Looking back on 2020 you could be easily excused for thinking that the pandemic has been a total disaster for the golf industry. In fact, many of the clubs and courses across the UK have been using this time to make various improvements to their courses and facilities. Clubs such as Bentham in Cumbria have been proactive during this time by investing heavily in course improvements as well as adding a new look pro shop. Equally golf tourism has also been highlighted with Warwickshire based golf tourism company “Golf To A Tee” being voted England’s best outbound golf tour operator for 2020. The above are just two examples of how the golf industry as a whole has been tireless in the face of very difficult times. Within this issue you will find various success stories from clubs and organisations across the UK in order to give you some good news at the end of a very testing year for everyone. We hope that you enjoy the club reviews and articles in our Winter issue and let’s hope we can all regroup next year and get back to some kind of normality. Wishing all our readers and contributors are very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year from all of us at Your Golfer Magazine.

The Rushcliffe Golf Club – Juniors’ 50th anniversary year in 2021
The Juniors at Rushcliffe Golf Club are looking forward to their 50th anniversary in 2021. The year will be marked over 20 events and competitions to recognise this milestone, culminating with a Rushcliffe Juniors verses Notts Union of Golf Clubs Past Captains match in July. Rushcliffe has a long tradition in supporting its Junior section, with two boys reaching the Professional ranks within the last 10 years. The current Boy’s Captain, Adam Bexon, has just been selected to be the NUGC Boys Under 18 Captain for 2021. And, despite the disrupted 2020 season, Adam was successful in qualifying for the Robert Rock Tour event, which is taking place in Ireland in Summer 2021.

R&A Covid Fund As a result of Teesside Golf Club's successful Covid Fund application from England Golf as part of the overall R&A Covid fund, this allowwed the club to bring forward planned drainage projects to increase the playability of the course and memebrship retention as a result. Part of the course is built on the old river bed so drainage is critical and the application allowed this to happen. From the pictures you can see the clearing of the waterways to allow greater volume to be removed from the course and away by removing the debris from the waterways. This project took 10 days and the benefits from the activity will ensure improved drainage and course conditions.

Entries open for
gender-neutral 2021 Berkhamsted Trophy BERKHAMSTED, HERTFORDSHIRE, UK - - Entries are now open for the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy, which will be the world’s first elite-level amateur event where both male and female golfers compete for the same trophy.
The club originally made its landmark decision to allow men and women to compete alongside each other equally in January 2020. At the time, R&A Chief Executive Martin Slumbers said: “We are supportive of initiatives, such as this by Berkhamsted, which encourage women to compete and play golf at all levels of the game.”
The three-day tournament will take place from Thursday 8th to Saturday 10th April 2021. It was previously scheduled for April 2020 but was postponed following the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month Berkhamsted made a public commitment to the R&A’s Women In Golf Charter. The changes to The 61st Berkhamsted Trophy form part of that commitment, as do pledges to create a new national tournament aimed at elite junior girl golfers, and a concerted effort to attract more female golfers aged 35-54 to the sport.
The 61st Berkhamsted Trophy will be a 72-hole scratch stroke play tournament with a cut after 36 holes, with the top 50 competing for the Trophy over 36 holes on the final day. The tournament is limited to 104 entrants, with a straight ballot on handicaps. This is expected to fall between scratch and +1. Entries are invited to this ground-breaking event via the Berkhamsted Golf Club website at www. berkhamstedgolfclub.co.uk/2021_entry. The club expects up to 25% of competitors will be female. Before its postponement earlier this year, a high number of elite female amateurs had already entered. The 61st Berkhamsted Trophy will deploy a flexible teeing system, after consultation with both The R&A and England Golf to ensure that both sexes compete on an equal footing. It will be eligible for World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®) points for both men and women. The Trophy has traditionally been seen as the season-opening 72-hole event for elite male amateurs in the UK, played on Berkhamsted’s highly-regarded natural heathland golf course. In going gender-neutral it is hoped that other elite amateur events will also soon open up their entry lists in a similar way.
“We are not afraid to challenge the status quo here” said Howard Craft, Club Manager. “There is much talk in golf about creating change, but the pace at which things actually do change in the sport can be frustratingly slow. “It is unsustainable, in the long term, for golf to continue to keep men and women apart like it has historically done. We may be the first, but hopefully we won’t be the last major national amateur event to go gender-neutral.” Nigel Edwards, England Golf Performance Director and Team GB Golf leader in the 2021 Olympics, said: “As the country’s governing body for male and female amateur golfers, at England Golf we are delighted to support Berkhamsted Golf Club’s forward-thinking initiative in making the prestigious Berkhamsted Trophy a mixedgender event.” The Berkhamsted decision has also been welcomed by Elaine Ratcliffe, Captain of the 2021 Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup team. “I applaud Berkhamsted for their forward thinking, and I am delighted to have been asked to help set up the golf to provide an equal test for both men and women during the event” she said.
To enter the 61st Berkhamsted Trophy, please visit www.berkh
Esther Strous, County Development Officer of Hertfordshire Golf, said: “It is truly amazing that this massive step forwards is happening at Berkhamsted Golf Club right here in Hertfordshire. What an exciting time for golf. I expect clubs across the world will now take a look at their own elite events, now that Berkhamsted has set this example.” The club recently engaged Peter McEvoy OBE, the unbeaten Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Captain and amateur golf icon turned course architect, to consult on its golf course, and it was McEvoy who initially brought the idea to the club. “I am thrilled that Berkhamsted Golf Club has made this move, and to have such enthusiastic support from The R&A and England Golf is the icing on the cake” said McEvoy. “Berkhamsted is a superb test of golf and particularly course management skills. It will be fascinating to watch men and women compete for the same Trophy on such a magnificent golf course.” McEvoy is a former Berkhamsted Trophy champion himself, with Tour golf stars including former world #1 Luke Donald, double-Major champion Sandy Lyle and European Tour winners Andy Sullivan, Tom Lewis and Graeme Storm all lifting the historic trophy before finding success among the professional ranks. Joss Gosling, the 28 year old winner of the 60th Berkhamsted Trophy, held in 2019, will now defend his title in April 2021. He said: “I believe strongly in inclusion and equality throughout our game, and I know that the majority of my fellow male competitors feel the same. As a competitor, I welcome Berkhamsted’s decision. The fact that an event as prestigious as the Berkhamsted Trophy has made this change will go a long way in showing people that golf is a game for everyone.
“I am looking forward to competing, after a year’s delay, against the best female amateur golfers out there. See you all in April!” 22-year old Alice Hewson is one of Berkhamsted Golf Club’s most successful female members. In 2019 she became the first Englishwoman to play a competitive tournament round at Augusta National, in the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur, and after turning professional last summer she won the first event she entered on the Ladies European Tour – the Investec South African Women’s Open in March 2020. Alice said: “I am so proud of my home club for embracing equality. I hope the public will be able to come and watch this year’s Berkhamsted Trophy, to see the very best amateur golfers of both sexes on a fantastic golf course.” The famously bunker-free Berkhamsted Golf Club is rated by many as being among England’s Top 100 golf courses. It is laid out on common land in Hertfordshire’s largest expanse of natural gorse and heather, with over five miles of bridleways and pathways running throughout the golf course and its huge 560-acre estate, full of natural beauty. Situated north west of London, close to the western boundary of Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted Golf Club is easily accessible from the A41, five miles west of Hemel Hempstead and just 15 minutes from M1 Junction 8 (St Albans).

Playgolf Group exceed expectations
A
laying ground for further growth
fter a year like no other, Playgolf Group are pleased to report record returns on their golf courses, part of the group’s four owner/operated golf and leisure venues. All courses - in Leatherhead, Colchester, Bournemouth and Addlestone – have seen an upswing in membership, revenue and usage. Even after 77 days of lockdown in the Spring, numbers have sprung back, beyond expectation. For example, The Leatherhead Club has seen a 40% year on year increase in new members and Playgolf Colchester has seen a 50% year on year increase in golf visitor footfall.
focused solely on growing golf participation”. Although the Playgolf Group has done exceedingly well with their 81 holes of golf, like other venues, their additional activities, such as hospitality facilities have found the going tough. Mr Saud added: “There is no doubt the rest of our business has been challenging, with hospitality and gym turnover struggling. But this is a symptom of lockdowns, and once the world is over COVID, then we will revert to stronger revenues in these areas too.” Playgolf Group have four venues, with a combination of golf courses, driving ranges, a gym, restaurants and hospitality facilities at venues in Essex, Surrey & Dorset.
Playgolf’s Company Director, Ali Saud said: “All of our courses have seen a surge in membership and visitor footfall. It has given us the financial freedom to invest heavily in each, improving them over the winter, to make playing golf on every hole even more enjoyable. In the short term, the group is

Keeping In The Swing
The year of 2020 has been incredibly challenging for all of us for obvious reasons but Citizen Golfing Society did manage to go out and have a couple of rounds of golf before their annual end of season event which took place at the Vale Golf and Country Club. In late June they competed in a round at the Windmill Golf Course in Coventry, which saw 16 players take to the course. This was a really good number and probably due to the excitement about having a game of golf as a distraction given everything happening in the real world. In mid -July a second round was arranged at Stonebridge Golf Course, but the numbers were significantly reduced for this with only 4 players turning out. The society normally like to have three or four rounds each year prior to the end of season event, this would normally give them some scores to take the final day with a Fedex Cup style scoring system for that event. As they could not achieve this they decided that the end of season event would be a tournament with everyone starting at the same place so anyone could win. On Friday 18 September the event happened and ICT Project Analyst and Digital Developer Anthony Harris was named the winner by scoring 41 points and beating a guest player by one shot. A special mention must also go to newcomer Nigel Mukarati. Last year you may remember that Citizens Chief Executive Kevin Rodgers scored an albatross, which Nigel tried to match, but managed an eagle instead – three shots on a par five.
Overall they raised £985 which they give to charity or a chosen beneficiary and this year it was donated to their colleague Mel Ashley who is an HR advisor and is funding her own cancer treatment. Anthony knows Mel quite well and in his speech he said “It’s nice to help anyone and it’s extremely heartwarming that we can help one of our own members of staff in her time of need.” The Society do hope that normal service will be resumed for next year and that all of us can once again enjoy a good game of golf all year round.

Berkhamsted commits heavily to Women In Golf
Charter
Berkhamsted is also introducing a new series of gender-neutral club competitions, as well as boosting its Ladies Golf Academy and Junior Golf Scholarship programmes, and ensuring that a female voice is always heard in the way it the club is governed.
Berkhamsted Golf Club has made a series of clear commitments towards women’s golf as it becomes the latest signatory of the R&A’s Women In Golf Charter. Highlights include the creation of a new national tournament aimed at elite junior girl golfers, and a concerted effort to attract more female golfers from the 35-54 age group. Earlier this year the golf club, which is frequently ranked among England’s Top 100 in the media, committed to making its long-standing Berkhamsted Trophy a mixed-gender event, ending a 60-year male-only tradition and breaking new ground for elite amateur golf worldwide. “The Charter signature process inspired plenty of debate within the club, and we are wasting no time in getting started!” said Howard Craft, Club Manager. “We already had good women’s golf initiatives running here, but you can always do more. These new measures will ensure that an increasing number of female golfers will be playing here over the next few years.”
Berkhamsted’s 25 year-old Assistant Club Manager, Ben Hunter, has taken on an additional new role as the club’s ‘Charter Champion’, to make sure that progress is being made. “All of our commitments have clear targets and dates attached, and they will all create positive vibes here at the club. It’s going to be exciting to see what effect each one of them has.” Jackie Davidson, Assistant Director – Golf Development at The R&A, said, “Berkhamsted has demonstrated its commitment to pursuing greater diversity and inclusion in golf by signing up to the Women in Golf Charter. We are grateful for their support in embracing the need to encourage more women and girls into golf so they can enjoy the many benefits that playing the sport can bring.” Lauren Spray, Women and Girls Manager at England Golf said: “Berkhamsted Golf club has really embraced all aspects of The R&A Women in Golf charter. It has created a clear pathway for women who are new to the game to progress to becoming lifelong golfers”. The club worked closely with England Golf’s Partnership Manager, Matt Draper, as it worked through the Charter signature process “Each time Berkhamsted achieves a target it will have a positive effect, and I’m excited to see what these will be” he said. “The club is creating more opportunities for women to learn, play and volunteer, and I believe Berkhamsted will inspire other golf clubs across the country to challenge themselves in similar ways.” The famously bunker-free Berkhamsted Golf Club is laid out on common land in Hertfordshire’s largest expanse of natural gorse and heather, with over five miles of bridleways and pathways running throughout the golf course and its huge 560-acre estate, full of natural beauty.

The Stratford-upon-Avon based golf holiday and events company, has been voted as ‘England’s Best Outbound Golf Tour Operator’ in the 2020 World Golf Award. Golf to a Tee has proudly accepted one of the most prestigious awards in the golf tourism industry. Sadly, due to the travel restrictions imposed, the event was held virtually, rather than in Dubai as originally planned. Nevertheless, Terry Rawding – Founder and Managing Director of Golf to a Tee was delighted by the news. He was keen to thank the customers and suppliers that voted, and without whom, this would not be possible. He said ‘” We are thrilled to accept this award; it has been a culmination of a lot of hard work. We have always sought to put our clients at the heart of what we do, and this award goes some way towards vindicating this ethos. We are a golf tour operator run by golfers, for golfers and this personalised approach clearly rings true with thousands of people that have experienced GTAT events – each tailored to their needs.”
“Times are tough in travel, but Golf to a Tee is proud of the way in which it has supported al of its clients and suppliers with refunds and clear advice - the way in which it has protected everyone must have been a big factor in wining this World Golf Award.” He added that “Golf to a Tee was started in 2011 when I was away on a golf holiday organised by another company and I felt I could do this better. From the outset I decided we would offer golf holidays you could take with your friends, but also the option to join one of our Escorted Events / PGA Pro hosted golf coaching holidays. We are delighted that we now find ourselves as market leaders of Escorted and Golf Coaching holidays, but we will never lose sight of what is important to use – exceptional golfing experiences”. Versatile Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi 8HD gives Bentham GC peace of mind
This summer, the family run club with its backdrop of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, proximity to the Dales and Forest of Bowland has attracted golf tourists from across the country. Its 'on course' cottages and high-end vacation pods have offered something different and proved hugely popular. The course, too, has seen additional member traffic, prompting the purchase of a deep aerator. For head greenkeeper, Shaun Conway it marks another positive step for the northern club. "I joined Bentham in April during lockdown, which was a little strange to say the least. Initially, my family and I lived in one of the lovely holiday cottages," said Shaun, "so it really was an unusual, but memorable, beginning." "But it's all gone well. Lots of good things are happening; a new practice putting green is almost built; the course is looking sharper and the arrival of the new machine means a huge boost to our aeration programme." "This is my first Wiedenmann. I've known Terra Spikes by reputation but it's the incredible smoothness you notice... when you leave the cab you don't feel shaken up. I actually tried the 'Wiedenmann tea cup test' where you place a full cup of tea on top and set off across a green. I tried mine with a flask cup. Not a drop lost! An unexpected stone halfway through your trial isn't good though, then it definitely spills ‌"
"Immediately after installation we got all tees spiked with 20mm tines to 10cm with 5 degrees of heave. Next day, one of the lads started tackling the fairways to 15cm. You don't need extra spanners; it's a tool free and runs quietly and quickly. The speed is just great‌ it buys peace of mind that the job will get done." "We're a small team, mostly three, but sometimes four. This autumn, when conditions allow, we'll be all over if we can, targeting known wet spots. A network of paths around the course means we can pretty much access all areas. For now, we're operating with 8mm and 20mm tines but next year 12mm tines will come in handy. After the initial phase, the aeration programme going forward is to be out little and often. The speed and easy operation mean every three to four weeks. Even across the summer, we can get some discreet work done without golfers knowing." Bentham Golf Club is supplied by local dealer Balmer's Garden Machinery at Burnley. Balmer's golf and turf machinery sales specialist, Ben Cook, and Wiedenmann UK's demonstrator, Andy Kerr, together did the installation and operator training. Ben Cook said: "The GXi8 gives Shaun flexibility to take advantage of weather windows. Aeration is one of those vital tasks dependent on prevailing conditions. Once the decision to 'go' is made you can get nine greens done in an afternoon."

This then culminated in Waterlooville being Hampshire Golf Club of the year by Your Golfer Magazine. The £240k project saw the installation of new pipework, as well as a new pumphouse featuring two pumps. Durabunker were also instructed by the club to renovate twenty-three of the course’s bunkers. Twenty-three bunkers were then renovated with two of the larger bunkers being split into two new bunkers each - a positive feature giving definition and shape to the holes. Measuring a modest 6,100 yards from the championship, white tees, the Pontardawe golf course represents an excellent challenge for all levels of golfer. The course’s impeccably manicured fairways are extremely well-presented and, in fact, play as well in the winter months as they do during the summer. The gentle inclines and undulations boast some of the most spectacular, panoramic views in Welsh golf. To the North, are the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountain and to the South, the Swansea Valley, Swansea Bay, Mumbles Head and the Bristol Chanel can also be seen on a clear day.
Pontardawe Golf Club prides itself as being the friendliest and most sociable club for all visitors. Facilities include the services of our golf manager, golf shop, practice area, trolley and buggy hire. You will be well looked after in the comfort of the clubhouse by our friendly staff, with their range of fine cooked food, along with a large selections of beers, wines and spirits, whilst reminiscing about your round of golf. Located just ten minutes from junction 45 of the M4 and set on Swansea’s highest point, Pontardawe’s location is a good reason why many society groups return year-after-year. The golf club offer a range of golf day packages combing excellent golf and delicious dining options which can be tailored to meet the needs and most importantly, budgets of the visiting party.
Pontardawe’s professional team will also be on hand to offer their support and advice throughout the day to ensure that the event runs smoothly.
