As I write we are currently just over a week away from the start of the 150th Open Tournament which has returned once again to St Andrews. With a record number of nearly 300,000 people attending this year, breaking the previous record in 2000 when Tiger Woods lifted the famous claret jug, this is surely news that the popularity of our game is soaring to an even greater reach following the pandemic.
In other news from this edition, it seems that BIGGA (The British And International Golf Greenkeepers Association) is launching an industry wide survey to quantify information relating to a perceived "crisis" within the greenkeeping sector (see page 6). The team at the famous Bentham Golf Course are celebrating their centenary this year (see pages 4-5), whilst the Manor House GC have invested in fifty state of the art golf buggies (see pages 8-9).

Around 1941, the two rented fields were purchased by the club and immediately commandeered by the government to aid the war effort. Half was ploughed up and much needed vegetable crops were planted.
The team at Bentham Golf Course, the picturesque club with panoramic views of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lakeland hills, is marking 2022 as a milestone year, as it reaches its centenary.
The game of golf first came into play in the Bentham area, when a group of local gentlemen played 5 holes at Park Foot between Bentham and Ingleton in 1922. These pioneers moved their game to its present site at Bentham Moor later that same year and Bentham Golf Club was established.
In 1925, that same band of sporting gentlemen, together with a number of other men and some of the fairer sex, purchased £1 shares and created Bentham Golf Club Limited. The greater part of the land was purchased outright, with only the field for the first and ninth holes being rented. A green-keeper was employed, who doubled as a club maker and who would nowadays be classed as the ‘professional’. Under his guidance the course was constructed by the members, who also built a wooden clubhouse that sported an elegant veranda, plus changing and locker rooms.
The clubhouse was moved further onto the course and doubled as an observer post for aircraft recognition. Rumour has it that a club member who served in the Royal Observer Corp spent most of his duty time practising his chipping and putting on the 8th green whilst keeping an eye on passing aircraft.
After the conflict was over, the ploughed land was brought back into play and the clubhouse returned to its original position, the members again helping with the construction of the greens and tees.
The club and course went from strength to strength. Around 1960, an old Army hut was purchased and attached to the clubhouse, forming a social room, kitchen and a much needed nineteenth hole – all once again made possible by the hard work of the members.
With social amenities available, membership increased and many events were organised, with catering provided by the ladies.
By the early seventies the ageing wooden clubhouse was felt to be inadequate to cope with the increasing number of members. Other factors, such as the highway authorities plans for a relief road through the middle of the dance floor, meant the Directors needed to find an alternative site! A new clubhouse was sited in its present position and was up and ready for business in the spring of 1975.
Membership continued to grow and golfing flourished at Bentham. More machinery was purchased, a full time green-keeper took over from the stalwart part-timers and over the years the greens developed into some of the finest in the north of England. Alterations were made to the course, new greens constructed, tees pushed back to lengthen holes, trees planted and minor adjustments to the cosmetics of the course completed.
In the mid 1990’s it became obvious that to stay as a nine-hole golf course would mean the demise of the club. Members were leaving to join 18-hole courses and although the club enjoyed a very strong junior section it was agreed the club must attract many more new members and visitors to survive. Eventually the directors, endorsed by the members, were able to purchase neighbouring farmland and Bentham become an 18-hole course.
Bentham Golf Course has been under the nurturing ownership of the Marshall family since 2009. They have invested heavily in the course, constantly improving the facilities and championing golf to attract visitors and encourage newcomers to the game.
In recent years, they have built luxurious lodges and glamping pods discreetly amid the fairways, offering the opportunity for visitors to ‘stay and play’, or even purchase their own golfer’s dream holiday home.
They have also created a driving range and revitalised the clubhouse as The 1922 Bar & Kitchen, open to non-golfers.
As part of the 100 year celebrations, an extra Open competition has been added to the fixtures for visiting golfers this year. Sunday 7th August is the date for the event, which will be held as a fundraiser for prostate cancer. Teams of four, with any gents/ladies combination are invited to play, and the winners prize is a 4 ball voucher to play Royal Birkdale.

The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has launched an industry-wide survey that will quantify information relating to a perceived ‘crisis’ within the greenkeeping and wider golfing sector.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that golf clubs are struggling to fill available vacancies, particularly in the greenkeeping department. Reasons generally put forward for this include the requirement to work anti-social hours, lack of appreciation and a relatively low entry salary. However, for those who do embark upon a career in greenkeeping, the positives are many.
This survey is crucial as it is vital the scale of the challenge is quantified, as well as the key drivers for the issues. Effective golf club staff are critical to the health and growth of the sport as they strongly influence the experience of golfers on a day-to-day basis.
As BIGGA seeks to fulfil its overarching ambition of creating a more positive working environment for the UK’s greenkeepers, BIGGA hopes the hard data from the survey will enable the association to positively guide the broader golf industry.

It is vital the golf industry – utilising real data – considers positive solutions to the ongoing labour issues.

May 2022, Rock, Cornwall, England: The newlyrefurbished balcony at the clubhouse at St Enodoc Golf Club in north Cornwall offers members and visitors alike a stunning panoramic view across the championship course and the Camel Estuary which must be one of the most breathtaking vistas in golf.
Following a recent consultation within the club, the renovation of the balcony overlooking the 18th green and beyond was at the top of the list of requirements from the members.
The improvements that have been made were achieved by removing the old steel railings and replacing them with plate glass panels whilst the old concrete tiles were removed and instead more ecofriendly wooden decking was installed alongside a range of new outdoor furniture to give the space a more modern and fresh feel.

The balcony now has several wooden tables and chairs for eating and drinking as well as a number of more casual lounge furniture with comfortable cushions to create a more relaxed seating area from which to enjoy the view. Pot plants and cosy blankets for the cooler times of the year complete the new look.
St Enodoc employed two local companies, Camel Glass & Joinery and Pure Vista, overseen by building contractor, Tom Mills, to ensure the member’s requirement became a reality.
“The members are delighted with the new balcony and regard it as a great improvement,” says Simon Greatorex, General Manager at the club. “They are particularly looking forward to using it in the summer months and we’re confident that it will also attract many of our visitors to stay on after their round for some refreshments whilst soaking up the mesmerizing view.”
At the same time, the club has doubled the size of the reception area to house a dedicated team of receptionists that is now in place to help the club deal with its 2,000 members and their guests as well as the raft of visitors that flock to the Church and Holywell Courses throughout the year, particularly in the busy summer season.
St Enodoc Golf Club is home to one of England’s finest links courses that was designed by James Braid back in 1890 whilst its other course, the Holywell, which also boasts a number of Braid holes, has established itself as an ideal layout for a more gentle and speedy round of golf.

The Manor House Golf Club, Wiltshire, has purchased a fleet of 50 golf buggies from leading manufacturer, Club Car.
The lithium battery cars each include full Visage GPS touch screens, designed to further enhance golfers’ experiences on the course. The heightened GPS systems on the new fleet provide golfers with more accurate distance measuring and location services.
The state-of-the-art buggies feature additional environmentally friendly benefits, including being lighter in weight than older, lead acid battery buggies. Each charge of the battery lasts approximately 12 hours, enabling golfers to complete 36 holes without a loss of power.
Requiring less charges and therefore less power consumption, these lithium operated buggies are also due to soon be charged using the power from the sun. The club will be fitting solar panels onto the roof of the buggy store, further enhancing The Manor House’s ambitions to create a more sustainable golf club.
Andrew Ryan, Golf Club Manager at The Manor House Golf Club, said: “This fleet of buggies has been a great investment for our club. We are always looking for ways to boost golfers experience here and become more sustainable. These buggies enable us to improve all of that.”
In true British golf club fashion, the new fleet of buggies also come with rain covers for all golf bags – to help keep members and guests playing in all weather. This is particularly useful for The Manor House golfers, as the course benefits from exceptional drainage conditions and tarmac buggy paths, which keeps golfers playing in all weather conditions, year-round.
In addition, all buggies have also been kitted out with dual USB charging ports, to keep golfers connected during their round. This is expected to prove popular with corporate members of the club in particular, who benefit from members-only tee times as well as use of the club’s meeting facilities.
Future plans for the new buggies include allowing golfers to order food from the clubhouse while out on a round. The Manor House golf team plan to offer a limited choice of menu items that can be ordered using the touch screens when on the 8th hole. Golfers can then collect their order from the club’s Airstream half-way house.
Andrew Ryan added: “We are excited to offer golfers more choice when it comes to ‘on course’ refreshments during their round. We are trialling this now and aim to launch the service fully in the early summer months.”

The 150th Open at St Andrews is set to be a historic event with record crowds witnessing the world’s greatest players contest the Claret Jug and a team of almost 50 greenkeepers from golf clubs all over the United Kingdom and further afield will be supporting the home greenkeeping team as they prepare the Old Course’s famous fairways.
Each year The R&A requests the assistance of British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) members in the staging of the event. Every full BIGGA member who has been with the association for at least two years is eligible to apply for a place on the Volunteer Open Support Team and those who are selected are given incredible access to golf’s greatest championship, supporting every match with bunker raking duties.
The history of the Volunteer Open Support Team began at St Andrews in 1984 following years of complaints from golfers and the governing body that bunker raking at The Open was inconsistent. Walter Woods BEM, links superintendent at St Andrews at the time, proposed that members of the Scottish & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (SIGGA), which existed prior to the formation of BIGGA in 1987, could be enlisted on a volunteer basis. Having a deputised band of trained greenkeepers on site would also provide the home greenkeeping team with additional support, should the need arise. The Volunteer Open Support Team was formed and has attended every Open since, providing hundreds of BIGGA members with incredible memories and inspiring them to achieve greater things both in their careers and at their home facilities.
Joining the BIGGA volunteers will be Gordon Moir, BIGGA President 2022, himself a former links superintendent at St Andrews and an industry veteran who supervised the hosting of five Opens. Gordon will begin his presidency at the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) 2022, taking place from 22 to 24 March at the Harrogate Convention Centre.
BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “The 150th Open will be a spectacular celebration of the sport of golf and in some ways the Volunteer Open Support Team recognises the vital role greenkeepers have played over the centuries in the development and prospering of this wonderful game, so we are thankful to The R&A for providing this opportunity for BIGGA members each year. The Open is the world’s greatest golf tournament and this is set to be the biggest and best instalment ever, so everyone at BIGGA – including those members who form the home St Andrews greenkeeping team –is looking forward to playing our part in the hosting of the championship.”
This year’s BIGGA Volunteer Open Support Team features a record number of first-time team members and each year is provided with accommodation, subsistence and uniform for the event. Restrictions may be in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and any necessary adjustments to working practices will be made clear to BIGGA members ahead of the championship.
The 150th Open takes place from 10 to 17 July 2022. Applications for the BIGGA Volunteer Open Support Team for The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool will open later this year.

HADDENHAM, UK - - If proof were ever needed that SkyCaddie’s accurate GPS data gives competitive golfers a clear performance advantage, it came at this weekend’s Legends Tour event at Trevose.
During the 2022 Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship hosted by Ian Woosnam, 80% of the top 20 finishers used a SkyCaddie GPS device during play, and almost 69% of the total final day field used a SkyCaddie GPS for their yardages.

In a far corner of the British Isles and within easy reach of the continent lies England’s own garden county, a verdant expanse of orchards, farmland and natural, undulating countryside, bordered by towering white cliffs that can be seen from across The Channel.
Welcome to Kent – and what better location could there be for such a variety of golf courses incorporating parkland, woodland and heathland layouts and the magnificent coastal links that regularly host the most famous of all tournaments, the Open Championship.
At the heart of the county lies Canterbury, a city steeped in history with its majestic cathedral that was originally founded in the sixth century but was completely rebuilt in 1070. One hundred years later, it became the scene for the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket.
South East England Golf Club of the Year 2022
Adding to the attraction of the city, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, is the Canterbury Golf Club, whose course was designed by renowned golf course architect Harry Colt and was opened in 1927.
The golf club has grown significantly in stature and reputation after massive investment in recent years and has become a favoured venue for visiting golfers from throughout the UK and, indeed, the world.
Among Canterbury’s many fans is Adam Lawrence, editor of international publication Golf Course Architecture, who says “sitting on some great ground, and with a typically brilliant Colt design, Canterbury Golf Club in southern England is a true hidden gem”.
The course was laid out on land which was previously a training ground for the neighbouring Howe Barracks and was predominantly coloured by gorse and broom. However, over the years, large expanses of trees have appeared, some introduced by the vagaries of nature and others as part of a planned planting programme. Consequently, the course has changed in character from heathland to a wonderful parkland setting.
Much of the Colt designed course remains as the great man originally laid it out and on some of the holes the outlines of several training trenches, dug by troops in preparation for the Great War, are still to be made out.
The club has undertaken many improvements since purchasing the freehold of the course in 2014 from the Ministry of Defence, who previously owned the land the course was built on. This investment has exceeded £1million and the long-term plans for the club include further considerable expenditure. The improvements to the layout focus mainly around reinstating several original Colt features that were lost during and immediately after the Second World War.
Boasting some of the best greens in the county, the course has become a favourite stopover for golfers travelling to and from the high profile links courses situated on the Kent coast but has recently become more of a destination in its own right.
It is for these reasons that our editorial staff have made Canterbury Golf Club the South East England Golf Club Of The Year for 2022.

Founded in 1955, the Glasgow Golf Union is tasked with the development of golf in the Glasgow area as well as providing assistance to its member clubs helping them to maintain and develop their membership.

Glasgow Golf Union is fundamental in the liaison between Scottish Golf and its member clubs – a vitally important role with the introduction of the World Handicapping System in November 2020.

In 1976, Seahouses’ original 9-hole layout was extended to the eighteen holes that can be enjoyed today and, since this time, the golf club has hosted many Northumberland Golf County events.
Today, the par 67 golf course measures 5608 yards and although on the short side in this day and age it poses a unique and memorable challenge from the championship white tees with magnificent views of the Northumbrian Coastline.

Set in 86 acres of beautiful parkland, just two miles from the centre of Oxford; Oxford Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in England and, whilst retaining its traditional roots, the club meets the needs of the 21st Century golfer.
Oxford Golf Club dates back as far as 1873 when golf was first played at the site. Founded in 1892, Mid Herts Golf Club is one of the country’s remaining original golf courses. The Club’s heathland setting, warm welcome and modern facilities have made it a well-loved golf course for members and visitors alike.
Mid Herts is a beautiful heathland course and a haven for wildlife. Over ninety bird boxes have been installed over the years with red kites, great spotted woodpeckers, tawny owls and and nuthatch are regularly seen, as well as bats.
Under the guidance of renowned golf course architect, James Braid, Mid Herts was extended to 18-holes in 1923. Laid out across one of Hertfordshire’s few remaining lowland heathlands and acid grasslands, the varied golf course offers a dynamic and challenging round with natural undulations, hazards and greens that run true and quick with intriguing breaks.
Since our 100th anniversary in 1992 there has been considerable investment in all aspect of our course, with the clubhouse extensively redeveloped and refurbished in 2000. In recent times the clubhouse bar and dining area has been completely refurbished together with the locker rooms and we have moved away from having a traditional Pro Shop. We now have ‘The Hub’ model which is widely used on the Continent and in the United States and also have a fully functioning halfway house as well as a new young vibrant catering team. You can rest assured that you will be spoilt for choice with your menu selection and all dietary requirements can be accommodated.
The Club is planning to become largely selfsufficient with electricity already coming from solar panels and in 2020 we installed our own borehole for water to be supplied to the course

Welwyn Garden City Golf Club was founded in 1923 when a group of residents were responsible for the formulation of the golf club. The beautifully manicured golf course with superb clubhouse facilities which exists today was a dream when plans for Ingestre Park were first put in place in 1969. The existing site was suggested as a possible venue for the golf course and work began on the development of the 18-hole golf course which was designed by Mr Jiggins of Hawtree & Co.
The site officially became Ingestre Park Golf Club on 1st January 1978 with the official opening of the clubhouse taking place in February of the same year.
Today the comfortable, air-conditioned clubhouse offers a well-stocked bar and an excellent menu.

Situated on the Berkshire/Hampshire border, Calcot Park Golf Club is a historic and traditional members' golf club. Designed by the legendary Harry Colt and opened in 1930, it represents the perfect location for society golf.
The club sits within an exclusive private estate, its parkland setting enhancing the ambience of the course itself. Eyes are often attracted to the wildlife when playing the course whilst the changing seasons are complemented by the colours of the trees which abound.
Calcot Park is an undulating, traditional, parkland course rated in the top six golf clubs in Berkshire and is recognised as one of the best in the area. Designer Harry Colt also built, amongst others, Beaconsfield, Denham, Stoke Park, Sunningdale Old, Swinley Forest along with the East and West courses at Wentworth Club in Surrey.
The 18-hole course, Par 70 and SSS 71, is 6,300 yards off the White Tees and is acknowledged as a demanding, yet fair test of golf.
There are two par-5s, both reachable in two by strong hitters and four excellent par-3s, including the 7th, the signature hole, played across a lake to an elevated green. The 13th is played across a stream in a shallow valley to a contoured green.
The course opens and closes with two, long par4s. There are three small practice areas, practice nets and two practice chipping and putting greens. Calcot Park has an abundance of mature trees and shrubs and the area surrounding the course are home to a variety of wildlife including badgers, foxes and deer.
In particular, golf societies and companies are most welcome to take advantage of the fine course and
facilities, with a number of packages available to suit all tastes and budgets. The superb, fully licensed restaurant will further complement a round of golf.

It’s often quite difficult to concentrate on your golf at Kirkbymoorside such is the spectacular scenery. But concentrate you must because this challenging golf course set on the edge of the North York Moors National Park is no pushover.
At just over 6,200 off the back tees eight par fours over 400 yards - there’s just one par five - and a sprinkling of tantalising par threes, it’s an excellent, enjoyable test.
But those views are something else - especially over the moors from the 13th tee - and you will see the Yorkshire Wolds and The Hambleton Hills at their best.
Interestingly, the course starts with a short par three of 138 yards (don’t go long with the tee shot) and there are three short holes in the first six, but there are also a couple of big par fours and one of these short holes ain’t so short!
Still, if you’re putting’s sound and you’re accurate, you should start with a comfortable par but the second presents an immediate risk and reward with the option of cutting the dangerous corner at this 422 yard par four.
Then it’s a long par three of 193 yards over water to a narrow green and you’re beginning to think “this is not easy.”
Keep left at the next par four which is a birdie chance and you’ll need a really good drive to get anything out of the 437 yard fifth, the small well-bunkered green at the 160-yard sixth will also pose problems. Not surprisingly, the 442-yard seventh is stroke index two and it is a cracking par four. It’s a tough right to left tee shot and unless you’re accurate, it may not be a driver for you.
What’s good about Kirkbymoorside is that there is almost always a chance offered to repair any damage, the seventh is followed by a drivable par four of 271 yards, a definite birdie chance.
The ninth is also a chance to let rip with a wide fairway which you need to as it’s 445 yards and needs two good hits to get near.
The 355-yard 10th is a complete contrast with an increasingly narrow fairway and it may well be a hybrid or long iron off the tee as the hole gets tighter the closer you get to the green. The toughest tee shot on the golf course comes at 11, a 444-yard par four with out of bounds left and bushes right. No surprise again that this is stroke one.
Again it’s followed by a risk and reward hole with the 265 yard par four where you can risk the corner to set up a birdie or lay up and play safe.The 415yard 13th has those terrific views from the tee, but concentrate as the drive has to be straight and long on a tree-line fairway to get within range of the green.
The solitary par five follows and at 515 yards would seem straightforward. It is if you play sensibly up short of the road and then over the marker on the top of the hill to leave a short iron to a green sloping left to right.
Best to leave the putt below the hole on the severely sloping green at the 179-yard 15th and the 16th is the start of an excellent finish where you need to decide whether to leave the tee shot on the top of the hill to give a good view on your approach or finish at the bottom of the hill.
The 426-yard 17th demands a good drive left - but not too far left as there’s trouble there - to be able to get at the green and the 18th may be just 321 yards, but it’s tricky with a green that slopes front to back.

The 11th and 12th holes are considered to be two of the best Par 4’s in the county.
Members and visitors must wonder from time to time why the holes at Alresford are so called. Some names, of course, are pretty obvious but most do require an explanation.

Nearest hole to Tichborne – we are in the parish, after all – and a nod to the family who came over with the Conqueror and owned the land around for nine centuries. They sold us 85 acres in 1969 and leased another 20 to allow us to “go 18” in 1993.
Twice a Captain of AGC and a veterinary surgeon in the town. Geoff Searles virtually saved the club from extinction in the lean years after WWII.
Residents of and visitors to Tichborne House played cricket on this broad, flat expanse. (The hoi polloi also had their own pitch, further north on the ground now taken by the by-pass).
4 Don’t Dally!
Especially when the wind is from the south. (The name Pooh Corner was also considered for this one but rejected on the grounds of taste).
The track that skirts the eastern boundary of the course is known as Appledown Lane. It eventually meets Cheriton Lane near the battlefield site.
A mark of respect and affection for the family who farmed this field and provided many Captains, champions and club officers over half a century.
The entire left side of this long hole is bounded by Hassock’s Copse, though it is actually a 40-acre wood.
No explanation required – but it could just as easily have been called “Water Jump,” for that depression in the fairway 150 yards from the tee dates to when this was the town’s racecourse. It was much deeper then.

Common name for a workhouse, which was close by in Tichborne Down. Inmates were said to be “spiked” on the system, with no escape. Later a hospital for mentally-handicapped men, it was developed for housing in the late 1980s.

Local name for The Cricketers, which was formerly in The Links, on the corner of Sun Lane and Tichborne Down. This was the clubhouse from 1890, when AGC was founded. until 1910.

The Grand National winner of 1893 was trained over these fields and stabled at Bishop’s Sutton.

Tribute to 1992 English Golf Union President, David Harrison. who lived in The Links for many years and was wont to walk this hole of an evening accompanied by a big, boisterous black Lab called “Seve.”
Albert Bolton, a long-forgotten pro/greenkeeper, built a bunker to catch a pulled second shot (and thereafter was its principal visitor). Now gone, the hazard was not far from the big bunker left and short of the modern green.
No explanation needed, though, sadly, the pit by the green was not caused by a fleeing Heinkel lightening its load in 1940. Almost certainly, it was dug for chalk to build houses or make into quicklime. There was another “bombhole” just short and right of the 11th green, where the bunker now is, but it was filled in in 1976.

A diamond of a golf course set in the Yorkshire Dales in the foothills of the Three Peaks, golf at Bentham dates back to 1922.
In 1925 the golf course was founded as a nine hole course and by the early seventies the wooden clubhouse building on the original site was past its best and needed redevelopment - the new clubhouse building was erected in 1975 to meet the needs of the growing golf club membership.
It wasn’t later until the mid-90s, when the nine-hole layout at Bentham Golf Course was extended to encompass eighteen fine golf holes falling in line with the other golf courses in the area.
The club is not owned and managed by the Marshall family who have been at the helm since 2009. Since this time, the family have made significant investment which has seen many improvements to the clubhouse, teaching facilities and the course itself. Bentham Course now has a bright future ahead of it.

Located just fifteen minutes from the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotscraig is the world’s 13th oldest golf club. Founded in 1817 by members of the St Andrews Society of Golfers, the course at Scotscraig was designed under the guidance of world renowned golf course architects, Tom Morris and James Braid.
Redesigned by Braid later in 1923, the course retains most of its original characteristics synonymous with Braid-designed golf courses; rolling greens and well-positioned bunkers.

Golf was first played over six holes at Boat of Garten Golf Club in 1898. Since this time, the golf course has been extensively redesigned by legendary golf course architect, James Braid; who extended the course in 1930 to the eighteen holes that can be enjoyed today.
‘The Boat’ is set alongside the River Spey in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, ten minutes from the village of Aviemore. The course represents a demanding test of golfing skill but is also a magnificent setting for the game comprising eighteen completely unique golf holes offering their own individual golfing challenges.
The shaped fairways, heather and broom of The Boat make it a scenic experience whilst maximising the natural landscape and beautiful countryside that surrounds it.

Recognised as the 15th oldest golf club in the world, golf was first played in the Fortrose area as far back as 1702 and golf on the land that Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club is now set can be tracked back to the formulation of the Fortrose Golf Society which was founded in July 1793.
By the end of 1888 the golf club had a membership of 50 members. Although the first competitions were not held at Fortrose & Rosemarkie in 1922 following the resurgence of the game.
In 1932, world renowned golf course architect, James Braid was invited to advise on a new course layout with further land being acquired. Over the next two years, more land was purchased which led to Braid being invited to carry out a further survey on the land and its use as an eighteen hole golf course.
In the mid-1950s, the Club had outgrown its facilities and the new clubhouse was planned. This clubhouse was further extended in 1983 to the building that can be enjoyed by members and visitors today.

The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course.

Vardon used the natural landscape to create a unique golf course that is a challenge to every golfer whatever their handicap. If you find playing bunker shots a bit of a trial then this is one golf course you will love as there are no sand bunkers anywhere on the course.
A stunning parkland golf course designed 40 years ago by veteran Scottish designer C K Cotton in the grounds of Penoyre House and with indescribable views over the Brecon Beacons.
