SCAN ME
In the Western White Mountains, the natural splendor of New Hampshire is on full display. Mixed coniferous and deciduous forests, lush with color in the fall, beckon visitors from around the world, while a variety of manmade attractions, outdoor adventures, scenic drives, and train rides pay homage to the region’s rich history of tourism.
Prior to serving as the gateway to adventure, the western White Mountains was a hub for the logging industry. At its height in the 1800’s and early 1900’s, as many as 19 logging railroads were in operation throughout the region. With the advent of the Weeks Act in 1911 and the subsequent creation of White Mountain National Forest in 1918, a recreation paradise was born.
Today, visitors can enjoy the grandeur of the White Mountains in many ways. For a stunning drive, head east across the Kancamagus Highway, a 34.5-mile scenic stretch that connects Lincoln to Conway. Did you know the “Kanc” is the Northeast’s first National Scenic Byway?
If you feel like heading west, drive up over Kinsman Notch. This is the westernmost of the major notches in NH, and features everything from Beaver Cascades and Beaver Pond to the endlessly explorable Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves.
Other regional highlights include the Walter Newton Natural Area in Plymouth. This 1.2-mile loop trail features a cellar hole, a bog, and Rainbow Falls. The falls are most stunning after a period of rain or snow melt. The J.E. Henry Trail is a 3.2-mile out and back path in Lincoln that runs alongside the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River.
WOODSVILLE, BATH, & NORTH HAVERHILL
We like to think of this charming trio of towns as the covered bridge capital of New England. Travel alongside the Wild Ammonoosuc River as you make your way to Woodsville, Bath, and North Haverhill. Three lovely covered bridges await!
Bath-Haverhill Covered Bridge (circa 1829): Oldest covered bridge still in use in the state. Pedestrian-friendly.
Bath Bridge (circa 1832): Longest covered bridge in the state with both sides located in New Hampshire. Pedestrian-friendly.
Swiftwater Covered Bridge (circa 1849): Locally distinctive single span Paddleford truss design. Turn to page 103 to tour more White Mountains Covered Bridges!
WARREN & RUMNEY
Head to the Baker River Valley (and more specifically, Warren & Rumney) for laidback outdoor adventures. Where to first?
Polar Caves (p. 16): Explore 9 glacial caves, animal exhibits, and an epic, breezy view from the boardwalk ascending Hawk’s Cliff.

LINCOLN & WOODSTOCK
The mountain towns of Lincoln and Woodstock are placed perfectly between I-93 and the iconic 34.5-mile scenic Kancamagus Highway. Local shopping, as well as brewery and winery hopping, help make this duo a standout in the region, but for us, the biggest draw will always be the great outdoors and the majorly awesome attractions.
This area is well known as the western gateway to the White Mountain National Forest, and it offers a multitude of outdoorsy ways to explore. Walk the Discovery Trail, a 1.4-mile family-friendly loop trail near the start of the Kancamagus Highway, or shop for local snacks in town and head to Beaver Pond at the top

Mountain summits, imposing ridgelines, and unique small towns are hallmarks of the Northern White Mountains. This area is home to two scenic notches (deep, narrow valleys also known as gaps or passes in other parts of the United States) and endless ways to recreate in the great outdoors. Visit a historic attraction! Hike, bike, snowmobile, or ski. The Northern White Mountains is perfect for adventurers and families alike.
Franconia and Crawford Notches are filled with popular hikes. Stop by a White Mountain National Forest Ranger Station to learn more about trails in the area or visit the AMC Highland Center in Crawford Notch to participate in a guided hike.
Never been hiking before? Always pack the 10 Essentials and follow our Hiking Tips (pg. 107), hike with a friend, and purchase a NH Hike Safe card
If you’re after a different kind of outdoor adventure, consider biking several different routes (such as PRKR Mtn Trails, the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail, and the Franconia Notch Bike Path) or paddling in a canoe or kayak (at spots like Echo Lake, Moore Reservoir, and the Androscoggin River).
For the arts and culture buff, the towns of Bethlehem, Littleton, and Whitefield offer historic theatres with comedy nights, theatrical productions, and classic movies. Grab dinner and a beer before the show at one of Bethlehem or Littleton’s unique restaurants and breweries.
SUGAR HILL
Known as the “newest” town in New Hampshire, Sugar Hill was incorporated in 1962. Its namesake sugar maples, as well as its unparalleled views of the Franconia Range, have drawn notable past residents like actress Bette Davis and novelist Earnest Poole.
Sugar Hill is a quintessential New England village hailed for its spectacular pink and purple lupine flowers that bloom every June.
A quick note on lupine etiquette: be respectful of all posted signage, and do not trespass on private property. Avoid stepping on the blooms where walking is allowed, and no matter how tempting, please refrain from cutting any flowers to take home. Instead, leave the beautiful lupine for all to enjoy!

Franconia sits on a rich iron deposit, and the region once produced pig iron and bar iron for farm tools and cast-iron ware. It is home to the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway and was once home to Franconia College during the 1960s and 1970s.
Franconia is the place to embrace the joie de vivre of the great outdoors. While you’re in town, stop by the Besaw Iron Furnace, an octagonal stone stack visible on the far side of the Gale River. It was built with local granite and is all that remains of a 200-year-old iron smelter.

TWIN MOUNTAIN & BRETTON WOODS
Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest, the towns of Twin Mountain and Bretton Woods offer year-round outdoor adventure, natural beauty, the Northeast’s highest mountain peak, and welcoming vibes thanks to their shared history of hospitality and tourism.
Twin Mountain was incorporated in 1832 as the town of Carroll, which includes the villages of Twin Mountain, Bretton Woods, Fabyans, and Crawfords. Early settlers farmed fertile soil and felled the expansive forests. Today, the past informs the present from the long-gone grand hotels to the once thriving logging towns to the town’s historic cemeteries.
Bretton Woods is home to the Omni Mount Washington Resort, where delegates from 44 nations convened in 1944 to establish the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The distinctive red-roofed hotel is a destination for
guests from around the world and offers a veranda ideal for sipping a beverage while enjoying the stunning panoramic mountain views.
Just across the street from the Omni you’ll find Bretton Woods Ski Area, home to the state’s first 8-person gondola. Other on-property activities include golfing, horseback riding, tubing, mountain biking, and ziplining.
The nearby historic Crawford Path ranks as the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States. Dating back to 1819, this National Recreation Trail runs from Route 302 in Crawford Notch to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington.

Everyone wants to see a moose! One of the questions we get asked the most here in the White Mountains is, “where can I see a moose?” While it’s not an exact science, the best time to catch a glimpse of these majestic giants is dusk and dawn, and your chances of seeing one are even higher if you make the drive to Routes 3N, 115, and 2.
If you’re after a guaranteed animal sighting, visit Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. The ponds, wetlands and forests of this refuge support a wide variety of flora and fauna (including many species of birds). Hike or bring your bike—a section of the Presidential Rail Trail (which is also part of the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail) meanders right through the very best views at Pondicherry.

BERLIN & GORHAM
Berlin, located along the Androscoggin River, and known as the “City that Trees Built” was once the center of the papermaking industry. Today, Berlin offers visitors a chance to experience the outdoors by various means, including foot, pedal power, ATV, snowmobile, raft, guided moose tour, and more.
Where Routes 2 and 16 meet is Gorham. When the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad arrived in the 1850s, the town became a tourist destination and it remains so today.
At Jericho Mountain Park ATV, UTV, and snowmobile enthusiasts alike will enjoy miles of trails and scenic outlooks.
Head a little further south along Route 16 and you’ll find yourself traveling through Pinkham Notch, a mountain pass that separates the Presidential Range from the Wildcat Range to the east. Many hikers choose to start their ascent of Mount Washington from Pinkham Notch, while adventurous, experienced skiers test their skills in Tuckerman Ravine, and those on the hunt for a scenic waterfall make the short trek to Glen Ellis Falls.

The Great NORTH WOODS
The Great North Woods is New Hampshire’s wildest region. From this remote outpost, visitors can explore the northernmost reaches of the White Mountain National Forest, where endless acres await. Take an ATV or snowmobile out on the trail. Pack up your fishing gear and head to a local pond. Kayak down a river or climb a mountain. Along the way, you just might encounter the wildlife that this part of Coos County is famed for.
Moose Alley, located along Route 3, is the place to be if you’re looking to spot one of the state’s iconic ungulates. Local tour companies offer dusk excursions specifically geared towards moose sightings. We recommend paying special attention to watery hollows along the roadway or driving along Route 16 near Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge and Thirteen Mile Woods.

Cranmore Mountain Resort Story Land SCAN ME
The Mount Washington Valley, or simply “The Valley” as it is locally known, is a four-season outdoor recreationist’s playground. While the vast mountain landscape drew artists and city-dwellers here in the 1800’s, it continues to draw visitors from all over the world for skiing, shopping, rock climbing, hiking, and photo-taking.
Along with the incredible mountain backdrops, the Valley is also home to pristine lakes for paddling, winding rivers for tubing and wildlife watching, and beautiful waterfalls. What about covered bridges? Local highlights include the Albany Covered Bridge (an oft-photographed stop on the eastern end of the Kancamagus Highway), and the Swift River Covered Bridge (open to pedestrians only).
Notable natural amenities include Whitaker Woods, a peaceful 4-season trail system owned by the town of Conway, and Echo Lake State Park, a perfect spot for swimming and admiring the rocky views of nearby Cathedral Ledge.
While you’re in town, take advantage of the Valley’s bounty of tax-free shopping opportunities, including local boutiques, specialty shops, and outlet malls.
The dining scene is just as diverse and memorable, as are the breweries and distilleries for toasting another adventurous day!
CHOCORUA, OSSIPEE, SANDWICH & TAMWORTH
Along the eastern edge of New Hampshire, placed cozily between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains, is the historic town of Tamworth. This enclave, founded in 1766, encompasses the villages of Chocorua, Tamworth, South Tamworth, Whittier, and Wonalancet. Won’t you join us for a ride?
The Tamworth area is laced with rich history along every mile of the winding roads. Take your time traveling past stones walls, old churches, and pretty farmland; along the way, you just might spot the historic marker in Wonalancet detailing the origins of the hardy Chinook sled dog (New Hampshire’s state dog).
Did you know Grover Cleveland, America’s 22nd and 24th president, held a summer home on Cleveland Hill Road?
It’s little wonder why so many are still drawn to this part of the White Mountains. All one needs to do is take a look at the commanding view of Lake Chocorua and Mount Chocorua, right off Route 16. This is one of the most photographed spots in America! Pull over, grab your camera, and take a stroll along the wooden bridge to capture your own likeness.
If you need to stretch your legs even more, check out the trails at Tin Mountain Conservation Center.

A popular vacation destination, the Lakes Region is fittingly named for the 273 lakes and ponds in the region, the largest of which are Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnisquam, Squam Lake, and Newfound Lake. Throughout the region, the scenery is spectacular, the waters are crystal clear, the beaches are sandy, and there is every imaginable water sport available including ice fishing and ice sailing in the winter.
Lake Winnipesaukee’s approximate number of miles of shoreline
Approximate surface area (in square miles) of Lake Winnipesaukee
Maximum depth (in feet) of Lake Winnipesaukee
Lake Winnipesaukee, with mountain ranges and wooded shoreline as the backdrop, takes the prize as the largest lake in New Hampshire and is also the third largest lake in New England. While this area is known mostly for its lakes, there are two small mountain ranges that offer great hiking and stunning views: the Belknap and the Ossipee Mountains. Take advantage of the multitude of water activities such as boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing or make your way to Weirs Beach with its boardwalk, train rides, and family amusements.
Be sure to tour Squam Lake in Holderness, where the multiple Academy Award-winning movie, On Golden Pond was filmed. See the sights from the movie that starred Henry and Jane Fonda, and Katherine Hepburn.

Mount Washington Cruises
No New Hampshire visit is complete without a visit on the historic M/S Mount Washington boat. Since 1872, this majestic ship has cruised the sparkling waters of Lake Winnipesaukee, surrounded by the most spectacular
A bustling railroad line. A vibrant lakefront town. It’s easy to see how Weirs Beach became a staple for guests from Concord, NH and Boston, MA starting in the 1850s. Today, it’s known for a vibrant mix of family-friendly stops and gorgeous scenery.
Ready to feel those lake breezes? Take a nostalgic train trip along the shores of NH’s largest lake aboard the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad or book a ticket for the iconic M/S Mount Washington boat to get a real feel for lake life. Afterwards, enjoy vintage arcade games and candy and souvenir shops.
For even more excitement, set aside some time in June for Laconia Motorcycle Week, the oldest motorcycle rally in the world! The events, live music, and festivities feel like a revival of the vibrant boardwalk scene of Weirs Beach in the 1950s.
New this autumn, Weirs Beach will also be hosting the New Hampshire Pumpkin Festival! Enjoy street performers, food vendors, and more, and see if the number of lit jack-o’-lanterns gathered in one place just might break the Guiness Book of World Records.
Laconia is the Lakes Region’s home city, where you can walk the historic Downtown or explore attractions in neighboring Gilford. Gunstock Mountain Resort is home to large events, plus their mountain adventure park will give you a thrill.
The Memorial Arch of Tilton was built in 1882 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is a 55' tall, 40' wide arch made from New Hampshire granite that was inspired by the builder’s trip to Rome. It sits on a hill overlooking the town of Tilton and the Winnipesaukee River and is a lovely spot to take a stroll or bring a picnic lunch. Laconia is also home to Granite State Rail Bikes, offering the most breathtaking views of Lake Winnisquam. This 5-mile round-trip rail bike adventure begins and ends at the historic Laconia Railroad Station in Veterans Square which opened in 1892 and operated until the late 1960’s.

The White Mountains region has a long and rich history, and we celebrate each of the unique historical characters, milestone events, and major “firsts” that have contributed to making the White Mountains the special place that it is today.
Pre-colonization: Several Native American tribes–including the Abenaki, Penacook, and Wabanaki–made the White Mountains their home. Many geological features still bear Native names including the Pemigewasset River, the Kancamagus Highway, and Mount Chocorua.
Late 1700’s: The Crawford family settled in what is now known as Crawford Notch. They provided food and accommodations for early travelers, and created roads, turnpikes, and the Crawford Path (the oldest continuously maintained hiking trail in the United States).
Mid 1800’s: The White Mountain School of Painters began traveling to the area, inspired by the beauty of the region. Thomas Cole arrived in 1827, followed by Benjamin Champney, David Johnson, and Mary Safford.
Logging barons, such as J.E. Henry, logged much of the White Mountains and built mill towns and railroads to accommodate the logging operations. In Lincoln, there is still evidence of the old mill.
Railroads were not just for logging anymore. Rail travel for tourists from Boston and Concord, NH made it easy for city folk to visit the White Mountains.
1861: The Mt. Washington Auto Road opened as a carriage road. In 1912, it formally switched from horses to motors. Today, it is America’s Oldest Man-Made Attraction, hosting more than 45,000 vehicles annually.
1869: The world’s first mountain climbing cog railway, the Mount Washington Cog Railway, was built.
Late 1800’s-Early 1900’s: At the height of their popularity, there were 30 or so “Grand Hotels” in the White Mountains. Today, four remain: the Omni Mount Washington Hotel, the Eagle Mountain House, the Mountain View Grand, and the Wentworth.
1911: Congressman John W. Weeks introduced a bill that was signed into law by President Taft. The Weeks Act authorized the federal government to purchase land to be protected and preserved as national forest territory. Under this law, the White Mountain National Forest was formed and nearly 800,000 acres have been preserved.
1938: The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway is the first passenger aerial tramway in North America, carrying passengers to Cannon’s 4,080’ summit.
1959: The Kancamagus Highway got its start in the 1800’s as two unconnected dirt roads and was opened to through traffic in 1959. The Kanc was paved in 1964, opened for winter traffic in 1968, and designated a National Scenic Byway in 1996.
2003: On May 3, Franconia Notch’s iconic Old Man of the Mountain crumbled. Today, visitors can glimpse the former profile at the Profile Plaza and Historic Site.

TALK WITH A RANGER
Take it from us—talking with a White Mountain National Forest ranger is one of the best ways to get the lay of the land. Check out Kristen Coates’ take on her favorite hikes, as well as need-to-knows for any hiker hitting the trail.
“It is important to carry a pack with the 10 Essentials when hiking. Accidents can happen, and being prepared will help you until rescue arrives, which can often take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours (or longer!) depending on location and weather conditions.
Always leave your hiking plan with someone. Bring a map. Have enough water, electrolytes and protein snacks, plus an emergency whistle and blanket. These are only a few of the items you should pack. To learn more about the hiking essentials and best hiking practices, visit HikeSafe.com or speak with a White Mountain National Forest ranger.”

MOUNT WASHINGTON
The peak of Mount Washington was first seen by European explorers from the Atlantic Ocean in 1524.
Known to Native Americans as Agiocochook , the summit was believed to be the home of the Great Spirit.
Today, by foot, car or train, the 6,288' summit of Mount Washington is surprisingly accessible. Home to Mount Washington State Park, it is visited by more than 250,000 people each year from all over the world, who come to revel in the top-of-the-world views of New England, New York, Canada, and on a clear day, even the Atlantic Ocean!
The first footpath to the summit was carved out by Ethan Allen Crawford in 1819; today

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing railroad, opened in 1869.
Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and its weather is variable year-round. The record high temperature is 72°F; the record low, -47°F. Without factoring in the wind chill!
With an average July temperature of 54°F, summer visitors can get a respite from warmer temperatures in the valleys below. When you come, plan to bring a jacket and sturdy shoes. And don’t forget your camera!

The White Mountain NATIONAL FOREST RECREATION PASS
The White Mountain National Forest is one of the most heavily used National Forests in the country. With that use comes a large workload to maintain the recreation facilities. As a result, a program is in place to collect fees for recreational use.
All unattended vehicles parked on National Forest land must display a Recreation Pass where signed. Pass options include a $5 day pass available onsite, a $30 single or $40 household annual pass for those who use the Forest year-round. Recreation Passes are available at area businesses, USFS Information Centers, and the White Mountains Visitors Center. For those holding the America the Beautiful Pass, Access Pass, and Senior Pass, parking is free. Note: prices are subject to change. To get your Recreation Pass, visit us online at www.whitemts.us/usfspasses
THE COLORS of AUTUMN in the WHITE MOUNTAINS ARE DAZZLING!
Every September and October, visitors travel from all over the world to view the region’s annual display of color. Fall, Columbus Day weekend in particular, is extremely popular; it’s a good idea to make your reservations well in advance.
For a free copy of the Leaf Peeper’s Guide, visit the White Mountains Visitor Center (page 19), call 603-745-8720 or 800-346-3687, or visit us online at VisitWhiteMountains.com
for a more enjoyable Fall Foliage Visit in the White Mountains.
Plan Ahead Check attraction and activity websites before visiting to make sure you have up to date information, and to purchase advance online admissions.
Visit Mid-Week If your schedule allows, plan a visit mid-week; you may find that you have an overlook, trail, or roadway mostly to yourself.
Take the Roads Less Travelled To avoid the congestion that sometimes happens along busier routes, consider one of our “roads less traveled” for a more enjoyable autumn foliage experience. Head down a side road such as Rte. 112 West through Kinsman Notch, Rte. 118 in Warren, Rte. 113 in Sandwich, or Rte. 2 in Randolph and Jefferson. All are stunning at this time of year—and have less traffic!
Pack Your Patience Take a deep breath and enjoy our fresh mountain air and the scent of crisp fall leaves. Enjoy the fact that you’re in the White Mountains and soak in the beauty around you. Staffing shortages exist, and some businesses may have modified operating hours. Pack your patience along with your toothbrush and camera!
Be Safe and Respectful When visiting the White Mountains, please be mindful of your surroundings. Stay on the trail and leave only footprints when taking a hike. If you carry something into a park or attraction, be sure to carry it out. Familiarize yourself with the rules when it comes to camping and ask questions if you don’t know the answers. Be careful around water and on steep ledges—no Instagram post is worth hurting the environment or yourself. Respect the beauty of nature that surrounds you, as well as the staff at your favorite restaurants, breweries, hotels, and attractions.

SPRING IN THE WHITE MOUNTAINS
Spring in the White Mountains – what is it like? We have our fair share of blooming flowers and sunny strolls, but our neck of the woods also has another name for this time of year: mud season. Expect snow, mud, and all types of weather if you visit this time of year, mid-March to mid-June, plus far fewer crowds and plenty of fun to be found!
To make the most of your trip, pack sensibly and plan ahead.
Bring plenty of layers and sturdy waterproof shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and call around before you hop in the car to make sure your preferred restaurants, shops, and activities will be open during your visit (as many small businesses use this quiet time of year to prep for the White Mountains' busiest season).
Planning a hike? Keep in mind that winter at higher elevations can last all the way from September through May. Pack accordingly, and only hike when it is safe and smart to do so. Page 107.
