The multifaceted genius of Leonardo da Vinci continues to amaze and fascinate the world centuries after his death. The recent decision to unbind the pages of the famous Codex Atlanticus, one of the greatest collections of da Vinci drawings and studies, held at Milan’s Biblioteca Ambrosiana, has allowed the public and scholars easier access to the ideas and thoughts of the great Renaissance genius. This book, which reproduces some of the finest pages of the Codex, examines da Vinci’s interest in many different fields, from military fortifications to anatomy, from war machines to musical instruments, from flight to botany. Halfway between a theoretical exercise and a specific practical purpose, Leonardo’s work emerges with all its visual force from the pages of this book, offering the reader further proof of the modern character of his ideas and providing a tangible sign of the greatness of a timeless genius. The high-quality resolution of the photographic reproductions of the Codex pages have enabled us to reproduce in this book details admired before only by scholars. The final section of the book contains a collection of descriptive summaries of the characteristics and contents of the plates of the Codex reproduced in the volume, accompanied by QR codes allowing access to multimedia content such as 3-D reconstructions of Leonardo’s machines, graphic reconstructions and in depth examination of the techniques used in his sketches. MARCO NAVONI, Canon of the Milan Cathedral and of the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, since 1991 has been a Doctor of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, where he is also Director of the Pinacoteca and Director of the Accademia Ambrosiana’s Centro di Studi Santambrosiani. FRANCO BRUZZI has been a member of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana’s College of Doctors since 1992, and has been Prefect of the same institution since 2007. He is a member of the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” wrote William Shakespeare. And many other poets and writers have dedicated lines to these beautiful flowers that have always adorned and embellished gardens and houses. Wonderful petals, a thorny stem, warm but at the same time delicate colours and an enchanting and intoxicating fragrance. These are the secrets of the rose, of which, however, the true essence remains elusive. A master of still life photography, Fabio Petroni, has turned his attention to roses in all their infinite manifestations. Through his lens, he has endeavoured to capture those aspects and details that make this flower, the symbol of love, grace, and the most intimate secrets, unique. Spectacular pictures, an elegant editorial format, wonderful close-ups and a final section that features the history and characteristics of the varieties of roses photographed. These are the secrets of this large-format publication, in which roses are the absolute protagonists and in which the pages merge with the petals. FABIO PETRONI, after taking up photography, has worked with the top professionals of the sector. His professional career path led him to specialize in portraits and still life, fields in which he distinguished himself for his intuitive and meticulous style. He works with the main advertising agencies and has authored numerous campaigns for prestigious, internationally renowned companies and firms. For White Star, he has produced Horses. Master Portraits (2010), Mutt’s Life! (2011), Cocktails (2012) and Supercats (2012). NATALIA FEDELI works for Gardenia, the first Italian monthly magazine about plants, flowers and green lifestyle, editing the section on floral decorations, florists, flower designers and artists/craftsmen engaged in the world of flowers. Her cultural background, personal interests and experience have always revolved around her love of nature, and all that is beautiful, two aspects she is also involved in professionally.

KEY SELLING POINTS An original approach and spectacular pictures with great visual impact by Fabio Petroni, a highly skilled still life photographer. Magnificent and magical close-ups, enhanced by the large format. A chapter on the history and characteristics of the rose varieties featured in the book. A book for flower lovers, but also for those who can not resist the magnetic charm of roses. An original and precious gift to go with, or even to replace “the usual bunch of flowers.” 6 WHITE STAR PUBLISHERS AUTUMN 2012

Keith Richards A Rock’n’Roll Life EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS TEXT BY BILL MILKOWSKI

KEY SELLING POINTS A very accurate illustrated monograph that is the result of years of research and interviews. Rich in illustrations including photographs never published before. An authoritative work of international standing by one of the most renowned U.S. music critics.

For half a century he has been the heart and soul of the world’s greatest rock’n’roll band. A riff master of the highest order, his direct, incisive and catchy licks have energized such timeless rock anthems as “Satisfaction,” “Start Me Up,” “Brown Sugar,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Honky Tonk Women.” A disciple of such great guitarists and proto-rockers as Scotty Moore, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters, Keith Richards has forged a personal vocabulary on the instrument that has influenced generations of aspiring rockers. And as the songwriting partner of lifelong friend and frequent foe Mick Jagger, he formed an indelible team that has secured a spot in the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. The personal life of this larger-than-life rock star and bona fide guitar hero has been plagued by heroin addiction and excessive recreational drug use, which transformed his one-time baby face into a grizzled visage that bears the scars of a road warrior’s life. And yet, he is still here. The ultimate rock ’n’ roll survivor, Keith Richards is still rocking and rolling after all these years. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS is an expert in photo editing and image creation and has supervised the drafting of texts for numerous photographic volumes. Worthy of special note among her accomplishments are the successful CubeBook series; Fidel Castro. El Líder Máximo: A Life in Pictures; John Lennon. In His Life; Fur and Feathers: An Unusual Farm; Lingerie; A Matter of Style: Intimate Portraits of 10 Women Who Changed Fashion; and Rolling Stones. 50 Years of Rock. BILL MILKOWSKI is a Manhattan-based freelance writer who contributes to several music publications, including Jazz Times, Jazziz, Absolute Sound, Jazzthing (Germany), Guitar Club (Italy) and Guitar (Japan). His writing has also appeared in Down Beat, Guitar Player, Bass Player, Acoustic Guitar, Pulse!, MIX and Interview. He is the author of JACO: The Extraordinary and Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius; Swing It! An Annotated History of Jive; Rockers, Jazzbos & Visionaries; Legends of Jazz ( White Star, 2010). In 2011, he co-authored Here And Now! The Autobiography of Pat Martino. In 2004, he received the Helen Oakley DanceRobert Palmer Award for Excellence in Newspaper, Magazine, Online Feature or Review Writing from the Jazz Journalists Association and in 2011 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the JJA.

Tragedies and Mysteries of Rock’n’Roll TEXT BY MICHELE PRIMI

TRAGEDIES AND MYSTERIES OF ROCK’N’ROLL Michele Primi Format: 26 x 30 cm 272 pages 232 colour photographs Hardcover with Jacket 978 88 544 0677 3

John Lennon said: “We’re going to live, or we’re going to die. If we’re dead, we’re going to have to deal with that. If we’re alive, we’re going to have to deal with being alive.” Is there a curse on Rock ’n’ Roll? Is talent so powerful that it destroys? The death of one of the purest musical talents in recent years, Amy Winehouse, has reopened this and many other questions. The “Club 27” really does exist, and it includes some of the best musicians of all time, very young adults who created works of art but who were themselves overwhelmed by art. This volume tells their story: from the first, Robert Johnson, who is said to have sold his soul to the devil for the gift of Blues, on to Ian Curtis and Kurt Cobain, and passing through the runaway lives of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, the mysterious death of Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, and the fatality of “the day the music died” in 1959, when Buddy Holly’s airplane crashed. There is suicide as the only way to affirm oneself; there is transgression taken to extremes; there is mystery and senseless evil, manifesting in the pistol shot that killed John Lennon. There are stories that read like a detective thriller, like those of Bobby Fuller or Jim Morrison, and the touching human story of Freddie Mercury; there are Bob Marley, Keith Moon, and the absurd destiny that binds Tim and Jeff Buckley; but above all there is a lot of great Rock music. Because, as Neil Young sings in Hey Hey My My, “Rock’n’roll is here to stay. It’s better to burn out than to fade away.” MICHELE PRIMI is a journalist and television writer. He was born in Milan in 1973 and he currently lives in Barcelona, Spain. He writes for Virgin Radio and Virgin TV and he also writes about music and Rock’n’Roll culture for the magazines Rolling Stone Italia, GQ and Riders. He is the author of the monograph Queen and he has contributed to the book Legendary rock songs published by White Star.

KEY SELLING POINTS The full account of all the amazing and mysterious disappearances on the Rock music scene. A compelling text that investigates and describes the background of the tragic events, with gripping and dramatic images. A unique opportunity to learn about the personal habits and private lives of many music celebrities. A visual journey to discover music legends united by a tragic destiny. 10 WHITE STAR PUBLISHERS AUTUMN 2012

Hero Dogs Secret Missions and Selfless Service PREFACE BY RONALD L. AIELLO TEXT BY LANCE M. BACON

KEY SELLING POINTS The case in the news: a dog in the Navy SEALs participates in the mission against bin Laden and becomes a hero. A theme until now virtually unknown to most people, developed with passion and enthusiasm by two of the top experts in the field. A thorough military and historical study, accompanied by thrilling photographs. A volume dedicated to dog lovers, but also for fans of history and military strategy. The charm and emotional involvement in true stories of dog heroes.

From World War I to the present day, war dogs have served alongside the most valiant warriors in history’s most decisive battles. Like the battlefields to which they are called, the war dogs’ roles have evolved over the years. Missions have varied from landmine and tunnel detection to trackers and scouts. Today, war dogs are a primary asset when locating improvised explosive devices, the No. 1 killer of coalition forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are members of Special Operations teams conducting clandestine missions and they help guard some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists. This photographic book opens with a salute to the history of combat canines of the past century. It then uses illustration and insight to take the reader inside the careful selection process and months of rigorous training required to join the ranks of these elite “military working dogs.” Hundreds of never-before-seen photos reveal the lifelong bonds formed in the heat of battle as tales of selfless service in Iraq and Afghanistan are told by the war dogs handlers and commanders who were there. Many of these war dogs have earned recognition for their heroic actions. Hundreds struggle with wounds and post-traumatic stress. Dozens died in the line of duty. These are their stories. RONALD L. AIELLO served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1970. During this period Ron had the honor of serving with the First Marine Scout Dog Platoon. In the year 2000, Ron and four other Vietnam Veteran dog handlers formed The United States War Dogs Association, Inc., which is a nonprofit organization of former and current U.S. military dog handlers and supporting members. The United States War Dogs Association is committed to promoting the long history of the military service dogs, establishing permanent war dog memorials, and educating the public about the invaluable service of these military working dogs to our country. LANCE M. BACON is senior staff writer for Army Times, an independent weekly newspaper serving U.S. Army personnel and their families. He covers Army leadership, weaponry, training and tactics. His combat coverage in Afghanistan includes an awardwinning piece on the Battle of Roberts Ridge. Bacon has served as city/military editor of the Jacksonville (N.C.) Daily News and managing editor of the Kinston (N.C.) Free Press.

Shangri-La Along the Tea Road to Lhasa PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICHAEL YAMASHITA

KEY SELLING POINTS An intimate journey through Tibet and along the Tea Route, between legend and mystery. A rich series of illustrations. Exciting and spectacular images by Michael Yamashita, one of National Geographic’s most loved expert photographers. A unique opportunity, not to be missed, to discover an ancient world that is slowly fading. The perfect book for all who love travel, adventure, and photography.

The legendary Chamagudao, the Tea-Horse Road, winds through dizzying mountain passes, across famed rivers like the Mekong and the Yangtze and past monasteries and meadows in a circuitous route from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces in western China to the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa. Actually a network of roads, trails and highways, rather than one distinct route, the Chamagudao once stretched for almost 1,400 miles (2350 km) – a conduit along which the historic trade between the mighty Chinese Empire and the nomadic Tibetans linked remote villages and ethnic groups. The Chinese military needed strong horses for their wars against Mongol invaders from the north, and the fiercely religious Tibetans desired tea both for sacred rituals and sustenance. Once tea was introduced into Tibet around the 10th century, demand for it grew. Tea soon became fundamental for Tibetans, especially when combined with their other staple, yak butter. But with Tibet’s extreme temperatures and altitudes, tea cultivation on a large scale was impossible. This set the stage for the tea-horse trade, which flourished from the 11th century, along the Chamagudao, and went on until the 1950s. Today, a homely caterpillar infected by a parasitic fungus has replaced the horse trade in Tibet. The yatsu gonbu is prized for its medicinal qualities. Now Tibetan nomads drive Land Cruisers and motorcycles instead of riding horses, thanks to the profits they make collecting and selling the miracle mushroom worth more than gold. So trade continues, even though relics of the tea-horse trade are becoming harder to find. Following the Chamagudao, this book is a rare and enchanting look into the changing world of Tibet – both ancient and modern, sacred and secular, the rarefied and the gritty – before the legends and mysteries of the Tea-Horse Road disappear into the Tibetan mist. MICHAEL YAMASHITA has been a regular contributor to National Geographic Magazine since 1979. He has received several industry awards, including those from the National Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year, the New York Art Directors Club, and the Asian-American Journalists Association. ELIZABETH BIBB is a writer and editor who works in both magazine and book publishing. Bibb is a frequent collaborator with her husband, photographer Michael Yamashita.

Italy is enchanting, bewitching. It casts a spell. It is easy for visitors to fall in love with Italy because every minute of every day they spend there has something to offer them, to appeal to all of their senses, whether they are visiting its museums or flying over its rooftops, bell towers, domes, endless plains, rolling hills and majestic mountains. A wealth of beauty unfolds, the work of Man and Nature that belongs to all: visible, accessible and famous. Beauty that lies in the historical and architectural heritage to be found in churches and abbeys, in historic town centers and museums, in castles and archaeological sites, a heritage steeped in ancient history. It is also the beauty of the natural heritage that lies in mountain roads, national parks and idyllic beaches. But that is not all. In Italy there are remote landscapes and secrets that must be discovered, sniffed out and at times tracked down. There are monasteries, hermitages, watchtowers, treasure collections, regional traditions, arts and traditional trades. Aroma of the World A Journey into the Mysteries and Delights of Coffee TEXT BY ELISABETTA ILLY

AROMA OF THE WORLD A Journey into the Mysteries and Delights of Coffee Elisabetta Illy Format: 26 x 30 cm 216 pages 175 colour photographs Hardcover with Jacket 978 88 544 0716 9

GBP 19.99

Coffee is the best known beverage in the world, but its origins are shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that the plant’s native soil is Ethiopia and that from there it crossed Africa and reached Arabia. It spread to Europe in the seventeenth century and was then shipped to the Americas and the Far East. From the nineteenth century coffee became a global beverage and its success has shown no signs of diminishing since then. Elisabetta Illy has written a book combining a travel journal, describing areas where coffee is cultivated (Ethiopia, India, Brazil and Colombia), with the stories, rituals, and traditions associated with coffee preparation. The coffee bean is the undisputed star of the book and in order to provide a picture that is as rounded as possible, the author also discusses its social impact, its relationship with our physical and psychological health and the tasting techniques that bring out the infinite array of subtle flavours of an espresso and other kinds of coffee. The book also provides tips on how to make a perfect coffee in the home and how to identify a properly made espresso in a café. From moka and filter coffee to Turkish coffee and coffees made with the Napolitana percolator and with the melior system, the author also examines the customs in various countries that make coffee drinking a veritable rite. A rite which can be repeated in the kitchen too, to make Gianfranco Vissani’s exclusive creations, which turn the coffee bean into an important ingredient in amazing recipes both sweet and savoury. ELISABETTA LATTANZIO ILLY was born in Trieste in 1966 and graduated in International Economics at Trieste University in 1990. She has been a journalist since 1999 and writes regularly for BMM (a quarterly magazine on culture and lifestyle), Monsieur, SpiritoDiVino and I Viaggi del Sole (a monthly supplement of Il Sole 24 Ore).

KEY SELLING POINTS A passage through time, back to the coffee bean’s origins and around the world, tracing its journey from its countries of origin to the cup. A passion for coffee has always been part of Elisabetta Illy's life: becoming a member of the Illy family has enabled the author to share this passion with the leading experts in the field, both in Italy and abroad. A selection of exclusive recipes proposed by Gianfranco Vissani, a leading international chef. 22 WHITE STAR PUBLISHERS AUTUMN 2012

Harley-Davidson TEXT BY PASCAL SZYMEZAK

KEY SELLING POINTS A must for all Harley-Davidson lovers. All the models that have created an American myth. The most outlandish and most famous custom models. A chapter dedicated to the incredible decorations used for customizing bikes. The most famous rallies. A compact volume containing over a century of HarleyDavidson history, illustrated with 390 stunning photographs. A text field with passion written by Pascal Szymezak, a Harley rider before he was a journalist.

Since their inception in 1903, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have asserted and established themselves as powerful and reliable motorcycles, quickly becoming an outright myth for fans and lovers of biking. American par excellence, over the years they have been able to resist first the British, then the Japanese rivals, renewing their image and proposing new models, which today confidently face the challenges of the new millennium. Many of the Harley-Davidson motorcycles have become true “classics” – Hydra Glide, Duo Glide, Electra Glide, Softail, Dyna, Sportster, V-Rod – with reproductions in an endless series of variants, but the sound their Vtwin engine can produce is unique and distinctive. Then there is the universe of customizations: personalized and unique models, for which Harley-Davidson has always been a pioneer and leader. Not to mention the atmosphere of the many rallies, by now spanning the four corners of the globe and uniting an ever greater number of enthusiastic Harley owners. The diverse gatherings are linked by the fact that they exhibit all sorts of gadgets related to their beloved brand. Enriched with texts by an expert journalist/Harley biker and with beautiful images of the Milwaukee motorcycles, this volume is dedicated to all aspects of the Harley-Davidson world, and especially to its most successful models. PASCAL SZYMEZAK, a French journalist who specializes in motorcycles, began by collaborating with various periodicals and magazines related to motorcycling and motorcycle travel. He later became editor-in-chief of a monthly magazine focusing on the HarleyDavidson motorcycle, the new American models, its history and trips around the country. Since 1987 he has edited the Nice Matin’s weekly column on motorcycles. He also collaborates on Hachette’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle collection, including the Joe Bar Team. He is the author and co-author of various books on HarleyDavidson motorcycles, such as: Harley-Davidson A Way of Life (1997) and Harley-Davidson The Legendary Models (2011).

Porsche Insight The technical Illustrations since 1975 TEXT BY LARS DÖHMANN AND NORBERT SCHÄFER

KEY SELLING POINTS The technology of the famous automobile maker, as you have never seen it before. The detailed plates executed by high-level technical designers, as ordered by Porsche, make this volume both one-of-a-kind and official. All the models beginning from 1975, illustrated with more than 170 plates. Album format and extremely high-quality prints highlight the detail of the illustrations. A must for all book lovers: a wonderful gift for yourself or for others.

This volume is a unique contemporary work that portrays the development of individual Porsche models by means of the technical illustrations produced by Technical Art for the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer. The professional graphics stand out for their immense wealth of details in portraying complex technical constructions down to the smallest cable connection. In these elaborate illustrations, the progressive technology and pioneering innovation for which Porsche automobiles are renowned are literally transparent – an extraordinary visual experience. The story of these graphic illustrations also reflects the exciting technical developments in this field. Today electronic data processing has conquered almost all areas of everyday life. But in 1975 technical illustrations were still made by working from photographs, using brushes and paint applied by hand. Each of the extremely precise illustrations in this book is the result of several weeks’ work and so accurate in scale that they are even used in restoration work to ensure the exact reproduction of the original. This work documents the development of the graphic rendering of these elaborate illustrations over the years since 1975, from the traditional approach of brushes and paint to digital conversion using Quantel Paintbox, and then the entrance into the world of 3-D with Silicon Graphics work stations. LARS DÖHMANN is a motor journalist who cares passionately about his subject. For decades his articles have been published in magazines; a freelance journalist since 1995, he has also worked for the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Oldtimer Catalog. In addition, Döhman is organizer of the “2000 Kilometers through Germany” Oldtimer Rally. In his free time he looks after a 1979 Porsche 911 SC 30 Targa. NORBERT SCHÄFER set up his first studio in 1965. Even then his illustrations demonstrated his love of detail and, most of all, his “X-ray vision,” the ability to visualize that is so indispensable for technical illustration, together with his skills at realizing spatial arrangements and perspectives from blueprints and photographs. In 1975, together with his business partner and friend of many years, Ludwig Eberl (died 1995), who shared his passion for technical subjects, he founded Technical Art, and this was the beginning of the collaboration with Porsche. Today he still works there in his capacity as owner-manager.

Legendary Cars Cars That Made History From the Early Days to the 21st Century TEXT BY LARRY EDSALL

LEGENDARY CARS Cars that Made History From the Early Days to the 21st Century Larry Edsall Format: 27 x 31 cm 304 pages 262 colour photographs Hardcover with Jacket 978 88 544 0707 7

GBP 25.00

Veteran and vintage automobiles take us on a journey down the roads of history to the birth, infancy, and development of today’s indispensable, stylish and efficient automobile. In the early days, automobiles were little more than carriages propelled by sputtering internal combustion engines rather than drawn by horses (frequently needed to pull broken-down automobiles to the nearest workshop). Back then the mechanical parts and the passengers were protected by what to us today look like biscuit tins (usually black), though these later took on rounded, even sculptural forms. After the automobile made the transition from the biscuit tin to the recognizable modern automobile the journey speeds up and concentrates on the most important models produced in terms of social, aesthetic and technological advances, which usually occurred in combination. At the end of this text-and-illustrations journey, there is a peek into the future to see what types of vehicles will be sitting outside our homes in the years to come. From dream cars to road cars, this book brings together pictures and descriptions of the most stirring blends of technology, art, beauty and adventure. It is a photographic journey through the history of the world’s most beautiful automobiles. LARRY EDSALL, a specialist automobile journalist, has worked for 12 years for AutoWeek Magazine, the most prestigious American weekly dedicated to driving prototypes and production cars for well over half a million miles. In 2003, he wrote Concept Cars for White Star.

KEY SELLING POINTS Enhanced by a very elegant layout of more than 260 photographs. The history of the automobile from the early days to the 21st century. A magnificent book for automobile lovers. Authored by specialists. The latest updating: 5 new models, 16 more pages.

American Cars TEXT BY MATT DELORENZO

LEGENDARY AMERICAN CARS Matt DeLorenzo Format: 22.5 x 25.8 cm 332 pages 389 colour photographs Hardcover with Jacket 978 88 544 0709 1

Many books provide a basic catalog of American automobiles from ca. 1900 to the present day. This volume takes a very different approach: in addition to detailing engineering and styling advances, it also presents the broad social and economic environment and demonstrates how and why the automobile has evolved and thrived so strongly throughout the United States. Cars may be a universal product, but that’s not to say that they are the same everywhere. Viewed from afar, American cars (and trucks) look too big, have engines that are too large, and are extravagant for solo commuting. Considering the American continent’s vast extent, its wide, open roads, readily available parking and low energy prices, it is understandable why American automobiles differ in design, engineering, and size from those found elsewhere in the world. Beginning with the automobile’s early days and Henry Ford’s invention of the assembly line and continuing until modern times, this intriguing, richly illustrated volume traces the entire history of American automobiles. Whether luxury-market or average-family models, the American car is a dream possession and cult object that is famous and desired throughout the world.

GBP 25.00 MATT DELORENZO was named Detroit Editor for Road & Track Magazine in January of 1998 after an eight-year stint as editor of AutoWeek magazine. His tenure as editor of America’s only weekly car enthusiast magazine spanned half his 16-year career with AutoWeek’s publisher, Crain Communications. DeLorenzo has written two books, Volkswagen New Beetle and Chrysler Concept Cars: The Designs that Saved the Company, the latter awarded “Best of Books 2001” by the International Automotive Media Association, and has co-authored two other books with noted automotive journalist John Lamm on the Chrysler PT Cruiser and the Hummer H2. DeLorenzo is a founding member of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards.

KEY SELLING POINTS A comprehensive survey with historic and contemporary photographs, design drawings and documents. The development history, technical specifications and production figures of each individual model. From the top automotive journalist Matt DeLorenzo.

NEW EDITION ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Masterpieces of Modern Architecture TEXT BY VARIOUS AUTHORS Architecture has always been the faithful mirror of society’s most important transformations. By the same token, modern architecture, which has broken away from established trends and has a wealth of technology at its disposal, affirms new values that cater to the psychological and spiritual progress of humanity. This innovative work’s timeline starts with the end of World War II and the ensuing rift in international architecture and urban planning. Through highly informative images, the book conveys the new representative languages of the postwar era, with its need for reconstruction and its quest for a new monumentality, and examines the new trends that emerged up to the beginning of the 21st century. Photography has been used as an extraordinary medium to explore this new world of architecture, with its ethereal and sometimes colossal forms that are utterly rational and surprisingly well balanced. Essays written by experts, accompanied by high-quality photographs that perfectly capture the multifaceted spirit of modern architecture, illustrate the complex tapestry of the international movements of the 20th century, from technological expressiveness to a new modernity, investigating meg-astructures, advanced technology, postmodernism, minimalism and deconstructionism. Sprawling museums and hyperfunctional airports, enormous shopping centers and futuristic libraries, sports arenas and immense university complexes are presented – along with their brilliant creators – on this surprising journey through forms, materials, colours, ideas and symbols. ART AND ARCHITECTURE NEW EDITION

Building Arabia Expanding the Limits of Architecture TEXT BY LAURA DAGLIO AND OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI The extent of development in the Arabian Peninsula has been phenomenal: this region now has some of the most advanced contemporary architecture in the world. During the last few years, in order to adjust to the imminent depletion of the natural resources that have provided the region’s wealth for the past decades the countries on the southern coast of the Persian Gulf have restructured their economies, which were based on the export of hydrocarbons, towards finance and tourism, but without forgetting their cultural roots. Tradition and modernity either stunningly contrast or beautifully fuse in the architectural projects by the most important architects and design studios. These projects are inspired by Islamic architecture, incorporating Islamic decorative motifs and age-old structural solutions for coping with the extreme Arabian climate. The architectural plans also reinterpret the urban layouts of Arabian cities. OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI, born in 1965, is an architect and researcher at the Building Environment Science & Technology Department of the Politecnico of Milan. As a researcher he focuses on project-related themes addressing the relationship between technology and the constructability of architecture. In addition to his research activity he participates in national and international architecture competitions. LAURA DAGLIO, who was born in 1970, is an architect. She teaches Architectural Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan, where she is a researcher in the Building Environment Science & Technology Department. She also contributes to various magazines.

KEY SELLING POINTS Cutting edge buildings and advanced, super-modern urban developments designed by the world’s leading architectural studios. Now in a new, compact, lower-priced edition.

Super Cats PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI TEXT BY FLAVIA CAPRA

KEY SELLING POINTS An original approach and spectacular pictures with great visual impact by Fabio Petroni, a highly skilled still life photographer. A book for cat lovers and their families. Cats photographed with humor and tenderness. Detailed fact sheets provide in-depth descriptions of the characteristics of the most important cat breeds as well as the care that they require.

How do you distinguish a British Shorthair from a Chartreux? And a Maine Coon from a Norwegian Forest? Unlike dog breeds, where size is a very important distinguishing feature, in domestic cats, with the exception of a few cases, size is not an instantly perceptible determining factor. The vast range of recognized colours and the difference in coat length, only complicate matters further. As you leaf through this book, you will learn to recognize the traits, the nuances that differentiate breeds, enabling you to recognize them at first glance. And to help you to do this, this book features striking original pictures by Fabio Petroni, a professional photographer specialized in still life photography and a great animal lover. Thanks to his professional skills as a photographer and his emotional proximity to the subjects portrayed, the true essence of cats emerges with effectiveness, accuracy and the right degree of sensitivity. Detailed fact sheets examine more than 40 of the most well-known breeds, giving an in-depth description of the breed standards recognized by the most important international cat associations, and they are complemented by splendid illustrations of the finest specimens on the international cat scene. FABIO PETRONI, after taking up photography, has worked with the top professionals of the sector. His professional career path led him to specialize in portraits and still life, fields in which he distinguished himself for his intuitive and meticulous style. He works with the main advertising agencies and has organized numerous campaigns for prestigious, internationally renowned companies and firms. For White Star, he published Horses. Master Portraits (2010), Mutt’s Life! (2011), Cocktails (2012) and Roses (2012). FLAVIA CAPRA is a qualified international cat show judge and she has transformed her passion into a profession: for years she contributed to the major Italian and foreign newspapers and magazines specialized in this field and eventually became Chief Editor of one of them. She currently works for the Associazione Nazionale Felina Italiana (ANFI, Italian National Cat Association), the only association recognized by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, where she is involved in the registration of cat breeds in the Italian genealogical registers and is in charge of the various operational phases.

NEW EDITION ART AND CIVILIZATION

Pompeii The History, Life and Art of the Buried City EDITED BY MARISA RANIERI PANETTA PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA The objective of this book is to bear witness to the importance of Pompeii in the field of archaeology, and to contribute to our body of knowledge about the complex civilization of the Romans. At the same time, it is also an invitation to visit a remarkable site where the past still seems extraordinarily alive. Using the latest scientific research, this multidisciplinary journey explores everything from painting styles to local history, botany and architecture. It investigates public life (politics, the baths, city theaters and the amphitheater), religious life (different types of public and private worship, temples and sanctuaries), the economy (commerce, financial activities and coinage, craftsmanship and agriculture), and the private arena (the world of women, erotic representations, lifestyles, wall inscriptions, funerary rites and the necropolises). A special section is devoted to the eruption of 79 AD, with a description based on the most recent discoveries, and another section takes a look at Oplontis, the most celebrated villa in the suburbs of Pompeii – and legendarily owned by Poppea Sabina, Nero’s second wife. An updated bibliography and a chronological outline conclude this journey back in time. MARISA RANIERI PANETTA is an editor and an archaeologist. She has published archival research and historical essays on Magna Graecia and Rome’s Imperial Age. ARALDO DE LUCA is one of the world’s leading art photographers, he has published numerous works in books, catalogs and magazines.

KEY SELLING POINTS A fascinating window onto the ancient world. The innumerable facets of a city captured in its very last moments of life and delivered to eternity by the terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Texts written by the leading experts in the excavations and research conducted in the Vesuvius area. The book investigates the pre-Islamic Iranian culture that developed between the 5th millennium BC and the 7th century AD in the immense territory extending from the Eastern Mediterranean to Central Asia. This chronological overview illustrates the key aspects of this civilization, from the prehistoric era to its development and the establishment of its empires. It examines the Achaemenids, who maintained the empire created by the Babylonians and Assyrians, the Seleucids, who revived the Achaemenid political and cultural cosmopolitanism destroyed by Alexander the Great, and the Parthians and Sassanids, who transformed the empire into the greatest crossroads of religion, civilization, language and trade between East and West. This historical journey is supplemented by detailed considerations of the arts, religions, traditions and customs of the ancient populations of the Iranian plateau who, despite the constant pressure they faced, managed to maintain a cultural unity that has endured into modern times. The book, which is based on the latest scientific research, is written for the general public in a narrative that combines a clear style with scientific accuracy. The historical tableau that emerges conveys the complexity of a world that fascinated all the cultures that came into contact with it, from those in the Far East to the European populations. At the same time, it offers significant insight that will help readers understand what is happening today in a cultural and geographical area that, unfortunately, the West continues to observe with hesitant admiration. ANNA VANZAN, a specialist in Iranian and Islamic studies, graduated from the University of Venice with a degree in Oriental Languages, earning her Ph.D. in Near Eastern Studies from New York University. Her research focuses mainly on the world of Persianized culture (Iran, Central Asia and Islamic India), paying special attention to the cultural history of these areas, where she has conducted research studies. She has published numerous essays in Italian and international magazines, and her most recent book, La storia velata, donne dell’Islam nell’immaginario italiano (Edizioni Lavoro, Rome 2006), was awarded the Feudo di Maida Prize in 2006. She has taught courses on Islamic civilization at Italian and foreign universities, and currently teaches at IULM University in Milan. Vanzan is executive editor of Afriche&Orienti magazine and contributes to Italian and foreign publications and radio programs.

KEY SELLING POINTS A fascinating, concise and comprehensive description of the rise, glory and fall of the Ancient Persian civilization. Now in a new, compact, lower-priced edition.

The volume is dedicated to the presentation of the Incas and is based on the information that has been handed down to us from ancient records, from mythology and from archaeology. Drawing on the latest researches and sources on the subject, the volume seeks to reveal to the general public the historical conditions, reasons and events that led to Incas’ success between the 13th and 15th centuries AD in imposing their domination upon the numerous populations native to the vast Andean territory. By presenting the historical records and archaeological evidences that relate the conquests and deeds of the sovereigns, from the legendary Manco Capac to Tupac Amaru, the last “Son of the Sun,” this book helps us to understand how the Incas developed from a small ethnic group to become an imperial power. In addition, special attention is given to indepth examinations that enable the Reader to grasp the complex structure of Incan society and its political, economic and religious organization. Following the winding path of the Urubamba River across the so-called Sacred Valley, the heart of the empire, this volume, enhanced by splendid images, visits the famous archaeological sites where, in a magnificent collaboration with the environment, the Incas were able to mold their own history through the construction of roads, hanging bridges, sanctuaries and cities. The Incas developed a culture that was the end result of a long process of transformation which involved all the thousand-year old Pre-Hispanic civilizations of the Peruvian area: they were however able, more than any predecessor or challenger, to build relationships and dominate far-flung and extremely varied territories. For this reason, they remain the unifying symbol of the modern Andean nations. CAROLINA ORSINI (1972) is curator of the extra-European Collections of the Civic Museums’ Applied Art Collection of the Castello Sforzesco, Milan. For nearly a decade she has undertaken field work in the Peruvian Andes, where she directs the works of the Antonio Raimondi Archaeology and Anthropology Mission, in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various Peruvian institutions. She is member of the national board of Peruvian archaeologists and is one of the Italian representatives for the Corpus Americanensium Italicum project of Brussels’ Academy of Sciences.
