Winter 2019
Welcome to the Winter 2019 Issue of Your Golfer Magazine 2019 can be remembered fondly for many connected and embroiled in the world of golf. However, two particular stories clearly stand out!! Firstly there was Tiger Woods. Tigers return to the professional game was something of a surprise to many. After falling so far down the rankings, many thought that one of the greatest players to ever grace the sports time had passed. However, what a reminder he gave us of the old Tiger by coming from two shots behind on the final day to win the 2019 Masters Title. There is also the faiytale story of Suzann Pettersen. After two years pretty much out of the professional limelight, Suzann was a captains choice to represent Europe the the 2019 Solheim Cup Team. After three days where the scores were so close that it all came down to the last putt. A six footer is all that stood between Europe and the title. Suzann duly set up and sunk the putt to light the touch paper on one of the most outstanding celebrations ever witnessed in Womens golf. Retirement beckoned and who could blame her. It does not get much better than that!! With the year now coming to an end, we would like to remind our readers that having one eye on organising your next society or away day is ever important. Within this issue you will find a supplement that our course reviewers have put together based on some of their favourite courses of 2019, as well as the usual profiles of some of the best and most cost eective golf courses in Britain. We hope (as always) that you enjoy the cotents of this edition and wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

There are different scenarios and penalties for players that hit the incorrect ball during their round of golf. These are outlined by the R & A:
Match Play
If a player makes a stroke at the wrong ball, he loses the hole. If the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If the player and opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole; when this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.
Stroke Play
If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two shots. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.
Mark your ball!
A company which was formed with golfers in mind, stampyourballs.com was founded by Inventor and Managing Director, Paul Green who once made the fatal golfing error of playing the wrong ball. Following the mishap, Paul set about developing a product that eliminates the risk.

Bramshaw Juniors crowned National Champions. Bramshaw Golf Club, New Forest, 23 October 2019 – After winning the Hampshire Junior League to qualify for the knock-out rounds of the Home Nations Championship, the Bramshaw Junior Team, played in Regional Final and Semi-final tournaments to earn a place in the National Final, which took place on Sunday 20th October at Mannings Heath Golf Club, Sussex. Competing with Bramshaw were Thirsk & North Allerton, Hexham, Huddersfield, Windlesham and Wrag Barn. Notably, this is the second time in 3 years that Bramshaw have triumphed and been crowned England Champions. They now head off to Morgado, Portugal in February 2020, to represent England in the Home Nations Championships.
With Joe Buenfeld shooting a 1-under par 71 (equal best score of the day), backed up by his team-mates who all scored around their handicaps the Bramshaw team were the most consistent performers on the day.
With the practice-round the day before, the recent heavy rain meant that the course was playing its full length, but with good quality greens, this was going to be a challenging, but enjoyable test of golf.
When the results were announced the Bramshaw Juniors had beaten Windlesham into runners-up spot by a margin of 4 shots. Nev James, Junior Organiser, Bramshaw said “This squad have now been together for a few years and they are impressive young golfers.
The morning of the tournament arrived, with a little mist over the course, but good prospects for the weather during the day. After Sky TV filmed and interviewed a selection of players, play eventually got underway just after 10am, with Bramshaw’s Joe Buenfeld having the pleasure of the first shot of the National Final. With 36 players teeing off the next 5 hours or so proved just how difficult the course was due to the soft fairways and with fallen leaves also making life challenging for players and ball-spotters alike. Sky TV were filming the players on the 5th, 10th and 18th holes and after the last group putted out on the final hole, it was back to the Clubhouse before the post-match dinner and presentation/announcement of results.
I am very proud of the way they played, their etiquette and their ability to cope in pressure situations. Every player gave a very solid golf performance and they are a genuine team, working with and supporting each other superbly”.

EXPLORE THE 'ACE' RANGE
Tees Squared is golf's newest and only athleisure wear brand. We design modern, informal and athletic golf wear for use throughout everyday life. Our aim is to bring a fresh look to golf clothes, with our simple and stylish designs. The idea for Tees Squared came from being fed up of the golf apparel industry and how it worked. The idea originally came at the start of 2019. When looking online for golf clothes for the upcoming year I noticed that the only places to go to get these clothes were big golf retailers like American Golf or online retailers who sold other brands and had no say in the design of the clothes. The retailers who had a brick and mortar presence focused far more on that than their online store and gave a poor online shopping experience. And whatever clothes they had were both overly expensive for what you got and very formalized, all the t-shirts available were the same polo neck design that has been worn by golfers for decades. I was also looking for clothes that I could wear on a day I wasn’t golfing, or something that would be suitable for 9 holes and for meeting friends after. I thought of the recent trends in the gym wear industry. Big brands like Nike, Under Armour and Adidas are being cast aside as new brands like Gymshark and Alphalete emerge. These new brands focus on athleisure wear, gym clothes that can be worn anywhere as athletic wear and as regular leisure wear. And the clothes these new brands are producing is very stylish and modern. I thought that something similar should exist in the golf wear space. So, after spending ages looking for a brand supplying stylish and modern golf clothes that could double up as leisure wear I became frustrated and gave up. This is where the opportunity came. I thought someone should be doing this in golf, but no one was. So, I would do it.
I set about designing these clothes that seemed to only exist in my head. What I came up with is now for sale with Tees Squared. These are the ‘Ace’ and ‘Arc’ range of t-shirts that Tees Squared is now selling. In 2020 we are looking to add more t-shirts, tops, shorts and pants as well as women’s clothes to the brand. Going forward we are aiming to become the Gymshark of golf wear. We want to revolutionize the expensive and outdated golf wear industry to make it more youthful, exciting, fashionable and affordable. We aim to do this by creating only the best and most fashionable sportswear for Tees Squared along with providing an unrivalled customer experience. We aim to change the perception of fashion within golf and we aim to change the buying experience. With the demise of the retail brick and mortar store in other fashion sectors and the rise of the online shopping experience, its time golf caught up and we aim to be the company to make that change happen.

Gabrielle Macdonald
Born in Edinburgh in 1993, Gabrielle Macdonald is one of Scotland’s rising golfing stars. Having started playing golf at the age of ten, Gabrielle joined Prestonfield Golf Club aged 11 and, three years later, won the Ladies Club Championship aged just 14. After playing in the under 16 Strokeplay Championships at Craigielaw, Gabrielle joined the golf club and quickly became a valuable member of the club’s successful junior team. Winning the Scottish Junior Team Champions, the Craigielaw team also qualified for the British Finals in La Manga, Spain. Gabrielle Macdonald has been a member of Craigielaw Golf Club for over ten years and is delighted to now be representing the club as a professional. Located only 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh, Craigielaw caters to all the discerning golfer’s needs. The course measures 6,601 yards from the Championship tee and is often referred to as a ‘golfers’ paradise’. Designed by renowned golf course architect, Donald Steel, Craigielaw is relatively new to the East Lothian golfing scene, having opened its fairways in 2001 but has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship. Inspired by the great links golf courses of Britain, the Craigielaw course features challenging greens and cavernous bunkers as well as boasting spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, Gullane Hill and out towards Edinburgh and Fife. The Club’s course is complimented by its short game and practice facilities, driving range and fully stocked professional shop which are second to none. During her membership at Craigielaw, Gabrielle played in her first Scottish Girl’s Amateur Championship where she won the Ansley Reid Salver at Peterhead in 2007. However, the highlight of Gabrielle’s Junior career has to be representing her beloved Scotland in the Girls Home Internationals of 2010.
A platform for success Gabrielle Macdonald studied for a Geography degree at St Andrews. She left University with a 2:1 honours degree and a wealth of experience having lived at the home of golf for four years. Whilst studying at St Andrews, Gabrielle was a key member of the Saints Golf programme there and was also captain of the Ladies team for two years. In 2013, she represented Scotland in the Ladies Home Internationals and, one year later, won the Ladies Close Amateur Championship at Prestwick in 2014. Gabrielle has also represented Scotland at the European Ladies Team Championship in Slovenia as well as the Ladies World Team Championships in Japan. Gabrielle credits her time at St Andrews for helping her golf development as well as the experience gained whilst representing Scotland in elite amateur events.
Gabrielle the Pro At the start of 2019, Gabrielle flew out to South Africa to embark on her first season as a tour playing professional. She played in five events on the Ladies Sunshine Tour and finished 9th on the Tour’s Investec Order of Merit recording two top tens and two top 15 finishes. Since then Gabrielle has been playing on the Ladies European Access Series (LETAS), the feeder tour to the LET. She played a total of 16 events, and made 14 cuts, finishing 26th on the season long Road to La Largue Order of Merit. Gabrielle is hoping to continue her fine season by gaining her full LET card for the 2020 season at Qualifying School.
Supporting the local community On the 21st June 2019, Gabrielle Macdonald held a golf day at her home club of Craigielaw in order to raise funds for her first season as professional. The twenty-one team Texas Scramble was extremely well received by members and local businesses alike. The sun made an appearance and a successful day was had by all. Gabrielle was also delighted to support St Columba’s Hospice and the Edinburgh Maggie’s Centre, two charities close to her heart. Quarterly Magazine | Competitions | News | Reviews | Club Directory
Q & A with Gabrielle Macdonald Q. You have been playing golf since the age of ten, do you feel that golf has become more accessible to female golfers over the last 10 years ? A.When I started playing golf, there was hardly any girls who were members at Prestonfield or Craigielaw and I mostly played with the junior boys. I think there are slightly more girls playing now but there is definitely a need to get more women and girls playing golf. I think a lot of male only golf clubs are now accepting women members and this can only help to make golf more accessible to females. Q.With more lady golfers making headlines in the game of golf, what advice would you give to a promising young female golfer looking to make a career in the sport? A.I think the most important thing for young golfers is to enjoy it and to play as much competitive golf as possible. Q.Since turning professional, what are the main differences between the pro male circuit and the pro female circuit? A.I’ve been playing on the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) which is similar to the mens Challenge Tour. I think the main difference is the prize money as I think the standard of golf and product is really high on both tours. The average purse on the LETAS is around €40,000 whereas the Challenge Tour is around €200,000. Q.What is your most memorable experience as a professional golfer so far? A.Starting my career out in South Africa was amazing, as I had never been there before and it was such a great country to visit. Teeing up in my first event as a pro at Fancourt and George GC was so exciting and this whole year has been a great experience for me.
Raising cash for Coventry foodbank You may recall the article in our Autumn edition regarding the Golf Society at Citizen following their annual golf tournament in September at The Vale Golf & Country Club in Pershore to mark the end of the Golf Society season On 28 November members of the Society presented a cheque for £960 to Coventry Foodbank from money raised on the day through sponsorship and entry fees for the tournament. The cheque was gratefully received at a time when they are facing the busiest month of the year and it will really help them bring a bit of Christmas cheer to those in need in the community they serve.

The Vale
Golf & Country Club www.thevalegolf.co.uk
Q.What impact do you feel that your home club Craigelaw had on your early days as junior? A.Craigielaw has been a great place for my golf to develop. The junior team when I joined was really strong and it was great to be a part of the team’s success in the East Lothian league and we regularly won the national event for the best junior team in Scotland. I think the competitiveness of the team was an ideal environment for me to improve my golf. Q.What expectations do you have for yourself for the forthcoming 2020 golf season? A.I don’t really have any expectations other than to keep working hard and hopefully I can keep improving and the results will follow. Q. What else do you think could be done to encourage more lady golfers ? A.I think more coverage of women’s golf could help to create more interest and participation in the sport. If young girls see more of womens golf on tv it could help to inspire them to play and want to have a career in golf.

Craigielaw Golf Club The perfect setting on Scotland’s Golf Coast.
East Lothian is one of Scotland’s most picturesque counties, with rolling hills, long stretches of coastline and incredibly well draining soils perfect for golf ready grounds all year round. Just 30 minutes from the historic and thriving Scottish capital, courses in this area are easily accessible and perfect for long weekends away. This area is famed for its championship links golf courses, and at the top of the pile is Craigielaw, a club with a well-earned reputation for its quality layout and friendly welcoming atmosphere.
The course is relatively new on the scene; since opening in 2001 it has already hosted national events, including the 2006 Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and was a qualifying course for the 2007 British Seniors Open at Muirfield. With challenging greens, cavernous bunkers and spectacular views over the Firth of Forth, Gullane Hill and out towards Edinburgh and Fife, Craigielaw Golf Club is an experience not to be missed.
The lodge is perfect for romantic getaways, golfing weekends and society tours. They even have facilities for outdoor BBQ parties, perfect for those long summer nights. The club boasts a short game and practise green, a driving range and a fully stocked pro shop, ensuring when you step up to tee-off you are fully equipped and warmed up.
The facilities at Craigielaw are at the same high standards as the course itself. The clubhouse has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, serving the best of local and seasonal produce complete with stunning views of the course. Craigielaw also has the added bonus of its own accommodation; 25 rooms allowing you to enjoy an immersive golfing experience, and the best of Scottish hospitality.
East Lothian is the place to be for up and coming championship standard golf, and Craigielaw should be top of the list for any traveling golf societies. With impeccably maintained courses, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere, its no wonder that visitors keep coming back again and again to enjoy this unique, and charismatic links course.
Whist Edinburgh is famed for its festivals, castle and shopping, there are a range of local attractions ideal for the quintessentially Scottish experience. Just over 20 minutes from the course lies the world famous Glenkinchie Distillery, offering world class tasting experiences; although we recommend if you’re looking to take some strokes off your handicap that you partake after you’ve played the course! Craigielaw is regularly referred to as a golfers' paradise. The 6601 yard championship course was designed by Donald Steel whose architectural expertise stretches across every open golf championship course. The course shares much of the charisma of the nearby and world-renowned courses Muirfield, North Berwick and Gullane. In fact, there are 22 other outstanding courses in the area making East Lothian ideal for touring golf societies who want maximise time on the course and minimise travel.

Students tee-up strategy to help drive business for golf clubs across the North New research carried out by business students at Northumbria University is set to help struggling golf clubs across the North of England to futureproof their operations and drive revenue. Keen to grow golf tourism in the area and tackle the financial challenges facing local clubs, the Northern branch of the Golf Club Managers Association (GCMA), approached the Business Clinic at Northumbria University for help. The GCMA is the UK body which represents and provides professional support to 1,800 golf clubs across the country. It recently identified a two-year stagnation in financial performance for many of its members in the North. The Business Clinic is an education scheme which brings students together to form a ‘consultancy firm’ with aim of solving a specific business issue and provide free advice to clients. Working on a project basis, the students analyse the problem, consider potential solutions and provide a detailed report with a full presentation of their recommendations to the client. Sterling Consultancy, a team of four final year business students took on the challenge, researching and reviewing the current marketing and event management activities of various clubs across Cleveland, Cumbria, Northumberland, North Durham and Tyne and Wear. With the number of golfers taking to the fairways across the country in decline, the students analysed the state of the UK golf market and then researched the approach of clubs in the North and Scotland that are thriving in comparison to their counterparts. Through extensive market research, competitor analysis and interviews with club managers and golfers across the age spectrum, the team identified a lack of exposure regionally and nationally for Golf Tourism in the Northern Region when compared to Scotland and southern counties.
Club marketing efforts were insufficient with digital marketing and engagement through social media underutilised and inconsistent. There are frequent failures to maximise the value and reach of digital marketing with many websites in poor working order or lacking functionality across mobile devices. To address the issues identified, Sterling Consultancy devised a range of practical recommendations to drive greater participation in golf for local people and visitors, to ultimately increase club membership, revenue and sustainability. This included taking a collaborative approach with clubs working together to offer golf holiday packages across multiple courses. Peter Jobe, regional manager, Northern GCMA, said: “The golf industry has changed enormously. Traditionally marketing was never a major requirement; the sport was always popular attracting members of all ages. The upshot is that now, clubs really need to operate like a business and where internal marketing skills and resources are in short supply, they need to be developed in order to appeal and engage with today’s younger, digitally savvy audience.
“I’ve been extremely impressed by the students’ report and recommendations. The team identified valid, inexpensive solutions to help managers to grow and run a profitable business. They understood the brief and provided an excellent level of information and knowledge for us to share with members. We are now considering taking the report to the next level by developing a social media marketing strategy and Northern Golf Week events.” Speaking on behalf of Sterling Consultancy, Business with International Management student Abby Wiffen, 23 from Cambridgeshire, said: “This was genuine work experience for us. As a team, we developed a good client relationship with Peter and I think we have presented real solutions that will add value to clubs and bring tourism benefits to the local economy.”
Following the success of project, Peter is now actively looking at the feasibility of putting a business student intern into a golf club to produce a marketing programme which could be adopted by most golf clubs through Northumbria University’s Santander Internship programme. Nigel Coates, Business Clinic director, said: “We have been delighted to work with the Northern region of the GCMA. They approached us for support in proactively tackling a very real issue for golf clubs in our region. “The Business Clinic is committed to making a positive impact on our clients, and our goal is always to provide a real solution to the issue being confronted. We have the knowledge and expertise to support organisations across all sectors, and have been successful in working with businesses both regionally and nationally.”
Q&A with Tubes and “FOOOORE HOLE CHALLENGE”
It has been well documented that you have had your struggles with mental health; how are you now? Yeah, good. Definitely speaking about it has really helped and I’ve always said it how it is anyway, so the reason I took time off earlier in the season was because I wasn’t myself. It wasn’t affecting me when I was away from the golf course, I was fine, but as soon as I stepped back on to the golf course or thought about tournaments, the anxiety and the worry about golf tournaments, I couldn’t play. So I pulled out of a load of golf tournaments last minute, I don’t know why but I just couldn’t be there. I think not knowing why, was frustrating me the most about it. Then it kind of played on my mind. My fiancée Jodie and helped me, and she found a psychologist and once I started to work with him, things just began to make sense after a while. I didn’t realise after 2016, going to America in 2017 with the buildup and the amount of pressure that I put on myself was just crazy. I was expecting to go there and just win tournaments and you’re thinking ‘if you don’t, people aren’t gonna like you’. So much pressure. Then I came back after about five months and played at Wentworth and finished around 20th, 20th at The Scottish Open, mid 20s at The British Open, and I walked off the course every time just thinking ‘Another crap week. Another bad week.
Not good enough’, and all of a sudden, my mindset had changed. They were good weeks and it was only a couple of shots for a top 10 in some of the best fields that you’re going to play with the best players. So really, they’re good weeks, but I was looking at it like another bad week. I had a lot of change last year, a change of coach as well and after all then all of a sudden I was like ‘What’s going on here, everything has just changed’, and I just couldn’t understand why. When you dig into it and think it’s all that pressure, it makes sense now, why I was feeling like that.
On a serious note, I’ve been through it before. I had it when my dad died. My dad died a few years back, and for a year I was fine, looking after my mum, my brother, and then all of a sudden I got the post traumatic stress and depression and it’s horrible; you feel worthless don’t you, you’re not good enough, people don’t like you, and I know exactly what you’re saying. But I turned to alcohol. That’s the thing, it’s hard to say stuff, and I didn’t say stuff for ages. But that’s what men do isn’t it? I wouldn’t say anything, I would just go and get a bottle of vodka and get absolutely smashed. Because I didn’t talk, no-one knew.
Beef, you’re a massive Arsenal fan, what have you made of it this season? Shambles really! I thought Emery did a decent job last season, I know they had a poor finish, but I thought that’s alright if they buy a few players, it’s more his team, and they just seem to have got worse this season. I know it’s early on but again, spending money in the wrong places. Although Pepe might become a great player, I thought surely they need a good midfielder and a good defender first. That’s what seems to happen there – spend in the wrong place and still can’t defend. It’s strange. I think it’s too soon to get Emery out, but you have to see what happens during the course of the season. It’s early, but it’s strange, it’s not right there, but I think it goes all the way through, past the manager into the owners as well so I think there’s a lot more behind it. But Arsenal are not in a good place at the moment.
The pressure you put on yourself never goes because that’s the nature of sport, you want to compete, you want to win tournaments. I was worried about what people think, I felt like I fell massively in America, so all of a sudden that mindset just changed and I was just beating myself up slowly over a period of a year and a half without even realising.
And then it has a knock-on effect because they think you’re having fun because you’re hammered, and obviously of you being that funny character all the time, people come up to you expecting that to be you, but ideally you want to get away and people have no idea of what’s going through someone’s head.
I wasn’t myself on the golf course, I was miserable, I was angry, I didn’t want to be involved with the crowd, I just wanted to get away from it. Away from the course I was fine, we could go out and have fun, go for dinner, whatever – fine. As soon as I started thinking about golf and even building up to a tournament, I just wanted to smash something and I was angry already before I even went to the tournament.
But it’s very important if you’re having problems – speak about it. Big time.
Ian Wright was the reason that I supported Arsenal. Funny enough, my dad was a Tottenham fan. It was of because of watching Ian Wright as a kid, I just loved watching him play and the big smile that he had on his face, I just instantly took to him and he played for Arsenal, so that was it – I became an Arsenal fan!
I think the majority of people, no matter what they do in life, go through something like that. It doesn’t matter what you do, who you are, no matter how successful you are, it can happen to anyone.
Click here to watch the whole 4 holes
Why did you become an Arsenal fan?
How long have you been playing for? Since I was four. My dad used to play and we used to go over to the local pitch and putt, the little 9 hole courses and just go and whack it around there. Just kept going around and around and around, and I joined this place (North Middlesex Golf Club) when I was 9.
At what age did you think, you know what, I could have a career in this? It was one of the weird things, I didn’t really think about it too much. I was playing England boys stuff and once that sort of finished and I went into the mens, I didn’t really enjoy the mens side of it, it got a bit more serious, less fun and I ended up meeting someone and they just said ‘look, why don’t you give it a go’ and I was like ‘okay!’, so I didn’t really think too much about it, played the mini tours and then just tried to work my way up and see what would happen. Again, I didn’t really try and think too much and if thought if nothing happens for a couple of years, then I’ll move on to something else, and if it goes well then we’ll see, and it just kept going well and ended up where we are now. It’s pretty mad! It’s just something I never expected, something I thought would never happen, it was never a plan or anything. It’s just one of those things where I turn up at the US Open in 2016 and a few people starting shouting Beef and stuff, and I just think what is going on here, what is happening.
Playing well in The Open, that’s when it kicked off. I was out and about after, and people would come up in the street and stuff like that and I was like ‘Oh my God, what is this’. I’m just used to a small little club, hanging around, messing around with my mates, playing my golf, having fun and that’s it. And the next thing it was just like ‘Bang!’, what’s happened here. People asking me to go on TV shows and Soccer AM, stuff like that, and it’s a program I’ve watched since I was a kid and now they’re asking me to be on it, like ‘Oh my God, what is happening?!’ I still can’t really explain it
Why are you called Beef? I think I was walking up this very hole and my friend was walking down the hole over there, and I had a big head of curly hair, I must have been about 12. I walked over because there’s water there and you have to walk across the bridge and he came over and walked past and said ‘Look at you and your big head. You’ve got a big bit of beef on your head. You’ve got a beef-head!’, one of my good mates and that was it. He just called me beef-head, then told everyone, got shortened to Beef and that was it.
So the beard has absolutely nothing to do with you being called Beef? Absolutely nothing, no. The thing with the beard was that I played a lot of tournaments in 2015 and it was quite long –
I wouldn’t say it was at a beard stage at that point. A few of the players and caddies made a few passing comments, so I was going to leave it over Christmas, come back in the dessert and there’s gonna be another two and a half months of growth in there and see what people say. Thomas Bjorn was one of them and I saw him coming, I was on the putting green and I saw him coming over so I shoved a load of tees in my beard, and he walked up and looked at me and just said ‘What the f*ck is that!’, and I knew I was going to get a good reaction off him and only did it as a bit of a joke. Then after I won in Spain, I had a few funny comments from it saying 'your beard is a bag imagine for golf’, so I said you know what, I’m going to keep it now. It made my mind up.
How is it a bad image for golf? No idea. It just doesn’t make any sense. I was like I’m not going to listen to anyone, and it just stuck. It’s conditioned, moisturised, whatever the barber gives me. If all the golfers had a fight, who’s coming out on top? Who is the hardest golfer? I think Scott Hend has a temper on him, you wouldn’t want to cross. I wouldn’t wind him up! I’ve heard Ernie back in the day, again don’t cross him. Big dude as well. I think he’s one of them, very chilled but push the wrong button… don’t mess!
I’ve seen you at the gym – you can lift some serious weight! Yeh, I enjoy it! The problem is, enjoying the gym and enjoying food, one outweighs the other… I do enjoy it and I try and keep on top of it, keep training, always want to learn so that I can hit the ball a bit further and stay injury free, but it’s one of the things that I find really had to do. I went through a big training session last year for about eight weeks, and I was probably hitting it about 10 yards further, but it’s maintaining it whilst I’m away. I don’t want to be lifting those weights during tournaments, and everything starts feeling different, and I lose that feel and comfort when I play, so I’m always trying to find a balance when I’m playing.
You’re known as a joker, who else would you take out on a night out for a laugh out of the golfers? Stenson’s good, very dry sense of humour but he’s good, always have a laugh with him. He’s good value. I don’t know if you saw there was an exchange between him and Tiger, and Tiger said ‘Henrik thinks he’s the funniest on tour, but he’s not’, and then Henrik wrote back saying ‘Well the reason that you’ve had so many injuries is from laughing at all of my jokes’, and just got him straight back like that and that’s what he’s like, he’s quick and funny’.

Ganton Golf Club chosen to host three major championships
Reviews of the year 2019
Ganton Golf Club near Scarborough is set to host three major golfing events over the next two years. The North Yorkshire course has been selected by England Golf as the venue for the Men’s International Match between England and France on 9th and 10th May 2020. In 2021, England Golf has awarded Ganton the English Men's Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship for the Brabazon Trophy, which will be held between 20th to 23rd May and attract players from around the world. 2021 will be the Brabazon Trophy’s 75th anniversary and the fifth occasion on which the tournament has been played over the Ganton links, the last being in 2006. The R & A, which, with its equivalent in the United States, governs the sport of golf worldwide, has announced that Ganton has been chosen to host the Women’s and Girls’ Home Internationals – England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – from 4th to 6th August 2021. Club Secretary Gary Pearce said: “This is great news for Ganton and for the whole area. We are looking forward to welcoming these prestigious championships, and for competitors and spectators to experience what our club has to offer both in terms of the challenging course and the warm hospitality.”
For five Ganton lady members – Ann Briggs, Pat Smillie, Sara Gilmore, Naomi Edwards and Rachel Bell - and Emma Brown, the Club’s Assistant Secretary, the 2021 Women’s Home Internationals will bring back fond memories of their own time representing England at this highest level, some doing so for several years. Founded in 1891, Ganton Golf Club is one of the world’s top 80 courses and one of only four clubs in the UK that has hosted the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup. The course has firm and fast fairways, notoriously cavernous bunkers and, being founded on a sandy subsoil, offers fine playing conditions in winter and summer alike. Visitors are welcome to play the course during the week and at weekends. Bookings are to be made in advance and players must have a current handicap certificate.

Whitefields Golf Club
Review Quarterly Magazine | Competitions | News | Reviews | Club Directory
Mick and Richie try out the revolutionary Toptracer driving range at Whitefields Golf Club It’s the end of October, and Richard and I find ourselves in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, at the wrong end of the year for our usual liking. But there is a reason, as we head towards the spectacular and challenging course of Whitefields Golf Club.
All you could want, all year round, in the heart of warwickshire Before we get to that, what about the course? It is a 6,289-yard Par 71 with three par-3s and two par-5s, with the remaining par-4s ranging from 249-yards to 445-yards. Beware though, what the short ones give you, the long ones take back.
Situated off the A45 close to both the M1 and M6 motorways, you can’t get much more central than Whitefields, a club and course opened in partnership with the 49-room Draycote Hotel in 1992. Sitting above the beauty of Draycote Waters, and with the hotel facilities, Whitefields is the perfect venue for golfing breaks and society days. But that is not why we are here, or indeed why we have left it so late in the year. Firstly, its reputation for good natural drainage was born out by the fact it remained open all through last winter.
It is a challenging and testing course, very enjoyable whatever your handicap.
With Mick & Richie
The course lends itself to lovely views of the Draycote reservoir, with some good water features along the way. In particular, the par3, 174-yarder 16th, surrounded by water, is a great golfing hole. The layout is good, and is fairly easy to walk, although plenty of buggies are available if required. So overall, yes, it is a good course. The tees are good, the fairways are good, and, for the time of the year, the greens are in excellent condition.
Secondly, and more importantly, Whitefields has recently opened its brand new revolutionary Toptracer driving range, PGA Professional and director of golf David Mills and his team have invited Richard and I along to give it a try to see what we think.
01788 521800 mail@draycotehotel.co.uk www.whitefieldsgolfclub.
As rains sets in, we head towards the floodlit, 16-bay Toptracer driving range, alongside the 18-hole putting green and chipping and bunker area. As an extra bonus, all the bays in the covered driving range are fitted with tables, and a good selection of snacks and drinks can be ordered and delivered to your bay.
Using the same technology that you see on your TV when the coloured line follows the ball flight of a shot, the Toptracer range works by tracking your ball to deliver graphics on-screen. The set-up is easy, even a dinosaur like me soon got the hang of it. You just have to tap and play, or you can download the app to your smartphone, this will then record all of your historic shot data. There is a choice of games and shot data modes, so you can tailor your driving range experience. You can play some of the world’s greatest courses, right from your bay. Individuals and groups can play a full 18-holes without ever leaving the range. It is fully interactive. You can measure your drives and carry, and discover the exact distance you hit each club in your bag. I found I had two clubs in my bag I hit exactly the same, so why carry them both? Even more so in winter, when we do actually carry them! So yes, Toptracer is great to have a bit of fun on, but you can also learn a lot about your own game. All in all, we find a golf course, in the heart of Warwickshire, with all the practice facilities you could possibly require, and a hotel for corporate days and golf breaks. All the staff, from the hotel up to David and his team could not do enough for us, this is a very well run and professional set up.
We will definitely be back.

Review One of the very best, Little Aston Golf Club
With Mick & Richie
Designed in 1908 by the 6-time open champion Harry Vardon and later re-modelled by Harry Colt, Little Aston was rated the number one parkland golf course in England in the 2019 Golf World Rankings. We were lucky enough to play the Little Aston golf course in Sutton Coldfield, in August when it was in peak condition. Having heard a lot of positive feedback about the club and course, we were really looking forward to playing here and it definitely lived up to out expectations! On arriving at the golf club, we drove through some pretty exclusive real estate to reach the gated clubhouse where there was ample car parking and a very classy looking clubhouse building. Walking around to the front of the clubhouse the first thing that strikes you is the unique putting green or rather ‘putting course’! If you are lucky enough to play here, you must experience the putting course - its many contours and unique challenges are fabulous. There are also other very good practice facilities here including a brilliant chipping and short game area as well as an extensive driving range. Prior to teeing it up, we had a good chat with Little Aston’s Head PGA Professional, Brian Rimmer who gave us a few good pointers to take out in to the course. Iain Burns the Club Manager then came out to greet us. Formerly of the Forest of Arden, after talking to Iain, you soon get to realise how professionally run and well organised this golf club really is.
The club’s highly trained staff are friendly and make you feel most welcome at the prestigious club.
The Little Aston golf course itself was amazing with perfect weather for golf it was in tremendous condition throughout. A 6,417 yard par 72 from the yellow tees with three par 3s and three par 5s, the back nine plays a little longer than the front although bunkers are plentiful over both loops of nine.
The fairways were lovely and firm as well as being beautifully cut – complemented by true and fairrunning greens with a few tricky flag positions. Excellent course management is needed here. The golf course’s surrounding are very tranquil and can be enjoyed as the course is relatively flat and easy-walking.
Needless to say, we were left very impressed with our Little Aston Golf Club experience.
Following our round, we entered the classy clubhouse building for some excellent food and drink all served by attentive staff with a smile.

ENVILLE GOLF CLUB With Mick & Richie
The surrounding long rough is heather and sits just off the second cut of light rough to catch any wayward shots. The fairways are shaped to perfection and can be fairly linksy in places, so allowing a good run.
A lovely day for golf at Enville Golf Club A warm sunny day in May. No better day to visit Enville Golf Club, nr Stourbridge. And we are lucky enough to be playing here on a day when they have just finished hosting the England Ladies Open Qualifier, so the golf course in in pristine condition. Enville Golf feature two eighteen hole golf courses, the Highgate (par 72 course), and the Lodge (a par 71 course). Both courses are set out to the highest European Tour standard and boast thirtysix uniquely contrasting holes. Today we are playing the Highgate course, and what a gem the course is with a blend of heathland and woodland characteristics.
We quickly found that the key here, is to take a lower club allowing you to get into a strong position for your shot into the green. Before our round, we tried out Enville’s practice facilities which we found were of superior standard, including a 360 yard driving range and three short game areas.
Out on the course Standing on the first tee of the Highgate - a short 464 yard, par 5 - you could be forgiven for assuming you were standing on a green as the tee's are extremely well cared for, this course cannot be praised enough.
ENVILLE GOLF CLUB
This is clearly one of the best golf course that we have played for a while. The undulation and shapes of the holes are stunning, without a blemish on them. The Highgate at Enville is clearly a course that is maintained to the highest standard. A lot of the holes on the Highgate are tree-lined – meaning that there is no need to take out the big stick! The four lengthy par 5’s on the course include the monster 9th hole which plays to every inch of its 586 yards from the yellow tees, requiring three well positioned shots to get there. There are four par 3’s that truly wonderful holes to play, and with a couple of exciting par fours back to back on the 12th and 13th, this makes for a brilliant course. Albeit a difficult, but equally as fun challenge. All members of the Enville team that we met during our visit were very friendly from the grounds-keeping team to the staff on reception.
We would strongly recommend a visit to Enville Golf Club - you'll not be disappointed, as this is a club and course is of the highest quality.

Cleeve Hill Golf Club With Mick & Richie A world apart Cleeve Hill Golf Club
Before embarking on a round at Cleeve Hill Golf Club, we knew that this golf course was going to be different to any other inland course we have ever played. Perched on top of the highest point in the Cotswolds, Cleeve Hill is a heathland links course with 360 degree views of the picturesque Gloucestershire countryside. We played the 6, 083 yard, par 69 off the yellow tees but with all the hills and undulations of the landscape, it plays a lot longer! The course encompassed four fantastic par 3s that are very difficult in the wind as well as some long, tough par 4s and one par 5.
The par 4, 12th hole which is stroke index 2 on the scorecard is a fantastic golf hole.
Cleeve Hill Golf Club Set on common land, the course is shared with ramblers, but this isn't an issue as the course is wide with loads of space. Sat on the highest point in the Cotswolds, your game is really open to the elements and when the wind gets up, it's fantastic fun trying to play low shots and run the ball in to the long and narrow greens. Most of the time you also find your ball either above or below your feet so, a good test in ball striking. The fairways are good and linksy as are the greens but beware, stray too far off the fairway and there is a lot of gorse that will swallow your ball up! The golf club was easily accessed and adequate car parking was available. Dore & Totley Golf Club
With Mick & Richie
Value for money and an enjoyable day at Dore & Totley Golf Club Accessible from the south, Dore & Totley Golf Club is a really good parkland golf course situated on the outskirts of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Head Professional, Steve Roberts who gave us a few good pointers before we went out! We were apprehensive but, the course was not to hilly considering the area it's located in. Our round on the mature Dore & Totley golf course exceeded expectations. The 6,331 yard par 72 feature three par 5s and three par 3s all with varying levels of difficulty. There is not a boring hole on this course with eighteen truly unique golf holes. You will not ‘play the same hole twice’ as with many parkland golf courses.
You must to be accurate from the tees and pick where you want to land your tee shot to make for a good angle into the green. The greens are very good and fast but they are very well protected lots of bushes and trees in close proximity to the second cut. The fairways were very good and well-manicured whilst the tee boxes were well presented with hole planners on each showing you the hole and where the trouble lay. There was also lots of bunkers on this golf course with good quality sand in them, to catch any wayward approach shots. The key to a good round at Dore & Totley is definitely in approaching the well-protected greens.
Aside from the golf course, Dore & Totley Golf Club was also home to a great practice area and putting green, a good clubhouse with friendly, attentive staff.

Penn Golf Club
With Mick & Richie Penn Golf Club – a smashing course! Easy to find, on the outskirts of Wolverhampton set in Penn common, Penn Golf Club is home to a lovely heathland golf course. First impressions were good as we drove into the club’s grounds through the prestigious electricgated car park. The first thing we saw was an extensive putting green next to the first tee and the superblyappointed clubhouse building. The club’s Head PGA Professional Liam and his team gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel right at ease when checking in for our round.
The Penn golf course itself is a 6,174 yard par 70 of the yellows with four par 3s ranging in distance from 128 yards to 199 yards - and very nice they are to. There are two good par 5s requiring accuracy from the tee to make par.
The mature and well-established golf course is easy-walking and fairly flat – ideal for societies. Fairly wide, the greens and fairways well maintained promoting a good pace for our round. However, there are plenty of traps just waiting to catch your ball, very strategically placed with additional drainage ditches crossing the fairways. The course is split by a country lane that you cross to play the back nine then back across to finish off on the 18th. Our personal favourite hole was the par 4, 8th - stroke index 1 and a great golfing hole.
All in all, Penn Golf Club offered great value for money, ranging from £15 to £25 for eighteen holes, even at the weekend! It’s a smashing golf course with a great atmosphere!

The Rushcliffe Golf Club With Mick & Richie Easily accessed off the M1 motorway, Rushcliffe Golf Club has ample car parking spaces next to a nice-looking clubhouse building. The first thing we noticed when approaching the clubhouse, was a large chipping green and nets to the left-hand side as well as a lovely putting green in front, adjacent to the first tee. First impressions were good. The clubhouse is perched on top of a large hill overlooking the golf course and there is a great patio area to sit and take in the stunning views that the location has to offer.
A memorable day’s golf at The Rushcliffe
The golf Set on the hillside overlooking south Nottinghamshire, the Rushcliffe course encompassed eighteen individually unique holes of golf. At 5,806 yards long, the par 70 menders through woodland and features mature and undulating fairways with lots of hills creating a few blind holes. A great challenge and a quality course, Rushcliffe is home to an eclectic mix of five fantastic par 3s - a mixture of long and short varying from 120 yards to 224 yards. There are three good par 5s and a lot of elevated greens requiring a high approach shot to stop the ball rolling to the back. The course had good greens to putt on with a lot of subtle slopes to deal with. Club Professional, Chris Hall - a professional golfer for 40 years - has been with Rushcliffe for the past 21 years and gave us a warm welcome to the club. Chris has a bag full of knowledge so if there is anything you need to know relating to the course he is the man to see. During our time at the golf club, we also met Manager, Marc and the current Club Captain who made us feel most welcome. Without doubt Rushcliffe is a really friendly club – chatting to members on the putting green, they were very hospitable and obviously very proud of their course. Rushcliffe Golf Club offer excellent membership deals as well as reasonably priced visitor green fees –the best value in Nottinghamshire.

Great value for money, Uttoxeter Golf Club

Uttoxeter Golf Club With Mick & Richie
Accessible from all areas of the UK, Staffordshire is a county that combines natural beauty with traditions. The perfect retreat for a short break, the county and surrounding towns and villages are home to a variety of attractions which mean accommodation is affordable and there are plenty of eateries to choose from. Uttoxeter is a friendly market town in Staffordshire. Positioned close to the River Dove and near to the cities of Stoke-on-Trent and Derby, Uttoxeter Racecourse is one of the town’s main attractions and is just a short walk from the town centre as is the golf course. Alton Towers resort is located just ten miles away and The Peak District National Park is about twenty miles from Uttoxeter town centre. Uttoxeter Golf Club sits, nestled next to the Racecourse and River Dove overlooking the Weaver Hills. The challenging parkland golf course offers an enjoyable experience for all and is widely regarded as one of the country’s best kept secrets and could be classed as a hidden gem in the heart of the Staffordshire countryside.
The Your Golfer Magazine team were lucky enough to play the Uttoxeter golf course
Uttoxeter was a very tight golf course with lots of blind shots calling for accuracy to find the hidden fairways. A very hilly golf course running along the side of Uttoxeter race course, the par 69, measures 5,501 yards from the yellow tees and is home to four straightforward par 3s and only one par 5 within the eighteen holes. The golf course was very well kept with manicured fairways and small, receptive greens. Players really have to think their way around this golf course with the main challenge being the numerous blind traps and hazards to catch any wayward approach shots. The clubhouse and professional staff at Uttoxeter Golf Club were very friendly and attentive whilst green fees were very reasonably priced at just £20 to play midweek and £25 at weekends.

Review Calling for accuracy, The Leicestershire
With our reviewers Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes. The clubhouse staff were very pleasant whilst the club’s facilities were excellent. The menu was extensive and reasonably priced. The Leicestershire’s club Professional was especially helpful and my playing partner and I a tour of the facilities and explained a few things about the golf club. The 6,456 yard par 70 course is set in beautiful parkland and can be played in various layouts. The enjoyable golf course features a good variety of holes with no hole the same calling for approach shots using different irons.
Located in the heart of England, the land-locked county of Leicestershire is definitely one where visitors are able to experience the great outdoors and, one of the friendliest regions that you’ll come across on your golfing travels.
The Blue tees incorporate two par 5s on holes 6 and 9 whilst when playing from the Yellow tees, the course consist of all par 3s and 4s with some very long par 4s to challenge the lowest of handicappers.
Founded in 1890, The Leicestershire Golf Club is the oldest golf club in the county.
The par 3 holes played quite long and challenging calling for accuracy and little room for error.
The beautiful parkland golf course, standing to the south of the city of Leicester, features mature, tree-lined fairways and greens of the finest quality which challenge low-handicappers whilst remaining suitable playability for all standards of golfer. Upon arrival at The Leicestershire Golf Club, the home of the 2019 English men's open mid-amateur stroke play - the Logan Trophy - the first thing I noticed was the fantastic circular clubhouse building which boasts great views across the golf course and beyond to the surrounding, picturesque Leicestershire countryside.
Although tree-lined, the course does offer two short par 4 holes the 7th and 13th. There are also a few ‘risk and reward’ holes. The Leicestershire is a nice course with very pretty surroundings and represents a good test of golf for all, whilst providing good value for money to visitors and society groups.

SAPEY GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
The course boasts six wonderful par 3 holes, each with a unique challenge where brave shots are rewarded. The front nine of the Rowen sets out tight to the boundaries of the golf course calling for accuracy from the tee whilst the back nine plays inside the front nine. There are quite a lot of bunkers - all of good quality, and quite a few water hazards dotted around the course catching any wayward shots. The 27-holes feature a varied selection of golf holes with no hole looking or playing the same. The grass around the fringes of the receptive greens made for some great lies with the ball sitting nicely for a wellexecuted chip. A nice touch by the green-keeping staff saw all bunkers with rakes fitted with holders, painted bright hazard yellow. So for those who have not played the course before, they were clearly visible! This is a great venue for society golf with visitors welcome seven days a week and, all-in-all, golf, dining and hospitality all combined to result in a very enjoyable day out.

The Sapey clubhouse is very nice. There is a large golfers spike bar a restaurant with pretty views and a balcony overlooking the golf course. The Sapey Golf Club comprises a testing 27-hole golf course but the main 18 holes are featured on the enjoyable yet challenging, Rowen course. A par 69, measuring 5,705 yards from the yellow tee, the course is superbly presented and offers some magnificent views across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

A PREMIER PARKLAND COURSE SINCE 1899
If you do play Porters Park, you won't forget it in a hurry!
With Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes.
Richard and I recently jumped at the chance to play the Porters Park Golf Club in Radlett, Hertfordshire. In glorious weather, it was the perfect day to play a course which has hosted Open Championship regional qualifiers in the past. Easy to find, just 10-15 minutes from the M1, Porters Park is located only 15 miles from the centre of London but you would never know.
The first impression as you enter the club is an impressive one;
The clubhouse is a beautiful looking building with a fantastic putting green and patio. The patio itself overlooks both the 1st tee and 18th green as well as a large practice green, practice bunkers and two driving bays. The putting green is synonymous of the eighteen greens out on the course - all the same pace and excellent to putt on. The greens were also very receptive you can really attack the flags. Porters Park use a Red, Yellow and White system to alert players to the day’s flag location. A Red flag demonstrates that the flag is positioned to the front of the green; Yellow, to the middle and a White flag means that it is located to the back of the putting surface. We found this a very helpful system, especially as there are a few long, narrow greens which are mostly elevated out on the course.
The Par 3, 9th Porters Park can be perceived as a short course at just 6,066 yards from the yellow tees. This particular par 70 course seems to play longer and calls for good course management skills with two Par 5 holes and a few lengthy Par 4s.
A wonderful day out and a lovely well-cared for golf course.
The fairways are very well groomed and the surroundings of the golf course are stunning with beautiful scenery and stunning views. One of the most picturesque parkland golf courses that I have played. Porters Park Features four stunning par 3s which will be remembered for all of the right reasons. My favourite hole was the Par 3, 9th, Overall, the course is well protected with some interesting traps and strategically placed bunkers. However, with the sand in the bunkers being of such high quality, they were excellent to play from. We also noticed a stream that runs through the heart of the course. The club house and extensive patio is an ideal area to relax for a drink and a bite to eat following your round. The staff could not do enough for you and the members were extremely welcoming, which, all in all went to creating a really warm and pleasant atmosphere. A fantastic way to end a fantastic day at a fantastic forward thinking golf club. If you do play Porters Park, I can guarantee that you will not forget the experience in a hurry.

Nuneaton Golf Club... With Michael Hammerton & Richard Wykes.
Review A lovely golf course, with challenging varied holes and good value for money, Nuneaton Golf Club provides a test to even the most accomplished of golfer. A gem in the Midlands, Nuneaton Golf Club is the home of the European Tour’s Andy Sullivan and is easy to find, just 10-15 minutes from the M6/M69 Coventry junction. As I drove along the golf club’s drive, it was hard to ignore the view as it runs up alongside the 18th hole bringing you to the club house. The first thing that we notice, is an ample-sized car park and a fantastically-appointed, raised terrace overlooking the 18th green, the centre piece of the clubhouse building. There is also a good-sized putting green by the clubhouse and a chipping green and practice bunker by the 1st and 10 tees. On our arrival and whilst checking in with the pro shop, the staff of Nuneaton Golf Club were pleasant and friendly. From the professional shop to the bar, every member of the club’s team greeted me with smile and a warm welcome. Nothing was too much. Due to the recent poor weather and in order to preserve the fairways, the club’s professional team provided me with a small mat to take around the course and play off (or you do have the option to take the ball 90 degrees of the fairway and drop it). Head Pro, Craig told us that this simple procedure occurs for four weeks of the year, ‘which leads to great fairways for the summer months’.
The golf course Out on the well-manicured fairways, Nuneaton Golf Club was a testing golf course whilst also being great fun! Measuring 6147 yards from the yellow tees, the par 71 golf course comprises a variety of par 3s, 4s and 5s. During my round, I was particularly impressed with: The opening, 1st hole which is a straight downhill par 4 – a nice start to what proved to be a tricky round! The 3rd hole - another par 4 - SI 1, 443 yards dog-leg right - a risk and reward hole, players are tempted to play their approach over the trees to the right hand corner of the fairway. The signature dog leg left, 15th hole calls for some thought. A well-positioned drive up to the pond must be long enough to give you a shot on to the green otherwise this hole calls for a lay-up!
Michael & Richard arrive at the club The long par 5, 18th, is uphill and bending round to the right to a small green - a great finishing hole. The greens were very consistent and, on the day, were running at a fair speed! They are quite small with trouble behind most. Nuneaton golf course is set in tranquil surroundings creating a peaceful ambience to a round of golf.
A good variety of holes offering a unique blend of dog-legs, short and long holes; tree-lined fairways and raised tees, made for truly memorable experience.
You must hit the fairways to give you a chance to get on those small greens!

Llanymynech Golf Club
Sounds fanciful I know, however, let me introduce you to a golf club that can offer just that and more. Sitting just south of Oswestry in Shropshire lies Llanymynech Golf Club, with Offas Dyke (the largest ancient monument following the border between England and Wales) running through the course Llanymynech offers an abundance of greenery and some of the most fantastic scenery you will find anywhere in the UK. Due to the fantastic drainage that this club has painstakingly maintained through its history, Llanymynech can provide golfers of all abilities a year round course that plays as well in the winter as it does in the summer. In fact Ian Woosnam first learnt to play golf here at the age of nine years old and Llanymynech still remains one of his favourite courses to play to this day. In fact the Woosnam family have got a long tradition with Llanymynech Golf Club with both Ian’s Mother and Father being previous captains and still have a firm association with it up to the present day. With 15 holes in Wales and 3 holes in England you are provided with the unique opportunity to drive off on the 4th hole in Wales and actually putt out on the same hole in England! Making Llanymynech Golf Club the only dual nationality golf course in Europe. The twelth hole (the highest point) on this fantastic yet challenging golf course offers stunning views of Shropshire and the Welsh border with a toposcope to point out the places of interest , making your golf experience as pleasurable as can be found in this part of the UK. A club member and past lady captain goes on to say we aim to provide great day’s golf and a friendly welcome on the course and in the clubhouse.

The legendary, James Braid The world renowned, James Braid was one of the finest golf course designers of all time and was one of the leading golfers of his generation. Wherever you travel in the UK to play golf, it is safe to say that you will never be too far away from a James Braid designed golf course. A member of the World of Golf Hall of Fame, Braid was born in Earlsferry, Fife in 1870 and originally trained as a carpenter. Following memberships at St Andrews and Walton Heath, Braid became one of the founding members of the world’s first Professional Golfer’s Associations and won the much coveted, Open Championship five times at Prestwick, St Andrews and Muirfield. During his illustrious playing career, James Braid pioneered the use of aluminium headed putters with which, he became lethal on the greens. Along with fellow golfers of the period, JH Taylor and Harry Vardon, Braid dominated the game in the 20th Century.
The fairways of the future Building on his experience of playing in major tournaments and with a keen eye for design and construction, Braid later went on to set the standard in golf design that the rest of the world would follow. Renowned for dog-leg angles and pot bunkers, proud Scotsman, James Braid designed over two hundred golf courses in Scotland and the rest of the UK. With a dislike of travel, Braid designed only one course in the United States which he didn’t actually visit in person; and also two golf courses for the Singapore Island Country Club in Asia, using topographic maps to plan his layouts, which were constructed to his orders. Few James Braid designed are ever likely to disappoint from Gleneagles in Perthshire to his last course which was built in 1950 at Stranraer in the Dumfries & Galloway countryside, Braid’s designs can be seen from Fairhaven in Lancashire and further south at Thorpeness in Suffolk and Royal Cinque Ports on the Kent coastline. James Braid courses typically share several ‘trademark’ features, which grew out of his love for working with the natural geographic features underlying each course. Working with the natural lie of the land, in a typical James Braid golf course you’re likely to encounter dog legs which encourage playing for position, and the incorporation of natural obstacles and layouts. But even with these common features, Braid’s courses still manage to vary greatly in length and character.
