Pasta! TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ACADEMIA BARILLA INTRODUCTIONS BY SCOTT CONANT AND MASSIMO BOTTURA The greatest quality of Italian cuisine, appreciated, sought after and imitated all over the world, lies in the variety of its products and preparations. Italy is divided into 20 regions that are extremely varied in landscape, climate and history, factors that have contributed to the very different traditions from north to south. This extreme diversity has a common denominator: wheat, flour, pasta. In promoting Italian gastronomic culture, Academia Barilla could not refrain from dedicating a book to the main national dish. This book aims to travel around all of Italy in a journey that covers 100 pasta recipes—fresh pasta, egg pasta, stuffed pasta, long spaghetti or short macaroni—from the Val d’Aosta to Sicily, in the search of old flavors and traditions that are always as good as new. ACADEMIA BARILLA is the first international center dedicated to the promotion and development of Italian Gastronomic Culture. In order to achieve this objective, on a daily basis, it appraises the wealth of Italian products and is committed to sustaining research into its own services, which are of a very high standard of quality. For this reason, Academia Barilla is availing itself of the skills of renowned chefs, gourmets and experts in regional culinary traditions that are recognized at a national and international level who can combine a great love for the Italian gastronomic tradition with a passion for innovation. MASSIMO BOTTURA, a key figure among a new generation of Italian chefs, draws a fine line between tradition and innovation at his two-Michelin-star restaurant Osteria Francescana located in the heart of Modena’s historic center. He describes his kitchen as “territorial cuisine seen from 10 kilometers away.” Osteria Francescana ranked 6th place at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2010 and is regarded by the international press as Italy’s best restaurant. SCOTT CONANT brings a deft touch and unwavering passion to creating food that is unexpected and soulful at Faustina as well as at Scarpetta, in New York. A graduate of The Culinary Institute of America, Conant was named one of America’s Best New Chefs by Food & Wine magazine in 2004. He has appeared on The Today Show, MARTHA and Bravo’s Top Chef. On the Food Network, Conant can also be seen as a guest judge on Chopped and as host of the 24 Hour Restaurant Battle. Conant has also published two cookbooks: New Italian Cooking and Bold Italian.

John Lennon In His Life EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS PREFACE BY YOKO ONO LENNON TEXT BY JOHN BLANEY A life-spanning photo-biography of the most revered Beatle, revealing his creative inspirations and capturing key moments in his life. John Lennon is a legend in the history of popular culture, the primary impetus and creative force behind the world’s most beloved and influential rock band, an iconoclastic personality who epitomized the explosiveness of his times, and a musical genius who wrote dozens of timeless songs before his life was tragically cut short in 1980. This photo-biography of the Fab Four’s enigmatic leader is dedicated to his artistic career, which began in Liverpool in 1962, and also to his life, which was marked by restless exploration – into art and music, consciousness and spirituality, politics and protest, love and peace. Featuring family photos and reproductions of documents that bear witness to momentous events and the origins of his “Imaginative” songs, this compilation, like no other, sheds light on his relationships with Paul, George, and Ringo; his attitudes toward mind-expanding drugs, social revolution, and the Vietnam War; the cataclysmic breakup of the Beatles; and the tenderness of his love for Yoko Ono and their only child Sean. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS was born in Vercelli, Italy. She studied Literature and earned her degree in Philosophy from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. 14 WHITE STAR PUBLISHERS 2010-2011

More Than Just a Kiss presents a collection of the greatest love movies, etched in the public’s mind for their romantic stories featuring famous actors, framed in epic surroundings, and delivering memorable words. Fifty memorable films, from the black and white era to today, are handsomely presented and analyzed in words and pictures. The book explains their enduring appeal, provides entertaining insight on the talent that made them, and points out little known but fascinating bits of their history. The sophisticated atmosphere of English Patient, elegiac style of Out of Africa, and pageantry of Shakespeare in Love. The book has plenty of star power provided by Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Tom Cruise, Meg Ryan, Richard Gere, Hugh Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart and others. And then there are the words that inspire the romance! From When Harry Met Sally…, the Meg Ryan character captures the sad plight of wounded hearts on the rebound with “The first date back is always the toughest, Harry.” And a non-sensual phrase from Casablanca somehow resonates forever with moviegoers as a romantic/tragic farewell in “Here’s looking at you kid.” Film journalist/analyst ROBERT MARICH, who authored the book Marketing to Moviegoers, has a quarter century experience writing about film and media. His article have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Hollywood Reporter and London-based Screen International. Marich recently finished editing and revising the latest edition of a college textbook about the music industry. Now based in the New York City area, he has covered film while living in Los Angeles, London and New York.

Masters of Rock Guitar FOREWORD BY JOE SATRIANI PREFACE BY ADRIAN BELEW TEXT BY ERNESTO ASSANTE Try to imagine a world with no guitars. Neither blues, nor flamenco or rock. The guitar has always been a protagonist of extraordinary pages of jazz history, it was the queen of folk and blues, and in its electric embodiment, it was the basic stone of rock’n’roll. We want to celebrate the electric guitar myth and legend, the extraordinary instrument that turned into a key to open the doors of sensation, creativity and of life itself. Lots of figures have contributed to this history: legendary musicians as Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Santana, Ben Harper, Jimi Hendrix. This volume is devoted to guitars and to the rockstars who have made use of them. A handsomely illustrated tribute to the instruments that have earned these guitarists their reputations as some of the greatest musicians of all time, this volume will strike a chord with music enthusiasts of all ages.

Starting from the first bodices and corsets which were true instruments of constriction hidden under layers of crinolines, we come to the glittering and theatrical display of lingerie on the catwalks of the most recent fashion shows of Victoria’s Secret. The century between these two extremes ushered in social changes that influenced our habits: we can see a reflection of these changes in the colorful advertising campaigns of the 20th century and enjoy comparing that retro style with today’s glossy advertising. And while some past slogans may raise a smile out of amusement or nostalgia, the pictures of film stars shown “in déshabillé,” on or off the set, are absolutely breathtaking. Hovering precariously between modesty and provocation, lingerie remains inextricably linked with feminine evolution and reflects, better than any other garment, changes in society. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS was born in Vercelli, Italy. She studied Literature and earned her degree in Philosophy from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. A travel and nature enthusiast, she has collaborated in the production of television documentaries and numerous photojournalism reports for the leading Italian specialist magazines, and has also written the texts for many photography books. In 1984, she and Marcello Bertinetti founded White Star Publishers, of which she became editorial director. ANNA FOLLI graduated in Humanities at the State University, Milan, specializing in contemporary Italian literature. Since 1996, she has worked as a professional journalist, and has been director of Anche Noi and editor-in-chief of Arredare. Since 1999 she has worked as a freelance writer, specializing in the fields of culture, current affairs and tourism, and she has also made documentaries all over the world. Anna Folli contributes articles to many of the leading Italian publishers.

Once Upon a Time in Africa 50 years of explorations and adventures TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANGELO AND ALFREDO CASTIGLIONI PREFACE BY GIOVANNA SALVIONI AND ALESSANDRO ROCCATI An extraordinary journey through time to discover the real roots of a continent and its people.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AFRICA 50 years of explorations and adventures Text and photographs by Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni 272 pages - 25.5 x 29.5 cm 507 color photographs hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0485 4

The last heirs of the great explorers of the 19th century, twins Angelo and Alfredo Castiglioni have collected, during the long decades of field research, precious documents, exceptional photos and new evidence of a continent that no longer exists. Entered with strength in the Third Millennium and in the global communication routes, Africa travels, today, towards modernity, wiping out, day after day, every heritage of its own composite cultural and ethnic identity. For this reason the precious archeological and anthropological work made by the Castiglioni brothers is particularly important today. This volume reconstructs, through the almost 50-year career of the two Italian explorers, the deep identity of the Black Continent, from the most ancient traditions to the surprising passing rituals. An important part of the volume is dedicated to the archeological expeditions in Africa, starting with the discovery in the Nubian Desert in Sudan of Berenice Panchrysos, the “entirely gold” city of pharaohs, quoted by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia whose traces were lost. A find that the French Academician, Jean Vercoutter considered “among the great discoveries of archeology.” ANGELO and ALFREDO CASTIGLIONI carried out, for nearly 50 years, research expeditions in the archeological, anthropological and ethnologic field, most of all making accurate cine-photographic documentations. They have published several books and made five films, distributed in the national and international circuits: Africa segreta (1969); Africa Ama (1971); Magia Nuda (1975) with Alberto Moravia’s commentary; Addio Ultimo Uomo (1979) with Vittorio Suttafava’s commentary; and Africa dolce e selvaggia (1982). GIOVANNA SALVIONI teaches Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at the Catholic University of Milan. Her training initially cultivated an interest in traditional African cultures. This was followed by an interest in the culture of the Roma ethnic group, in light of the general fight against all forms of poverty, discrimination, and racism. ALESSANDRO ROCCATI holds the Chair of Egyptology at the University of Turin. He has taught at several universities, both in Italy and abroad, and participated in numerous archeological missions in Egypt and Sudan. He has also organized international exhibits and conventions, and published many scientific works. From the start, his interests lay in the field of philology, language, literature, and culture of pharaonic Egypt.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 AROUND THE WORLD

Small Towns and Villages of the World TEXT BY PAOLO PACI PREFACE BY GIANNI BIONDILLO The most common small town model is comparable to that of a medieval village, with fortified walls and towers, a marketplace, an old town hall, and a cathedral. This is the layout of many town centers, like San Gimignano, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and Stein am Rhein. The Old European countryside is dotted with hamlets like these, whose populations usually run between 5000 and 15,000. They’ve become well-restored tourist attractions thanks to promotion from various national associations, often to the point of overcrowding in the high season. They’re perfect postcards, right out of a dream, where many urban residents eventually plan to retire. But this particular small town model is not the only one: there are many places in the world with various origins and urban plans, where the local communities still represent a vivacious economy and culture. There are fishing villages, mining towns, and farming communities, from China to New Zealand and from Canada to Thailand, where the new tourist economy is key to survival, though it’s hardly the only aspect of their development. Places of art, history, and nature staunchly guarded by their residents, these small communities are the last bastions against urban life and alienation. PAOLO PACI has been a professional journalist since 1991. His career began in 1983 with Weekend Viaggi, where he became the managing editor in 1992. He went on to participate in the design and launch of Viaggiesapori. VS Viaggiare Scoprire followed in 2006, and he became the editor-in-chief in 2009. Paci is an enthusiastic globetrotter, specializing in travel, gastronomy, and Alpine cultures. He has reported from all over the world and published a dozen books with various publishers. For Mondadori in 2005 he wrote 365 giorni sulle Alpi. His most recent works were published by Feltrinelli: Alpi, una grammatica d’alta quota; Cuochi, artisti, visionari; Evitare le buche più dure. In the 1990s he designed and coordinated the Guide Weekend series for Quadratum, and he is currently sub-editor of La Cucina Italiana. GIANNI BIONDILLO is a writer, a poet, an essayist and a scriptwriter for cinema and television. His first novel, Per cosa si uccide (2004) which met with a very favourable response from both the public and critics, was the first in a successful series of detective novels, set in today’s multi-racial Milan. The main characters are a police inspector and the city itself which plays a major role in the plot. The changing face of a city is a theme to which Biondillo dedicated two books, where he accompanies the reader through metropolitan suburbs, viewed as creative spaces that reflect the changes taking place in our society.

Close to God The holy places of the Christian religion TEXT BY PIETRO TARALLO The veneration of holy places is one of the oldest forms of expression of popular Christian piety. A sense of holiness tends to be embodied by the places as well as by some exceptional individuals and every culture has endeavored to honor these places, which are considered to be an expression and embodiment of the Divine. The firsts to be visited with assiduity were the sites in Palestine that have been pilgrimage destinations since the first centuries of the spreading of Christianity. The veneration of saints and martyrs led to the creation of sanctuaries all over the Western world, and since the 4th century these places were increasingly widespread: one such example is Santiago de Compostela in Spain. In the Middle Ages, many of these sites were considered to be surrounded by an aura of grace; visiting was an act of penance and obtained merit in the eyes of God. Today, these places are still significant pilgrimage destinations to millions of faithful in addition to being popular tourist destinations for non-believers because of their vast historical and artistic heritage. This book is dedicated to those, believers or otherwise, who wish to explore the wealth of art and culture found in these important places of faith. PIETRO TARALLO was born in Florence in 1941 and graduated in law and humanities. He has worked in advertising, as a teacher, and a journalist. He now works with leading Italian magazines and several publishers for whom he has written various books. He has written dozens of tourist guides on Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia for various publishers in addition to a series of guides to holy places. He has also written material and scripts for documentaries.

Archaeology from Above TEXT BY MARILIA ALBANESE, DAVIDE DOMENICI, GIORGIO FERRERO AND STEFANO MAGGI The first book to por t r a y t h e w o r l d ' s f o re m o s t a r chaeological sites exclusively from the air. The opportunity to see the beauty and grandeur of the world's foremost archaeological sites in their totality, as complete architectural units, is impossible on foot. From above, whether in a plane, helicopter or hot-air balloon, the entrenched fields seem to breathe new life, the cities recover the largeness of their dimensions, and the thermal baths and theaters seem ready to host their patrons again. This spectacular volume records the fabulous journey by a group of renowned specialist photographers, never before made, over the Pyramids of Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, over the sites where the great Mediterranean civiliza?tions arose, then hovering over the architectural jewels of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, beholding the complex struc?ture of the historic cities of the Far East, and tracing the sinuous stone snake of the Great Wall of China. MARILIA ALBANESE is Director of the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient and the Education Coordinator at the Civic School of Oriental Cultures and Languages in Milan. She is the author of several books including the recent Siddhartha - The Prince who became Buddha. DAVIDE DOMENICI is an archaeologist specializing in Mesoamerica. He has participated in excavations in Peru, Chile, and Mexico, and has headed up the Rio La Venta archaeological project in Chiapas. He is currently on the faculty of Paleography and Medieval Studies at the University of Bologna. STEFANO MAGGI is Professor of Archaeology in the Roman Provinces, Department of Sciences of Antiquity, at the University of Pavia. He specializes in the development of city-planning and architecture in the ancient world. His publications include a book on the layout of the forums in the cities of the Roman Cisalpine Republic, a monograph on the Roman amphitheaters of northern Italy, and various essays on the theaters and amphitheaters of the Roman world. GIORGIO FERRERO, after obtaining a degree in Egyptology with a study on Ancient Nubia, collaborates with Egyptology department of UniversitĂ degli Studi di Milano and with Civiche Raccolte Archeologiche e Numismatiche in Milan. For White Star Publishers he edited several books on archaeological subjects and published Egypt - History and Treasures of an Ancient Civilization.

Great Discoveries in Archaeology The past revealed TEXT BY MARK J. ROSE AND ETI BONN-MULLER What did English archaeologist Howard Carter say and how did he feel when opening the door to Tutankhamun’s tomb for the first time? Which of Homer’s footsteps did the German Heinrich Schliemann follow when making the dreams of every scholar come true by identifying the ruins of Troy? This book, which includes period photographs of the great dig sites and the objects found there, recalls the events surrounding the most important archaeological discoveries of all time, from the sands of Egypt and the forests of Central America to the ancient cities of the Mediterranean and the palaces of the Middle East. This is an enthralling work that accompanies the reader through stories of great archaeologists, and some regular people who, thanks to their intuition, tenacity or good fortune, have revealed some of the great wonders of antiquity to the world. MARK J. ROSE received his MA and PhD in classical archaeology from Indiana University and specialized in Aegean prehistory. He has studied faunal remains from numerous sites throughout the eastern Mediterranean, including Kommos, Crete; Franchthi Cave, Greece; and Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus. He has worked for the Archaeological Institute of America for more than two decades and published on a wide variety of topics, ranging from Predynastic Egypt to the ethics of archaeology and the media. He is currently researching the death of Seqenenre Taa II. He has been the online editorial director of Archaeology magazine and the AIA since 2000. ETI BONN-MULLER received her MA in eastern Mediterranean archaeology from K.U. Leuven, Belgium. Her research subjects on the Bronze Age have included the art of body painting and tattooing in the Aegean, which was the subject of her undergraduate thesis at Harvard University, and a comparison of ivories from Greece, Cyprus, and the Near East. She has participated in excavations at Palaikastro on Crete and Sagalassos in Turkey. After working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she joined the staff of Archaeology magazine, where she has written on the archaeology of China, Crete, Egypt, Germany, and Israel. She is currently the AIA online senior editor.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 HISTORY AND TREASURES OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS

The Phoenicians

Ancient Thailand

TEXT BY ENRICO ACQUARO AND PAOLA DE VITA

TEXT BY NICOLETTA CELLI

The volume goes over the most significant moments in the history of Phoenicians, from their origins in the East to their transfer to the West and the foundation of Carthage. The Phoenician colonization touched large regional areas, from North Africa to Sicily, from Sardinia to the Iberian Peninsula. The “imperial” adventure of Carthage followed the tracks of this colonization and clashed first with the Greeks living in Sicily and then with Rome. This volume, deriving its themes from the most recent results of historical and archeological research, is directed to a non-specialized public and its purpose is to provide an overall picture of the Phoenician civilization.

Dedicated to the art and culture of Thailand, this volume explores the ancient and various origins of this country’s modern identity. The Thai identity is the result of an extraordinary process of integration, clashes and selection of different cultural traditions, an expression of the various civilizations that inhabited the same area over time. From the contacts with the Indian world to the beginning of the first Buddhist Dvaravati civilization, to the provincial features of the Khmer civilization and the flourishing of the first reign, this book illuminates the fascinating route to modern Thailand through the most up-todate historical studies and reconstruction based on archeological and artistic testimonies.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 TREASURES OF ANCIENT EGYPT

Royal Mummies Immortality in Ancient Egypt INTRODUCTION BY ZAHI HAWASS TEXT BY FRANCIS JANOT An illustrated overview of the mummies of ancient Egypt. Since the major archaeological excavations of the 19th century, we have been fascinated by the mummies of ancient Egypt. Written in an authoritative yet accessible tone appropriate for YA and adult readers alike, this essential resource provides an information-packed overview of royal mummies. The text describes the ancient Egyptians’ belief in the Afterlife and how mummification ensured that their bodies were preserved for eternal life. Revealing the secrets of the embalming room, the meaning of the amulets found with mummies, and the ornate splendor of the mummies themselves, this volume explores all facets of a practice that lasted for more than 3,000 years, starting around 2,500 BC. Spotlighting such renowned examples of well-preserved mummies as Tutankhamen, Seti I and Rameses the Great, more than 200 color photographs depict the ornate sarcophagi, hieroglyphics, and amulets that add to the mystique of the mummy. ZAHI HAWASS is Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, and through the years he has made important archaeological discoveries. He is the author of numerous publications on ancient Egypt, including The Realm of the Pharaohs and The Treasures of the Pyramids (White Star Publishers). FRANCIS JANOT was born in Épinal (Vosges), France in 1959. Thanks to his specialization as both pathologist and Egyptologist, he has become known in archaeological research circles after over twenty years of excavations in Egyptian necropolises. His first book, Les instruments d´embaumement de l´Egypte ancienne (The Instruments Used for Embalming in Ancient Egypt), was published in 2000 by the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology of Cairo (IFAO). These studies on the instruments used and the operations carried out by the priest-embalmers, together with the pathological and archaeological observations made of the mummies in their tombs, make Janot one of the rare specialists of ancient Egyptian mortuary and embalming rituals. In 2003 he organized the first interdisciplinary study of an Old Kingdom (Fourth Dynasty) mummy that is kept in storage in the Museo Egizio, Turin. An Elder Scientific Member of the IFAO and winner of the prize awarded by the Société d'Encouragement au Progrès, at present Janot is Associate Professor at the University of Nancy and a member of the National Academy of Oral Surgery.

Egypt and the Holy Land Yesterday and Today Lithographs and diaries by David Roberts R.A. TEXT BY FABIO BOURBON PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTONIO ATTINI David Roberts (1796-1864) was born in Edinburgh into a very humble family but, thanks to his artistic gifts, he succeeded in becoming one of the most appreciated landscape painters of his time. After traveling in Europe, in 1838 he departed for Egypt and the following year he visited the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem and Palestine, the Lebanese coast and Baalbek. Using the drawings from his travels, the Belgian engraver made splendid lithographs which made him famous. This is a collection of the original plates, published for the first time between 1846 and 1848 accompanied by some excerpts from Roberts's travel diary. In addition, every illustration is accompanied by a photograph which shows the same view as it appears today. As well as offering a sample of Roberts's techniques and taste, this book is an excuse for a journey in time through the artistic treasures and the wonderful landscapes of Egypt and the Holy Land.

Siddhartha The Prince who became Buddha TEXT BY MARILIA ALBANESE PHOTOGRAPHS BY GIANNI AND TIZIANA BALDIZZONE A compelling reconstruction of the life of the man who became Buddha. Siddhartha Gautama, destined to become the Buddha, it was a historical character that was born in a century of great ferments and in a country where the spiritual search has been a priority for a long time. The reconstruction of his real profile is not easy, since the popular pity well soon took him, transfiguring the events of his human existence. The salient episodes of the life of the Buddha are introduced in the first part of the work, getting information from various literary sources, such as the Buddhist Canon or the Chinese pilgrims’ reports, with an iconographic support of works produced in different times and countries. In the second part it is human feeling of the Buddha that is tried to express, going the same way that one day saw him tireless pilgrim, with a specially commissioned search of modern images, that remembers the suffered run of Siddhartha, tragically stricken by a universal pain and determined to find an antidote, not only for the people of his time and his country, but forever and for everybody. MARILIA ALBANESE received her doctorate in Classical Archaeology and Egyptology from the University of Tübingen. Subsequently, she served for more than a decade as archaeologist and ceramologist for excavations at Thebes, Qasr Sagha, Lisht, and Dahshur. She joined The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985. She was elected Lila Acheson Wallace Curator in Charge of the Department of Egyptian Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1991. Since then, her responsibilities have included the organization of numerous exhibitions at the Metropolitan and the active participation in the Museum’s ongoing program of excavations in Egypt. Italian photographers GIANNI and TIZIANA BALDIZZONE met in Madagascar in 1977. Since then their common interest in ethnology has taken them to the most secluded areas of the world, especially in Asia and Africa. Authors of several books published by major international publishers, they are regular contributors to international magazines (such as GEO, Terre Sauvage, Le Pelerin, Airone, The Geographical).

The Art of the Pharaohs PREFACE BY ZAHI HAWASS, TEXT BY GIORGIO FERRERO PHOTOGRAPHS BY ARALDO DE LUCA

Large format: 35.5 x 43.5 cm The books of the series are also available in reduced format: 28.5 x 34.9 cm

Thanks to its large format, this magnificently illustrated book shows portraits and monuments that are considered to be artistic masterpieces of antiquity in a new light. It traces the profiles of several sovereigns, presenting an accurate and in-depth picture of the history and art of Ancient Egypt and its undisputed protagonists: the Pharaohs. “King of Upper and Lower Egypt,” “Lord of the Two Lands,” and “Son of Ra,” are some of the titles held by the sovereigns who ruled over one of the richest and most powerful states of antiquity for more than 3,000 years. The history of Ancient Egypt through the millennia is marked by a succession of sovereigns and dynasties. The Pharaoh played a central role in the ideology and in the concept of reality of Ancient Egyptians. This can be seen in the many monuments that feature and commemorate the feats of these sovereigns and the royal lists compiled by the ancient scribes. The Pharaoh, as the incarnation of the falcon god Horus and son of the sun god Ra, was the guarantor of cosmic order on Earth (Maat) and the intermediary between the gods and men. Chief priest, head of the army and head of political and administrative life, the Pharaoh was the prototype for the absolute monarch and, to some degree, his figure personified the state. Some Pharaohs left such traces of themselves that they became historical immortal figures. The names Khufu, Tutankhamun and Ramesses II remain well known after thousands of years due to their monuments and treasures. Of the other Pharaohs, the names and fragments of representations are the only traces we can use today to reconstruct the events of those times. GIORGIO FERRERO received his degree in Egyptology from the University of Milan. He has published the volume Egypt - History and Treasures of an ancient Civilization (White Star Publishers). ARALDO DE LUCA is considered one of the world’s greatest photographers of statuary and jewelry. His photographs have been published by White Star Publishers in the volumes: Egyptian Treasures, from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo; Tutankhamun; The Valley of the Kings; Ramesses II; The Treasures of the Pyramids; The art of Pompeii and The eternal army.

Last African Warriors TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY GIANNI GIANSANTI This large format photography book, with its striking visual impact, is a collection of work by the late Gianni Giansanti. The material comes from his travels in Africa, the cradle of humanity, where ancestral ties to nature still exist. It chronicles the lifestyle and social structure of Ethiopian tribes in the Omo Valley, looking at populations of warriors as well as peaceful peoples, highlighting the pride and strength of these individuals so accustomed to physical hardship and suffering. Enhanced by these extraordinary images, this volume also pays homage to the skill of a photographer who was always present for history in the making, and who never gave up on his search for the origins of man.

A photography exhibit will open in September 2010 at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan including pictures taken from this book. Large format: 34 x 41.5 cm The books of the series are also available in reduced format: 28.5 x 34.9 cm

GIANNI GIANSANTI began his career as a freelance photographer in Italy in 1978. He provided exclusive coverage for important events in Italian history and won many international prizes for his reporting. His photo essays often became bestsellers; among the most successful were John Paul II and Benedict XVI, published by White Star Publishers. In 2009, Giansanti also created an exhibit called “Twenty Italians Who Are Changing Italy. This photographic retrospective, presented in Florence at Palazzo Strozzi, was a great public and critical success.

Horses Master portraits PHOTOGRAPHS BY FABIO PETRONI FOREWORD BY OLIVIERO TOSCANI PREFACE BY MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM The history of horses is tightly interwoven with that of humanity, which owes its equine friends a great deal, from fieldwork to transport, from traveling and discovering to sports. This volume is a tribute to mankind’s tireless companion. Clever use of light, which comes from Petroni’s long experience as a still life and portrait photographer, has enabled him to create original images, with a style that is somewhat unusual for animal photographs—a style that is spectacularly enhanced thanks to the book’s large format. The thing that, above all, has enabled the photographer to communicate so directly the true essence of these magnificent quadrupeds is undoubtedly his emotional closeness to his models, the result of love and knowledge developed over so many years. Here, in front of the camera, are smart, timid, aggressive, proud, indolent, protective, curious, and gentle horses, in an explosion of emotions. Large format: 34 x 41.5 cm The books of the series are also available in reduced format: 28.5 x 34.9 cm

FABIO PETRONI lives and works in Milan. After studying photography, he turned professional in 1984, since then he has worked with some of the most famous names in international photography. He works with some of the top advertising agencies and has been involved in campaigns for well known national and international brands. His particular focus is on portraits and still life, areas in which he has demonstrated his intuitive and rigorous style. He is the official photographer of the IJRC (International Jumping Riders Club), and is responsible for the public image of major international horse-riding. OLIVIERO TOSCANI is known as the creative force behind the world's most famous newspapers and brands, and as a conceiver of successful corporate images and publicity campaigns. The recipient of prestigious international awards and recognition, he is Accademico d’Onore at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence. He lives in Tuscany, where he produces olive oil and wine and raises horses. MEREDITH MICHAELS-BEERBAUM is a German horse riding champion. She has been devoted to show jumping since she was a young girl, and has become one of the most successful athletes at both European and international levels. She has won various medals both in team and individual competitions. She was the first woman ever to rank number one in the international show jumping ranking of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI).

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 ART AND ARCHITETURE

Sustainable Living Masterpieces of Ecological Architecture TEXT BY MARCO MORO AND BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI When people say “ecological house,” they can be referring to any one of an infinite number of project plans destined to produce the least predictable outcomes you could possibly imagine. Ecological architecture measures itself with and adapts, above all, to the place – whether the context is urban, suburban, rural, or natural – with its environmental features, landscape, available resources, culture, and characteristic social and economic dynamics. If one were simply to call it “conscious architecture,” one could not go wrong. This volume’s objective is to illustrate some of the most prominent tendencies and lines of research that have emerged, and to introduce some of their advocates – pioneers, masters, or budding youth – through a broad review of projects dedicated to the most widespread way of living in the world: the individual or singlefamily home. But sustainability in architecture does not refer only to individual homes that are immersed, ideally, in verdure. Accordingly, one section of the book is dedicated to illustrating the best realizations of ecological buildings for a wide variety of uses. Ecological architecture has a new, polycentric geography, where ideas diffuse and develop in a multidirectional manner. Planners from every part of the world, of every age and background, have succeeded in distilling the poetics of living in harmony with the environment. Together they present a fascinating panorama of “architectural biodiversity.” MARCO MORO architect, was born in Padua in 1961 and lives and works in Milan. After collaborating with a number of different professional studios, including Angelo Mangiarotti’s studio in Milan, he became involved in communications and publishing. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of L’architettura naturale, Europe’s first magazine dedicated exclusively to sustainable architectural projects. He has also been a member of the directive committee of ANAB (National Association for Bioecological Architecture) as well as its communications manager. He heads the editorial section for Edizioni Ambiente, a Milanese publishing house specializing in environmental themes and sustainable development. BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI was born in Badia Polesine, and she now lives and works in Milan as a freelance architect. She deals primarily with planning and consultation in sectors relating to sustainable architecture. She is an expert in landscape-environmental conservation and collaborates actively with the ANAB in training activities, particularly in organizing study travels. She freelances for numerous enterprises in the sector.

New frontiers in Architecture The United Arab Emirates between vision and reality TEXT BY OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI AND LAURA DAGLIO A rampant building boom is transforming the desert lands of the Persian Gulf ’s fabulously wealthy oil-producing countries: they are becoming large metropolitan areas at an exponentially rapid pace. The rush for luxury and the race for the biggest, best and most dazzling feed a burgeoning real-estate market where promoters and large commercial companies create visionary and futuristic architecture. In addition to new luxury towers of record height there are skyscrapers with spectacular rotating sections, almost dream-like qualities of the new forms, and the shaping of enormous artificial islands that change entire coastlines – all part of a general challenge to master, even change, climate and environment. The planners involved belong to some of the largest international studios, firms that have opened new headquarters in the Gulf – in fact, the entire architectural star system is called upon to give a cultural imprint and to express a new concept of the city and its buildings. OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI born in 1965, is an architect and researcher at the Building Environment Science & Technology Department of the Politecnico di Milano. As a researcher he focuses on project-related themes addressing the relationship between technology and the constructability of architecture. In addition to his research activity he participates in national and international architecture competitions. LAURA DAGLIO who was born in 1970, is an architect. She teaches architectural technology at the Faculty of Architecture and Society at the Politecnico di Milano, where she is a researcher in the Building Environment Science & Technology Department.

Lighthouses TEXT BY ANNAMARIA MARIOTTI This book is dedicated to the most attractive lighthouses in the world, the lighthouses of our dreams, history, legends, films and novels: the small, slender lighthouses isolated amongst the rollers on a stormy coast, reachable only by boat, visited only by seagulls and inhabited by an old retired sailor. Hot Air Balloons History, Evolution and Great Adventures INTRODUCTION BY BERTRAND PICCARD TEXT BY JEAN BECKER PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERTO MAGNI AND DANIELA COMI A color f u l i l l u s t r a t e d h i s t o r y o f h o t a i r b a l l o o n s w i t h i m a g e s o f dazzling, imaginativ e a i r s h i p s a n d s t o r ies of er oic flights. Featuring vintage prints and spectacular photos, this colorful illustrated history of hot air ballooning showcases its heroic achievements, the imaginative, often futuristic shapes of the airships, the innovative navigators and engineers, and the popular modern-day events that speckle the heavens with hundreds of balloons. From the dangerous fivehour voyage in the Montgolfier brothers' balloon in 1783 to the epic exploits in today’s “impossible” airships by Bertrand Piccard and the late Steve Fossett, this dizzyingly entertaining volume offers passage on a breathtaking journey through one of the most picaresque and physically heroic fields of aviation history. Featuring images of the passing countryside from high aloft and direct testimony from the brave figures who decided to "call upon the clouds" in person, the book culminates with the pageantry of popular ballooning events in places as far flung as France and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where each year almost 800 balloons color the sky, giving their pilots their moments of glory and recalling the birth of aerostatics in the eigtheenth century. BERTRAND PICCARD succeeded with Brian Jones the first non-stop round-the-world balloon flight, achieving the longest flight in terms of both duration and distance in the history of aviation. They were decorated with the Olympic Order and the gold medal of the French Ministry of Youth and Sport and received among others the highest distinctions of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the National Geographic Society, the Explorer’s Club. ROBERTO MAGNI was born in the province of Bologna (Italy) and started taking photographs in 1988 and for the most part did travel reportages. DANIELA COMI met Roberto Magni during a reportage in Holland. They shared a common passion for photography and travelling. JEAN BECKER is a journalist who has reported on France's involvement in recent international conflicts. A renowned hot air balloon navigator, he has recorded nearly 2,500 hours of flight and participated in the expedition over the Norwegian island of Spitzbergen and the winter crossing of Norwegian Lapland.

PORTRAITS CATALOGUE 2010-2011

Gianni Giansanti, who has covered the Vatican for 20 years, photographed John Paul II and Benedict XVI during many public and private occasions. He has created fascinating reports that use the language of photography – an extraordinary instrument that has grasped the expressions and feelings of the two popes – to paint uncommon portraits of these two important figures. The books examine memoirs, new reports, and pictures of their public and private life to show the official face as well as the private and human side of these great pontiffs. What clearly emerges is the multifaceted figure of John Paul II, a charismatic Christian leader who powerfully shaped the last decades of the 20th century, and a truthful portrait of Benedict XVI, ‘the German pope’, with, above all, his extraordinary love of life. SURF! In the water with wave hunters Text by Guillaume Dufau 208 pages - 28.5 x 33.5 cm Hardcover with jacket

Surf! In the water with wave hunters TEXT BY GUILLAUME DUFAU Surfing: sport of Hawaiian kings and king of aquatic sports. Practiced since time immemorial in the South Pacific, in the 20th century it has conquered beaches all around the world and given rise to many sports born from the imagination and passion of those practicing it. From windsurfing to kite surfing, passing through bodyboarding or tow-in surfing -- which allows surfers, using jet skis, to conquer vertiginous aquatic peaks, impossible to face in the past with just the force of the arms -- numerous technical innovations have allowed the tribe of wavehunters to increase their numbers. Creative technology goes hand-in-hand with profound respect for the traditional “cavalcades” inherited from the past, such as Body Surfing, a movement of the body upon the wave inspired by dolphins, or Standup Paddling, done with a huge board maneuvered on foot with the aid of a paddle. Riders is a magnificent photographic journey through the history of gliding on waves, enriched by testimonies from top champions in each of the disciplines. Originally from Landes, the department in the southwest of France famous all around the world for the quality of its waves, GUILLAUME DUFAU discovered surfing on the beach break waves of Hossegor in the 1980s. In 1997, after his studies in journalism, he became part of the Surf Saga magazine team, becoming editorin-chief a year later at the age of 24. After that, for 10 years he was head of the editing department for the monthly Surf Session, at Biarritz, for whom he produced numerous documentaries from the four corners of the world, particularly Tahiti. A great reporter, he regularly publishes articles on the so-called sport de glisse, travel, and environment, for the French and international press.

THE SECRETS OF THE SEA CATALOGUE 2010-2011

The Perfect Storm TEXT BY ORNELLA D’ALESSIO This is a volume rich in powerful images, dedicated to the most overwhelming and intoxicating aspects of the sea, the incredible violence unleashed during storms, and the extraordinary force of waves with their disturbing beauty. The sea is life, pure energy expressed in ways that evoke the most diverse states of mind. The sea is movement. Nothing embodies certain explosive sensations, feelings or uncontrollable urges better than waves breaking on rocks during a storm, exploding in white clouds of salt water, or the violence of a storm in the open sea, when nature’s irrepressible fury is unleashed in all of its unpredictability. In these pages, the sea is also revealed as the symbol of nature as a friend, as a positive force running through the white swirls of waves. It is ridden with mastery and audacity by adventurous surfers, protagonists of an extraordinary gallery of images. They venture patiently and fearlessly into the midst of frightfully powerful waves up to 17-feet (5-m) high, in order to ride their clear blue surface with an unmatched thrill. And there they go, leaping onto the crest of the wave at precisely the right moment, to finally dominate the wave and, in doing so, to exercise the same control over themselves, their emotions, and their own lives. Just as captivating are the images of other men battling against the force of the sea; famous sportsmen or common workmen caught in the vortex of a storm, with all their senses alert and the tension that comes from feeling all their remaining energy put to the test. Giant waves rise high and menacing, then crash down on the seamen with an infernal roar. The waves strike the ship with increasing speed and intensity, while the air resonates with the strident sounds of the storm. This book evokes the voice of the storm through a collection of powerful photographs that arouse strong emotions, both in those who know the sea well through direct experience, and in those who dream of it, like a mirror of their own soul and the expression of multiple states of their own conscience. ORNELLA D’ALESSIO, a great traveler by vocation, D’Alessio is a freelance journalist and author of guides and books. She collaborates with leading weekly and monthly travel magazines. Since adolescence, her curiosity and nomad spirit have led her to discover distant places and their cultures. But her greatest love is the sea, which has motivated her to cross oceans and face storms—only sometimes perfect. She’s often accompanied by her children, Marianna and Pietro. Her passion for the Mediterranean led her to return to Liguria, her only true land, where she has chosen to live.

A view from abobe

TEXT BY PETER SKINNER PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM WARK

TEXT BY CHRISTOPHER MORIARTY PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTONIO ATTINI

As a former naval aviator and air show pilot, Jim Wark is extremely adept at dramatic aerial manoeuvres. His experience in the air has served him well in his career as an aerial photographer, enabling him to capture remarkable shots few people could attain, and providing him with a unique perspective that translates perfectly to his photographs. In this handsome oversized volume, Wark takes to the air to give readers an aerial tour of the 50 states. Organized by region, America-A view from above whisks us over familiar sights that become extraordinary when viewed through the lens of Jim Wark, and rarely seen wonders that are all the more incredible for the aerial vantage point from which we experience them. We soar over the majestic Grand Canyon, the craggy peaks of the Rocky Mountains, and the magnificent Great Lakes, marvelling at colors, patterns, and textures evoked in Wark’s images. The lush Hawaiian Islands tempt us from above, while the glaciers of Alaska loom large, even when viewed from this lofty viewpoint. The patchwork of farmland in the Midwest, the necklace of lights created by New York City’s bridges at night, and the wonders of national parks like Yellowstone all come to life when admired from above, in this spectacular volume.

A souvenir to be cherished by anyone who has been to Ireland, and an inspiration for anyone who hopes to go there, this large format volume takes readers on a voyage of discovery of the island’s rich natural heritage. Glorious full-color aerial photographs accompanied by informative captions transport us to this land of Celtic and Viking memories. Antonio Attini, one of the masters of this art form, takes us on a guided tour that depicts the vivid colors and incomparably lush landscapes of the Emerald Isle. We are transported over gentle valleys and the verdant hills that give the island its affectionate nickname. Panoramic pictures from the air celebrate the magnificent desolation of moors dotted with heather and gorse and the restless beauty of the craggy coastline, tormented unceasingly by the sea. Designed to recreate an extraordinary plane trip over Ireland, this volume reveals the unique patterns and colors that only become apparent when viewed from above, and uncovers hidden corners of the country that we could not experience without the benefit of Antonio Attini as our skillful guide.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 THE WORLD FROM THE AIR

High above Venice PHOTOGRAPHS BY MARCELLO BERTINETTI TEXT BY SIMONA STOPPA Packed with colorful photographs, this book takes readers on tour above one of Italy’s most popular city. Featuring hundreds of birds-eye photographs, this volume expands our perceptions of a city that already looms large in our mind’s eye. Taking readers on an aerial adventure above this ever-fascinating city and its surrounding, the images in High Above Venice depict a city that is as breathtakingly beautiful in reality as it is in our imagination. A wide variety of panoramas depict the sights that are distinctly Venetian: the emerald-green Lagoon with its picturesque islands of Burano, Torcello, and Murano, the brightly-colored homes of Burano, the network of canals branching out from the S shaped Grand Canal, the venerable palaces, centuries-old homes, and world-famous monuments which are all the more compelling when viewed from above. For anyone who has experienced the magic of Venice, this volume is a souvenir to be cherished. And for anyone who hopes to travel to this city, it will serve as inspiration. Acclaimed photographer MARCELLO BERTINETTI has been published in many major magazines and periodicals. In addition, his work has been published in numerous books and used in major advertising campaigns. In 1984, he founded White Star Publishers and he currently works as publisher of the company as well as continuing to work as a professional photographer. SIMONA STOPPA is a travel journalist who specializes in the environment, nature, marine studies and anthropology. She is a regular contributor to Italian television as a writer and director. She has created new television programs and videos for companies working in a broad range of activities, and has contributed content for them. She writes illustrated books and guidebooks for the Italian Touring Club and also for White Star Publishers. Stoppa also contributes to a number of travel magazines, such as Meridiani, Tuttoturismo and In Viaggio; she has also created videos for the Focus.it and GenteViaggi.it websites. In addition to teaching at Brescia’s Catholic University, she provides consulting services to corporations, using audiovisual instruments for empowerment, teambuilding and team-working.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 WONDERS OF ITALY

Ancient Italy A journey through art and history EDITED BY FURIO DURANDO The enormity and variety of Italy’s archeological heritage is well known throughout the world. Just consider what an inspiration that patrimony has been for a myriad of artists, writers, and scholars, from the Renaissance to the Age of the Grand Tour (a cultural and educational journey across Europe, usually undertaken by young British aristocrats of the 18th century), and from the “heroic” times of the 1800s to those of modern archeology. We have decided to dedicate a work of prestige to this Italy of the past and its valuable artifacts, with high quality photos and texts that are accurate and up to date, but that also offer a pleasurable and accessible read to a vast audience. This book will guide your eyes and your spirit on a journey along the paths of ancient civilizations in Italy. A fascinating itinerary will lead you to discover remote origins, with beautiful images of dozens of archeological sites and museums, together with concise, and scientifically current text—in all, a valuable opportunity to discover, or rediscover, its past heritage. FURIO DURANDO has a degree in archeology and has done onsite excavation, surveys, and documentation, as well as inventory of artifacts. He has also worked on various archeo-topographical projects. He has curated both temporary and permanent museum exhibits, participated in the creation of didactic science material for CD-ROM, and taught Museumology and Museumography at the graduate level. He has published a monograph and numerous journal articles concerned with various aspects of classical archeology, both in Italy and in broader regions.

CATALOGUE 2010-2011 COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD

South Africa TEXT BY ALBERTO SALZA Savannahs and deserts, lowlands and mountains, jagged coastlines and exquisite beaches — South Africa is an incredible succession of unique natural settings, an inimitable reiteration of the entire Dark Continent. Here live ethnic groups of radically different races and cultures. Their coexistence is the modern life of South Africa, as well as the fruit of its history: endless pastures and the hunting grounds of the most ancient inhabitants, seaports for the earliest white settlers, farmland that was transformed into gold and diamond mines. This is modern Africa. Anthropologist ALBERTO SALZA works with several universities, and with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is also a field researcher in Africa, Asia and Latin America in the field of human-environmental relations. He has also written many reports and articles for popular scientific magazines and important television networks.

ITALIAN REGIONS CATALOGUE 2010-2011

The wonders of Portofino and the Italian Riviera TEXT BY GIULIANA MANGANELLI Spectacular photographs and an evocative text combine in this book dedicated to the wonders of Liguria, a land of natural contrasts, squeezed as it is between the mountains on one side and the sea on the other, which at times hurls itself onto its shores with furious power and at others soothes them with its gentle surf playing among the boats and nets of the local fishermen. The different chapters add up to produce a full and up-to-date picture of this region. GIULIANA MANGANELLI was born in Genoa in 1949. After graduating in English Language and Literature, she taught at the University of Genoa for several years. Between 1978 and 1992 she worked as a producer and presenter for the Ligurian branch of RAI1, and hosted several different cultural and entertainment shows, including Week End, a program of artistic itineraries exploring the region. For the past several years she has been a regular contributor to the culture and entertainment section of the Genoa newspaper Il Secolo XIX.
