Biggs future for Berkhamsted BERKHAMSTED, HERTFORDSHIRE, UK - - Berkhamsted Golf Club has appointed Joe Biggs as the first directly-employed Head Professional in its 130-year history. In a double-first, it is also Biggs’s first job as a Head Pro. He joins Berkhamsted after seven years at the prestigious Roehampton Club where he was Head Assistant Professional. Having arrived last month the 29 year old Derbyshire-born PGA Professional wasted no time in overseeing a major refurbishment of the club’s pro shop, and he has also introduced Trackman technology and Callaway Range balls for the club’s huge 350-yard grass driving range. “I am thrilled to secure my first Head Professional job at one of England’s top 100 golf clubs” said Biggs. “Berkhamsted is one of the true natural wonders of British golf, and I am thoroughly looking forward to helping to forge the future at a place which is so rich in history and heritage. “I must also pay tribute to the members and staff at Roehampton Club, where I spent many happy years: I couldn’t have wished for a better place to be while I learnt my trade as a golf pro. As tends to happen in sport, I know I’ll meet the friends which I made there many times in the future, as Berkhamsted becomes the exciting new chapter in my life.” Outside of golf, Biggs supports Manchester United while also remaining loyal to his roots by following Derby County.
Berkhamsted’s new-look pro shop now stocks Callaway, Titleist, Ping and TaylorMade golf equipment, plus Peter Millar, Galvin Green, Daily Sports, adidas, FootJoy, Skechers and G/Fore golf apparel and shoes, plus an enhanced range of Berkhamsted-branded accessories Biggs will also be developing the club’s Ladies Academy, Junior Academy and various Senior Golf initiatives, as well as running a full lessons programme and acting as host for the club’s society and corporate bookings.
“I owe a huge personal debt to James Whatley, Steve Astle and Aaron Holtom at the East Midlands Golf Academy, at Morley Hayes” said Biggs. “They are the reason I am where I am now. “They trained me from the age of 19, and suggested me for the Roehampton job when I was at the early stage of my career. I cannot thank them enough: they are simply the best in the business.” The club’s popular previous long-standing Head Professional, John Clarke, whose tenure covered almost 30 years, continues to coach at Berkhamsted. Berkhamsted‘s Club Manager, Howard Craft, explains why the club selected Joe as its new Head Professional: “Joe’s enthusiasm, drive and hunger stood out among the candidates” he said. “He is exceptionally charismatic, and with his winning personality he has already charmed our members here! The early feedback has been fantastic. “You can also see instantly that he is a very gifted coach, and takes great pride in the level of service he gives. We are delighted with him already.” A scratch golfer by the age of 16, Joe Biggs reached Final Qualifying for The Open Championship in 2011 while still an amateur. He turned pro at age 19, and at Roehampton Club he carved a reputation as one of the capital city’s most popular and able young golf coaches.
Berkhamsted Golf Club, which is rated among England’s top 100 golf courses, is laid out on common land in Hertfordshire’s largest expanse of natural gorse and heather, with over five miles of bridleways and pathways running throughout the golf course and its huge 560-acre estate, full of natural beauty. Situated on a densely-wooded hilltop above the medieval market town of Berkhamsted, the golf club is situated north west of central London, close to the western boundary of Hertfordshire. Easily accessible from the A41, five miles west of Hemel Hempstead and just 15 minutes from M1 Junction 8 (St Albans), Berkhamsted’s unforgettable 18 holes are a magnet for golfing aficionados from across Great Britain, Ireland and Europe.

Carden Park Estate Appoints Its First Female Golf Club President, Anne Dawson Carden Park Estate, situated within the picturesque Cheshire Countryside and home to two legendary championship golf courses, has announced Anne Dawson as its first ever female golf club President. Anne, who is local to Chester, originally joined the club as a founding member back in 1995, when she had only played a couple of games of golf. Since then, Anne has helped the club to go from strength to strength and, in 2000, she was appointed captain of the ladies’ team. Speaking on her new Presidency, making history for the club, Anne says: “Carden Park always encourages and welcomes women to play golf on an equal footing with men. Being elected as the first female club President is not only a huge personal honour for me, but it also speaks volumes for how strongly the club values diversity. Today, the game is far more inclusive.”
Nestled among acres of picturesque nature, Carden Park’s two award-winning, championship golf courses bring the very best of countryside play. Famously designed by the great Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve, the Nicklaus golf course at Carden Park is a must for all golfing enthusiasts. As players tee off and make their way around the estate, golfers neighbour dramatic views of the rolling Cheshire hills, making for an exciting game. Following a round, golfers can unwind in Jack’s Bar located within the golf Clubhouse or for those looking for longer stays, the hotel offers a selection of Golf and Spa breaks which allow guests to enjoy the award-winning, five-star spa with a much-deserved rejuvenating treatment.
Under her new presidency, Anne will be responsible for supporting club members and managing the day-to-day activity of the club. Primarily, she will encourage members, men and women, to enjoy the game, play to their potential, while helping to steer the club’s leadership to greater fortunes in the future. Anne continues: “I feel very proud to have been elected by my fellow members to be the club’s President for the next three years. We have two sensational courses, an active and passionate membership and a wonderful team behind the scenes, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards. At the heart of it all is the phenomenal Carden spirit. I will work hard to safeguard that positive energy. Carden should be an escape, particularly as we navigate the intense challenges brought on by the pandemic.” At the handover ceremony, Head PGA Professional, David Llewllyn thanked Anne for all her hard work over the years, adding that ‘she has truly earnt’ this role as President.

GOLFERS EYE UP THE MANOR HOUSE AS CASTLE COMBE IS NAMED THE PRETTIEST VILLAGE IN THE UK Golfers have even more reason to be attracted to The Manor House, Wiltshire, after the village it is situated in, Castle Combe, has been crowned the prettiest village in the UK.
“We’re incredibly proud of our surroundings and location, but we want to make sure that the product we offer is just as good. Our hotel and golf course are exceptional and blend seamlessly with the scenery to offer a special experience in the Cotswolds.
A Welsh cottage company, FBM Holidays, conducted research looking at more than 160 places across the UK to collect data to determine the prettiest towns and villages in the country.
“Our greenkeepers work tirelessly to make sure that the course is just as impressive as the village it is situated in. And with exceptional course conditions all year round, particularly at the moment where it’s looking immaculate, they deserve so much credit.”
Each town and village was scored on multiple ranking factors, including how many awards it has and the number of Instagram hashtags. How many times it featured in articles about the UK's prettiest places, towns or villages was also taken into consideration, as was its local National Trust sites and how many Google images of it were available.
In addition to the golf course, The Manor House estate also encompasses the luxury 14th-century stately hotel, home to a Michelin starred restaurant, al-fresco dining terraces and a dedicated gin bar, as well as the cosy 12th-century country pub which sits in the heart of the village.
The data was then ranked to reveal the overall top 10 prettiest places to visit in the UK, with Castle Combe topping the charts. Already boasting an enviable reputation among avid golfers, the delightful 18-hole championship course, immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the Cotswolds with 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside as a backdrop, offers some of the most idyllic scenery which can be seen on an English golf course. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the mature oak and beech trees that line the carefully manicured fairways, together with the immaculate greens and the River Bybrook meandering through the middle, bring both drama and beauty to the 6,500-yard parkland course, which is rightly considered one of the best in the South West. Golf Club Manager, Andrew Ryan, said: “We always knew that we were lucky enough to be located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country – but to be named number one is something quite extraordinary.

Avoid slow play!
With The Tee-Minus® Lost Golf Ball Timer Slow play on the golf course is usually a habit that a golfer acquires over time, as he or she acquires bad habits. Or it can be the result of the golfer never having been taught proper golf etiquette. 2019 saw a new rule come into play. The time allowed to search for a lost golf ball was reduced to 3 minutes. The Tee-Minus Lost Golf Ball Timer assists golfers in finding their misplaced ball and also enabled them to comply with the new rule, 18.2a in the R & A Rules of Golf. 18.2a states that a player is allowed three minutes to search for his or her ball before it becomes lost. (1) When Ball Is Lost. A ball is lost if not found in three minutes after the player or his or her caddie begins to search for it. If a ball is found in that time but it is uncertain whether it is the player’s ball: The player must promptly attempt to identify the ball and is allowed a reasonable time to do so, even if that happens after the three-minute search time has ended.
This includes a reasonable time to get to the ball if the player is not where the ball is found. If the player does not identify his or her ball in that reasonable time, the ball is deemed as lost. Designed by a golfer, Derek Wright for the aid of golfers, the Tee-Minus Lost Golf Ball Timer is proven to speed up play and prevent arguments out on the course when someone is deemed to have ‘broken the rule’.
Derek had watched many playing partners unintentionally take longer that the 3 minute limit imposed in 2019, the timer alerts the player when the 3 minute time limit is over as well as holding several of their golfing accessories including tees, ball markers, pitch mark repairer and pencil. Ball Markers can also be personalised with the member’s club or society log making it the perfect competition prize and an ideal stocking filler at Christmas! The user simply rotates the top half of the dome shaped device and a timer is set at 3 minutes, alerting them when the time is up! The Tee-Minus Lost Golf Ball Timer has received wonderful reviews and has become a trusty addition to many golfer’s bags… who all now comply with rule 18.2 a!

Bowood Park Going From Strength To Strength Bowood Park is flourishing from the boom in Golf with it’s Green Fee numbers doubling in 2021 in comparison to the less turbulent year of 2018/2019. This has been as a result of increased demand and to what Bowood Park has called a ‘shift in marketing’. Bowood Park has focused its efforts on its presence with online publications and the Social Media channels that they control on a regular basis releasing the latest offers and services they offer. Max Stockwell (Director of Golf) called it a ‘major development’ in the progression of what Bowood Park continues to achieve as a business. Since its introduction to the golfing fraternity in June 1992, Bowood Park has been synonymous with value for money society days and residential golf breaks in our 31 bedroom hotel. The golf course has recently been voted in the top 100 golf courses under £50 and has been built to the highest USGA specifications resulting in excellent year round playability.
The clubhouse and hotel are both contained in one building and poses an impressive presence as you make your way through the entrance on to the driveway. The first and tenth tees sit just a matter of yards from the clubhouse which is perfect for two tee starts for large society/corporate days. Set in 230 acres of rolling hills and woodland, the front nine holes allow you the opportunity to build a score while the back nine holes offer a much sterner test for all levels of golfer. Holes 11, 12, and 13 are arguably the most aesthetically pleasing holes you will play and have been likened to Amen Corner at Augusta National. Our most popular golf breaks consist of one, two or three-night stays which include breakfast and golf. All bedrooms are comfortably furnished with en-suite bathrooms and the majority of the rooms overlook the golf course and surrounding countryside.

“A colt gem”
Hendon Golf Club A Harry Colt Gem Despite its prominent location near to the business hub of the capital of England, the countryside surrounding London is home to quite a few golf courses. A recent trend; the growing love of urban golf has seen golf in a green, countryside setting traded for the grey, stone, inner-city street courses that London offers. It is on the outskirts of London where golf really comes into its own. It is well worth taking the time to visit the region’s selection of golf courses, many of which are designed by some of the world’s most renowned golf course architects. The Harry Colt-designed golf course at Hendon Golf Club is a jewel in the crown of golf near the Capital. The tree-lined rolling fairways of the parkland course represent a true test of golfing and course management skills. Set in the leafy suburb of Mill Hill, North London, the golf club dates back to 1900 when membership was just £10 per year. Since this time, the Club has been constantly evolving in terms of the course and facilities which today make Hendon Golf Club an extremely attractive proposition for an increasing number of members and visitors.
The clubhouse provides outstanding hospitality and numerous dining options, from simple snacks through to full-service dinners. The excellentlyappointed Club Lounge, Spike Bar and large south west facing Veranda with magnificent views across the golf course, offer wonderful surroundings to relax following your round.
Hendon Golf Club is the perfect venue for a society or corporate golf day with an array of golf and menu options to suit all tastes and budgets.
Catering for groups of twelve visitors or more, the Club offers a range of 18, 27 and 36-hole packages which can be tailored to meet the needs of the visiting party. Hendon’s friendly staff team are always on hand to ensure the smooth-running of your event from start to finish and aim to make every golf day at the Club special and a memorable experience for all. The team works with you to ‘custom build’ your ideal golf day with many societies returning year-after-year.

But equally, the area provides access to some of the country’s major attractions and places to visit in close proximity. An undulating golf course set in 120 acres of land, its tree lined fairways require accuracy from the tee. With three of the four par 3’s being uphill it makes them difficult holes. The fast sloping greens require a gentle touch. The 6579-yard course is one of the finest in the Midlands providing a stern test for golfers of all levels. The mature course offers a serious challenge from beginner to even the lowest handicapper with accuracy, course management and shot selection being critical to maintain a low score. Serving a wide range of beverages and food, from a light bite through to a more substantial meal for the healthier appetite, these can be enjoyed in the Bar or Restaurant. Also in the area is the declared area of outstanding natural beauty, Chichester Harbour and the 1,000 acre Staunton Country Park, perfect for exploring with the whole family. This area truly is a picture of what is quintessentially British, with stunning natural scenery and sleepy coastal towns. South Hampshire is also home to a number of high quality golf courses, of which Waterlooville Golf Club is hailed as one of the best. With plenty to see and do, its not surprising that avid golfers, with their families, and touring golfing societies are flocking to the area in droves to enjoy the beauty of the area. Originally laid out in 1907, the course at Waterlooville underwent a series of improvements in 2019. Projects included the implementation of a new irrigation system with Topturf replacing the previous irrigation with a modern system, allowing greenkeepers to water a greater area whilst minimising water wastage - keeping the playing surfaces at peak condition all season. This then culminated in Waterlooville being Hampshire Golf Club of the year by Your Golfer Magazine. The £240k project saw the installation of new pipework, as well as a new pumphouse featuring two pumps. Durabunker were also instructed by the club to renovate twenty-three of the course’s bunkers. Twenty-three bunkers were then renovated with two of the larger bunkers being split into two new bunkers each - a positive feature giving definition and shape to the holes. The facilities at the club are phenomenal; this includes a fully stocked pro-shop that sells all the top brands in golf, a practice ground to warm up on and a warm and welcoming clubhouse. The main lounge at Waterlooville Golf Club is ideal for hosting a range of events of any size, with delicious food prepared fresh on site. The South of Hampshire really is incredibly beautiful, and a wonderful place to explore with plenty for the family to see and do, as well as high standard golf courses ideal for society tours. Waterlooville Golf Club has had such a high level of investment, which demonstrates their dedication to providing well maintained greens and tees all year round. It then meanders to the middle of the golf course where views of the National Park countryside and Milford Estuary can be enjoyed.
On April 3rd 2019 the club held the opening ceremony and competition to celebrate the redesign of the signature 18th hole. ‘Fountain View’, the new eighteenth hole at Milford Haven Golf Club was formally opened by a group of rugby players from the current Welsh national team and led by Welsh rugby legend Scott Quinnell. The opening was followed by a Texas Scramble where some of the Welsh heroes played in groups alongside existing Milford Haven members.
The Welsh Rugby Stars open the new 18th at Milford Haven. For the development of the 18th, Milford Haven’s management team obtained the architectural services of well-known and experienced course developer, Marc Westenborg who set about utilising the natural landscape which encompassed the existing green. Marc added a water feature adjacent to the Pine trees to create indecision as to taking the driver or laying up and also added two new bunkers to guard the front left hand side of the putting surface. The new 18th at Milford Haven represents a challenge to golfers and calls for a few decisions to be made when standing on the 18th tee!

If you require a golf clubs, trolleys, caddies or catering for your group this can also be arranged at the time of booking with competitive rates available to regular visitors as well as first time guests.
A proud history and bright future The Gowf Field of Loudoun dates back to the private gowf field of the Loudoun family; with gowf having been played on the land for over 400 years. It is believed that the land has never been under a plough, therefore the turf at Loudoun is unique and probably among the finest of any inland golf course. Golf on the land in Gaston dates back to as early as 1908. When in 1960, the Countess of Loudoun died; the estate was divided to form part of the Loudoun Gowf Club that can be enjoyed today. Later, in 1966 work began on the clubhouse to be formerly opened one year later, in 1967. Today, the comfortable clubhouse surroundings are the home to tales of what might have been, as well as well stocked bars and excellent dining options.
Since 1974, most expenditure has been on the course itself with investment in the tools and fertilisers needed to keep the course in the most pristine of conditions. However, in recent years, the golf course has taken a new look with tress lining the fairways and changes to the shape of some of the holes. The greens are larger than they had previously been but still present a stern test for all levels of golfer.
Why not see for yourself? Ayrshire and the surrounding terrain encompasses arguably the finest collection of links golf courses in the world and with quality accommodation, fine dining, heritage and charisma on its doorstep offers a truly unique experience. Boasting spectacular views over the River Clyde, the great facilities on offer in the region are coupled with the region’s close proximity to the centre of Glasgow where you can choose from a host of accommodation and entertainment providers.

Castle Park Golf Club
Edinburgh is a city famed for its sense of humour, fun and friendliness; themes that seem to have diffused into the local people who inhabit its surrounding areas. Castle Park Golf Club, located just 20 minutes from the historic city centre, seems to personify these traits, offering unforgettable golfing experiences to visitors that they have been unable to keep to themselves! With glowing reviews, the club referred to as the “Gleneagles of the south”, has been rapidly growing in membership owing to its quirky layout and impeccably maintained grounds Edinburgh is a stunning city, overflowing with energy and tradition alike. With a history stretching back as far as the 12th century, the Scottish capital has both a splendid medieval old town, and a Georgian new town providing the perfect balance between culture and modernisation. With an impressive castle, and a mythical dormant volcano (Arthur’s Seat) looming over the city, Edinburgh has earned its place as the place to visit in Scotland. The Castle Park Golf Club, however boasts a local castle much smaller but with equal if not greater fascination. Yester Castle, built only a century after Edinburgh’s Castle, is home to the eerie underground Goblin lair, said to be used by a Scottish Knight for sorcery. Evidently the area is not short of places of interest, and would make the ideal spot for a long weekend away, incorporating; golf, culture, exploration and shopping.
The course itself, is a tale of two halves with an 18-hole course made up of two nines, each with their own personalities. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Lammermuir Hills, with stunning views and serenity, this course is one that is bound to make you smile. If the course itself wasn’t enough, the incredibly friendly and welcoming staff, based in a newly refurbished clubhouse, will ensure that your day out is one to remember.
The course is both tranquil and incredibly accessible, meaning that any prospective golfing tours need not travel for hours to finally find some peace and quiet. The course provides a sense of shelter from the chaotic nineto-five life of the modern man, allowing him (or her) to focus on their game and keep chipping away at their handicaps. Reviews of the course nearly always praise the impeccably maintained greens and tees, and the rate at which people can’t wait to return to play the course again and again, is testimony to the hard word the club has done in recent years to provide an outstanding golfing experience. The course hosts a range of competitions, providing a challenge to golfers of all levels and comes with a brand-new driving range. With a cluster of high standard golf courses neighbouring Castle Park Golf Club, this area would make an ideal place for any touring golf societies. Mark our words, Castle Park Golf Club is one that really sticks out above others in its area, and is one to watch over the coming years, as more and more people catch wind of the incredible experience available there all year round.
