Welcome to Spring 2019 Issue of Spring 2019

Welcome to the Spring edition of Your Golfer Magazine, and what a difference a year makes!! March through to the beginning of April last year can only be described as a disaster in golfing terms. With snow and then flooding, the weather put most clubs across the UK out of action for weeks. However, this year has started very promisingly and it looks like we could be in for a Spring that will favour the ardent golfer. After speaking to many clubs that are featured in this edition, it seems that society golf is already in full swing for many society organisers. So, as always, we here at Your Golfer Magazine have great pleasure in providing golfers across the UK a guide to the best and most cost-effective Spring offers.

Richie Wykes and Mike Hammerton Your Golfer Magazine golf course reviewers.

We are also delighted to announce the addition of Michael Hammerton and Richard Wykes (pictured left) to the Your Golfer team as course reviewers. So why not skip forward to our course review section to find out how they rated Nuneaton Golf Club (North Warwickshire) and Porters Park Golf Club (Hertfordshire)

SAPEY GOLF CLUB RAISES THOUSAN

Sitting remotely on the borders of Herefordshire and Worcestershire the community of Upper Sapey has had good cause to be grateful for the existence of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity on many occasions. Dianne Urquhart was one such patient when she was kicked by a horse, and a few years on, as Sapey Golf & Country Club’s 2018 Lady Captain, she joined forces with Gent’s Captain Gareth Evans to raise £6000 during their captains’ year. “Being fifteen miles from hospital A&E is one of the prices you pay for living in such a beautiful place and I just felt so grateful that the Air Ambulance was there when I needed it. I just had to give something back”. Dianne and Gareth arranged small events throughout the year with the ladies bringing in tasty produce for table sales and a charity ball in the summer was hugely successful bringing in over £4000. Gareth said, “We asked all our contacts for items that we could auction or raffle and people were incredibly generous”. Ten other golf clubs also donated rounds of golf for auction and Dianne used years of sales experience getting pledges from local businesses, many of whom supply the golf club. General Manager, Cheryl Waring said, “There’s an incredible community spirit at Sapey Golf and Country Club so everyone got involved in one way or another - even those who didn’t attend the summer ball helped by donating prizes or buying raffle tickets. The bar team got involved too, putting their “keep the change” tips in the tin on the bar and we filled two of them during the year”. Midlands Air Ambulance Charity maintains 3 helicopters and needs to raise over £9m a year to keep the service going.

Michelle McCracken the Fundraising Executive for Worcestershire said “We were absolutely thrilled to be invited to receive a donation for £6000 from Dianne, Gareth and the members of Sapey Golf and Country Club. This will help us attend two lifesaving missions and purchase medical equipment for use on our patients. Being situated in a rural area and needing medical intervention quickly, makes the need of our service so vital. We receive no Government or National Lottery funding at all and simply couldn’t save lives without the generosity and support of the community, businesses and individuals like Dianne, Gareth and the Sapey Golf and Country Club members. Thank you to everyone that was involved.” For further information please visit www.midlandsairambulance.com.

Sue continues to work full time for the British Insurance Brokers Association whilst Bob , who is retired, is busy with his many other activities which include being a Chair of School Governors and his passion for playing the saxophone in a local band. The couple will spend a year in office, representing the club at events both home and away. Bob said “I feel really proud representing Enville Golf Club, its’ a great club with two courses, and fantastic facilities. For me it’s the best club in the country” Sue said that representing the club was an honour and being able to play golf had been very beneficial in her business life. “Sadly there are less and less ladies taking up the sport and I am especially proud of the initiatives the club are involved with providing opportunities for ladies to get into golf” said Sue. Bob and Sue will support the Army Benevolent Fund the Soldiers Charity throughout their term of office. This charity is very important to them having established a close friendship with army personnel many years ago. Llanymynech Golf Club open their course to new lady golfers

Following the R&A’s launch of their Charter to get more Women into Golf, Llanymynech Golf Club buy into the ‘changing face of golf.’ Females are still an under-represented group when it comes down to participation in Golf representing an average of only 15% of members in the UK. TORO IRRIGATION SAVES WATER BY 25 PERCENT A

Royal Birkdale Golf Club has saved 25 percent on water

The timing could not have been more fortuitous as Royal Birkdale Golf Club turned on its new Toro irrigation system in April 2018 just in time for one of the hottest summers the country has ever experienced. Little did Chris Whittle, course manager at Royal Birkdale, know, as the tender process for a new irrigation system started in September 2017, that within weeks of installation a record equalling heatwave would hit the country.

“We had a Toro system that had always served us well and the service from distributor Reesink Turfcare, L.S. Systems and Robin Hume Associates has always been great so there was no question we’d go with anyone else, but we needed more control. Lynx was the obvious choice and no sooner was it installed than it was put to the ultimate test!”

As golf courses fought to prevent their turf from being burnt brown and water costs rose accordingly, Chris was in the fortunate position of having efficient, accurate and precise irrigation at his fingertips with a new Toro Lynx central control system and all new sprinklers, including Toro Infinity, across the 240acre 18-hole links course in Southport, Merseyside.

And the system triumphed in the face of adversity, says Chris: “We’re delighted with the results Toro has delivered. We spent some time learning the system, there was tweaking required as we set it up, making it specific to the course and making sure we maximised its capabilities. Once that was done, operation was easy and straight-forward. As I’m sure you can imagine having remote access to make real-time adjustments was particularly useful this summer!

“The time had come to replace our system,” says Chris, who has been course manager at the prestigious club for almost a quarter of a century.

“Prioritising water allocation meant we kept the course playing well, looking fine and in the best possible health,”

r consumption during the 2018 heatwave thanks to Toro. Chris continues. “Not only that, but despite the need for more irrigation than we’ve experienced for many years, we made huge savings in water consumption.” 25 percent savings and that’s a conservative estimate, says Chris: “It was a figure that was unexpected in how significant it was. We hoped to make savings with the new system obviously, but not while we contended with extreme heat and lack of rain, the worst of which we hadn’t seen in years! When we realised how much we’d saved we couldn’t believe it.” Royal Birkdale has held more championship and international events since World War Two than any other course in the world and has been voted the number one golf club in England, one of the top five clubs in the UK and among the top 35 in the world, so standards were expected to remain high despite the conditions. And Toro could be relied upon to help do just that.

CARDEN PARK

NOMINATED FOR PRESTIGIOUS WORLD GOLF AWARDS Carden Park has been nominated for two awards at the renowned World Golf Awards, demonstrating that international experts continue to see it as providing one of England’s very best golfing experiences. The luxurious golf destination has been nominated in two highly competitive categories, England’s Best Golf Course and England’s Best Golf Hotel. Winners will be announced at the glamorous World Golf Awards ceremony held at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort in Abu Dhabi in October 2019. The venue offers an array of golfing facilities, perfect for any golfing needs including 198 bedrooms, driving range, Clubhouse complete with Pro-shop and Jack’s bar plus two championship golf courses. The Cheshire Course, one of two courses at Carden Park, is situated at the back of the estate. It opened in 1993, and pre-dates the hotel by four years. The championship course has been hosted pre-qualifying events for the European tour, and enjoys stunning views across the 1,000acre estate to the Welsh hills beyond. Since opening, more than a million rounds of golf have been played on the Cheshire Course, and ongoing investment ensures it continues to provide one of the best possible golfing experiences.

The second golf course at Carden Park is the Nicklaus Course, perfect for golfers of all levels. It was famously designed by the great Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve. Nicknamed ‘The Golden Bear’, many regard Jack Nicklaus as the greatest golfer of all time, winning a record 18 major championships. Perhaps then, it is no surprise the Nicklaus Course continues to scoop international awards. Situated next to the hotel’s own vineyard, the course allows an average fourball to complete the course in 4 ¾ hours. Carden Park is no stranger to the World Golf Awards. In 2018 it beat an array of UK golfing destinations to win the title of England’s Best Golf Hotel. This year, it is looking to go one better by picking up two awards. The World Gold awards are the most prestigious awards programme in the golf tourism industry, and serve to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism. Carden Park’s General Manager Hamish Ferguson commented: “It’s fantastic to be nominated two years running at these international awards, and is testament to what we’re offering at Carden Park. Our outstanding facilities and staff have been recognised again, and I am proud our standards have continued to hit the high benchmark we set ourselves. We continually invest in our golf facilities ensuring we always offer the best experience for our guests whether they are playing competitive golf, enjoying a leisurely golf day or visiting for a longer break.”

Review A lovely golf course, with challenging varied holes and good value for money, Nuneaton Golf Club provides a test to even the most accomplished of golfer. A gem in the Midlands, Nuneaton Golf Club is the home of the European Tour’s Andy Sullivan and is easy to find, just 10-15 minutes from the M6/M69 Coventry junction. As I drove along the golf club’s drive, it was hard to ignore the view as it runs up alongside the 18th hole bringing you to the club house. The first thing that we notice, is an ample-sized car park and a fantastically-appointed, raised terrace overlooking the 18th green, the centre piece of the clubhouse building. There is also a good-sized putting green by the clubhouse and a chipping green and practice bunker by the 1st and 10 tees. On our arrival and whilst checking in with the pro shop, the staff of Nuneaton Golf Club were pleasant and friendly. From the professional shop to the bar, every member of the club’s team greeted me with smile and a warm welcome. Nothing was too much. Due to the recent poor weather and in order to preserve the fairways, the club’s professional team provided me with a small mat to take around the course and play off (or you do have the option to take the ball 90 degrees of the fairway and drop it). Head Pro, Craig told us that this simple procedure occurs for four weeks of the year, ‘which leads to great fairways for the summer months’.

The golf course Out on the well-manicured fairways, Nuneaton Golf Club was a testing golf course whilst also being great fun! Measuring 6147 yards from the yellow tees, the par 71 golf course comprises a variety of par 3s, 4s and 5s. During my round, I was particularly impressed with: The opening, 1st hole which is a straight downhill par 4 – a nice start to what proved to be a tricky round! The 3rd hole - another par 4 - SI 1, 443 yards dog-leg right - a risk and reward hole, players are tempted to play their approach over the trees to the right hand corner of the fairway. The signature dog leg left, 15th hole calls for some thought. A well-positioned drive up to the pond must be long enough to give you a shot on to the green otherwise this hole calls for a lay-up!

Nuneaton Golf Club... With Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes.

Michael & Richard arrive at the club The long par 5, 18th, is uphill and bending round to the right to a small green - a great finishing hole. The greens were very consistent and, on the day, were running at a fair speed! They are quite small with trouble behind most. Nuneaton golf course is set in tranquil surroundings creating a peaceful ambience to a round of golf.

A good variety of holes offering a unique blend of dog-legs, short and long holes; tree-lined fairways and raised tees, made for truly memorable experience.

You must hit the fairways to give you a chance to get on those small greens!

Review

If you do play Porters Park, you won't forget it in a hurry! Richard and I recently jumped at the chance to play the Porters Park Golf Club in Radlett, Hertfordshire. In glorious weather, it was the perfect day to play a course which has hosted Open Championship regional qualifiers in the past. Easy to find, just 10-15 minutes from the M1, Porters Park is located only 15 miles from the centre of London but you would never know.

The first impression as you enter the club is an impressive one;

The clubhouse is a beautiful looking building with a fantastic putting green and patio. The patio itself overlooks both the 1st tee and 18th green as well as a large practice green, practice bunkers and two driving bays. The putting green is synonymous of the eighteen greens out on the course - all the same pace and excellent to putt on. The greens were also very receptive you can really attack the flags. Porters Park use a Red, Yellow and White system to alert players to the day’s flag location. A Red flag demonstrates that the flag is positioned to the front of the green; Yellow, to the middle and a White flag means that it is located to the back of the putting surface. We found this a very helpful system, especially as there are a few long, narrow greens which are mostly elevated out on the course.

Porters Park can be perceived as a short course at just 6,066 yards from the yellow tees. This particular par 70 course seems to play longer and calls for good course management skills with two Par 5 holes and a few lengthy Par 4s. The fairways are very well groomed and the surroundings of the golf course are stunning with beautiful scenery and stunning views. One of the most picturesque parkland golf courses that I have played. Porters Park Features four stunning par 3s which will be remembered for all of the right reasons. My favourite hole was the Par 3, 9th, Overall, the course is well protected with some interesting traps and strategically placed bunkers. However, with the sand in the bunkers being of such high quality, they were excellent to play from. We also noticed a stream that runs through the heart of the course. The club house and extensive patio is an ideal area to relax for a drink and a bite to eat following your round. The staff could not do enough for you and the members were extremely welcoming, which, all in all went to creating a really warm and pleasant atmosphere. A fantastic way to end a fantastic day at a fantastic forward thinking golf club. If you do play Porters Park, I can guarantee that you will not forget the experience in a hurry.

With golf in decline in the UK and Ireland, Golf Even More brings additional value to being a golf club member. Registration to the website creates a network of golfers locally and nationally providing opportunities to play golf courses as a guest whilst fully utilising their own club membership. Golf Even More is the ideal platform for golfers to build connections and increase accessibility to golf courses, with the overall goal of increasing participation in golf played across the UK and Ireland. Golf club members have the opportunity to expand their playing experience - putting the value back into memberships and allowing them to play golf courses that they may not have had the chance to before Golf Even More. Launched in 2019, Golf Even More was the brainchild of a keen golfer who wished to help combat the decline in the sport partly due to a lack of visibility on terrestrial television in his opinion, and give golfers the opportunity to get increased value from their golf club membership. As a golfer and golf tourist, founder Gerry was keen to play a few different golf courses on his “wish list. When playing a new course, the pro shop would often place Gerry with other members who knew the course - this is where the idea for Golf Even More came from. The company now meets the golf club members’ desire to play new courses with a current member as a guide or companion.

There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:

Match Play

If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole. If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

Stroke Play

If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.

Mark your ball!

A company which was formed with golfers in mind, stampyourballs.com was founded by Inventor and Managing Director, Paul Green who once made the fatal golfing error of playing the wrong ball. Following the mishap, Paul set about developing a product that eliminates the risk.

Scotland & Wales

See the evolution of w Located just a few minutes south of Edinburgh, the Lothians region is one of Scotland’s finest golf break destinations with a choice of well over twenty-two golf courses to test all ages and abilities. The rugged and beautiful coastline of East Lothian is affectionately known as Scotland’s Golf Coast with so much choice within an hour’s drive from the historic and lively capital city of Edinburgh and its international airport. Visiting groups can enjoy a blend of traditional links exposed to the varying wind conditions of the region and an excellent array of inland golf courses; many steeped in history and all offering a warm welcome to visiting golfers. Away from the golf course, visitors to the Lothians can enjoy many life experiences. One of the finest outing for a discerning golfer visiting the region could be taking in the surroundings of a working whisky distillery.

From ancient Greek technology, to a cottage industry in Scotland, and finally a global pheromone, the evolution of Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a lesson in ingenuity, craft and the law of unintended consequences. During the years between the 12th and 14th centuries, the process of distillation moved from the east to eastern Europe and eventually, the west. The church was originally against the production of distilled spirits but eventually allowed monasteries to house still, with their herb gardens providing the ingredients for early medicines and liqueurs. Despite a crash towards the end of the 19th century, stiff competition from other, whisky-producing nations, two world wars and the great depression, Scotch Whisky has survived to become the world’s number one spirit of choice. Today, it is enjoyed by people of all backgrounds, creeds and clans and is a spirit to toast all occasions.

whisky in East Lothian People and places don’t just shape a single malt whisky’s flavour, they change the course of its future. Glenkinchie Distillery gives visitors an insight in to the history and creation of its single malt Scotch whisky that is loved by so many today. Farmers John and George Rate chose the Lothian site for their Milton Distillery in 1825 and were recorded as the license holders for the Glenkinchie Distillery in 1837.

Today, Glenkinchie Distillery is visited by over 45,000 visitors each year all with a passion for the Lothians and Scottish malt whisky. Just fifteen miles from the capital, Glenkinchie is the Edinburgh Malt of choice. Visitors to East Lothian can catch a shuttle bus from the centre of Edinburgh twice a day, seven days a week.

After being bought out and transformed to a working farm, the site was later revived in 1880 as a Distillery by a consortium of expert brewers, blenders and wine merchants. In 1914 a new company, Scottish Malt Distillers was founded from the site in East Lothian.

For further information, please contact Glenkinchie Distillery Pencaitland, Tranent EH34 5ET

Glenkinchie Distillery continued to produce high quality single malt whisky through the World Wars and as with many distilleries of its time, became a museum of malt whisky in 1968.

Scotland’s rolling hills, stunning coastlines and dense parklands, are known to hide some of the UK’s best golf courses; Kilspindie Golf Club is amongst one of these. As one might expect from a traditional Scottish links, it lies immediately on the coast and is host to a range of wildlife including seals and migratory geese. The views here are particularly stunning; on a clear day you may well make out Edinburgh Castle, which lies less than an hour away by car. Without a doubt, this is one of few courses for which it can be said that its outstanding quality is matched by its outstanding beauty. Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, friendliness and inclusivity. With famous festivals, dormant volcanos and world-renowned museums, the Scottish capital more than holds its own with the other great capitals of Europe. For a long weekend away, you would be hard pressed to find a city with as much culture, shopping and history as Edinburgh; this makes it the perfect city break for couples and golf societies alike.

More locally to Kilspindie Golf Club, Aberlady nature reserve – one of the first of its kind in the area, has been dedicated to keeping this particular stretch of coast around Aberlady Bay, untainted by human influence for over half a century. The diverse wildlife, both animals and wild flowers, offer visitors a chance to really become reacquainted with the beauty of the landscape, as well as a serenity that is all too seldom achieved in our busy modern lives. Kilspindie is reputed to be the 35th oldest golf club in the world, instituted in 1867 and with between 27-28 thousand pairs of feet enjoying these links every year, the club’s success is testament to its lasting design and layout. It’s challenging but is a clear favourite of many who have played it, with quick greens and well-defined fairways. It is a club proud of its history, even hosting an alternative Ryder Cup, with 12-man teams playing with pre1930’s hickory shafted clubs.

Whilst the course has remained largely unchanged, the clubhouse has been expanding to deal with the demands of the modern golfer. Whilst maintaining its charm and personality; it still has its original “Gentleman’s Locker Room and Bar”; the clubhouse is now able to cater for a range of events with style and comfort. Whilst the bar might be small, its stock is not, boasting an excellent array of beverages including over 80 different malt whiskeys (although we recommend you spread these out over a few visits). Warmth and friendliness lie at the heart of this club, and comments such as this find their way into almost every review. Visitors pay the same as members for food and drink; it is clear that Kilspindie Golf Club want to create an open community of golfers all of whom are drawn to the club by the same things; an incredible course in a stunning environment. It is no wonder, so many people are drawn back year after year and Kilspindie is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a hidden gem of Scotland.

Llanymynech Golf Club

TEE OFF IN WALES AND PUTT (Europes only dual coun Have you ever imagined being able to drive a ball from one country to another?? Sounds fanciful I know, however, let me introduce you to a golf club that can offer just that and more. Sitting just south of Oswestry in Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, with Offas Dyke (the largest ancient monument following the border between England and Wales) running through the course Llanymynech offers an abundance of greenery and some of the most fantastic scenery you will find anywhere in the UK. Due to the fantastic drainage that this club has painstakingly maintained through its history, Llanymynech can provide golfers of all abilities a year round course that plays as well in the winter as it does in the summer. In fact Ian Woosnam first learnt to play golf here at the age of nine years old and Llanymynech still remains one of his favourite courses to play to this day. In fact the Woosnam family have got a long tradition with Llanymynech Golf Club with both Ian’s Mother and Father being previous captains and still have a firm association with it up to the present day.

T OUT IN ENGLAND!!!! ntry golf course)

With 15 holes in Wales and 3 holes in England you are provided with the unique opportunity to drive off on the 4th hole in Wales and actually putt out on the same hole in England! Making Llanymynech Golf Club the only dual nationality golf course in Europe. The twelth hole (the highest point) on this fantastic yet challenging golf course offers stunning views of Shropshire and the Welsh border with a toposcope to point out the places of interest , making your golf experience as pleasurable as can be found in this part of the UK. A club member and past lady captain goes on to say we aim to provide great day’s golf and a friendly welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.

In our opinion we feel that if you are looking for a golf break or society day in this region then Llanymynech Golf Club really has to be your first choice. The club themselves offer a website, which is available as a link at the bottom of this feature which enables you to book tee times, enter open competitions as well as membership opportunities and visitor information. With Green fees starting at ÂŁ15 there is absolutely no reason to miss out on playing this gem of a course whilst taking in the stunning views of the Welsh hills and the Shropshire countryside.
