This year has seen the professional game throw up some great action. Phil Mickelson, for instance, made history by becoming the oldest golfer to win a major championship at the age of 50 with his win at this year's PGA Championship. Hideki Matsuyana also made history by becoming the first Japanese to win a major golf championship and Jon Rahm became the first Spaniard to win the US Open. Equally, the women's game secured a second victory on American soil with a 15-13 win over team USA in the Solheim Cup. Overall, the game seems to be getting back to its thrilling best. Whilst the pro circuit looks towards an exciting 2022 this issue of Your Golfer Magazine offers a unique insight into some of the best courses that the UK has to offer. So, if you're looking for a venue for your society or away day in 2022 this issue is definitely for you! This just leaves us to wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. EGD To Honour Pete Dye At The Legacy Club EDGWARE, LONDON, UK - - The Dye London is to be renamed The Legacy Club, and will be brought to completion by European Golf Design (EGD) following the deaths of pioneering golf course architect Pete Dye in early 2020, and his son Perry in 2021. The project, which was originally announced in 2013, was set to bring the Dye family’s unique brand of creative golf course design to the UK for the first time, tempting golfers with a spectacular new challenge from the designer of iconic PGA Tour venues such as Sawgrass, Kiawah Island, Whistling Straits and Harbour Town. “We will be realising the vision which Pete and Alice Dye originally had for the golf course, including the routing, but we will provide the detail” said European Golf Design’s Managing Director, Jeremy Slessor. “The Legacy Club will be enjoyable and playable for all golfers, but will also offer a challenge worthy of a Tour venue.” The new 18-hole golf course in Edgware, north London, will be the first collaboration between the Menai-Davis family and EGD, the golf course design company of the European Tour Group. Tony and Anne Menai-Davis plus their sons Ceri and Cae, co-owners of The Legacy Club, and creators of the Seve Ballesteros-designed The Shire London and the forthcoming The London Links, chose the new name in honour of the Dye family, and also after a family tragedy of their own.

Pete Dye (front) with (from left) Cae and Tony Menai-Davis, Alice and Perry Dye, Ceri Menai-Davis “My eldest Ceri and his wife lost their young son, Hugh, to cancer in summer 2021” said Tony Menai-Davis. “This much-loved and extraordinarily brave young man left us at just six years old, but he filled our lives with enough wonderful memories to last a lifetime. We will think of him every day, and his favourite bird – the owl – will be in The Legacy Club’s logo. Ceri Menai-Davis said: “The Legacy Club will honour the love we all share for this magnificent sport of golf, and also the love we all have for people who are no longer here.

golf@theshirelondon.com

“My wife and I have created a charity, It’s Never You, to help parents of children who have potential life-limiting illness. The Legacy Club and our other facilities will all help these parents who are going through an indescribable time. “After many years working in golf and at The Shire London, which is itself driven by the legacy of another of golf’s true greats, Severiano Ballesteros, I can assure you that golfers will love The Legacy Club experience, even more so now we have the team at EGD to help us bring it to life.” Tony and Anne’s youngest son, Cae, cofounded The Golf Trust charity in 2012 and has helped to bring the benefits of golf to thousands of children over the last decade. “We are all somebody’s son or daughter, and when you become a parent you better understand the power of legacy, and what it means to provide a better society for our children” said Cae Menai-Davis. “When we met Pete & Alice Dye they could see that we were, like them, a close-knit family and we established a strong connection with them. It feels entirely natural, now, for Ceri and myself to help our family to create golf venues where people can discover a love for golf which might last them a lifetime. “And doing it in a way which honours not only Pete Dye’s legacy but also Hugh’s feels like the most natural thing of all.” The Menai-Davis family business now includes five golf facilities in the London area, but The Legacy Club will be their first venture with European Golf Design – creators of The Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor, the venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, and Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, the venue for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

The Legacy Club’s logo features an owl illustration by Hugh Menai-Davis “I have known Jeremy for 20 years, and EGD is a world-class team of golf course designers” said Tony MenaiDavis. “I am a big admirer of the work they have done, and we are thrilled to be working with EGD as we guide The Legacy Club towards its opening a few years from now.” “Pete Dye was one of golf’s true innovators” said Slessor, “and we have all been inspired by his designs. Although we didn’t have the opportunity to meet him and discuss his strategy for The Dye London, we will remain highly respectful of the foundations he and Perry laid here as we work hand in hand with the Menai-Davis family to prepare The Legacy Club for the changing demands of the modern sport.”

Award-Winning Golf In The Heart Of England

The Directors and Senior Management of Your Golfer eMagazine are extremely pleased to announce their Oxfordshire Golf Club of the Year as one of the oldest golf clubs in England, The Oxford Golf Club which is uniquely set in on an urban fringe in the county of Oxfordshire. The 2022 award recognises the outstanding golf course, first class facilities and magnificent hospitality provided by The Oxford which members of the Your Golfer team were able to experience first-hand on a recent visit the golf club. Set in 86 acres of beautiful parkland, just two miles from the centre of urban Oxford; The Oxford Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in England and, whilst retaining its traditional roots, the club meets the needs of the 21st Century golfer.

Oxfordshire Golf Club Of The Year 2022

www.oxfordgolfclub.net

The award-winning, Oxford Golf Club dates back as far as 1873 when golf was first played at the site. Today’s golf course has sprinklings of design by highly acclaimed golf course architect, James Braid making for a fantastic golfing treat for the visiting golfer as well as offering some splendid views of the surrounding Oxfordshire countryside. In 1922, Oxford Golf Club acquired the services of legendary golf course architect, Henry Shapland Colt (Harry Colt) to redesign the golf course. In his design, Colt incorporated some of the original holes laid out by James Braid retaining the course’s original features which sit with the landscape. Today with a thriving membership, the eighteen hole, par 70 Oxford golf course drains extremely well and provides visitors with an enjoyable yet stern test of golf all year round. In fact, the course is presented as well in the winter as it is during the summer months.

With a WHS course rating 70.8 and a slope rating of 130, the course represents a modest challenge to even the most accomplished of golfer and has hosted many amateur and professional events. Back in 2019 on April 15/16th, The Oxford Golf Club hosted a Jamega Tour event for 80 professional golfers across a 2 day competition. The condition of the course (especially the greens which are widely renowned as exceptional) was the star of the show. Due to the condition of the greens, the speed can be changed at will as proved when the Jamega guys wanted upwards of 12.0 on the stimpmeter – the green keeping team managed to achieve speeds of 13.5 which is ‘world class speed’.

A faultless golf course!! The Oxford’s clubhouse building is the ideal venue for all kinds of occasions, from formal dining to drinks with friends, business meetings and team building events to annual society meetings. The clubhouse is also home to the superbly appointed professional shop which stocks the latest in golfing equipment, clothing and accessories from some of the game’s leading manufacturers.

Why not see for yourself? Oxfordshire is a county full of superb golf courses and fantastic value for money offering everything you need for a thoroughly enjoyable golf break. The county lies between the Cotswolds to the west and the Chilterns to the east with a fantastic array of golf courses cut through the stunning pines and oaks that are featured in the landscape.

Oxfordshire is also home to several purposebuilt resorts which are ideally equipped for groups of golfers simply looking for a relaxing getaway. The luxurious hotels, stunning scenery and a great golfing history and tradition means a trip to the golf courses of Oxfordshire would definitely exceed expectations. Oxford Golf Club extends a warm welcome to visitors throughout the year through a range of comprehensive society packages to create the perfect golf day. Packages aim to meet the needs and requirements of the visiting party with Bronze, Silver and Gold days which can be tailored to include as much or as little catering as required with fantastic menu choice and first class service. The club’s professional team will also be on hand throughout the event to ensure that the event runs smoothly, allowing the organiser to enjoy all that Oxford Golf Club has to offer.

10-POINT GUIDE TO A GREENER FUTURE Working with the golf and leisure sector to help venues realise their sustainable goals, GreenClub has already made a huge impression in changing attitudes and approaches to the environment since launching last autumn. London Golf Club, host of the Cazoo Classic on the European Tour this summer, and Roganstown Hotel & Country Club in Ireland are just two of the venues to have benefitted from working with the specialist environmental consultants to further their combined aim of carbon neutrality. But GreenClub believes that the golf and leisure sector can do much more to help protect and promote the environment and, as the global golf industry gears up for COP26 in Glasgow next month – the 26th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference – the company has unveiled a 10-point plan that it is urging golf clubs and venues to adopt so that they can start their journey towards ultimately becoming ‘net zero.’ GreenClub’s eco-checklist covers all parts of everyday life and features a number of simple measures that not only promote a greener future but can also benefit venues financially. Switch off the lights and switch your bulbs to LED. Switch off “standby” appliances. When replacing old appliances, look for more energy efficient ones. Check that the fridge and freezer thermostats are at their most efficient setting and defrost regularly to maintain efficiency.

GreenClub chief executive, Liam Greasley, said: “This is a very real issue – it’s not a box ticking exercise – and the golf and leisure industry needs to start taking note of these issues. “The list that we have compiled and are asking people to follow shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for engaging in a longer-term strategy to make a difference. This is very much the start of the path towards carbon neutrality, and we would urge any venue that is serious about making a long-term commitment to the environment to speak to us.” GreenClub – a principal partner of the PGA – is committed to improving sustainability in the golf industry and beyond and their objective continues to gather pace on several fronts. As well as their consultation services to assess current and future needs of any business as they seek to reduce their carbon emissions, venues can also become generators of their own green renewable energy by utilising renewable energy options. In some cases, any surplus energy can then be sold to the local market, rather than back to the grid. For further information, visit www.greenclub.energy Stay in touch on social media: Facebook: @GreenClubenergy Twitter: @GreenClubenergy

Turn down the heating – even just one degree will make a difference. Be smart on water usage. Fit regulators on taps, showers and toilets so water can’t be left running. Check your building insulation and reduce draughts by closing doors and curtains. Use a smart meter to monitor energy usage. Encourage and incentivise your customers to car share ….. or cycle to your venue. Source the produce you require for your venue locally. Cut down on single-use plastics and use wooden or recycled golf tees.

Over 100 Years of Golfing History

Established in 1907, Llandrindod Golf Club has been welcoming golfers for over 100 years. The golf course was the brainchild of a group of local businessmen who identified land overlooking the Victorian Spa town as the ideal location for an 18hole golf course to serve the visitors that flocked to the town to ‘take the waters’. Designed by six times Open Champion, Harry Vardon and altered some years later by the legendary golf course architect, James Braid; Llandrindod Wells is a member of the Heart of Wales Golf Breaks group offering affordable golfing holidays in central Wales. Sculptured from the natural contours of the landscape, the upland links golf course provides a true test for golfers of all abilities combining the natural turf banks, hazards and well-protected true running greens for an enjoyable day’s golf.
