Llandrindod Wells

Builth Wells
Kington
Llandrindod Wells golf course was designed in 1904 by golfing legend Harry Vardon. Vardon used the natural landscape to create a unique golf course that is a challenge to every golfer whatever their handicap. If you find playing bunker shots a bit of a trial then this is one golf course you will love as there are no sand bunkers anywhere on the course.
A stunning parkland golf course designed 40 years ago by veteran Scottish designer C K Cotton in the grounds of Penoyre House and with indescribable views over the Brecon Beacons. During the 40 years since Cotton laid out the course it has matured into a first class golf course that has been host to numerous golf championships.
Builth Wells is a course of two halves, the front nine was laid out in 1926 in a traditional parkland style, whilst the newer back nine offers a stunning variety of holes which will not only keep you thinking, but will also keep you totally entranced. If you speak to Simon, the club's professional, he will surely tell you to look out for the 10th and the 16th holes.
Kington Golf Club is the highest 18 hole golf course in England and is Herefordshire’s #1 golf course. The golfcourse was designed in 1926 by Major Cecil Hutchinson (who also designed Gleneagles) and is set in glorious National Trust land. The course overlooks the rich agricultural land of Herefordshire and the Welsh borders and offers unrivalled panoramic views.

Cave’s The Man At Berkhamsted Trophy BERKHAMSTED, HERTFORDSHIRE, UK - Rising star Seb Cave took the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy last weekend by tempering his normally aggressive game – and by using the bad weather to his advantage. Big-hitting Coxmoor Golf Club 17 year old Cave shot 208 (-5) to win the historic event by three shots from 16 year old Harley Smith from The Rayleigh Club in Essex. The England Boys team mates were the only two golfers to break par in an event where the weather sorely tested the 108 competitors, including – for the first time in 63 years – several female golfers following Berkhamsted Golf Club’s decision to open up the UK’s traditional season-opening elite men’s tournament to both sexes. Blizzards and high winds characterised the first two rounds on, and Saturday’s 36-hole finish was cut to a single round after heavy frost delayed the start of play. Cave, who at +3.9 handicap was one of the early starters on Day One in the worst of the week’s weather, had two key elements in his game plan which ultimately paved his way to victory. “I knew the playing conditions would be extremely tough, so I got myself into the right mental state from the first tee” he said. “I knew that I would beat half the field just by accepting the weather.” He also outsmarted the international field by developing a special tee shot to counter Berkhamsted’s famously intricate, bunker-free challenge. “Most players were hitting long irons off the tee to stay on the fairway, but I had practised a knockdown low-running tee shot with driver which kept the ball under the wind, and meant that I was hitting more wedges into the greens than everyone else.” In the final round, a superb five iron to five feet on the 14th for birdie gave the Blackburn-born Cave, who was playing in the final group, the smell of victory, and he learnt about his three-shot lead as he walked to the 17th tee. Two solid pars later he finished with a closing 68 (-3) and lifted the Berkhamsted Trophy in celebration of the biggest tournament win in his young career to date.
“It’s a fantastic feeling to win, and the greens at Berkhamsted were the best I’ve played on so far this year” said Cave, who has a college place at the University of Alabama Birmingham waiting for him in the autumn of 2023. “As there’s no bunkers you don’t get your normal spin control from the hazards around the greens, but my short game held up – and it had to, as I know how low Harley Smith can shoot!” “Berkhamsted makes you think, especially off the tee” said Harley Smith, whose final day 67 (-4) was the low round of the week. “I had to play aggressively because I know how good Seb is, and it almost paid off. The golf course was in superb condition for the time of year, the greens were amazingly good”. England Boys Lead Coach Rob Watts, who welcomed Seb Cave into the England squad in autumn 2021, was impressed but not surprised by Cave’s emphatic victory. “Seb has a strong personality, an impressive work rate, and is always immaculately prepared. “As well as being a big hitter he is also highly skilled around the greens, which makes him an absolutely formidable competitor.” As for the Berkhamsted Trophy itself, Watts is in no doubt as to its importance. “The season starts with the Berkhamsted, no doubt about it” he said. “This event is pitched spot-on. It is massively useful because it gives elite golfers a proper event to start the season with, and it sets the tone for the year – on a fantastic golf course.”
“The level of competition in men’s golf is extremely high, and the event was good experience” said 17 year old Olivia Lee from Gerrards Cross, who became the first female golfer to play in a traditionally-male elite amateur golf tournament when she teed off just after 8am on the first day. “It’s the first time I’ve played a golf course without bunkers, and it is harder than you’d expect, but Berkhamsted was in great condition.” Howard Craft, Berkhamsted Golf Club Manager, said: “This Trophy will be remembered for years, both for the weather and for the arrival of female competitors such as Olivia Lee. She played superbly too, and outscored dozens of top male golfers to be in the top third of the field after the first round. “Olivia Williams from Worcestershire ultimately finished low female, and along with Olivia Lee, Ciara Rushmer and Grace Rigby she is now an indelible part of the history of girl’s golf. “Despite the weather Gerald Bruce and the greenkeeping team had presented the golf course in its best-ever condition for this year’s Trophy, and we were overjoyed with people’s reactions to it. The work we’ve done over the last three years as regards irrigation, and latterly with our golf course consultants Turfgrass, has paid dividends. “After a two-year COVID delay, the Berkhamsted Trophy is back where it rightfully belongs, and our congratulations go to Seb Cave – a worthy winner, and a very bright prospect for the future.” Previous Berkhamsted Trophy winners have included World #1 Luke Donald and double-Major winner Sandy Lyle, as well as amateur golf legends Gary Wolstenholme and the two-time winning Walker Cup Captain, Peter McEvoy OBE. The Berkhamsted Trophy will return on Thursday 30th March 2023, and is open to both male and female competitors.

A RANGE OF ENTERTAINMENT NOW AVAILABLE AT CHELSFIELD LAKES WITH LAUNCH OF TRACKMAN Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre has taken a huge step forward in the world of golf technology with the grand opening of its TrackMan range system following a £500,000 investment into the Kent-based facility. The state-of-the-art system is now open to the public and has transformed the driving range experience for players of all skill levels, giving its users the chance to try out a variety of games and modes via a 27-inch touchscreen in each bay. The TrackMan software allows users to track and view ball speed, carry, launch angle, precise distances and shot shaping, all crucial information to help golfers to better understand their play. As well as acting as feedback for the established golfer, the system will also entertain new players with a range of enjoyable games such as ‘closest to the pin’ and ‘longest drive’, with a view of further increasing Chelsfield Lakes’ offering to the novice player and encouraging an increased participation in the game. The perfect location to try the sport in groups, the newly-completed bays all come with charging stations, heaters and the ability to order food from the comfort of the benches, making it the ideal spot to try a new hobby or have fun with friends or family. New Astroturf, targets, bay dividers and the highest quality Srixon range balls are among some of the other changes and additions as part of the driving range refurbishment.
The Club Room bar has also been rebranded to the TrackMan Bar as part of the revamp of the range and will be serving a new menu of delicious food and beverages, as well as showing Sky Sports for guests to enjoy live football, golf, rugby, cricket and more. If golfers are looking to get fitted for some new clubs or hone their swing ahead of another packed golf season, there are two additional rooms which have been equipped with a separate Trackman 4 video system, designed to help the club’s PGA professionals analyse a player’s swing in great detail. Nick Hughes, general manager at Chelsfield Lakes Golf Centre, said: “We are delighted to have the TrackMan range open to the public now and see our vision come to life. We really wanted to broaden the appeal of the centre and encourage more people to try and enjoy golf and this addition will really put us on the map as not only a fantastic golf club, but also an entertainment venue for the local community to enjoy. “The TrackMan screens help to offer a totally new golfing experience to players with the various games and modes, all of which help to make the range a far more welcoming activity to new golfers, and families, as well as giving the more experienced player all the tools they need to improve their game and lower their handicap.”

FUNDRAISER FUNDRAISER FUNDRAISER FUNDRAISER 3 year old Florence (Pictured) has recently been diagnosed with Late Infantile CLN2 disease, which is more commonly known as Batten Disease. This disease is a very rare genetic condition of which there is currently no cure. Affected children like Florence will live a relatively normal life until around the age of 2 or 3 where symptoms will start to show, such as seizures and difficulty coordinating movements. As Florence gets older she will lose the ability to see, speak, eat, walk, think etc. and eventually will end up with vision loss, in a wheelchair and on a feeding tube. She will receive an ongoing enzyme infusion treatment every 2 weeks that will delay her regression in motor skills but it will not help her sight or cure this disease. Florence is not expected to live into her teenage years. As any parent would be, we are devastated and desperate to do anything we can to help her. Michael Madden (one of our leading golf course reviewers has recently organised a charity golf day which is to be held at Windmill Village Hotel And Golf Club on the 6th May 2022 in order to raise funds to facilitate resources and help flory and her family through this heart-breaking journey. Your Golfer Magazine, along with Burton On Trent Golf Club fully support this fundraiser. If you would like to make any donations to help support flory please email mikemad1958@gmail.com for more information as to how you can help. Florys family are trying to raise every penny they can to help Flory and would welcome any support from the golfing community.

International Series England to Debut at Slaley Hall New venue and date for the Asian Tour’s maiden event in the UK, player pathways to LIV Golf Invitational London at stake for competitors London and Singapore (April 1, 2022) – The International Series today announced a new date and venue for International Series England which will now be staged at Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort – one of the great golfing venues in the north of England. The US$2 million tournament, the ninth event on Asian Tour schedule and the second International Series event, will be played at the famous venue from June 2-5, paving the way for the Asian Tour to break new ground and sanction an event in the UK for the first time. The International Series England was originally slated to be played at the Centurion Club during the second week of June, but it was moved one week earlier to accommodate the LIV Golf Invitational at Centurion. Importantly, the re-scheduling will give competitors the chance to qualify for what will most likely be the most lucrative event of their careers in the week that follows: The top-three players from the cumulative International Series rankings, through Thailand and England, will gain starts at the LIV Golf Invitational The top-two finishers in the International Series England not otherwise exempt will also play their way into the mega event The top player on the Asian Tour Order of Merit at the time, along with the top two players from the 2020-21 final Order of Merit will also gain births
“This is a giant step forward for the Asian Tour and we are fortunate that the organisers have been able to accommodate the change in plans. The new date allows us to provide even greater rewards for the competitors. They are not only playing for the Asian Tour Order of Merit, but they will now also able to play their way into a series of ultra-lucrative events throughout the year,” said Cho Minn Thant, commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour. “The Asian Tour is currently enjoying a remarkable period of growth and as a consequence we are able to give our members the opportunity to travel and play in new parts of the world. And, of course, to be able to visit an area which such great golfing heritage is of special significance and meaning.” Slaley Hall is located in the Northumberland countryside and is a short drive away from Newcastle. Often described at the “Augusta of the North” the club boasts two courses: The Hunting and The Priestman. The venue hosted a European Tour event, The Great North Open, from 1996 to 2002 with Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie and Retief Goosen all enjoying a victory there. “Having the opportunity to be part of this innovative event is exceptionally exciting for The QHotels Collection,” said Keith Pickard, golf, health club and spa director for The QHotels Collection. “We have a wealth of experience in hosting tournaments and are delighted that Slaley Hall has been chosen as the official host venue. We have been very privileged to host some of the world’s top stars over the years and we are looking forward to welcoming the new generation of golf talent to Slaley Hall.”
American Sihwan Kim claimed victory in the International Series Thailand at Black Mountain Golf Club and currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit heading into next week’s Trust Golf Asian Mixed Cup – one of two back-to-back events being jointly-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour. The Asian Tour will also be making stops in Korea and Japan prior to heading to England. The second half of the year will see stops in Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia before heading to the Middle East and then culminating in China, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The International Series – new top-tier tournaments integrated with the Asian Tour schedule – was launched this year and will see 10 events played each year for the next decade. “We are already breaking boundaries with The International Series as we make our second stop of the season in the UK – a first for the Asian Tour. It was our mission from the outset to grow the game globally, and I am proud to deliver on our promise,” said Greg Norman. “The opportunity and pathways that this presents for players on the Asian Tour – both from a financial and playing perspective – cannot be understated. I will be anxiously following along to see who will get the life changing invite into the LIV Golf event the following week.” In October last year, Greg Norman was announced as CEO of LIV Golf Investments – a newly formed company whose purpose is to holistically improve the health of professional golf on a truly global scale to help unlock the sports’ untapped worldwide potential. LIV Golf Investments provided $300 million in seed money to the Asian Tour to launch The International Series. PIF, one of the world’s largest and most impactful sovereign wealth funds with a diverse international investment portfolio, is the majority shareholder in LIV Golf Investments. Additional dates and locations for 2022-2023 International Series events to be announced soon.

LANCASHIRE GOLF UNION DELIVERS £500 EASTER GIFT TO CLUBS JOINING GREENCLUB The Lancashire Golf Union has given its full backing to GreenClub’s drive to make the golf industry more sustainable and is offering a £500 grant to any member golf clubs partnering with the sustainability specialists this month. The county’s ruling body, one of the biggest golf unions in England with 139 golf clubs, has agreed to provide half the costs for any member venue signing up to the innovative GreenClub Lite service before May 1. Mark Bardsley, county secretary of the Lancashire Golf Union, moved swiftly to act after Mike Gray, GreenClub’s business manager, outlined the importance of clubs and venues adopting an improved long-term approach to sustainability and carbon neutrality in the wake of the growing energy crisis at a recent presentation. And golf clubs in north-west England have been quick to take advantage of the county’s incentive with Formby Golf Club, a regular host of leading national and international events, among the first venues to sign up to GreenClub Lite. Bardsley said: “The ever-increasing cost of energy is at the top of the agenda of many of our clubs, and it’s important that we do whatever we can to support them in the present climate.
“After listening to Mike and reviewing what GreenClub has to offer, we were impressed with their expertise and it made perfect sense for us to partner with them. We would encourage as many of our members as possible to take us up on our grant proposal.” Stuart Leech, general manager/secretary at Formby Golf Club, said: “Formby is delighted to be working with GreenClub. We are passionate about doing all we can to be as sustainable as possible, and they can provide a clear roadmap, with good, impartial advice, on best ways to do this. “To have access to solutions for everything from recycling to sustainable energy provision and capacity, in one place, is ideal, and we are grateful for them helping us create a roadmap for all our activities, on a number of fronts, leading to our 2030 objectives.” Complementing GreenClub’s premium service and designed to offer a summary of the improvements that are possible, GreenClub Lite was launched earlier this year and delivers a cost-effective solution to clubs seeking to adopt a greener approach and embark on the path to ultimately becoming a ‘Net Zero’, carbon-neutral venue.
enClubenergy In addition to providing an environmental policy statement, a comprehensive online business overview of a club’s operations and an entire estate review to identify opportunities to generate their own renewable energy sources, each venue will receive official GreenClub Lite accreditation, a report outlining key findings and recommendations for the next steps and regular updates and newsletters as part of the GreenClub Lite community.
As well as providing consultation services to assess current and future needs of any business as they seek to reduce their carbon emissions, venues can also become generators of their own green renewable energy by utilising renewable energy options to ensure venues have greater independence from traditional and ever-more expensive energy supply.
Gray said: “We’re thrilled to have joined forces with the Lancashire Golf Union with the initiative, and the partnership is a big step in the right direction of raising awareness for how golf clubs can meet the many environmental challenges that the industry is facing. “All golf clubs and venues are different, and the beauty of GreenClub Lite is that it is a simple and easy way to providing a summary of what improvements could be possible so that clubs can make informed and considered decisions about the best next steps to take.” A partner of the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, GreenClub works with the non-profit international organisation to promote sustainability across a range of different platforms and markets in the UK and Europe, while Portmarnock Golf Club, London Golf Club and Frilford Heath Golf Club are among the high-profile venues to have engaged its services to help achieve their long-term goals of becoming carbon neutral.

OPEN QUALIFYING SELECTION UNDERSCORES RISE OF DUNDONALD LINKS AS ELITE TOURNAMENT VENUE Dundonald Links has further bolstered its impressive schedule of golf events after being selected as one of four venues in Great Britain and Ireland that will host Final Qualifying for The Open from 2023 to 2026. The golf resort venue on Scotland’s west coast will play host to a field of more than 70 golfers next July as elite players, including those who have been successful in Regional Qualifying events, fight it out for a chance to tee it up at The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. Following huge investment from owners Darwin Escapes, which included improvements to the golf course and the creation of a state-of-theart clubhouse and luxury lodges, the new-look Dundonald Links Resort was unveiled in November last year. The resort is set to host several prestigious professional and amateur tournaments in the next 18 months too, with the Stephen Gallacher Foundation 54-hole tournament for boys and girls in May, as well as a visit from the Tartan Pro Tour later that month, the developmental golf tour owned by 1999 Open champion, Paul Lawrie.
These events bolster the already packed event schedule, with the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open visiting in July and The Trilby Tour Grand Final already confirmed to take place in September. In further positive news, Dundonald Links is proving to be a draw with leisure golfers too, attracted by the opportunity to stay in the resort’s flexible range of luxury lodges and hotel suites, dine at the signature Canny Crow restaurant, play the on-site Kyle-Phillips-designed links and to sample other west coast golfing highlights. The upcoming summer is huge for golf in Scotland and, to celebrate, Dundonald Links has launched a new range of packages for stays throughout the year, starting from £295pp. Ian Ferguson, general manager at Dundonald Links said: “We are delighted to have been announced as a host for final Open qualifying in 2023, as it represents another exciting opportunity to showcase our stunning course and facilities. “Everyone knows the prestige of The Open, and we are excited to be a part of the history of this fantastic golfing event, we can’t wait to see what the players make of the resort!”

The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart. There are over fifty golf courses to choose from in Ayrshire and Arran. Visitors can choose from classic links to majestic inland layouts. The open was first played in South Ayrshire in October 1860. Eight golf professionals including Willie Park Snr and Old Tom Morris played three rounds over the 12-hole Prestwick course in one day. Over 150 years later, the Open Championship remains golf’s most prestigious professional tournament and Ayrshire retains its golfing heritage with two Open Championship venues located in the region. The uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club offer some fantastic green fee rates for visitor as well as some of the most reasonably-priced membership packages in Ayrshire, the home of golf.
Although the club has standard green fee rates for weekdays, Loudon Gowf offers significant savings for certain times of the day, particularly if players are prepared to avoid the busiest times. A range of last minute deals are also at the club’s website, loudongowfclub.co.uk The club has two buggies that can be booked online. If you require a golf clubs, trolleys, caddies or catering for your group this can also be arranged at the time of booking with competitive rates available to regular visitors as well as first time guests.
A proud history and bright future The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course. Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967. Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.
Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.
Why not see for yourself? Ayrshire and the surrounding terrain encompasses arguably the finest collection of links golf courses in the world and with quality accommodation, fine dining, heritage and charisma on its doorstep offers a truly unique experience. Boasting spectacular views over the River Clyde, the great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the region’s close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers.
Loudoun Gowf Club offer a range of 18, 27 and 36-hole packages available for visiting parties with a professional team on hand to ensure that the day runs smoothly.

Twice a Captain of AGC and a veterinary surgeon in the town. Geoff Searles virtually saved the club from extinction in the lean years after WWII.
3 Pitch
Residents of and visitors to Tichborne House played cricket on this broad, flat expanse. (The hoi polloi also had their own pitch, further north on the ground now taken by the by-pass).
4 Don’t Dally!
Especially when the wind is from the south. (The name Pooh Corner was also considered for this one but rejected on the grounds of taste).
5 Appledown
The track that skirts the eastern boundary of the course is known as Appledown Lane. It eventually meets Cheriton Lane near the battlefield site.
6 Youngs
A mark of respect and affection for the family who farmed this field and provided many Captains, champions and club officers over half a century.
7 Hassock’s
The entire left side of this long hole is bounded by Hassock’s Copse, though it is actually a 40-acre wood.
8 Plateau
No explanation required – but it could just as easily have been called “Water Jump,” for that depression in the fairway 150 yards from the tee dates to when this was the town’s racecourse. It was much deeper then.

9 Caddies’ Oak

10 Boniface
Bill Boniface combined the three roles of pro, greenkeeper and publican. His HQ was The Cricketers, the clubhouse from 1911 to 1953
11 All Aboard!
The old railway carriage that was the clubhouse from 1953 to 1969 was sited just about where the 11th tee now stands.
12 Spike
Common name for a workhouse, which was close by in Tichborne Down. Inmates were said to be “spiked” on the system, with no escape. Later a hospital for mentally-handicapped men, it was developed for housing in the late 1980s.

17 Bolton’s Folly
Albert Bolton, a long-forgotten pro/greenkeeper, built a bunker to catch a pulled second shot (and thereafter was its principal visitor). Now gone, the hazard was not far from the big bunker left and short of the modern green.
18 Bombhole
No explanation needed, though, sadly, the pit by the green was not caused by a fleeing Heinkel lightening its load in 1940. Almost certainly, it was dug for chalk to build houses or make into quicklime. There was another “bombhole” just short and right of the 11th green, where the bunker now is, but it was filled in in 1976.

Bentham Golf Course, Lancaster Bentham is an undulating parkland course that offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. A diamond of a golf course set in the Yorkshire Dales in the foothills of the Three Peaks, golf at Bentham dates back to 1922. In 1922 the golf course was founded as a nine hole course and by the early seventies the wooden clubhouse building on the original site was past its best and needed redevelopment - the new clubhouse building was erected in 1975 to meet the needs of the growing golf club membership. It wasn’t later until 2003 when the 9 hole layout at Bentham Golf Course was extended to encompass eighteen fine golf holes falling in line with the other golf courses in the area. The club is now owned and managed by the Marshall family who have been at the helm since 2009. Since this time, the family have made significant investment which has seen many improvements to the clubhouse, teaching facilities and the course itself. Bentham Golf Course now has a bright future ahead of it. Bentham’s course layout has been adapted in the last 10 years to offer a challenge for golfers of all abilities, with more changes to come.
This coupled with majestic views from the fairways over Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside - as well as the inspiring backdrop of the fells of the Lake District – make Bentham a fantastic location for golf. Loudoun Gowf Club Gowfing Since 1909 The uniquely named, Loudoun Gowf Club offer some fantastic green fee rates for visitor as well as some of the most reasonablypriced membership packages in Ayrshire, the home of golf. A ‘gowf field’ is a large arable rural space which is used as home to a gowf hole at one end, which players hit a gutty ball towards from the other end of the field – born from Scottish roots, many gowf fields have become the golf courses of today. Similarities to these golf clubs, saw gowf clubs embrace the culture and traditions of the club and the local area. Loudoun Gowf Club is the last recognised ‘gowf club’ in the world. The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years.
Well worth a visit… The west coast of Scotland celebrates its glorious past with an eye clearly on the future. In 1860, the Open first came to the west coast of Scotland, when it was played at Prestwick. Since this time, the competition has become the greatest golfing event in the world with Ayrshire firmly at its heart.

Home to the largest natural lake in England, Windermere is also home to one of the finest golf courses in the country.
W
indermere Golf Club was founded in 1981 by a group of golf enthusiasts from the Windermere area. The group engaged the help of George Lowe, the professional at Lytham and St Annes Golf Club. Lowe was confident of laying out an admirable ninehole course over an area known as Cleaberrow Fells, near Bowness-on-Windermere and, after a successful eighteen months, the course was extended to an 18-hole golf course.
The welcome at Windermere Golf Club matches the wonderful golf course and spectacular landscape – visitors will not be disappointed.
At the turn of the century, due to periods of prolonged rainfall and constant use, all eighteen greens were rebuilt to USGA standards. Today, the par 67 Windermere course measures 5,122 yards from the championship tees and represents an enjoyable yet stern challenge for even the most accomplished of golfers. Set in picturesque, natural terrain, the golf course combines narrow fairways and rocky outcrops with natural hazards, heather and bracken to create a real golfing gem.
On a clear day, visitors can enjoy views of Morecambe Bay in the south, Coniston Old Man in the west, the Langdales and Fairfield Horseshoe in the north and the Pennines in the east. Overlooking the 17th hole, the beautifully-appointed clubhouse at Windermere is set on the hillside and features a friendly, well stocked bar. All catering needs are met for both members and visitors alike through a mouth-watering array of freshly prepared snacks and imaginative dishes featured on a full and varied daily menu.

ENVILLE GOLF CLUB
Enville Golf Club near Stourbridge in the County of South Staffordshire is an R & A and England Golf Championship venue and recently hosted the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championships 2019. Tucked away near the village of Enville, the first nine holes and clubhouse of Enville Golf Club were erected in 1935 with a second nine added and the course extended to eighteen holes in 1938. Two further loops of nine were added and, in 1983 the 36 holes were re-laid out to create two eighteen hole golf courses. Today, the two golf courses, which are set in pleasant, undulating country; partly heath and partly woodland attract a tremendous amount of visitors each year many of whom return.
Both courses, the par 72 Highgate course, and the Lodge a par 71 golf course are maintained to the highest of standards and boast 36 uniquely contrasting holes. Presenting a test for even the most accomplished of golfer in idyllic conditions for golf, the typical English heathland golf course offers play all-year-round thanks to excellent drainage. Enville Golf Club is also home to first class practice facilities including a 360 yard driving range and three short game areas.
Tranquil surroundings in the West Midlands
The Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to sample The Highgate course for themselves. A real gem of a golf course, the Highgate is a blend of picturesque heathland and woodland course; the tees are extremely well cared for, fairways are shaped to perfection and can be fairly linksy in places allowing for good run and the putting surfaces have gained a reputation for being among the best in the area, fast and smooth with subtle contours.
A lot of the holes are tree-lined, and with the run many players will reach position using a fairway wood on a good proportion of the holes. There are four par five's on the Highgate with the ninth hole, a monster of a hole at 586 yards off the yellow tees. The course also features four wonderfullydesigned par three's and a couple of exciting par fours back to back on the 12th and 13th. The Highgate back nine is arguably more difficult that the front nine which prepares players for the challenge ahead.
Both golf courses, the Highgate and Lodge call for excellent course management and accuracy from the tees to shoot a low score. The Enville clubhouse and spike bar facilities are available seven days a week. Offering a wide range of local ales and beers, as well as the locally brewed and award-winning, Enville Ale the clubhouse is the ideal place to relax and unwind pre or post round. The club provides excellent dining options with bar snacks and meals from the clubhouse’s specials board daily whilst guests are served by an attentive staff team.
In the winter, the club’s log burning stove creates a warm and cosy ambience in the clubhouse building whilst, during the summer months, the patio area is the perfect place for al fresco eating and drinking. Enville Golf Club welcomes visitors and society groups throughout the year. The club’s professional team can tailor their golf day packages to suit the needs of the visiting party. With ease of access from all parts of the UK and boasting some of the country’s finest inland golf courses, The Heart of Wales is an absolute must for all golf enthusiasts. A million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life lies three remarkable golf courses. The first of these is Llandrindod Wells Golf Club, which was designed in 1908 by golfing legend Harry Vardon. This stunning moorland course is a joy to play with superb greens and fairways where the ball “sits up” invitingly almost guaranteeing a great shot to the next hole. Llandrindod Wells is a real “must play” golf course. The second course is Builth Wells Golf Club, an 18 hole parkland course which was established in 1926 as a 9 hole course and expanded in 1987 to its current 18 holes.
The course is really a tale of two halves with the front nine being a more traditional parkland layout whilst the back nine is full of guile and hazards to defeat the unwary golfer. A superb “club golfer’s” course which will encourage you to come back again and again. The final course of the three is Cradoc Golf Club. Situated just outside the market town of Brecon, Cradoc is a traditional parkland course laid out some 40 years ago by veteran Scottish designer C K Cotton around Penoyre Mansion. The course offers unrivalled views of the Brecon Beacons National Park, is one of the most popular parkland courses in Wales and is always a joy to play.
Whilst these three courses are set within a 20 mile area, they are all very different in character and offer the visiting golfer three very different challenges making a golf break to the Heart of Wales one that you will remember for a very long time.
