WOMEN’S GOLF DAY 2021 SETS NEW GLOBAL RECORDS

A WEEK OF FUN, STARTING WITH RINGING THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE OPENING BELL AND CULMINATING WITH THOUSANDS ATTENDING LIVE EVENTS Now in its 6th year, Women’s Golf Day (WGD) kicked off with an early start yesterday with its first ever event in New Zealand, one of the three new countries to join the WGD Community in 2021. The famous red & white of WGD was everywhere to be seen on social media continuing the tradition that has brought the event to over 1000 officially registered locations in over 80 countries. With #WomensGolfDay reaching 72.4M unique users, generating 87M impressions across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter the June 1st numbers simply speak for themselves! Women’s Golf Day is unique; a one-day sporting and community celebration event, uniting women and girls through golf across the globe for 24 hours straight transcending race, religion, language, geography or economic status. This capped off an exciting week that started with the ringing of the opening bell at the NYSE and WGD Palooza, an online event everyone could attend. "From the first event in Papakura, New Zealand to the last in Princeville, Hawaii, women and girls have been sharing really special moments because of golf,” explains Elisa Gaudet Founder of Women’s Golf Day. “WGD has increased in popularity year after year by engaging men and women and brands. This year we have really seen the power of partnership and what we can accomplish collectively. I am truly humbled by the individuals, locations, partners and organizations who continue to be committed to Women’s Golf Day and thank them for everything that they bring to the game and our events.”

Japan and Argentina were also new host countries for 2021. Golfers still managed to join in the fun, even in places still restricted by COVID-19, joining people around the world showing their love of the game by posting photos using the hashtag #womensgolfday. 2021 has seen another milestone smashed as the total number of participating venues reached 941, exceeding previous records. A staggering number of facilities including PGA TOUR Superstores, Topgolf venues, driving ranges, and traditional golf courses have now hosted Official WGD events. The diverse range of opportunities to learn and play golf offered through WGD undoubtedly contributes to its success. Elisa explains, “Golf is not a one-size-fits-all sport anymore. Women want options and thanks to our retail and brand partners, as well as the locations who host our official events, we can showcase golf at its very best. Women who have never played golf are beginning to see that in the 21st century it is a sport for everyone. This is a really exciting time in golf’s evolution, and we are proud of the role we continue to play in making golf more accessible.” Each year WGD experiences impressive growth in participation figures, and location numbers as well as its social media exposure. This, combined with increasing industry support, indicates the gathering momentum for WGD, so if you have thought about joining this global movement do not delay! Sponsorship opportunities are open for Women’s Golf Day VIP Program and the team is already preparing for the 7th year of this amazing event which will take place on June 7, 2022

England Internationals on course at Blackmoor Golf Club as the Senior Men’s Stroke Play Championship gets underway As the English Senior Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship gets underway at Blackmoor Golf Club this week, the current national champion, Rupert Kellock believes concentration levels will hold the key to a successful defence of the title. Kellock took the honours last year at Woodhall Spa when he won his national title by three clear shots. Now he is eager to repeat his winning performance when the 2021 event tees off on Wednesday at Blackmoor Golf Club and co-host Army Golf Club. Three-times winner Ian Attoe is one of a raft of England senior internationals in the field which also includes, for the first time, the 1996 R&A Amateur champion, Warren Bladon. Sunningdale member Kellock believes the standard of play will be high and the victor will be the person who – just like golden oldie Phil Mickelson in the US PGA Championship at Kiawah island – has a mind as sharp as his iron play for the 54-hole challenge. “As seniors if you don’t put the time and effort into your game then it can go downhill very quickly,” admitted Kellock, a former army officer with the Royal Green Jackets.“You have to work on your game, but also try and maintain concentration.Blackmoor Golf Club Founded 1913 “I think we all enjoyed watching a senior in Phil win the US PGA Championship. The course set-up was fantastic and he showed great levels of concentration to back up his work ethic. “Of course, we are operating at our level of the game which is very different, but the same principle stands true. At our age we might be prone to missing a few more greens because our game is not always consistent. That’s when you have to have a good level of concentration to stay on track. I’m really looking forward to defending this year. I was chuffed and very proud to win my national title last year and I’d love to be able to defend it.

“I’ll give it my best, but there will be a few familiar faces trying to win this thing as well as some newcomers. I played recently with Steve Jensen from Woburn who is making his debut and is a very good player. I noticed Warren Bladon had entered too.” Kellock has made sure that the trophy – first played for back in 1981 – was put to proper use this past 12 months. As it is a rose bowl design, my wife has kept cut flowers in it this year, “said the England seniors’ squad member with a smile. But can he bloom when the events tees off on Wednesday? I’ll be fighting hard to defend the title,” added Kellock. A 54-hole championship is a tough test for any golfer, not just us seniors. “It has been hard for us all to find consistency with the winter lockdown and the poor spring weather. “Sometimes the driving game is good and the irons are off. When the irons are ok, the putter goes cold. “But all the seniors are very keen to get back to competing and this a great opportunity for that. Blackmoor Golf Club Founded 1913 “I’ve played both the Army and Blackmoor courses and they provide a different test. At Blackmoor you need to know where you’re going on a few of the holes to make sure you are not blocked out. "The short holes are excellent. It may be a par 69, but no-one takes it apart. Army can be very tricky, and you will need three solid rounds over the three days to compete.” The English Senior Men’s Amateur Stroke Play Championships will be played from 2-4 June with the final round played at Blackmoor Golf Club on Friday 4th June. Spectators are welcome.

Arrange A Round Partners with Mental Health Campaign,

The Club Talks

Arrange A Round, the web based app that connects golfers who want to play more golf, has announced that it will donate 25% of all first time golf club sign up fees to golfing Mental Health campaign, The Club Talks.

Designed to make it easier for golfers to find playing partners or to expand their social group, Arrange A Round specifically addresses some of the difficulties facing new golfers and new members as they integrate into a golf club. With the Mental Health benefits of playing golf being widely recognised by health professionals and campaigners, Arrange A Round is teaming up with The Club Talks to further its work removing barriers to accessing the game and raise vital funds to support mental health charity C.A.L.M. “I designed Arrange A Round to make it easier for golfers to integrate into club life following my own experiences of joining a new club,” commented Arrange A Round founder Michael Smith. “Increased activity, time spent outdoors and a community of friends with time to talk on the course are some of the factors that make golf such a wonderful sport, but they’re also really important benefits for improving mental health and combatting isolation and loneliness. With such a perfect match in our aims, I’m really excited to work with Ryan and help raise funds for The Club Talks.” The Club Talks is a Mental Health campaign set up by avid golfer and golf media owner Ryan Curtis. After becoming aware of the fact that suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 45, Ryan decided to use his golf media platform and experience of golf’s mental health benefits to take action in support of Mental Health charity C.A.L.M.

“The Club Talks is more than just a talking shop,” commented Ryan. “We want to normalise discussion about mental health and take positive action to signpost young men to where they can get help if they need it. We’re also providing training for Mental Health first aiders in golf clubs who will be on hand to help out anyone in need of support. Golf has the ability to be a transformative activity in people’s lives and we hope that by working with clubs, and with businesses like Arrange A Round who are addressing barriers to entry in the game, we can have a significant impact on the lives of young men.” Michael concludes, “Arrange A Round makes it so much easier for new golf club members to integrate into a club, find new social groups and to play more golf. By working with The Club Talks, we hope more clubs will sign up to a free trial of Arrange A Round. This will enable them to break down some of the barriers to integrating new members, make golf a more accessible option for people who might not find it easy to take that first step, and ultimately raise money to support the fantastic work of The Club Talks.” The Club Talks is primarily funded through Captain’s Charity donations. Any golf club or captain that would like to learn more about getting involved with the campaign should visit www.theclubtalks.com Golfers can sign up to Arrange A Round for free at www.arrangearound.com They can also support the partnership with the Club Talks by introducing their clubs to the benefits of Arrange A Round and the free 6 month trial via info@arrangearound.com

Raymond Johnson’s retirement at Ganton Golf Club A retirement presentation to Greenkeeper Raymond Johnson was held on the 1st May 2021, to celebrate 50 years of outstanding service to Ganton Golf Club, and was attended by Members and Staff. Ray joined Ganton in 1971 as an apprentice and rose to become an invaluable, highly knowledgeable and greatly admired member of the team. Ray has been involved in presenting Ganton for many Regional, National and International championships and matches, including the Walker Cup, Curtis Cup and R&A Amateur Championships; he has also witnessed some ‘big name’ winners at Ganton, including Professional wins for Bernard Gallagher and Nick Faldo, and amateur wins for Jose Maria Olazabal and Rory McIlroy. This year Ganton will host the R&A Seniors Amateur Championship and the Brabazon Trophy.

The appreciation of Ray’s service to the Club was given by Adam Dewhirst, Chair of Green, following which presentations were made to Ray and his wife Gilly by the Captain and Lady Captain on behalf of the Club, and by Past Captain Tony Denness on behalf of the Ganton Trust. The presentations included a specially compiled album of photographs covering Ray’s 50 years at Ganton, with a splendid early-morning photograph of Ray at work on the cover.

Managing Secretary, Gary Pearce, commented ‘’it’s rare that anyone achieves 50yrs service with a single employer, especially in such a physically demanding role as green keeping. Ray’s hard work and loyalty to Ganton has been appreciated by members, guests and his colleagues over the years; he is due a rest, and we all wish him a long and happy retirement’’.

Ray was then invited to ‘cut the ribbon’ to officially open the new Greenkeeping Building and unveiled the permanent commemorative plaque that will be erected on the wall to celebrate this event and his 50yr service. Ray made a passionate speech about his time at Ganton which was received well be the many Club members and staff who were in attendance. Ray commented that he intended to enjoy his retirement with his family, and looks forward to returning to Ganton for a game of golf now and again.

On conclusion of the formal proceedings, Members were invited to inspect the fantastic new green compound and new machinery, which replaces the facilities and equipment that was lost in a fire over a year ago. Green staff were on hand to explain the intricacies of the hi-tech equipment now essential for maintaining a worldclass course such as Ganton.

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club Golf club aims to help

boost the local economy

A South Lakeland golf club is keen to play its part to help the local area bounce back following the coronavirus pandemic. Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club would like to increase its membership but it also wants to help boost the local economy by attracting visitors to the area. It has set up a range of ‘Stay and Play’ offers with local hotels. The staycation packages include accommodation, meals and rounds of golf at the picturesque club, which nestles in the lovely Lune Valley between Casterton and Barbon.

The iconic tee shot at the par 5 10th hole at Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club

It is also creating a special promotional leaflet ‘Destination Kirkby Lonsdale’ - aimed at encouraging people to visit the area and take in a round of golf at the same time. “The idea is to attract golfers with their partners and families for ‘stay and play’ visits to the area,” said club member Robin Ree. “We are in South Lakeland and the Yorkshire Dales National Park and close to the Lake District. This is fabulous walking country and the town of Kirkby Lonsdale has such a lot to offer.” There was a resurgent interest in golf, locally and nationally, said golf club secretary and manager David Towers. “We enjoyed the best first week in April for five years - there is a real hunger for golf,” he said.

Golfers enjoying the sunshine on the 9th hole at Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club

Membership is on the increase and stands at around 380 members, including an active and growing group of lady members. The club has various initiatives planned to attract even more members. Assistant PGA trainee Ellie Broome has boosted the number of juniors, aged from five to 18, at the club to around 60 over the past year by running regular Saturday morning classes and school holiday golfing camps when Covid restrictions allowed.

Ellie Broome, Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club's Assistant PGA Trainee, leading off a group of juniors down the 1st hole

“We are also making contact with local schools to encourage their pupils to come along and are looking to organise an inter schools golf competition here later this year,” said vice-captain Graham Bywater. The club has a six-hole Academy course for use by juniors and those beginning to learn the game. It was vital to attract juniors to the game because they were the next generation, said Mr Ree. “Golf is a sport you start and can play all your life, by yourself or as part of a team,” he said. Ellie Broome and Head PGA professional John Twissell are running two ‘Get into Golf’ beginners’ classes - a ladies group and a mixed group. Meanwhile the club has applied to Golf England to be able to help deliver its Girls Golf Rocks initiative.

The course is also a haven for wildlife, including roe deer, rabbits, hares, stoats and weasels. There is a heronry and swans and various varieties of ducks enjoy the lake. “We have put up around 30 bird boxes this year, which have been used by every wild bird you can think of,” said Mr Ree. The clubhouse includes a bar and restaurant and can be hired as a function room. Drinks and food can now be served outside on the terrace and the club is looking forward to when it can offer hospitality indoors. Other facilities include a swing room with launch monitor to track the ball’s launch angle, flight and spin rate; a short game chipping area and a pro shop selling equipment and clothing.

Mr Ree said the pandemic had been tough on the club, suspending its income intermittently over a full year.

The club runs various competitions including opens which are very popular with visitors and is considering trying to host Pro-Am tournaments.

But the club had taken the opportunity during the lockdowns to provide covers for four of its ten driving range bays and to refurbish the clubhouse. The greenkeeping team had continued to work and had improved the playing surfaces.

A variety of membership deals are available but people can book to play even if they are not members. “We just want people to come to the club to play a game of golf and hopefully they will be impressed and want to play again or join the club,” said Mr Bywater.

It had been ‘frustrating’ not to be able to play golf for so long and there was now a sense of ‘total relief’ that players could get back on the course, said Mr Ree. The club was established in 1906 and has been at its present site since 1991. The 18-hole course measures 6,594 yards and is laid out in more than 160 acres of spectacular countryside. The layout provides two nine-hole loops out and back to the clubhouse. Each of the holes has its own unique character and has four tee options, providing different degrees of difficulty. The River Lune and Barbon Beck both run through the course, which offers amazing views of Barbon Fell and the Howgills.

Mr Towers said the elements that made Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club special were that it was friendly and inclusive, its wonderful location and the quality of the course.

Golf photographer’s ‘pandemic Photographer Andy Hiseman’s new ‘pandemic portfolio’ shows that British golf’s spirits remain undimmed even during the current virus outbreak. Over 100 new photos taken under COVID-19 conditions at UK golf clubs have been added to the gallery at www.hisemanphoto.com, in a collection which explodes with colour, personality and beautiful ‘magic hour’ sunset and sunrise images of golf courses. In 2020, while Mother Nature – oblivious to the virus – supplied a succession of wonderful skies, greenkeepers made the most of the quiet conditions to provide immaculate playing surfaces which Hiseman captured on camera. And between lockdowns golf clubs were a haven for golfers whose faces were lit by expressions of joy and relief at being let loose on the golf course again.

portfolio’ of images

Even if only temporarily. Hiseman travelled the UK between April and October 2020 to capture the best sights at golf clubs around the country. “I became familiar with sleeping in my car” said the photographer. “No hotels open, you see. I usually regret not being a six-footer, but not in 2020. “COVID meant I was often photographing golf courses without any golfers on them, which is a lot easier! But as the rules were relaxed the golfers gratefully returned, and I think the ‘elbow handshake’ is probably the defining image of golf during COVID times.” Hiseman, whose day job is at an advertising agency, is never happier than when out on a golf course with his camera. “Photographing golf clubs is my personal passion. As we all know there is no more beautiful place to be, when the weather’s good, and a lovely golf course photograph restores the spirit.”

Farleigh caps off record-breaking year

with two 59 club awards

Farleigh Golf Club’s general manager, James Ibbetson, is celebrating a remarkable 12 months in charge of the Surrey club after being named Golf Manager of The Year in the prestigious annual 59club golf customer service awards. The 27-hole venue in Warlingham was among a select few of the UK’s leading golf clubs and resorts to be rewarded and recognised for their standards of service at the virtual ‘Industry Oscars’ which went live online on Wednesday, March 24. Hosted by BBC presenter Dan Walker, Farleigh picked up two awards for its achievements and continued level of service, despite the unprecedented circumstances of the past year. The pandemic hasn’t halted Farleigh’s ambition to be one of the most highly-regarded golf clubs in Surrey, with Ibbetson leading the club through three forced closures, reopenings and the ever-changing government restrictions to achieve record membership numbers and also the my59 Ultimate Service Excellence award. The award winners are determined by scores collected from 59club’s impartial mystery shopping team, which evaluates the experience afforded to visiting golfers and prospective members collectively, in accordance with objective industry-leading benchmarking criteria. Ibbetson has managed to keep up the Farleigh ethos of making customers ‘feel better when they left than when they arrived’ while keeping them and his team safe through a number of Covid protocols introduced at the club, both on and off the course.

Farleigh successfully capitalised on the UK golf boom with a number of innovative marketing campaigns, leading to a waiting list being introduced for its full seven-day memberships. The club also places an emphasis on membership retention and satisfaction and has impressed with its regular communication with members throughout the lockdowns with two newsletters per week – keeping them engaged and stimulated and still getting value from their membership despite not being able to physically use the facilities. The regular content included course management tips from the PGA professionals on how to play all 27 holes at Farleigh, drills that members could practise at home, fitness videos, course updates from the greenkeepers, as well as cooking recipes from the club’s chefs. One Farleigh member said: “I would like to compliment Farleigh on the regular newsletters and updates and general communications we receive as members. “I happened to be chatting to a friend who is a member at a nearby club, and they were astonished when I told them everything that is going on – the support for members and the general feed of news from the club. I think he was very envious and surprised at how much the club management and staff are doing to keep communications channels open.” Ibbetson joined Farleigh in November 2019, so only had four months in charge of the club in ‘usual’ circumstances before the pandemic hit.

“We have an incredible team at Farleigh which always goes the extra mile to make people’s experience at the club as memorable as possible. The way everyone has adapted over the past year has been nothing short of remarkable and they deserve all the credit they get. Everyone has played their part and it’s fantastic to receive this kind of recognition to show that the hard work pays off.” Farleigh was nominated for five awards in total with Josie Swift also nominated for the Food and Beverage Manager of The Year Award, Paul Babbage nominated for Golf Retail Manager of The Year and the club’s PGA professionals being nominated for Golf Operations Team of the Year. Renowned for its beautiful surroundings, highquality layout of its John Jacobs-designed course, as well as its unrivalled year-round course conditions with the ‘Farleigh Guarantee’ of no temporary greens and tees, the club has established itself as a prime venue for national PGA tournaments after recently hosting the PGA Fourball Championship and PGA Assistants’ Championship. Its well-presented fairways, USGA-standard greens and extensive range of practice facilities – which include a driving range, putting green and short game area – has seen it build an enviable reputation among golfers of all abilities.

He said: “I can’t really remember what it is like to manage the club on a pre-pandemic normal day. The past year has certainly been a challenge, but one that I am proud that we have come out of the other side stronger and better than ever.

The tournament’s winner, South African golfer Chris Williams, used his SkyCaddie SX500 GPS rangefinder throughout the event, as did Andrew Oldcorn and Peter Baker (T5), plus “At Trevose like many links courses you often face a David Shacklady, Peter Wilson, Clark Dennis blind shot over mounds – for example the approach and Markus Brier (all T7). to the first green if you are out of position.
