GREAVER BREAKING INTO THE SCENE Words by Danielle Gittleman // Photos courtesy of High Road Publicity

RELEASING

a debut album is exciting for any band at the start of their career. For Greaver, a five-piece post-hardcore band hailing from Durham, North Carolina, this is the moment they’ve been waiting for. Vocalists Michael Rozier and Michael Townsel, guitarist Sean McNaught, bassist Eli Wray and drummer Travis Hall, have been working for months to create their debut album that they’re excited for the world to hear. “Oh man, we are SO excited. Honestly, it almost feels unreal,” said Rozier. Unlike many albums — especially debut ones — The Faun tells a story. “As a huge fan of the mystery genre, I really wanted to write a cohesive murder story that would incorporate racial turmoil while being relatable to listeners of all backgrounds. During the writing process we often found ourselves being emotionally dragged along by the story. We came up with the concept and almost as if the characters had come alive, The Faun began to unfold so naturally without our guidance. We can only hope that it touches other folks as much as it’s touched us,” explained Rozier. Fans are loving what they’re hearing. Their first single off of the album “A Poisoned Well,” was released before the album at the start of April and fans loved it instantly. “The reception to the single was insane,” said Rozier. “It’s been awhile since we’ve dropped anything so we were anxious to see the turnout. People have been showing us so much love!” Although the track was chosen as the lead single for the album, it isn’t the song to represent the entire album. “I don’t necessarily think that it’s 1--% representative of the rest of the album, but i do believe that it does showcase elements that appear throughout the rest of the record,” said Rozier. “‘A Poisoned Well’ is dark, fast, and heavy, while showcasing some clean vocals and shimmery hopeful sections, The Faun is all of those things.” Things went smoothly for the guys of Greaver when it came to the writing and recording process of their debut album, as if they had been doing it for many other albums, instead of their very first one. “Our writing process is pretty formulaic. One of us usually records a

rough demo of an idea, someone else gets hooked on it, and we build from there. Typically we whip up two guitar parts, more to drums, bass and finally third guitar and vocals,” said Rozier. “Recording was wonderful! We went to Warrior Sounds in North Carolina and it was like summer camp. It was a super relaxing environment, which made it easier to comfortably stay in the zone.” Once everything was put together, Greaver officially released The Faun on April 29. The band played an album release show in their hometown to some of their biggest fans, and close friends and family. Since the album’s release, the band announced that they will be doing a three week tour in June with Youth League in support of the album. The guys can’t wait to play some of the new tracks off of the album live for their fans. Rozier is particularly excited to play “Southfield” live. “It’s named after the town I was raised in back in Michigan, so I really wanted it to be powerful and touching. I personally feel that we accomplished both of those things. So stoked for the world to hear all of this.” In the midst of all of the excitement of the album debuting, Rozier is also opening a brewery. Rozier plans to open the brewery while juggling the band, as something that he does on the side. “Interestingly enough, it was an idea that my good friends/neighbors came up with. THey’re the real masterminds,” said Rozier. “Given that I’ve been bartending for a while, we got to talking, next thing I know I’m helping with all of the brewing, and now I’m fully apart of the mix. It’s a truly amazing thing to be involved with. I’ll be keeping everyone posted on how things are going!” There’s a lot coming up for the guys of Greaver and this is only the beginning. Keep an eye out for them — they’re definitely out to make their mark on the music industry and The Faun is just the start. “Hang tight! We’ve got some crazy plans for the road ahead. Most importantly, if you’re a gamer, you should shoot the band a message and get to know us. Especially if you’re into Smash bros or the FF Series.”

JACK BERRY A FIST FIGHT IN CHURCH Words by Casey Wolfe // Photos courtesy of Matthew Simmons & Jake Giles Netter

JACK BERRY

, alternative/blues rock singer from Tennessee released his LP, Mean Machine, this month. While the style of his music hasn’t changed much, this LP has. “There’s more attitude and character is these songs — more conviction. The space in time between these two efforts left a lot of life to happen to me, and most of it was detrimental,” said Berry. He also describes his sound as “a fistfight in church.” The recording process was interrupted by a series of events, but has availed and has been released to eager listeners. After being homeless and having a tumor cut out of his neck, Berry said, “It damn near killed me if I’m being honest. This record’s got a damn heartbeat the size of a bison.” Berry cites artists such as Elvis, Jimmy Page, Josh Homme, Alison Mosshart, Rival Sons and Ben Harper as inspirations. “I tend to draw to the bravado in artists and music and those that emanate such with a personalized style,” he said. “The heaviness, the swagger, the gumption and gusto...it’s dark but it’s gorgeous and it’s true. “ “The Bull” was the first single released off of the LP. It was chosen because, “to me that song has all the qualities of the full album embedded into it. The storytelling, the darkness, the mass of the grooves, the rise and fall of tensions — if Mean Machine was a film, ‘The Bull’ would be the trailer,” said Berry. His short term goals are local, focusing on a release show the week before the official release. “It’s an important event to me,” Berry added.

Berry is open to collaborations on any upcoming music, and, in fact, hopes to see them in the future. “I think collaborations with other players are going to be certain. As far as songwriting and singing goes, I haven’t ventured into the thought yet,” he said. “I heard a song on Jonathan Tyler’s recent album that he did with Nikki Lane and I thought to myself something like that would be nice.” Fans can expect to see Jack Berry around this summer. He is currently working on lining up some shows around then. “Securing a opener spot on a bigger tour is the idea and goal. Festivals and such are a big success for breaking in.” However, touring with big names isn’t the objective just yet. “At this point I can’t quite conceptualize a big tour, I’m just trying to play,” he said. Most songs off of the LP had been played live before, so the artist had little to no trouble when it came to recording. However, Berry said that recording happens quickly. “All these songs came in a flurry. Lyrics and composition happen at any point and get wrapped up within a few hours. It’s the tweaks and accents that take longer and those I typically can’t visualize until most the song is complete, bass and drums included,” he said. While the release went smoothly, Jack Berry is ready to get on the road and perform. With a lot of good feedback and support from fans, Berry just wants to get down to it. “I just want to play already.”

WANDERER Interview by Tori Pisco // Photos courtesy of True North Artist Mgmt

So many awesome bands have broken up already this year. Other than probably your own, which of them are you sad to see go? I guess I’d say One Direction! Haven’t they broken up? Did you decide to start Wanderer prior to the RadioDriveBy hiatus, or as a result of? RadioDriveBy ended as a mutual parting of ways, and once it was over I had the opportunity to do a solo project — something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. What is/are your instrument(s)? What other experiences have you had with music growing up? My main instruments would be guitar and singing. I started playing drums originally, and picked up the guitar soon after. I’ve been in a lot of different bands, and been playing music for over 10 years now. Can you tell us about your debut single, “Only In The Night?” Who wrote it? Where was it recorded? I wrote it, and played pretty much all the instruments. I recorded it first myself, and then with a friend of mine. The song felt like a good first single for the project, to set the tone of where I want to go musically. Is this song part of a record that is already recorded, written, or in-progress? Can you tell us anything about future music? I can’t say too much yet, but there is definitely more music on the way. I have some material already done, and am writing more as we speak. Who did you work with to create the music video for “Only In The Night?” How did you come up with the concept? I worked with my friend Cory Davis — we’ve done a lot together in the past. The concept came of course from the song — I wanted to visually capture what I saw in my head when writing it. We wanted to have it be mysterious, and set in the city, and to have a certain color scheme.

Really happy with how it turned out! Have you played live shows or toured as Wanderer before? If not, are you planning on touring at any point this year? Any place you really want to play? No. Not yet. That part of the journey will come in the future. There will definitely be tours, and lots of shows. I want to create a special live experience, and take the time to make my vision come through in that setting too. Who are some artists that might share the audience you expect (or have already seen) Wanderer to draw? I’d say artists like The Weekend, The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, The Neighbourhood…. to name a few. I listen to a lot of different music, from indie/folk to r&b and electronic stuff. I don’t want to feel boxed into any genre with my music. There’s so much to explore. Have you figured out the story you’re going to tell with Wanderer? What (and who) are some of your influences for your music? Yes. A lot of it is already planned out, and been in my head for a while. I want this project to create a story not just for myself, but for everyone who listens. I want the songs to be cinematic, and to narrate people’s lives. Of course the name “Wanderer” has a lot to do with it. I think a lot of young people, myself included, feel like we don’t quite know where we are going, or what to do sometimes. The idea of wandering, but being okay with that and enjoying the journey is something I want to capture. All the different emotions and experiences that come with being a teenager, being in your twenties, figuring yourself out and figuring out the world around us.

We got the chance to chat with NYC-based rockers Gideon’s Army about their upcoming release and the trials and tribulations they faced while recording. Check out what they had to say! How does your new upcoming album King of the League compare to your first album, Burn For The Living? Do they have anything in common? They are all songs written by me, on my guitar, about my life, that is what they both have in common. Burn for the Living was recorded entirely by myself and Producer Steven Wise. The two of us were responsible for producing all of the sounds on that record in a DIY fashion in a “home” studio. It was originally meant to be a 1-3 song demo, but I loved how it was sounding and what we were creating together so I kept going. It turned into a 12 song full-length album of original songs. King of the League was recorded in a proper studio with some of the best musicians in town. And that town happens to be New York City. You have released three singles in the last two or three months. What made you choose

“Red Lips,” “Desperate Hearts, “and “Don’t Mind” to be your singles? Are they all off the new album? Do you think they’re good tracks to really sum up the sound of your upcoming album? “Don’t Mind” just kicks from note one. It’s a thrill ride in a muscle car that goes from 0-60 in no time at all. Everyone involved was pretty much in consensus that that would be the lead single. “Red Lips” is gorgeous. From the intro to the love story, to the instrumental section, it can only really be described as MUSIC, it transcends genre. I listen to it over and over and over. “Desperate Hearts” spills the most blood. The words were difficult to say out loud. It’s me at my most vulnerable. Generosity isn’t really generosity unless it hurts a little bit. Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming album? What can fans expect? It’s a snapshot of my life musically and

personally, over a few years. The album encompasses three different love relationships so you are going to hear songs about three different significant relationships. Also, about my life, surroundings, and struggles during that time. The musicianship on this album is outstanding, the engineering too. Masters at what they do. It will inspire you. What’s your writing and recording process like? Has it changed over time from album to album? I commented earlier on how the recording process has changed, I’ve grown a lot over the years and my judgement has improved and my tastes have expanded. This carries over into my songwriting too. Time spent well has a way of whittling away the bullshit. It’s harder to speak nonsense, it’s harder to write nonsense, and it’s harder to play nonsense. You say more with less. Out of all the songs on the album what track(s) are you most excited for people to hear? “Don’t Mind” or “Red Lips” depending on your mood. How has the fan reception been so far with the singles that you’ve released? Do you find that they’re digging the new music? Yeah, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. What have you been able to take away from creating the new album? What are some trial and tribulations you’ve gone through? We lost our lead guitar player right before we went into the recording studio. We had spent the previous year playing gigs, writing together, rehearsing, and then all of a sudden that relationship unraveled. Like I said before though, this project moves on regardless of the behavior of other people. I was introduced to Thad DeBrock and now I couldn’t imagine this album with any other guitar player. He is a monster and a virtuoso. He’s one of the greats.

someone who’s never heard your music before? I love good time Rock ‘N Roll music that makes you move, so a lot of the classic rock guys and rockabilly players like Chuck Berry, Elvis or the Stray Cats and I love Rock and Classic rock that moves you, like the songs of Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, the Black Crowes, Elvis etc... To be able to do both is where you want to be. That’s a night out. Have you had a moment with a fan that changed the way you think about your music? I had a fan, who is now a good friend, come up to me and tell me that my song “Don’t Look Back” helped her get through the premature death of her husband. The song is about the challenges I was facing with a particular love relationship, but the sentiment resonated much deeper and much broader than I intended. You never know how it’s going to affect people or what their connection to the song is going to be. I sang along euphorically to Green Day’s “Time of Your Life (Good Riddance) for years relating to the bittersweet feelings of moving on to a different chapter of your life without knowing or sensing it was about a break-up. What’s next for you guys this year? What can fans expect? Perhaps a tour? Yes. Our album, King of the League, comes out May 27th. Our album release show is June 1st 9:00pm at the Cutting Room in New York City and then we will hit the road. Is there anything else you’d like to tell your fans? I show up at our gigs to have a TIME. To have as much fun as can be had in a small window of time. I love rock ‘n roll music and the atmosphere it creates and the feelings it generates. If you feel the same way come out. We will get down. And we will all leave there feeling buoyant and inspired.

PATRICK CRAIG PLUNGING INTO PUNK-FOLK Words by Melissa Thayer // Photos courtesy of Rookie PR

UP

and coming artist, Patrick Craig, is taking the music world by storm with his unique punk-folk sound that is sure to make a splash this year. 22-year-old, London native — who looks a bit like James Corden (but prefers hearing that Corden looks like him), began making music in his yearly teenage years after being a part of a punk band and acoustic duo before breaking out on his own. He began writing his own songs and performing wherever he could and the rest is history. His music, often described as alternative, or punk-folk blends two genres together perfectly. For those who haven’t had a listen yet, imagine the edginess of Front Bottoms mixed with folky acoustic sounds of Mumford and Sons and you’ve got Patrick Craig. Craig gives credit to the influence of Frank Turner as being a paramount to his sound, whose music he was introduced to at a young age. However, during the time that he was writing his album he recognitions The Hold Steady, The Mountain Goats, and a few others as massive influences on his punk sound and bands which “hold the lyricism at the forefront of their music” he explains. Craig’s debut record, entitled True Story, was released on April 29. With this album listeners can expect to hear a more mature sound than anything Craig has released previously. Craig explains, “Partly because there’s more instrumentation in the ‘full band’ songs, and partly because this album has taken over a year from start to finish, and I have worked on nearly every minute detail to make it sound the best it can.” The biggest problem Craig came across during the whole process was with the arrangement of some of the songs. He explains that “Fighter” and “Splinters” were huge rock songs originally, with “Splinters” sounding like something from a U2 album. Craig tells us, “I played the demos to a friend and he said, ‘Why? Don’t use drums just because you feel you should.’ Which hit me hard in terms of thinking really strongly about the arrangements, and lead to both these songs being acoustic.” Prior to the album’s release Craig premiered the video for “Begin Again” which came out in early April. The video features Craig alongside a puppet. “The video was a silly idea

at first but I’m so happy with it,” Craig explains. “I’ve always liked puppets and wanted to make a video using some…” He began brainstorming the idea with his girlfriend, who in turn did the actual puppeteering for the video. “Some people have read quite a bit into it, saying that the puppet represents a younger version of myself, or the part of my brain which I need to listen to,” Craig expresses. But, despite some ideas that his fans have about the true meaning behind the video, Craig states that it was built on a much simpler idea; to be visually interesting and to make people smile. Though there isn’t as much intentional meaning behind it, planned by Craig he loves that people are taking their own interpretations from it. “I would encourage anyone to think about what it might mean to him or her,” he says. What’s next for Craig? Well, he hopes to begin touring as much as possible with no particular hesitations on any sort of gigs. “I love any gig, however small or big. If there are people interested in seeing my music then that’s where I want to play,” he said. Like many artists Craig has grown as a musician. With time and hard work he has become a better guitarist and a stronger singer since he started years ago. While some things change, some things don’t, “If I listen to any of the really old demos I have on my laptop I can still hear some of the same ideas that are in my music now. I think spending the last couple of years listening to a wide variety of music has helped massively.” While Craig explains that he is ecstatic to have his debut album out for the world to hear, he is nervous as well, but mostly excited. After having had these songs in his pocket for a while now he’s excited that they’re “…finally getting a proper release”. From here he hopes to continue on the road to success while still connecting with his fans, and we can’t wait to watch him do so. “If someone says that a song has touched them, or they have connected with it emotionally then that’s a success for me. I think my biggest dream is to connect with people as much as possible, for as long as I am able to.”

THE FLUX MACHINE Interview by Casey Wolfe // Photos courtesy of Effective Immediately PR

You draw a lot of influence from classic rock musicians. What about that genre or time period speaks to you? It’s like archaeology. You delve into the mindset of rockers who were at the edge of the creative cliff, jumping in without parachutes, and somehow landing in an oasis of fertile creative output. This is where the great rock dinosaurs roamed, and they were tearing it up like a vicious Rex. No big industry, just get the massive movement to the people and it will spread like fire. And it sure did, The Flux Machine is a flowering tree of rock music singed by the rock flame, and delivering heartfelt, powerful, influential songs. The music video for "Louder!" has a very high energy. Was the music video inspired by the song or vice versa? What was the best part about making the music video? How do you come up with ideas for them? The genius behind the video is Mr. Juanma F. Pozzo, a spaniard wiz videographer who has the eye that only very few have, coupled with the stamina to chase down the visual exactly as he imagined them and allowing the magic to take place, via countless hours of handmade visual effect and all that complicated stuff. When

we saw it, it was a confirmed jaw-to-the-floor moment for everyone of us members of The Flux Machine. If you had to describe your sound in a few words to someone who's never heard it before, what would they be? Beauty and the beast. Growl with soft fluffy hair, attitude with humility. Melody in a cage of rage. If you could tour with any other musicians who would they be? What would be your dream lineup be? Do you have any plans to tour in the upcoming months? Of course them rolling rocks..boulders, stones.. pebbles! As far as actual touring, we’re excited to be playing the Move Music Festival, the Jersey Shore Music Festival and Northside Festival this summer here on the east coast, with more shows lining up as we speak! What's next for you in the upcoming months? Anything fans can look forward to? We have so much planned. The true nexus of it is that in each and every show we will pour our hearts out and rock it as hard as it's ever been done, within our Flux style.

HEFFRON DRIVE ANOTHER STEPPING STONE Words by Danielle Gittleman // Photos courtesy of Lion House PR

KENDALL

Schmidt has already made it to the big time… with the help of Big Time Rush, that is. Schmidt first joined the boyband back in 2009, and together they took the pop world by storm. The band released three studio albums along with four successful seasons of their very own TV show on Nickelodeon, and decided to take things slow in 2014 when they announced that they would be taking a hiatus. Before making it big with Big Time Rush, Schmidt met Dustin Belt in California back in 2008. The two immediately hit it off and became fast friends and before they knew it, music partners. As a result, they named their band Heffron Drive, after the street they met on. Soon after starting Heffron Drive, Schmidt was given the opportunity to join Big Time Rush, (along with Belt as their touring guitarist) and Heffron Drive was put on hold...until now.

“Fan reaction has actually been far far greater than we expected” Since Big Time Rush’s hiatus announcement, the duo have been hard at work reviving their project. The band released their debut album, Happy Mistakes in 2014, and an acoustic version is the same album, Happy Mistakes (Unplugged) in 2015. In the beginning of April, Heffron Drive released their newest single, “Rain Don’t Come,” to their very excited and passionate fans, and the result has been absolutely incredible for the band. “Fan reaction has actually been far far greater than we expected,” said Schmidt. “We trended the song worldwide today and topped the trending charts on twitter for #RainDontCome in Italy, United States, Netherlands, Germany, Mexico, and Brazil. It was insane!” Whether or not they have any plans for another album, or possibly another single in the works, Schmidt was very tight lipped. “We are actually working on our next song now,” he said. “Can’t tell though, it’s top secret for now!”

Following their own path, the band released an acoustic version of the debut album last year, something out of the ordinary for a newer band. “We never really saw ourselves as acoustic performers. We are a ‘band’ and we knew that we were really stepping outside the box [doing that],” said Schmidt. This time around, though, the guys are working on some brand new material. When it comes to the writing and recording process, Schmidt and Belt really work well together. They bounce ideas off of one another until they create something that they absolutely love. “Usually I work with Dustin on making the songs, but sometimes I will go off on my own though, if I’m really feeling some things that I need to work out with my music,” explained Schmidt. “I’m actually working on a very special song right now that I had to take some time and work on just by myself.” Not only do the guys collaborate on the writing process, but they like to collaborate with other artists as well. “I’m definitely big on collaborations,” said Schmidt. “I have a list of people that I’ve been wanting to work with: Ariana Grande, Zedd, and a bunch of Italian artists. I collaborated with Hilary Duff last year and Logan [Henderson] this year. Working with other artists is one of my favorite things to do. My dream collaboration would be Taking Back Sunday or Panic! at the Disco.”

“We never really saw ourselves as acoustic performers we’re really stepping outside the box.” Whether or not we’ll get to hear more collaborations in the future is yet to be seen, but with Schmidt’s love for collaborations, it is most likely a possibility. As of right now, the guys have been tucked away working on new music and promoting their new single. Although there aren’t any tour dates scheduled as of now, Schmidt was quick to reassure that they will be hitting the road soon. “Our World Tour is definitely not over! We have quite a few more countries to hit in 2016,”

26 http://whitenoisezine.com

he said. “Keep watching my twitter for tour date releases, I always post them on my accounts first!” It’s about to be a very busy year for the guys of Heffron Drive, and they’re just getting started. “This year we will be releasing more new music, touring the world and celebrating our fans,” Schmidt said. “Oh yeah, and we are about to release some really awesome custom merch as well so fans can look out for that soon!” Although Schmidt was very tight lipped about what’s next for the band musically, he does promise fans that there will be new music soon. So hang on tight Drivers, you might be hearing some new music from your favorite duo sooner than you think. “I can’t give too many secrets away, but I will say that I will be releasing more songs soon and they will definitely be different from what you’ve heard from Heffron Drive before.” http://whitenoisezine.com

GOodbye FRIDAY Interview by Layne Edwards // Photos courtesy of Kimberly Grant

First off, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves? How did you guys come together? We're a 4 piece pop/rock/r&b band from New Jersey who love to tour the world and perform for our fans. We came together as best friends since we were little so it was easy for us to get together and form, we all loved music and loved being around each other so it was an easy puzzle. You guys have just released a new single, "She." Can you tell us a little bit about the song? Do you think the track really sums up your sound as a band? We came out with our single "she" about a month ago; the song is about a girl up and leaving a guy with no say, and never seeing her again. Yes, it's pretty sad but it worked for the song. I think it's more of a ballad for us, it is definitely our sound but we're coming out with our next single called "perfectly imperfect" that is actually full instruments, very radio friendly and exciting, which should be out next month. We are excited to release it and I think it will show a little more of who we are. We love the ballads but this song is really what we're about, so it's exciting. You've mentioned that you're working on an album and that it will drop at some point this Spring. How's the album coming along? Do you guys have an official release date yet? Can you tell us anything about the album? The album is coming along great! We had to push it back a little due to timing with other things that are going on but it's on it's way! We would say more towards the summer/ end of summer. The songs are definitely much more mature and radio friendly. Something we've been working on for a while now. You guys have been playing a few shows this month. How has it been so far? Do you have any plans for more touring in support of new music? Can you give us any hints? Shows have been amazing, been selling out a lot of venues which is incredible! And yes we will be going on tour next month for a U.S tour but can't say the band yet! Tickets will go on sale soon!

I've noticed that you guys play a lot of shows in support of anti-bullying. How did you guys get involved in such a great cause? Do you plan on playing more shows in support of the cause? Anti-bullying has been such a huge part of GBF. We've been with them basically since we started and have been moving forwards together as a family so we figured to sign with them and become one so it’s been going great. We absolutely will be playing more shows with them. I also noticed that you guys will be opening up for Chris Brown in Minnesota. Congratulations! How does it feel to open for him and play in such a huge venue? How did you guys land the gig? Thank you! Yes it feels amazing, definitely something we never would’ve thought of so we are very lucky. Our management and team have been so amazing to land us the gig, we are happy and lucky to be where we are and owe it to the fans. What (and who) are some of your musical influences? Do you think that they really translate into your music? We each have different influences! Rocco comes from a pop/r&b background michael Jackson, Chris brown, usher Aaron comes from a blues background John Mayer, jimi Hendrix, stevey Rae. Brett comes from a 80's rock background Bon jovi, John Mayer also! And Anthony comes from a very pop rock scene! Blink 182 ! It's def all over the board, but we blend together to make it radio ready! We love it! Are you guys into collaborations? Who would you absolutely love to collaborate with? We would love to collaborate with other artists, maybe Adam Levine? Chris brown? Definitely some cool artists to have on the record.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans? We love you guys. Thanks for sticking with us and without you we wouldn't be in this position. Thank you! Much love to our GBF fans :) http://whitenoisezine.com 29

KINKY RHINO unique beginnings Interview by Gianluca D’Elia // Photo courtesy of Effective Immediately PR From a unique name to an even more unique job; we got the chance to chat with Kinky Rhino about their time in the Blue Man Group, their new EP and what’s next for them this year. Check out what they had to say! How did you transition from working with the Blue Man Group to having your own band? Did you find it difficult, or was it fairly easy to transition? What made you decide to start a band? It hasn’t been much of a transition in that sense at all. I have always played in bands, never exclusively with Blue Man Group, and I still work for Blue Man Group. The big transition has been playing guitar, singing, and writing the songs as opposed to being the drummer.

What were those past experiences with BMG like? BMG is a great company to work for and they have provided me with a lot of great opportunities. I’ve been able to support myself through music and see the world thanks to them, it’s a relationship that I hope can last for a long time. How did the name of the band come about? A friend came up with it. He was trying to make fun of the stupid band names I always come up

with but it backfired because he gave me one I love deep down to my core.

L.A. but they have their own lives to live… I’ll be wrangling a full-time band when the time comes.

What got you into the “dirty rock n’ roll” genre? How would you describe yourselves to someone who’s never heard your music? I grew up in the 90’s so the state of the music industry back then really shaped a lot of who I am in that regard. I would prefer to have people just listen then try to have me explain, I’m bad at explaining and music is about music, not words.

You guys recently released a single, “Garage Roque,” how has the reception been so far? Do you think this song really sums up the overall sound of your upcoming EP? The reception from “Garage Roque” has been overwhelming, I think people get tricked by the name though. A lot of people call us a garage rock band now, or try to compare us to bands like The Sonics, but it was just a song title… I don’t know what kind of band this is supposed to be yet, and I’m not sure that I ever want to totally figure that out.

Who (and what) are your some of your biggest influences? Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, TOOL, Radiohead, Rush, ELO, MuteMath, Ben Kenney, Social Ghost, ABBA. Since you started playing live shows as a band just in December, how has this experience been so far? What has the fan reception been like? The experience overall has been really really fucking awesome. It’s a great feeling to take something you’ve created and put it out into the world, and an even better feeling when you get to do it with your friends. The fan reception has been wonderful as well, we have made a lot of new friends all over the country and I am incredibly grateful for all of the support. Do you guys have any plans to tour in the upcoming months? Who would you absolutely love to tour with? We will continue to play shows through the end of our run with Blue Man in late June. In the future I would like to tour with Light Beam Rider from Nashville, they are badass and I think the bands would fit well together. If I’m daydreaming and we were to open up for a large act I would say someone like QOTSA or Royal Blood.

Can you tell us about your upcoming EP? What is your writing and recording process like? The writing process takes all shapes and sizes. Sometimes I work on a song for months and months, and sometimes the song writes itself in two hours. I feel like my main job is being able to recognize when the song still needs something and when I should let it be, which can be much harder than it sounds, it’s easy to secondguess yourself. The recording process is easier because I don’t like going in unprepared, I like to have the parts figured out and the lyrics written so it’s just a matter of getting a take I can live with. What are your plans for the next year? Anything fans can expect? Either a full-length or multiple EP’s, more touring, more videos, more fun, just more. More, more, more! Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans? I love you and this is just the beginning.

Jeff Wright wrote all the songs and played all the instruments for the EP, but will the other live band members be more involved in the project in the future? Unfortunately this line up will have to go our separate ways when the BMG tour ends in June. I would be happy to have these guys follow me to http://whitenoisezine.com

Feathers & Flesh

U Words by Danielle Gittleman

M R E V I E W S

Swedish metal band Avatar released their newest album, Feathers & Flesh in the beginning of May. The album is described as a concept album, and tells the story of an owl throughout all of the tracks on the album. Feathers & Flesh opens with “Regret” — a haunting track that really sets the tone for the rest of the album. It gives off an eerie and creepy vibe to it and really paints the scene for the listener. The song doesn’t have many lyrics, but I really thought it wasn’t necessary to include them in the song. The transition into “House of Eternal Hunt,” is a fantastic one. The song immediately kicks off with an amazing guitar riff that allows the song to turn into an extremely upbeat track. In the middle of the song, I really enjoyed the breakdown and the guitar solo — it was absolutely phenomenal. Toward the end of the song, the rhythm really slowed down and showcased the vocals on the track, which I really liked. “For The Swarm,” really lived up to its name. To me, the song was very chaotic — and I think it was intended to be that way. Because of the chaoticness of the track, it felt like I really was in a swarm, and it worked for the concept album. Another notable track was “Fiddler’s Farewell.” It was one of the slower tracks on the album, but it still blended seamlessly with the rest of the songs, and it was definitely one of my favorites. “Sky Burial” was another haunting track on the album and it really brings the album full-circle. It reminded me of the very first track, “Regret,” with the eerie feeling it gave me and it was a good idea to put it at the end of the album. I really enjoyed the concept of this album, and the fact that it really did tell a story. When listening to the album, you can tell how much thought and work was put into it, and it was really enjoyable. I would really suggest any metal fan to check out Avatar, especially Feathers & Flesh. This album would definitely have any metalhead headbanging along from the very first track throughout the entire album.

COMMONWEATHER

Apparitions

U Words by Gianluca D’Elia

M R E V I E W

Are you strong enough to battle your inner demons? Chicago-based alternative rock band Commonweather pose this question on their new EP, Apparitions. The opening track, “The Devil You Know,” sets the tone for an EP that is brooding and pensive. The song starts with an ambient sound until the first guitar comes in, followed by the drums, and builds up more momentum. The next track is the fast-paced “Dismantle Me,” which was also the first single of the EP. The third track, “Cantigny,” was my favorite. This track stood out to me because of its screaming style, especially on the lyrics “It’s in my nature to feel the way I am.” I also thought the guitar and drum parts in this song were exceptional. On the next track, “Stranger In Flesh,” the guitars are at their best, especially in the brief solo sections they have about two minutes into the song. “Asphodel,” the fifth track, is the ballad of the album. The dramatic pause in the middle of the song before the vocals come back in — “I know that this is what you wanted, but I didn’t expect to lose everything; I wear your secrets around my neck” — might be my favorite part of the album. Then, “Asphodel” smoothly flows into the sixth and final track, “Never Whole.” After all the screaming, frenzied excitement of the final track, it ends on a quieter note, with the last minute being only a guitar solo. Though many of the tracks on this album are similar in sound, both the emotions the band puts into them and the quality of the lyrics make each song unique. I look forward to seeing what else Commonweather has in store for the future. Apparitions is an EP that is filled with anguish, but by no means is it depressing — I think anyone who listens to this EP will find something they relate to, and maybe even feel some solidarity with these six tracks.

GREAVER

The Faun

U Words by Danielle Gittleman

M R E V I E

Post-hardcore band Greaver, hailing from Durham, North Carolina, released their debut album The Faun on April 29. The album features ten tracks, and the band was excited to finally have them all heard. The Faun opens with “Last Breath,” which is an awesome intro song. The track begins instrumentally and then features some spoken words over the instrumentals. In a way, the track is kind of spooky but I really thought it was a cool element that you don’t usually hear on many records. The track then flows into “A Poisoned Well,”a song that really shows off the band’s post-hardcore roots. I really enjoyed the switch from unclean to clean vocals and back again. “November Skin” was another one of my favorite tracks — I really enjoyed the lyrics of this song and I felt like they brought a lot of meaning to the song. I could really feel the emotion behind the lyrics. “Third Eye” also featured spoken words over the instrumentals much like the opener, “Last Breath.” I really think the spoken words over the music brings another element to the tracks that a lot of bands don’t have. Another notable track is “Grief Seeds,” which is another song that really shows off the band’s unclean vocals and their post-hardcore sound. The song is really upbeat and I can see any crowd getting off their feet for this song. The album comes to a close with “Hang Up,” another track that is also quite spooky like the first. I really thought that this song was a good one to bring the album to a close. Once the song was over, I really thought the album was complete. Overall, I thought this was a great debut album for the band. Not many bands can do that well from the very beginning and I thought Greaver really pulled it off. I am really interested to see where these guys go next.

True Story

U Words by Melissa Thayer

M R E V I E W

I was so excited to get a chance to listen to Patrick Craig’s debut album! After my interview with him and getting a chance to listen to a few tracks I couldn’t see what else he had in store. And I was not disappointed. For those of you who are unfamiliar with him, Patrick Craig is a London based artist who has truly mastered the punk-folk sound. This is his first album, entitled True Story which has been a few months in the making. “Your Life Jacket is Under Your Seat” is a track I immediately loved. I think what I enjoyed most about this specific song was the lyrics. They were incredibly relatable, and definitely a song you’ll want to quote with a cool picture on Instagram. Really though, I think that this song holds at least one line that you can relate to. I especially loved the line, “yes I’m getting better, but i’m far from my best” in particular. If there’s one song you should check out it’s this one. “Drinking Too Much” began with a soothing acoustic sound. Craig’s vocals throughout this song were soft and really added to the pretty harmony that he created with the guitar. I particularly enjoyed the natural acoustic sound of this song. “Cold Coffee In Cracked Mugs” is another fantastic track. Right from the start you get a piano introduction that added a really nice change of pace in the album. That, accompanied with the lyrics, was a lovely blend that created a unique and beautiful song. One other song I thought was well done was, “Hold My Jacket”. The song features a harmonic chorus that catches your attention right away, and will have the lyrics really sticking with you. Clearly, I really enjoyed this album. Patrick Craig’s biggest talent lays within the lyrics, which are simple yet eloquent. He’s able to take everyday thoughts and turn them into lyrics that everyone can relate to. The acoustic guitar allows him to really showcase that talent by being the perfect accompaniment to his fantastic lyrics. Make sure to check out my interview with Patrick Craig for insight on all the hard work that went into this album and what he has in store!

RIGHT ON, KID!

The Brighter Side of Things

U Words by Melissa Thayer

M R E V I E

The young, pop-punk, band Right on, Kid! released their newly anticipated EP, The Brighter Side of Things on April 22nd, and we’re loving it. The band, which roots are in Albuquerque, New Mexico, formed in 2015 and have quickly taken on the pop-punk scene. The band’s sound is described as “pop-punk” and after listening to a few tracks you can definitely hear the pop-punk origins. However, the EP also has something a little different that really makes it stand out. The strongest aspect that this EP possesses is the catchy choruses, that will definitely have you singing along. I absolutely loved “Blackridge Drive.” It’s definitely my favorite track off the EP. I loved the slow, almost acoustic, beginning and then the change of pace as the song picks up. Like I mentioned, their strongest moments are within the choruses that will definitely get stuck in your head after a few listens. “Sudden Change” was another favorite. Similarly to “Blackridge Drive” the song begins with an acoustic sound. However, unlike the previous song, it keeps with the acoustic vibes throughout most of the song. Some of the most successful musicians, in my opinion, are the ones who can have two different types of music, pop-punk and acoustic pop-punk. Lastly, I enjoyed “Twice Told” which showcases the band’s pop-punk origins. The song displays the band’s talent, especially with the fantastic guitar solos. The catchy melody, beat, and lyrics will without a doubt get you up and dancing along. Overall, I enjoyed the EP. The variety on it was a pleasant surprise, from some of the very heavy pop-punk bands out there. The EP definitely has a little bit of something for everyone. The lyrics are real and raw with a blend of beautiful acoustics. If you love the natural pop-punk sound make sure the give the it a listen.

THEM VS. HER

U Words by Casey Wolfe

M R E V I E W S

Them vs. Her, an alternative rock duo from Long Island, New York, recently released their sophomore full-length album, Swing Sets and Handguns. The album opens with “Too Young,” a slower paced track with intense feeling resembling that of artists such as Dashboard Confessional. This opening track sets a high standard for the rest of the album. The next song has a lighter sound, but equally compelling lyrics. The bridge repeats, “You are him but he’s not you,” before going back into the chorus of “Thirteen years and I don’t know this man/blocking traffic with his hand/looking for a fight he won’t understand/but this is who I am.” The track, “Don’t Let Go” is a ballad and a plea for someone not to give up hope on the vocalists. Lyrics like “I know that you’re waiting/waiting for me/but don’t let go,” define the song and the melodramatic sound provides even more meaning. “Hundred Days” starts out slower and heavier toned. Lyrics such as “Maybe we were meant to be/ but still I left but nothing’s been said.” It is one of the sadder songs on the album because firstly, it is not as upbeat as most of the album and secondly, because the song is about giving up on something desired. “Empty Pockets” starts out with a simple acoustic melody and maintains the slow but heartfelt tempo that the band has created on this album. “Laugh with me/I can finally breathe/play my song/I’ll hum the melody,” defines the mood of the song, which is in part finding the meaning of what’s important. Lyrics also bring a sense of nostalgia to the song. For example, “Forever, forever, you’ll sing to me.” The band finishes off the album with the track, “Headlights”. The track is the most intense on the album as it describes a metaphorical car crash where the singer is fatally injured. “The headlights/the car crashed to the side/he took me away/he took me away,” describing the downfall of a relationship. This is told by the verse, “’So will you stay with me?’/was all you’d ask/and to be honest/it’s what I’d expect/but then I up and left.” With vocals resembling those of bands such as Cartel and music and lyrics that seem to draw influence from artists such as Cute is What We Aim for, Them vs. Her creates a style of music all their own. Although some of their songs are not as fast paced as many pop punk bands, the intensity in their voices and in the lyrics bring the kind of passion that allows them to fit in with the genre. Listening to Swing Sets and Handguns will make listeners nostalgic for former bands that they grew up with and reminiscent of the memories those bands evoked.
