info which laser can’t provide about carries, the depth of the green, and yardages to landing zones” said Price, who finished #6 on the Legends Tour Order Of Merit in 2021. “It’s invaluable, I use it on most holes and take it everywhere with me.”
Jack Davidson won The Lancer Scott Championship at Machynys Peninsula on the PGA EuroPro Tour, finishing three shots clear of the field after opening with a pair of blistering 64s on his way to his first EuroPro trophy.
“SkyCaddie puts the full picture of the hole into your mind” he said. “I absolutely trust the information it gives me.
“They put the EuroPro Tour pins into the SkyCaddie, and it gives you the distance to the flag from anywhere on the hole – so when I’m out of position and laying up the SkyCaddie makes it very easy to get the right number.”
Playing with a back injury, Davidson – who, like Phillip Price, hails from South Wales – relied on his caddie Lewis Brown to plot their way around the Jack Nicklaus-designed Machynys links using SkyCaddie’s ground-verified GPS information.
“Lewis is good with the SkyCaddie, we use it as much as we can – mainly off the tee, when you often can’t see landing spots or runouts to bunkers” he said.
SkyCaddie’s on-foot mapping process, exclusive to the company, continues to ensure that golfers with SkyCaddie GPS have the sport’s most comprehensive distance information. Visit www. skycaddie.co.uk for details of all SkyCaddie products and membership plans.
FOXHILLS’ PREPARATIONS IN FULL SWING AS COUNTDOWN TO PGA CUP BEGINS
Preparations are underway at Foxhills Club & Resort as the venue gears up to host the 30th PGA Cup this September, an event which is seen as the pinnacle for any PGA Professional.
The popular Surrey resort will once again welcome club professionals representing the PGAs of Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I) and America as they go head-tohead in a Ryder Cup format to win The Llandudno International Trophy.
Taking place from September 16-18, the GB&I team will be looking to regain the title they lost in dramatic fashion to the Americans after the hosts staged a remarkable final-day comeback at Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas, in 2019.
The PGA Cup returns to Foxhills and its revered Longcross course for a second time following the success of the 2017 tournament, when Albert Mackenzie led his GB&I team to an emphatic 16-10 victory. Since last hosting the event, the Surrey resort has undergone a £25million redevelopment programme, and joins The K Club in Ireland as the only other venue on home shores to have hosted the prestigious event on more than one occasion.
Ahead of the contest, more than 160 Foxhills members have already put their names forward to volunteer at the event to help staff members and PGA Cup officials with the running of the competition.
In a bid to get their own preparations underway, the GB&I team visited Foxhills from July 17-18 to familiarise themselves with the resort. Captain DJ Russell and his team enjoyed a relaxing two-day, teambonding retreat to the Surrey countryside to test themselves on the Longcross course, which consistently features in UK top 100 rankings and requires precise play to navigate its tree-lined layout.
The GB&I visit could prove vital given the make-up of the team, featuring only three players with previous PGA Cup experience and seven debutants. Matthew Cort - who qualified after recently winning the PGA Professional Championship at Slaley Hall - remains from the 2019 team and will be reunited with David Higgins and Greig Hutcheonwho both missed out on selection in 2019 but were on the winning side at Foxhills five years ago.
Higgins was one of four golfers who qualified for the team through the PGA ranking system, along with Daniel WhitbySmith, Ashley Mansell and Simon Lilly. Meanwhile, Hutcheon, Simon Thornton and Adam Keogh earned their spots via the PGA Play-offs earlier this year, with Paul McKechnie and James Ruth selected as captain’s picks.
“Foxhills is a fantastic facility”, DJ Russell said. “It is probably 50 years since I first came to Foxhills when it was first establishing itself as an elite golf venue; I have been here a few times since and it just continues to get better and better.” “It is incredible when you see how they have developed the place over the last few years. Foxhills will be a great venue for the 2022 matches and I am sure we will have a great time there for the week."
In contrast to the GB&I team, half of the Americans have previous PGA Cup experience as they look to win away for the first time since 2009.
Chris Fitt, Foxhills’ director of golf and leisure, said: “It is an honour to be hosting this prestigious event for a second time. Preparations are well underway to deliver a successful event and ensure the teams and spectators enjoy a fantastic week of golf.
“Excitement is certainly building here, and it was great to host the Great Britain & Ireland side for the team-bonding weekend. We look forward to welcoming the US contingent.”
Foxhills has a long tradition of hosting elite level golf after staging several highprofile PGA and PGA EuroPro Tour events, including the European Tour’s Tournament Players’ Championship and its Qualifying School.

JORDAN THOMPSON TAKES TYHE REINS AT LANARK GOLF CLUB
After starting his career at Gleneagles, helping to oversee no less than four Jonnie Walker Championships during his time, he then went on to have a spell at Colorado Springs Country Club in the US.
Jordan then moved back to the UK which saw him work for six years at Wentworth, helping to successfully complete six BMW PGA Championships on the famous West Course.
His journey did not stop there! More recently he worked at Sunningdale and helped oversee the 2015 senior open! However, due to the vast amount of experience he has gained over the years, Jordan was offered the position of Head Greenkeeper at Lanark Golf Club. After taking over from the previous Head Greenkeeper (Jim Lyon) who graced the course for over 40 years Jordan said. "It is a real honour to be taking over such a breath-taking course that is steeped in history and is in fact the 25th oldest club in the world. Myself and the rest of the greenkeeping team intend to continue to take the course forward as being one of the very best courses in the region"
Welcome Return Home to Millport GC for David
Life has gone full circle for David Patrick, recently appointed as Head Greenkeeper at Millport Golf Club. The Club was founded in 1888 and is an 18 hole heathland course situated near the top of the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde with stunning views of the other islands in the Firth including Bute, Arran and the Little Cumbrae.
David started his apprenticeship at Millport after leaving school in 2005 at 15 years old and spent the next 10 years working at the Club on all aspects of greenkeeping. It could be quite challenging at times at Millport with only 3 staff and cold and damp winters to contend with.
In 2015 David moved on to work on a 36-hole championship course just outside Vienna, called Colony Club Gutenhof which is one of the leading clubs in the country. Following that he acquired a working holiday visa and moved over to Australia for a year working at The Lakes GC and Royal Sydney GC. This was a real eye opener for him working on 2 very high-quality courses in some very warm temperatures. David then moved over to New Zealand working 6 months at Jacks’ Point GC based in Queenstown, which he considered by far the nicest course he has worked on, other than Millport of course!
On returning to the UK in 2018 David started a new job on the famous West Course at Wentworth, in his time there he was promoted to Senior Greenkeeper and was part of the team for 3 BMW PGA Championships. He left Wentworth in October 2020 after wanting to try something different.
He always had a passion for farming after helping a local friend at harvest time throughout his years on the island, so decided to stay in the turf industry and went on to work at Tillers Turf. Tillers is one of the leading growers of turf in the UK. His role there involved mainly fertilizing, spraying, seeding and lots of mowing covering approximately 2500 acres.
Then when David learned that the Head Greenkeeper's position became vacant back at Millport Golf Club it was a great opportunity for him and his family to return home and on the 6th June 2022 he returned to where it all began.
David is all too familiar with the challenges facing the course and in addition a very wet start to the year followed by a dry and cold March left some of the greens in poor condition and in need of attention which David and the team have given top priority to. The local rabbit population on the island also create problems and love to burrow in the bunkers. There are no foxes, stoats or weasels on the island to help keep the numbers down. David also plans to use his time at Tillers to grow his own turf on land that the Club owns beside the course.
The Club is delighted to welcome David back home and his experience gained overseas is already paying dividends with improvements to the greens and tees already evident.

The partnership is another step in the evolution of the Legends Tour – the European over-50s circuit – following its rebranding from the Staysure Tour in 2020. Bringing together many of the world’s finest senior golfers, the Tour has become increasingly popular with the introduction of its Celebrity Series, Alliance Series and Legends Club initiatives – where amateurs play under full tournament conditions in an individual and team competition with their professional partners.
The Tour’s Alliance Series and Celebrity Series will provide Royal Albartross with the opportunity to align its high-quality line of products with some of the most recognised names from the world of sport, media and entertainment, while allowing the Legends Tour to join forces with a luxury brand to complement its own vision to deliver a premium product to its growing audience and the discerning golfer.
Whilst helping support the Alliance Series and Celebrity series, the synergy between the Legends Club and Royal Albartross will also work hand in hand in providing the most suited product; offering an exclusive membership and the experience to live the life of a professional golfer. This features its own Order of Merit offering the chance to be crowned champion at the end of the season in December 2022 in the Indian Ocean.
The partnership will see the luxury shoe brand providing footwear, belts, gloves and other bespoke products and accessories at Legends Tour events.
Phil Harrison, chief executive of the Legends Tour, said: “Royal Albartross is the perfect fit for the Legends Tour, offering the highest standards in quality and craftsmanship. We are delighted to have joined forces with them as we look to build on our own success throughout 2022 and beyond.”

SkyCaddie Users Dominate JCB Top 50
HADDENHAM, UK - - GPS specialist SkyCaddie reports that 70% of the top 50 finishers in this weekend’s JCB Championship on the Legends Tour carried a SkyCaddie for their yardages.
And eight golfers in the top ten finishing places, in one of the strongest fields of the season, were SkyCaddie users.
Most competitors used their own SkyCaddie SX500 or the recently-launched SX550 to access comprehensive hole-by-hole information which is only available to SkyCaddie GPS users.
The Legends Tour is the world’s most prestigious professional golf tour to allow the use of distance measuring devices, and the tournament organisers use SkyCaddie’s ground-mapped yardages to create pin sheets when setting each day’s pins.
After his Top Ten finish in the JCB, Ryder Cup star and three-time European Tour winner Phillip Price said: “The SkyCaddie is invaluable. I use it on most holes and take it everywhere with me. It provides the additional information which a laser can’t give.”
Three-time European Tour winner Joakim Haeggmann said: “I use SkyCaddie every day in every tournament, for tee shots, carries, layups, bunkers, greens and planning the hole ahead. It’s also essential if you’re out of position and need a new number to a layup or to a landing spot on the green. I’d miss it badly if I couldn’t use it!”
Andrew Sherborne, a multiple winner on the European Tour, said: “I use the SkyCaddie in every tournament without fail. A laser only gives you a single number, whereas a SkyCaddie gives you the shape of the hole, fairway, and green, and even the shape of every bunker. That’s a full perspective of the hole, even if you’ve never played it before.”
The Par 72 golf course at JCB Golf & Country Club was playing just less than 7,000 yards in the tournament. Already rated among the UK’s top 100 golf courses, the JCB features heavilyundulating fairways and greens which give SkyCaddie users huge advantages over golfers who use a combination of laser and yardage book.
England cricket legend Darren Gough, who competed in Thursday’s pre-tournament Legends Tour Celebrity Series event, said: “I‘ve been using the SkyCaddie for a year now. Once you’ve had one, you’re almost lost without it!
SkyCaddie’s James Holmes said: “When so many of the sport’s best players are now using SkyCaddie’s exclusive GPS maps, and you aren’t, ask yourself – what do they know that I don’t?
“Nobody is more serious about yardages than a tour golfer – and the majority of Legends Tour players now use a SkyCaddie.”
He concluded: “The JCB Championship attracted an amazing field of golfers. We are overjoyed that so many of them – including four Major-winners – trusted SkyCaddie for their yardages in the tournament.” Visit www.skycaddie.co.uk for details of all SkyCaddie products and membership plans.
“Having a SkyCaddie is huge for players who are trying to get better.”
So far Citizen have only played two rounds of golf prior to their annual finals later this month. This year it is being held at West Midlands Golf course at Barston, Solihull and the course features the longest hole in Great Britain called ‘The Devil’. They have reserved 32 spaces for the day and hopefully the weather will be kind and they have a good day out playing golf and raising lots of money for charity. More on this in a later issue.
The first round played earlier this year was at Stonebridge Golf Course where 10 Citizen Golfers attended, the winner on the day was Pete McGreevey a trade engineer carpenter who scored an impressive 38 stableford points.
The second round was at Hearsall Golf Course where Nigel Mukarati a Lettings Team Leader scored an even more impressive 40 stableford points on his way to victory.
It was the weather this year that interfered with their schedule but not for the normal rain, wind or snow, no this time they had to suspend a game as it was too hot to play !

First-hand experience
Members of the Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to enjoy a round on the Par 3 Cromwell course at Nailcote Hall.
“This Par 3 championship course is truly a hidden gem just outside historic city of culture Coventry. A course like no other we have played, it was maintained to perfection and offers nine uniquely stunning holes of golf ranging from 95 to 146 yards.
The Cromwell was a really interesting and true test of our short game with elevated greens, most with bunkers around them. All greens were surrounded with lush grass, whilst water comes into play on six of the nine holes.
Respite from bunkers on the last but with water short, long and left is another great test. This course isn’t about power it’s all about feel and finesse and there’s no wonder it is home to the Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship.
The Cromwell was great fun for all abilities. We cannot wait to play here again with the guarantee of a short game improvement. We really enjoyed the day, friendly staff and members in the wonderful 17th Century Country House Hotel. Fantastic for everyone’s short game and great fun!!”

Kirkbymoorside Golf Club Course review By Alan Hedley
It’s often quite difficult to concentrate on your golf at Kirkbymoorside such is the spectacular scenery. But concentrate you must because this challenging golf course set on the edge of the North York Moors National Park is no pushover.
At just over 6,200 off the back tees eight par fours over 400 yards - there’s just one par five - and a sprinkling of tantalising par threes, it’s an excellent, enjoyable test.
But those views are something else - especially over the moors from the 13th tee - and you will see the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hills at their best.
Interestingly, the course starts with a short par three of 138 yards (don’t go long with the tee shot) and there are three short holes in the first six, but there are also a couple of big par fours and one of these short holes ain’t so short!
Still, if you’re putting’s sound and you’re accurate, you should start with a comfortable par but the second presents an immediate risk and reward with the option of cutting the dangerous corner at this 422 yard par four.
Then it’s a long par three of 193 yards over water to a narrow green and you’re beginning to think “this is not easy.”
Keep left at the next par four which is a birdie chance and you’ll need a really good drive to get anything out of the 437 yard fifth, the small well-bunkered green at the 160-yard sixth will also pose problems. Not surprisingly, the 442-yard seventh is stroke index two and it is a cracking par four. It’s a tough right to left tee shot and unless you’re accurate, it may not be a driver for you.
What’s good about Kirkbymoorside is that there is almost always a chance offered to repair any damage, the seventh is followed by a drivable par four of 271 yards, a definite birdie chance.
The ninth is also a chance to let rip with a wide fairway which you need to as it’s 445 yards and needs two good hits to get near.
The 355-yard 10th is a complete contrast with an increasingly narrow fairway and it may well be a hybrid or long iron off the tee as the hole gets tighter the closer you get to the green. The toughest tee shot on the golf course comes at 11, a 444-yard par four with out of bounds left and bushes right. No surprise again that this is stroke one.
Again it’s followed by a risk and reward hole with the 265 yard par four where you can risk the corner to set up a birdie or lay up and play safe. The 415yard 13th has those terrific views from the tee, but concentrate as the drive has to be straight and long on a tree-line fairway to get within range of the green.
The solitary par five follows and at 515 yards would seem straightforward. It is if you play sensibly up short of the road and then over the marker on the top of the hill to leave a short iron to a green sloping left to right.
Best to leave the putt below the hole on the severely sloping green at the 179-yard 15th and the 16th is the start of an excellent finish where you need to decide whether to leave the tee shot on the top of the hill to give a good view on your approach or finish at the bottom of the hill.
The 426-yard 17th demands a good drive left - but not too far left as there’s trouble there - to be able to get at the green and the 18th may be just 321 yards, but it’s tricky with a green that slopes front to back.

Wow Wow Wow – Great Value for Money.
Firstly, the factual detail, sorry it’s got to be done. Kilworth Springs Golf Club, Leicestershire is an 18-hole, par 72 (6278 yards off yellow), private, parkland golf course established in 1993. The course has a good variety of holes, dog legs left and dog legs right. If you miss the wide-open fairways, you will certainly be punished, with panoramic views and no viewing restrictions when eyeing up the next Tee along with good directions and diagrams on the Tees, mapping around the course was easy. The Golf Fees were excellent value from as little as £10.00 weekdays for 9 holes and £15.00 for 18 holes. This golf course would suit the more experienced and amateur golfers, enjoyable and tough. We know the drainage system is good at Kilworth so good all year-round course. It currently has an 800 strong membership but welcomes pay and play.
We knew we were on to a winner on the drive up. With ample parking and then those great views looking over Avon Valley. We had a warm welcome from Byron Forgan the club’s resident Pro, the bar staff were equally as welcoming. Faced with plenty of food and a good line up of cakes in a nice cool bar it was almost difficult to get geared up to Tee off. It was an exceptionally hot day; some might say a bit hot for Golf but not us!!! one or two players were struggling halfway round with the heat (30+), Byron set off on a rescue mission which was good to see, supplying water if needed or a ride back. Another likeable note was the ABC system for pin locations. Pleasing to have the refreshment hut with toilets on the 10th. Good practice areas with driving range, large putting green and practice bunkers means this course really has an array of options for most levels of golfers. The front nine plays like an inland links style course whilst the back 9 were the road to parkland heaven. Loving the layout! Now we get to it -THE BEST HOLE – The 18th because 201 yards (white) 174 (yellow) par 3 over water with no bail out so definitely card wrecking potential.
Rich and Stu’s incidentals
Kilworth have a function room available for hire complete with event catering for weddings, special occasions, and corporate events. Food is served at the bar, very reasonable prices – Loved the Viennese whirl.
