We offer a variety of Heritage and Scenic railroad journeys. Join us for a classic train ride. Our Valley routes include our runs through the Mount Washington Valley to Conway or Sawyer River that recreate the experience of traveling from town to town by train. The Flume Gorge

In the Western White Mountains, the natural splendor of New Hampshire is on full display. Mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, lush with color in the fall, beckon visitors from around the world, while a variety of manmade attractions, outdoor adventures, and scenic drives and train rides pay homage to the region’s rich history of tourism. Prior to serving as the gateway to adventure, though, the western White Mountains were known for another industry: logging. In the 1800’s and early 1900’s, as many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the area. The impact on the landscape was staggering, with clear cut hills and muddy streams showing the effects of rampant logging. Thanks to the foresight of lawmakers and conservation groups, as well as outcry from the public, this area was saved and revitalized by the passing of the revolutionary Weeks Act in 1911. Many regard this act as the “single most important law in the creation of the national forests in the eastern United States”. Now, visitors can enjoy the grandeur of the White Mountains in many ways. For a stunning drive, head east across the Kancamagus Highway, a 34-mile scenic stretch that connects Lincoln to Conway. If you feel like heading west, drive up over Kinsman Notch. This is the westernmost of the major notches in NH, and features everything from Beaver Cascades and Beaver Pond to the endlessly explorable Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves.

Other regional highlights include the Quincy Bog Natural Area (located in Rumney), a 1.3-mile ecological trail through Quincy Bog, and the J.E. Henry Trail, a 3.2-mile out and back path in Lincoln that runs alongside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River.

Take the road a little less traveled on Route 112 West through scenic Kinsman Notch to the villages of Woodsville and Bath. The road winds along the Wild Ammonoosuc River; take some time to pull over and snap a few pictures of the historic covered bridges you’ll see along the way.

The Covered Bridge Capital c New England! Looking for covered bridges? Look no farther than Woodsville and Bath. Three covered bridges are located within mere miles of one another—cross all of them off your check list! The Bath-Haverhill Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge still in use in the state. It is the only bridge to be erected at this site and includes a covered passageway for pedestrians. The Bath Bridge, in the center of Bath Village, is the longest covered bridge in the state with both sides located in New Hampshire. It features an enclosed pedestrian sidewalk and is also among the oldest. The Swiftwater Covered Bridge is a locally distinctive single span Paddleford truss design built over the Wild Ammonoosuc River. This section of the river was once used to float logs to the local sawmill.

The Ammonoosuc Recreational Rail Trail runs for 19 miles from Central Street in Woodsville to Industrial Park Road in Littleton. Open to biking, walking, horseback riding, X-C skiing, ATVs & snowmobiles. The Ammonoosuc River provides a gorgeous backdrop to this trail. Along the way, the Lisbon Depot is a must see. Bedell Bridge State Park is a 38-acre park located along the Connecticut River. The park was the site of a historic two span covered bridge, the second longest in the country. Explore the 258-mile Connecticut River Byway, known as the natural bridge that unites New Hampshire and Vermont.

Rumney Rocks Climbing Area is the spot to visit if rock and ice climbing are your thing–in fact, this world-renowned location features hundreds of different routes! The Warren Recreation Trail is also a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts looking for variety. Its 4-mile stretch is mountain bike, ATV, snowshoe, cross-country ski, and snowmobile friendly, and eventually connects to the Mount Moosilauke ATV trail system. The most notable (and quirky!) stop here is Warren’s Redstone Rocket, a towering reminder of the Cold War era space race. This rocket is a replica of the booster rocket that lifted Alan B. Shephard, America’s first astronaut, into space on a brief suborbital trip.

For a historical spot in Rumney, look no further than the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House, which housed the founder of Christian Science from 1860–1862. Tours of the interior are available by appointment, but scenic drivers are welcome to stop and take a few pictures of the timeless exterior.

Mount Tecumseh, one of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s 4,000 footers, is the site of the Waterville Valley Resort. Organized skiing began on Tecumseh in the 1930s, with the construction of two Civilian Conservation Corps ski trails. Waterville Valley is surrounded by 770,000 acres of National Forest land and over 100 miles of hiking trails. Waterville Valley is the birthplace of Freestyle skiing, and hosted the first National Open Championships of Freestyle Skiing in 1970. The Indian Head rock profile, also known as Mount Pemigewasset, was named after the Chief of the Pemigewasset tribe. Impressive views of this rock face can be seen from the Indian Head Resort parking lot on Route 3. To access the trailhead, take Exit 34A off I-93 and park in the north lot at the Flume Gorge’s Visitor Center. The great family hike is about 3 miles round-trip.

Easily accessible from I-93, the neighboring towns of Lincoln and Woodstock offer natural wonders and man-made attractions plus scenic train rides. Shops, restaurants, and breweries line Main Street. Lace up your boots for a day on the trails or strap on your skis for a day on the slopes. Cascade Park, located just behind Main Street in North Woodstock, is a tranquil place to relax on the rocks, take a dip in the Pemigewasset River, or enjoy a picnic.

For many visitors, Franconia Notch is the first stop on their journey north. Hikers looking for a shorter, steeper trail can take a trip up nearby Bald Mountain or Artist’s Bluff to enjoy 360-degree views of Franconia Notch State Park and Cannon Mountain. Crawford Notch State Park lies to the east of Franconia Notch State Park, and is known as the birthplace of New Hampshire’s legendary mountain hospitality. This beautiful park serves up 5,775 acres of hiking trails, waterfalls, wildlife, and spectacular mountain views. Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and was once home to Franconia College during the 1960s and 1970s.

Besaw Iron Furnace is an octagonal stone stack visible on the far bank of the Gale River, built with local granite, and is all that remains of this 200-year-old iron smelter. Berlin, located along the Androscoggin River, and known as the “City that Trees Built” was once the center of the papermaking industry. Today, Berlin offers visitors a chance to experience the outdoors by various means, including foot, pedal power, ATV, snowmobile, raft, guided moose tour, and more. Where Routes 2 and 16 meet is Gorham. When the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad arrived in the 1850s, the town became a tourist destination and it remains so today. Interesting shops, fabulous restaurants, and nearby recreation opportunities make it a great place to plan a stay. Jericho Mountain State Park ATV, UTV, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike will enjoy miles of trails and scenic outlooks throughout the park. Pinkham Notch Route 16 travels through this northern mountain pass that separates the Presidential Range from the Wildcat Range. Many hikers choose to start their ascent of Mount Washington from Pinkham Notch, adventurous, experienced skiers test their skills in Tuckerman Ravine, and those on the hunt for a scenic waterfall hike will enjoy Glen Ellis Falls.

The Great North Woods is New Hampshire’s wildest region. From this remote outpost, visitors can explore the northernmost reaches of the White Mountain National Forest, where endless acres await. Take an ATV or snowmobile out on the trail. Pack up your fishing gear and head to a local pond. Raft down a river or climb a mountain. Along the way, you just might encounter the wildlife that this part of Coos County is famed for.

In addition to being home to the magnificent moose, the Great North Woods is also home to Dixville Notch, the tiny town that is first in the nation to cast its votes during the U.S. presidential election. Driving through the notch, take note of the historic Balsams Resort. This is one of the few remaining grand hotels in the region, and while it is shuttered for the time being, its iconic red roofed structure is perfect for a few quick roadside photos on the shores of Lake Gloriette. Beaver Falls is another easily accessible stop for photos, while a hike up to Table Rock yields impressive valley views. Lodging in this region ranges from backcountry camping to rural campgrounds and local inns.

1. Thompson Falls Thompson Falls is a lightly visited sequence of cascades on Thompson Brook and is a 1.1 mile, out and back trail that begins to the left of the lodge at Wildcat Ski Resort. This is a great family and pet-friendly hike perfect for visitors of all ages.

2. Madison Boulder At 83' long, 37' wide, 23' high, and weighing over 5,000 tons, the largest known erratic boulder in New England is also one of the largest in the world! 3. Located between the Lakes and White Mountains regions, Tamworth is a historic town founded in 1766 that encompasses the villages of Tamworth, Chocorua, Whittier, South Tamworth, and Wonalancet. Tamworth is home to Lake Chocorua, White Lake, flowing brooks and rivers, streams and ponds, and the oldest repertory theatre in the United States. When driving Route 16 in Tamworth, it’s difficult to ignore the commanding view of Mount Chocorua with serene Lake Chocorua in the foreground. Be sure to pull over and take a stroll along the wooden bridge to get the perfect photo. You’ll understand why this is one of the most photographed mountains in America. You’ll often see kayakers, canoeists, and swimmers enjoying the refreshing lake. Try to spot New Hampshire’s abbreviation, “NH”, constructed somewhere in the bridge. This section of the White Mountains is scenic and historic and along with the beautiful mountain lakes, and stunning fall foliage, you’ll feel as if you have been transported to a simpler time as you drive by quaint villages with their perfect little white churches, historic stone walls, and old farmland. Be on the lookout for the historic marker in Wonalancet which talks about the history of the Chinook sled dog, which was first bred in NH and is now the state dog. The Ossipee Mountains are now a hiker’s paradise, but this mountain range was once an ancient volcano range. Some popular peaks are Mt. Shaw, Mt. Roberts, and Bald Knob.

The Memorial Arch of Tilton was built in 1882 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is a 55' tall, 40' wide arch made from New Hampshire granite that was inspired by the builder’s trip to Rome. It sits on a hill overlooking the town of Tilton and the Winnipesaukee River and is a lovely spot to take a stroll or bring a picnic lunch.

Rocky Gorge and Lower Falls Rocky Gorge is an easy walk along the Swift River to a footbridge that spans the river. Rocky Gorge has a 10' drop and rapids through the gorge. At Lower Falls, the river drops many feet over smooth granite rocks into a large pool—an ideal place to picnic, sunbathe, and swim.

UPPER GREELEY POND TRAIL This 2.9-mile out & back path is perfect for hikers looking to stretch their legs on a quieter trail. Along the way, keep an eye out for glimpses of the Osceolas. To visit one more gemlike pond, continue south on the trail another 1.1 miles (one way). Moderate.

CHURCH POND TRAIL To access this 2.4-mile out & back trail, park in the small lot opposite the entrance to Passaconaway Campground. The trailhead is accessed through the western loop in the campground and crosses Downs Brook and the Swift River on its way to a small, scenic pond. Moderate. BOULDER LOOP TRAIL The name says it all when it comes to this popular trail close to the eastern terminus of the Kanc. With its forest full of impressive boulders, scenic overlook, and relatively short mileage (roughly 2.8 miles round trip), this hike is the perfect pitstop for road-weary travelers. and owned and operated as a museum by the US White Mountain National Forest Service, this is the only surviving early homestead in the Swift River Valley. Backcountry Camping in the White Mountains To get the most out of your camping experience, it’s important to know what is (and isn’t) allowed; the following provides some specific guidelines. Contact the Forest Service or one of the Ranger Stations in the region (page 111) to determine if any restrictions apply. Some standard restrictions to keep in mind are: n Above treeline, camping is allowed only when there is at least two feet of snow on the ground. n

Great Gulf Wilderness: camping below treeline only, and 200' off the trail or in designated sites along the trail. Camping not permitted beyond the junction of Sphinx and Great Gulf Trails in the direction of Spaulding Lake.

No camping, wood, or charcoal fires within 1/4 mile of any shelter, tent platform, hut, cabin, picnic area or campground. No camping, wood, or charcoal fires in any Wilderness Area. Motorized equipment/mechanical transport (except wheelchairs) is not allowed in any Congressionallydesignated Wilderness Area. In addition, hiking and/or camping groups are limited to no more than 10 people. Camping/fires not permitted within 200' of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail. Camping/fires not permitted within 1/4 mile of Rte. 16, AMC or RMC facilities, Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, Dolly Copp Campground, or Glen Ellis Falls.

October is the perfect time to hike in the White Mountains, as the air is cooler, there isn’t as much foot traffic as in the summer, and the payoff at the top is incomparable! So lace up those hiking boots, grab your camera, and head for the hills!

TABLE MOUNTAIN Bartlett

As part of the longer Attitash Trail, this 4-mile out and back footpath offers scenic views of two colorful mountain ranges. The trailhead is located off Bear Notch Road in Bartlett, just a quick drive from the Kancamagus Highway. Moderate.

WELCH-DICKEY LOOP TRAIL Thornton

This foliage-friendly loop trail is all about rocky ledges and 360-degree views. Over its 4.4 miles, hikers will quickly discover why the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail is one of the most raved about routes in the Whites. Moderate/difficult.

MIDDLE SUGARLOAF Twin Mountain

The 2.6-mile trail leading to the top of Middle Sugarloaf is a great option for families looking to view the Presidential Range in all its fall finery. If you feel like adding a bit more mileage to your hike, you can also summit nearby North Sugarloaf. Moderate.

MT. WASHINGTON BY THE NUMBERS

The peak of Mt. Washington was first seen by explorers off the New Hampshire coast in 1524. Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook, the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit. Today, by foot, car or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible. Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world, who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, Canada, and on a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean!

The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819; today the Crawford Path is the oldest continually maintained footpath in the country. Visitors can drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road or simply leave the driving to the cheerful (and informative) stage guides. The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing railroad, opened in 1869. Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable at any time. The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low, -47°F. Without factoring in the wind chill! With an average July temperature of 49°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below. When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. And don’t forget your camera!

The White Mountain NATIONAL FOREST RECREATION PASS The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the country. With that use comes a large workload to maintain the recreation facilities. As a result, a program is in place to collect fees for recreational use. All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land must display a Recreation Pass where signed. Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round. Recreation Passes are available at area businesses, USFS Information Centers, and the White Mountains Visitors Center. Pack Your Patience Take a deep breath and enjoy

our fresh mountain air and the scent of crisp fall leaves. Enjoy the fact that you’re in the White Mountains and soak in the beauty around you. Staffing shortages exist, and some businesses may have modified operating hours. Pack your patience along with your toothbrush and camera!

Be Safe and Respectful When visiting the White Mountains, please be mindful of your surroundings. Stay on the trail and leave only footprints when taking a hike. If you carry something into a park or attraction, be sure to carry it out. Familiarize yourself with the rules when it comes to camping and ask questions if you don’t know the answers. Be careful around water and on steep ledges—no Instagram post is worth hurting the environment or yourself. Respect the beauty of nature that surrounds you, as well as the staff at your favorite restaurants, breweries, hotels, and attractions. @kileyggg

Moat Mineral Collecting Site | Albany Located on the Eastern side of the Kancamagus Highway, this trail features areas of crystalized granite and volcanic rock that can be collected and brought home to treasure. Mining permits are free but are required and can be found at the trailhead.

Thorne Pond Conservation Area | Bartlett This family-friendly trail system is wonderful for 4-season recreation including mountain biking, snowshoeing, hiking, and swimming. One of the trails loops around Thorne Pond, which is a man-made snowmaking pond. Other trails meander by the Saco River where you can take a dip or do a little sunbathing. It’s also a great spot to enjoy a foliage walk without the crowds. @serendipityobx

Foss Mountain | Eaton While this little gem is beautiful all summer and fall, it’s worth it to make your way here in August during blueberry-picking season. Keep an eye out for the designated blueberry-picking fields that are open to the public. The trail to the top is easy for all ages and the bare, rocky summit is perfect for a picnic and enjoying the 360° views. @littlmoon

The Trails at The Rocks | Bethlehem The Rocks in Bethlehem is known for its Christmas Tree Farm as well as their educational programs on maple sugaring; however, it also has a wonderful trail system spanning its 1,400-acre reservation. The Christmas Tree Trail leads visitors throughout the tree farm with panoramic views of the White Mountains as the backdrop. The Michael A. Gozzo Trail has several smaller trails that highlights the wetlands, apple trees, and beaver pond that is on property. @rmfullerton

Sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate, or maybe you’ve had your fill of fresh air and want to enjoy some of the fun, indoor activities the White Mountains has to offer. Challenge your brainpower at an Escape Room or test your rock-climbing skills at an indoor rock-climbing center. Visit a museum or New Hampshire’s only aquarium! If you’re visiting the area in March, stop by a local sugar shack to see how maple syrup is tapped and boiled, then try some for yourself before bringing home a taste of the Whites!

There are so many great winter-themed events to check out throughout the season! There’s an entire festival devoted to all things chocolate, and also one to the art of snow-sculpting. Kilburn Crags | Littleton This 1.4-mile round trip walk is located on the side of Walker Mountain in Littleton and has stunning views of the Presidential Mountain Range, Cannon Mountain, and a bird’s eye view of the town of Littleton. The trailhead parking lot can only accommodate about 4 cars, so keep that in mind when planning. The summit is at about 1300' so you get a lot of view bang for your buck without a lot of effort.

Bronson Hill Conservation Area | Franconia / Sugar Hill This amazing conservation area has nine trails that are blazed for year-round recreation and is a wonderful spot for those looking to get out in the woods and not gain much elevation. This spot is great for snowshoes, cross-country skis, and hiking boots with crampons. Be sure to take the 1.6-mile Overlook Farm Loop for sweeping views of Franconia Ridge, Cannon Mountain and beyond. Please note that Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust maintains this piece of private property, and that parking is limited. Another parking lot can be found on Pearl Lake Road.

Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge | Jefferson With incredible views of the northern Presidential Range, this wildlife refuge is a rare gem at any time of year, but is especially magical in the winter. There are nine trails to explore within the 166-acre refuge and it is a great option for those looking for a nice winter walk, or a day out on snowshoes or cross-country skis. @stink.pickles @wild_mountainthyme72

Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest | Center Harbor The Chamberlain-Reynolds Memorial Forest is comprised of 157 acres with one mile of waterfront that is part of the Squam Lakes Association. There are four miles of walking trails, several beaches, and a boardwalk trail through a swamp (a very pretty swamp!). The trails range from easy to moderate all with beautiful scenery and varying landscapes to explore. 120 Winter
