Logging was the major industry in the Western region of the White Mountains during the 1800s and early 1900s. As many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the area and are part of the lore of this fascinating region. Beyond the many unique shops, restaurants, and lodging options, visitors today can enjoy scenic train rides, natural wonders, man-made attractions and endless adventures. A must see while here includes a drive across the Kancamagus Highway, the Northeast’s first National Scenic Byway, which begins in Lincoln and travels east for 34 miles to Conway. Kinsman Notch is the westernmost of the major notches that lie between Mount Moosilauke and Kinsman Ridge. The Appalachian Trail crosses at the height of the land and is also home to Beaver Cascades, Beaver Pond, and Lost River Gorge. Quincy Bog Natural Area is located in Rumney and is a 1.3 mile ecological trail through Quincy Bog. Walk the wooden boardwalks and learn about wetlands, vegetation, and aquatic mammals.

J.E. Henry Trail is named for the entrepreneur James E. Henry. The 3.2 mile path runs alongside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River in Lincoln through a privately-owned conservation area open to visitors.

Located in the Baker River Valley, both towns boast unique features. Hidden back roads provide visitors with off the beaten path experiences with access to swimming holes, paddling, tubing, and walking trails.

WARREN and RUMNEY Warren is home to a Cold War era Redstone Rocket, which is said to be the only missile installed in a public park. The missile is a replica of the booster rocket that lifted Alan B. Shepard, America’s first astronaut, into space on his brief sub-orbital trip.

The Warren Recreation Trail is an awesome multi-use, multi-season trail, designed for mountain bikes, ATVs, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and snowmobiles. This 4-mile trail offers beautiful scenery and runs along Black Brook. One of New Hampshire’s Rail Trails, the trail begins on Route 25 in the quaint village of Warren, near the Redstone rocket and eventually connects with the Mount Moosilauke ATV trail system.

Located on the Town Common in Plymouth, the Boy Scout Fountain is one of only two Boy Scout Fountains in the United States. It was gifted to the town in 1923 and was created by a Philadelphia sculptor who used to spend his summers in Plymouth.

Organized skiing began on Tecumseh in the 1930s, with the construction of two Civilian Conservation Corps ski trails. Waterville Valley is surrounded by 770,000 acres of National Forest land and over 100 miles of hiking trails. Waterville Valley is the birthplace of Freestyle skiing, and hosted the first National Open Championships of Freestyle Skiing in 1970. WOODSVILLE, BATH and NORTH HAVERHILL Take the road a little less traveled on Route 112 West through scenic Kinsman Notch to the villages of Woodsville and Bath. The road winds along the Wild Ammonoosuc River; take time to pull over to snap pictures of the historic covered bridges along the route.

The Covered Bridge Capital of New England! Looking for covered bridges? Look no farther than Woodsville and Bath. Three covered bridges are located within mere miles of one another – cross all of them off the check list! The Bath-Haverhill Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge still in use in the state. It is the only bridge to be erected at this site and includes a covered passageway for pedestrians. The Bath Bridge, in the center of Bath Village, is the longest covered bridge in the state with both sides located in New Hampshire. It features an enclosed sidewalk for pedestrians and is also among the oldest.

The Ammonoosuc Recreational Rail Trail runs for 19 miles from Central Street in Woodsville to Industrial Park Road in Littleton. Open to biking, walking, horseback riding, X-C skiing, ATVs & snowmobiles. The Ammonoosuc River provides a gorgeous backdrop to this trail. Along the way, the Lisbon Depot is must see. Bedell Bridge State Park is a 38-acre park located along the Connecticut River. The park was the site of a historic two span covered bridge, the second longest in the country. FRANCONIA Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and was once home to Franconia College during the OMOT 1960s and 1970s. Besaw Iron Furnace is an octagonal stone stack visible on the far bank of the Gale River, built with local granite, and is all that remains of this 200-year-old iron smelter. Courtesy The Frost Place is the former home of poet Robert Frost and is now a museum of literary history that includes memorabilia, 2plytraveller writing workshops, and signed editions of his work plus a ½ mile poetry trail. The New England Ski Museum collects, conserves, and exhibits elements of ski history including a timeline of skiing development from its roots to the start of the shaped ski. SUGAR HILL Known as the “newest” town in New Hampshire, Sugar hill was incorporated in 1962 and named for the large groves of sugar maples located within town limits. The quintessential New England village offers unparalleled views of the Franconia Range, which helped persuade notable folk including actress Bette Davis and novelist Earnest Poole to reside in the area. In 1929, the first resort-based ski school in the country was established on the slopes of a hill in town, providing the initial push to the sport America knows today. The glorious fields of pink and purple lupine flowers bloom in June, making Sugar Hill one of the most scenic places to visit in Northern New England.

Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, the towns of Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods offer year-round outdoor adventure, natural beauty, the Northeast’s highest mountain peak, and boast hundreds of years of hospitality. The historic Crawford Path ranks as the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States. Dating back to 1819, the National Recreation Trail runs from Route 302 in Crawford Notch to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. Bretton Woods Ski Area is home to the Bretton Woods Skyway, the state’s first 8-person gondola. First used during the 2019-2020 ski season, it will be open in the summer months for scenic rides with views of Mount Washington and the Presidential Range.

BERLIN and GORHAM Berlin, located along the Androscoggin River, and known as the “City that Trees Built” was once the center of the papermaking industry. Today, Berlin offers visitors a chance to experience the outdoors by various means, including foot, pedal power, ATV, snowmobile, raft, guided moose tour and more. Where Routes 2 and 16 meet is Gorham. When the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad arrived in the 1850s, the town became a tourist destination and it remains so today. Interesting shops, fabulous restaurants and nearby recreation opportunities make it a great place to plan a stay. Jericho Mountain State Park ATV, UTV, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike will enjoy miles of trails and scenic outlooks throughout the park. Pinkham Notch Route 16 travels through this northern mountain pass which separates the Presidential Range from the Wildcat Range. Many hikers choose to start their ascent of Mount Washington from Pinkham Notch, adventurous, experienced skiers test their skills in Tuckerman Ravine, and those on the hunt for a scenic waterfall hike will enjoy Glen Ellis Falls.

Early visitors to the Mount Washington Valley were captivated and inspired by the mountain landscape, just as today’s visitors are drawn by the scenery and adventure to what the locals simply call “The Valley.” And don’t forget the shopping (tax-free, of course)! 1. Crystal Cascade With a total drop of 100 feet this is a popular and beautiful two segment waterfall. The upper segment is a horsetail approximately 70 feet in height, and the lower section is a 30-foot tall block. The .6-mile RT trail is not steep but is a steady climb. 2. Madison Boulder At 83' long, 37' wide, 23' high, and weighing over 5,000 tons, the largest known erratic boulder in New England is also one of the largest in the world! 3. Presidential Rail Trail Stretches for about 20 miles from Gorham to Hazen Road near the Whitefield airport. CHOCORUA, OSSIPEE, TAMWORTH and EATON CENTER Located between the Lakes and White Mountains regiomns, Tamworth is a historic town founded in 1766 that encompasses the villages of Tamworth, Chocorua, Whittier, South Tamworth, and Wonalancet. Tamworth is home to Lake Chocorua, White Lake, flowing brooks and rivers, streams and ponds, and the oldest repertory theatre in the U.S. Lake Chocorua, in Tamworth, is a picturesque lake with commanding views of the rugged summit of Mount Chocorua. The lake is most noted for its calm, serene setting and its stunning views of the mountain’s bald summit (one of America’s most photographed mountains). Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing are popular recreational activities on the lake. Dog lovers will appreciate the role of Wonalancet in history, for it is here that the Chinook sled dog was developed and raised. This hardy athletic breed was developed for drafting and sled dog racing; Chinook sled dogs were used by Admiral Byrd on his Antarctic expeditions, and later by the Army in search-and rescue missions. It shares its name with the Ossipee Mountains, a range of ancient volcanoes, which border it on the west.

North Conway has made the list in USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Awards. In 2020, North Conway took home the top spot as the “Best Ski Town”, and was in the Top 10 for “Best Small Town for Adventure”

Backcountry Camping in the White Mountains To get the most out of your camping experience, it’s important to know what is (and isn’t) allowed; the following provides some specific guidelines. Contact the Forest Service or one of the Ranger Stations in the region (page 111) to determine if any restrictions apply. Some standard restrictions to keep in mind are: n Above treeline, camping is allowed only when there is at least two feet of snow on the ground. Great Gulf Wilderness: camping below treeline only, and 200' off the trail or in designated sites along the trail. Camping not permitted beyond the junction of Sphinx and Great Gulf Trails in the direction of Spaulding Lake.

No camping, wood, or charcoal fires within 1/4 mile of any shelter, tent platform, hut, cabin, picnic area or campground.

At Lower Falls, the river drops many feet over smooth granite rocks into a large pool—an ideal place to picnic, sunbathe, and swim.

CHAMPNEY FALLS TRAIL is a 3.1 mile out and back trail that brings you to the 70' cascades of Champney Falls. Bring a picnic lunch to the falls and the more adventurous hiker can choose to continue the hike to Mt. Chocorua bringing the total hike to 7.4 miles.

3. Albany Covered Bridge

extends over the Swift River. It is one of a few bridges in the state still open to motor vehicles and pedestrians. 4. The Russell / Colbath House Built around 1831,

and owned and operated as a museum by the US White Mountain National Forest Service, this is the only surviving early homestead in the Swift River Valley. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. 5. Sabbaday Falls A gravel path approximately 1/4 mile, handicapped accessible, leads to a spectacular 45' waterfall and gorge. Please Note: Parking spots on the Kanc during peak season can be scarce. We recommend visiting either early or late in the day.

SOUTH MOAT is on the difficult side of moderate and is about 5 miles out and back. Stunning views of Mt. Washington and Mt. Chocorua from the summit. Need a challenge? Combine this hike with Middle and North Moat to complete the Moat Traverse…just under 10 miles in length. TABLE MOUNTAIN can be accessed from Bear Notch Road, so it is only available to hike from May to October, as the @livesforsummits road closes in winter. Covered bridges are built using a support system that incorporates “trusses.” There are many kinds of trusses, but one of the most wellknown is …

… the Paddleford Truss, named for its designer, 19th century New Hampshire millwright Peter Paddleford—who never patented the design! The Paddleford Truss design was used extensively for most of the 19th century in covered bridges throughout Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

Covered bridges and waterfalls dot the White Mountains landscape and are favorites with visitors and locals alike. There are more than 100 waterfalls in the area and plenty of covered bridges, too—enough to satisfy the most devoted falls or covered bridge spotter. Many of the bridges listed below feature the Paddleford Truss design, including the Bartlett Bridge, the Swift River Bridge, the Flume Bridge (above), and the Honeymoon Bridge.

Peaked Mountain Trail Off Rte. 16 about a half mile south of North Conway village. Excellent views featuring a lake. Moderate. 4 miles. 4 hrs. *Mt. You’ve come to the right place! You can’t get more bang for your foliage buck than to hike up a mountain and see the autumn world spread out below. October is the perfect time to hike in the White Mountains, as the air is cooler, there isn’t as much foot traffic as in the summer, and the payoff at the top is incomparable! So lace up those hiking boots, grab your camera, and head for the hills!

BLACK CAP Intervale

The trailhead for this 2.3-mile trail is 3.5 miles off Rte. 16 on Hurricane Mountain Road in Intervale. The easy trail leads through the Green Hills Preserve before bringing you to the summit with amazing foliage views of Mount Washington Valley.

PINE MOUNTAIN Gorham

While this 3.4 mile out and back hike is on the moderate side, the foliage reward is worth the climb. Chapel Rock is located at the summit, and while it is on the private property of a summer camp, it is accessible and open to hikers in the fall.

MOUNT TECUMSEH Waterville Valley

Waterville Valley Ski Resort is located on Tecumseh, but that won’t get in the way of beautiful viewpoints which showcase the incredible foliage. This trail is on the easier side of moderate and is 5.2 miles out and back. Access the trailhead on Tripoli Road.

The peak of Mt. Washington was first seen by explorers off the New Hampshire coast in 1524. Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook, the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit. Today, by foot, car or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible. Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world, who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, Canada, and on a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean!

The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819; today the Crawford Path is the oldest continually maintained footpath in the country. Visitors can drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road or simply leave the driving to the cheerful (and informative) stage guides. The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing railroad, opened in 1869. Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable at any time. The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low, -47°F. Without factoring in the wind chill! With an average July temperature of 49°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below. When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. And don’t forget your camera!

The White Mountain NATIONAL FOREST RECREATION PASS The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the country. With that use comes a large workload to maintain the recreation facilities. As a result, a program is in place to collect fees for recreational use. All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land must display a Recreation Pass where signed. Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round. Recreation Passes are available at area businesses, USFS Information Centers, and the White Mountains Visitors Center. Peaked Hill Pond | Thornton This lovely pond is on White Mountain National Forest land and is accessible by a 1.7 mile hike up an old road. It is an easy trail for kids and the pond is a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch, quick swim, or to cast in your fishing line. @tom_samwise_emily

Cascade Path | Waterville This 3-mile round trip trail begins at the Snow’s Mountain parking lot in Waterville Valley. There are some lovely views of the Waterville Valley Ski Area as you descend into the woods. The destination is a set of two waterfalls that are perfect for soaking in or just to sit and relax by.

Livermore-Sawyer River Road | Crawford Notch This walk in the woods will bring you to a river, a camping site, and an abandoned logging town! Hike about 1.5 miles up the road and you will find cellar holes, and other evidence of where the lost town of Livermore used to be a thriving mill town. Beyond that, you will come to Sawyer River which is a great spot to take a dip and pitch a tent on one of the camping platforms.

Georgiana Falls | Lincoln This 2.5 mile out and back hike starts on Hanson Farm Road off Rte. 3 and brings you to the scenic and relatively obscure Georgina Falls. The falls themselves are about 30 feet in height and are well worth the visit.

Few places on earth have New Hampshire’s unique combination of fall weather, variety of tree species, and the rugged terrain that makes for such spectacular “leaf peeping”. Cathedral Ledge | Conway The gate at the base of the auto road is closed for the winter season, but parking is allowed at the gate and then hikers and snowshoers can walk up the 1-mile road to the 1,159-foot summit of Cathedral Ledge. Walter Newton Natural Area | Plymouth Parking is limited, so opt for a plan B in case the lot is full! This is a great beginner winter hike as the trail is an easy 1.6-mile loop that features the beautiful Rainbow Falls at approximately the halfway point. There are benches located at the falls and surrounding the marsh that is also on the nature preserve property. @and_cookies_fortune

Lonesome Lake | Franconia Notch This 3.1-mile loop trail is on the moderate side of difficult. Your end destination will be Lonesome Lake, a 12-acre lake with stunning views of Franconia Ridge. The trailhead is accessible from the Lafayette Place Campground parking lot. 120 Winter
