Faithful. Faithful, You are faithful. King of Kings, Lord of Lords, You are faithful. Faithful, You are faithful. King of Kings, Lord of Lords, I worship You. I don’t know about you, but for me this word seems to sing. As a matter of fact so much so that throughout this issue you will see lyrics from across the generations that speaks of God’s faithfulness. For me the mere mention of faithfulness brings to mind Steve Green’s 1988 song He Who Began a Good Work in You. If you are not an 80’s CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) guy familiar with the melodic sounds of Steve Green let me share some thoughts from this song. The song begins with the chorus based on the text from Philippians 1:6. The verse follows with, “If the struggle you’re facing, is slowly replacing your hope with despair…” How

often do we find ourselves in this situation? The struggle seems too great. This feeling has to be highlighted by the recent suicides of two well-known and highly successful people: Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain. In the end it seems all their families had left was the fact that their struggle had become more than they could bear. * “Or the process is long and you’re losing your song in the night…” We live in a world of instant gratification. I want what I want and I want it now. Longsuffering is a concept we read about in the Bible but never expect or seldom prepare to go through. Do you find yourself losing hope when the answers don’t come as quickly as desired? Paul and Silas sat in prison, hope would seem to be in short supply but their song did not fade. As a matter of fact they sang until they were delivered (Acts 16:1640). “You can be sure that the Lord has His hand on you, safe and secure He will never abandon you…” How often have I heard and even said that the safest August/September 2018 | Whitesburg

FAITHFUL place is in the center of God’s will? Yet when I find myself walking through the “valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23), not only do I fear evil but, I begin looking for God as if He has somehow left me. Gently I’m reminded that this is impossible because of the faithful nature of God (2 Timothy 2:13 “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself”). “You are His treasure and He finds His pleasure in you.” I am His. He created me specifically to have a relationship with me. He draws me to Himself and I can be sure that the cross is there for my story (2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord

is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance”). What a word! What hope is bound up in faithfulness! As you read this issue I hope that you find a renewed confidence in the Lord’s faithfulness to you and that your heart will sing because Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father. * Please do not take this as an analysis of their belief or mental health. Of the former, I can not know their heart and would never take their final action on earth as a sign thereof; and the latter is real and those of faith must be aware of the pitfalls it can bring.

Great

is our

Faithfulness by Harold Fanning

John Harper was a Scottish

evangelist in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. On April 15, 1912, John, his sister, and his six-year-old daughter (his wife had died) found themselves on the fated ship, the Titanic. Survivors later reported that as the Titanic began to sink, Harper admonished people to be prepared to die. He made sure his sister and daughter were in a lifeboat even as he continued to share the Gospel with whoever would listen. And when he found himself floating in the icy water near another man, Harper asked, “Are you saved?” The desperate man replied, “No, I’m not saved!” Harper shouted, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved!” One report says Harper, knowing he could not survive long in the icy water, removed his life jacket and threw it to another person with the words,

“You need this more than I do!” Moments later, Harper disappeared beneath the water. Four years after the tragedy at a Titanic survivor's meeting in Ontario, Canada, one survivor recounted his interaction with Harper in the middle of the icy waters of the Atlantic. He testified he was clinging to ship debris when Harper swam up to him, twice challenging him with a biblical invitation to "believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved." He rejected the offer once. Yet given the second chance and with miles of water beneath his feet, the man gave his life to Christ. Then as Harper succumbed to his watery grave, this new believer was rescued by a returning lifeboat. As he concluded his remarks at the Ontario meeting of survivors he simply stated, "I am the last convert of John Harper." (Chicago Church Media, 2012) August/September 2018 | Whitesburg

GREAT IS OUR FAITHFULNESS Faithfulness is an interesting human concept. It is amazing what people consider as so important that their entire lives are built around their perception. Faithfulness to a spouse, career, athletic team, hobby, political party, or even automobiles or motorcycles are examples of things to which many give their allegiance. Faithfulness, in its simplest term, hinges upon what we determine as significant in our lives. Please do not misunderstand - we should be faithful to our spouse, employer, church, country, etc. The problem lies in confusion over what is considered the PRIORITY of our faithfulness. The scriptures are uncompromisingly specific concerning the sole object of our allegiance. For example, in Matthew 16:24 Jesus taught, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.'” He also said in Luke 14:26,

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother and wife and children and brethren and sisters, and even his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” These verses make it clear that the key to spiritual victory is a faithfulness that is totally committed to God fully and completely. Unless our faithfulness has the correct object, nothing else in our lives truly counts for much. Faithfulness to God is not optional nor can it simply be added to our list of other personal loyalties. The walk and life of a Christian is often oppressed with adversity and it takes tenacity and resolve to stand firm during these demanding times. But as believers we are to remain faithful to Christ as the first fruit of our love and thankfulness to Him for salvation. Like John Harper, it is saying “no” to our own desires and choosing rather to be faithful to Christ in what He has entrusted to us.

A HYMN FOR ORDINARY CHRISTIANS

Great Is Thy Faithfulness by Bob Kauflin

The story behind Great is Thy

Faithfulness should encourage every Christian who thinks of their life as ordinary. There’s no tragic story (think It Is Well by Horatio Spafford) associated with this hymn. It’s just the fruit of a faithful man with a simple faith in a faithful God. Thomas Chisholm, who sometimes described himself as “just an old shoe,” was born in a Kentucky log cabin in 1866. He was converted when he was 27, became a pastor at 36, but had to retire one year later due to poor health. He spent the majority of the rest of his life as a life insurance agent in New Jersey. He died in 1960 at the age of 93. During his life he wrote over 1200 poems, most of which no one will ever hear. 14

WhitesburgBaptist.org

But back in 1923, at the “beyond his prime” age of 57, Thomas Chisholm sent a few of his poems to William Runyan at the Hope Publishing Company. One of them was Great is Thy Faithfulness, based on Lamentations 3:22-23. "The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Runyan was particularly moved by Great is Thy Faithfulness and sought to set it to a melody that would reflect the response of wonder and gratefulness to God’s faithfulness conveyed in the lyrics. Apparently, he succeeded. The song quickly became a favorite at Moody Bible Institute,

and later George Beverly Shea sang it at Billy Graham crusades. Now it’s known all over the world and has been used to encourage millions of Christians to trust in a faithful God. Pretty impressive spiritual fruit from a life insurance agent. When Chisholm was 75, he wrote in a letter: “My income has not been large at any time due to impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me many wonderful displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.” The hymn has three verses and a chorus. Verse 1 speaks of God’s faithfulness revealed in His Word, and is adapted from James 1:17: Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Verse 2 tells us of God’s faithfulness revealed in creation. The seasons, the sun, moon, and stars all continue on their courses perfectly, orderly, quietly – guided by God’s faithful hand, without any help from us. Verse 3 reminds us of God’s faithfulness revealed in our lives. He pardons all our sins, fills us with His peace, assures of His presence, gives us strength, hope, and blessings to numerous to count! Whatever challenges, trials, or disappointments you might be facing right now, this hymn reminds us that God’s promises are true, that He never changes, that His compassions never fail, and that His faithfulness to us in Christ Jesus is more than good— it’s GREAT! God doesn’t need incredibly gifted or wildly famous people to proclaim those truths from His Word. Just faithful ones.

The faithfulness of the

Lord, an attribute that I’ll never tire of praising Him for, leads me to think immediately of the song Faithfulness by Hillsong Worship. It is a remake of the old hymn, Great Is Thy Faithfulness with a fresh melody and modern arrangement. In my life, the faithfulness of God is a quality of His character that I relate to more than others. I think at the very base of it is that I know how I myself am unfaithful and completely human. I let others down, I don’t always keep my word, and I am not always faithful to Him especially! I am imperfect and sinful, and yet God still loves me, cares for me and shows me His unfailing promises. A line in the chorus of the song, “I lift my eyes, I won’t forget how great Your faithfulness” is one that my soul aspires to live out. However when troubles come, how easy 18

WhitesburgBaptist.org

it becomes for my flesh to take over and forget all that God has promised. Just knowing that about myself, compared to the love of Christ that is unfailing, allows me to hold Him in an even higher esteem. The juxtaposition of my unfaithfulness to His perfect faithfulness is something that always leads to gratitude and worship in my heart. What really touches me about the song is the incredible need it portrays to recall constantly that Jesus is our hope. I believe the writer of the song knew that our incredible need as believers is to continually remember God’s goodness, faithfulness, and trust Him completely, regardless of our current circumstance. We need eyes that see our situation as God sees it, instead of looking through a worldly lens marred with the unfaithfulness of humanity. When the tempests

FAITHFULNESS stir, I want to be able to recall the words of 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand

slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

From rising sun till Kingdom come Your faithful love is unfailing Though shadows turn and tempests stir Still You oh God are unchanging Through every hour I will recall All my hope is Jesus

Great is Your faithfulness, Great is Your faithfulness I lift my eyes I won’t forget how great Your faithfulness When battle’s near I will not fear Your promises are unshaken My faith is sure of nothing more Than Christ alone my portion

There’ll be a season for joy and weeping In everything our God is faithful His arms are open, I will come running Now and always our God is faithful

The

Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast. Psalms 119:90

WhitesburgBaptist.org

The other day my family and

I were at Wal-Mart® and were approached by an older man, probably in his seventies. After a brief conversation he told us he was battling terminal cancer. With a warm smile, he gave my family some coins, Indian Head Wheat Pennies, each being about 140 years old. He told us they were worth 4 or 5 dollars each, and he wanted to give them to us. We were impressed and he had our attention! Then he began to tell us about God’s faithfulness, how God is faithful even during terminal cancer, and how God is faithful to the very end, to the last breath we breathe. He told us, “Never doubt God’s faithfulness. When you look at these coins, be reminded of how great God is, and how He is faithful – remember His never ending faithfulness to us.” I silently wondered, how can God be faithful to him? He

must be a grandfather, have a wife and children… How is God being faithful to them? But I was reminded of a verse, “All things are for His glory.” Yes, somewhere in the midst of this suffering, there was glory, God’s glory. That man was glorifying God by sharing God’s faithfulness to him. His testimony of faithfulness brought glory to God, right there in Wal-Mart®! I tightened my hand around one of the coins, and promised myself to remember the man, pray for him, and be encouraged to share God’s faithfulness with others. How are you going to share God’s faithfulness with others? Are you going to be a light in your corner of the world? Are you going to be like this man, who is looking forward to the day when his "faith shall be sight"? I hope that we can add to the man’s mission and share God’s faithfulness with others.

WHEN

faithless

faithful MEETS

by Vicki Hereford

There have been many

times in my life when my faith was tested. You might even say that I was without faith… Not without faith that Christ is who He says He is, but lacking the faith to hold on and hold out for that rescuing hand. From trying to resolve things by taking matters into my own hands to ending up in a puddle of tears on my floor, I was Ms. Fix-It. I have learned that we grow through the struggles in our lives, and those times are an indication of our God who is faithful in ALL things. It reinforces just how faithful and enduring God is to us. There is a song I love, and most know it as sung by Dottie Peoples… “He’s an On-Time God (Yes He Is)”. Part of the song says that He may not come when you want Him, but He will 26

WhitesburgBaptist.org

be there right on time. God is faithful through it all – grief, depression, financial problems, relationships, job issues – all of it. But we are so conditioned to fix everything on our own, without any help from anyone, that we even decide not to tap into the endless resources, faithfulness, and love that God has for His children. I remember so many times when God has proven Himself faithful – but I remember one time vividly because it was a time when I was so very selfsufficient, I essentially told God that I did not need His help. That was probably not my finest moment. I was at church back home in Florida and Beth Moore was doing our Mother’s Day Women’s Breakfast. We have hosted everyone from Beth

Moore to Jennifer Rothschild to Priscilla Shirer to Pam Tebow (yes, Timmy’s mom). So, moms and daughters were known to visit with us on those occasions. On this occasion, we were all challenged to live a palms-up lifestyle, meaning that we gave everything to God for His glory and for our good. I thought, “OK – I can do this, no problem!” I gave Him everything – my family, my “stuff”, my hopes and dreams, my business, my clients, my hurts and disappointments. There, like I said, Lord… No problem. And then He asked for my personal finances. But, but… I’m really GOOD at that. I have single mom budget skills, and I am proud of that! Besides, Lord, remember? I have my MBA with a concentration in finance. I’ve got this! And we were off to the races. There was that P-word. Proud. Pride is the root of sin and when that root takes hold, disaster is not far away from us. You have heard that fear and faith cannot occupy the same space? Well, pride and humility don’t go together, either. Do you remember the economic downturn in 2008? Well, it hit the real estate market

hard in 2007 and the bursting of that bubble was like an avalanche for all other financial services markets. Business owners struggled for well over five years. Some are just now seeing progress again. People on the fringes who have not been in finance during the peaks AND the troughs of the business cycle have no idea how it can test your faith – faith in your own abilities and faith in the God who loves you. God was about to show me that He wanted all of me and that included my finances. Along the way, though, His faithfulness would be evident. That economic downturn was devastating for financial services professionals. One of my contracts was 100% of first year premiums. Pretty good, right? Well, when those belts tighten, you can make 100% all day long – but 100% of zero is still zero. I looked for work to get us through until people could plan financially again. The years passed… late 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010. Four years. It might as well have been forty years in the wilderness. Yet, God was faithful. Car, gas for it, a comfortable house with

WHEN FAITHLESS MEETS FAITHFUL great neighbors, food on the table, loving family and friends. I accumulated enough graduate finance hours to teach at the college level. In addition to my existing clients and a smattering of new ones over those years, I expanded my marketability and could do two things I loved: advise and teach. How many times was God going to show me His faithfulness? In 2013, we felt compelled to move to North Alabama. I would have to start over with no natural market here. He provided. Well, here we are in 2018, with a new set of challenges and opportunities in our family dynamics. Yet, God is still faithful. Is my business where I want it to be now? Tough question. The Type A personality in me says no. The personality that has learned that God’s timing is not my own says yes. I want what God has for me, and I want to be obedient in all things, because He has been faithful in all things.

That was evident when, in 2011, I taught business courses and led a program for a career college. In the summer of 2011, I taught International Finance for my alma mater. That August, Liberty University Online picked me up as a finance instructor. Seven years later, LUO still lets me do what I love – and I actually get paid for it! I still have a growing financial services business, too. Being able to work in the two professions I love is a tremendous blessing, but it was and is not a straight path. One of my mentors in business told me often that the growth is always in the struggle. Isn’t that true in all areas of life? Through it all, God shows His faithfulness to us in so many ways. If you are in that wilderness and your faith is weak, take heart. You may only see the next step in front of you, but God is working all things together for your good and for His glory. And yes, He is indeed faithful.

Vicki Hereford is blessed to teach for Liberty University Online 28

and work in the field of finance. A follower of Christ, who left the ninety-nine to rescue me. So unworthy, but so eternally grateful for His faithfulness.
