Masterpieces of Italian Design TEXT BY DESIGN.DOC A gleaming display-case of Italy’s most magnificent designs, featuring classic products for the home from 1932 to the present day Since the 1930s, the “Made in Italy” label has been synonymous with design excellence, the very definition of style, beauty, and sensuality. This attractive volume, a design object in itself, is a veritable showroom of Italy’s most iconic houseware designs: furniture, appliances, and more. Over 200 photographs of classic objects by the nation’s top designers are featured with texts that describe the context of their origins and influences. The whimsical genius and often futuristic invention of Italian design can be appreciated in these fancifully produced images of products manufactured by Olivetti, Fiat, Alessi, Cassina, Swatch, Memphis, and other globally renowned firms. The arc of creativity can be traced from the welding of craftsmanship to mass production, the evolution from functionality to symbolism and political utopianism, and, finally, the breakthroughs of post-modernism and contemporary realism. Featured is the work of Italian masters as well as foreign designers who find fertile ground for expression in Italy.

Pop Art TEXT BY MARTINA ANGELOTTI, WITH VALENTINA CIUFFI AND VERONICA LENZA A pop-tastically compact compendium of art’s most fabulous and irreverent movement For students of modern art, advertising, and design, this compact overview of Pop Art gathers nearly 200 full-color reproductions of its masterpieces with newly commissioned texts that trace the history of the iconoclastic movement from its origins in the U.K. through its explosion in the U.S. and subsequent European incarnations. Readers are shown how “Popular Art” brought about a jarring break from earlier artistic traditions, as the new power of technical reproduction stripped away their qualities of unrepeatable uniqueness. Featuring a special introductory chapter on Andy Warhol, the genre’s most infamous figure, and brief biographies of each artist represented, the book shows how Pop Art objectified massproduced imagery from the new media of advertising, Hollywood movies, television, comic strips, and popular literature, deftly and often hilariously breaching the gulf between high and low art.

MARTINA ANGELOTTI is an independent editor and a freelance contributor to several contemporary art magazines and Websites. Additionally, she directs the master’s program for Design of Cultural Events, Performing Arts and New Creativity at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan. VALENTINA CIUFFI contributes articles about art, architecture, design, and the performing arts to the Italian art journals Abitare, D/La Repubblica delle Donne, Luxury24/Sole24ore, Rodeo, and Arte e Critica. She has a degree in communication sciences (art semiotics) from the University of Bologna. VERONICA LENZA organizes cultural events and contemporary art projects. She holds a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts at Brera, Italy, residing in Milan and New York.

Marco Polo A Photographer’s Journey TEXT AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICHAEL YAMASHITA, HISTORICAL INTRODUCTIONS BY GIANNI GUADALUPI Marco Polo’s legendary journey retraced, documented by spectacular photographs and tales of new adventures Armchair travelers and history and photography buffs will thrill to this trimmer, more affordable edition of the 2002 bestseller. National Geographic shooter Michael Yamashita traces the footsteps of Marco Polo’s fabled journey to China, from Venice across the Middle East and Central Asia, over the Silk Road and “the roof of the world,” then returning by way of coastal Sumatra, Sri Lanka, and India. Undertaken to investigate academic doubts about the authenticity of the Venetian’s first-person accounts of the Orient, this beautifully illustrated book documents the photographer’s forensic verifications of Marco’s itinerary as well vivid impressions of his own adventures. Quotations from Marco’s The Description of the World contextualize Yamashita’s accounts of formidable challenges, including vehicle and equipment failure, adverse weather, armed conflict, and religious bans on photography. The 500 photos are supplemented by a historical introduction and a precious selection of Marco-era maps and artwork. The end result is a treasure trove of history, geography, and culture, redolent of human toil, sun and spice, opium and axle grease, breathtaking vistas and citadels of exotic civilization.

MICHAEL YAMASHITA is an award-winning photographer for National Geographic, which published his unprecedented three-part series on Marco Polo’s travels and produced a related documentary for its television channel. Among his many books is Zheng He (White Star Publishers). When he’s not traversing the globe, shooting, lecturing, or exhibiting his work, he resides in Chester, New Jersey, where he’s on call as a volunteer firefighter. GIANNI GUADALUPI edited China Revealed, The Discovery of the Nile, The Holy Bible, and Sahara for White Star Publishers.

Wonders of America TEXT BY ELIZABETH HEATH A spectacular celebration of the American landscape, from majestic wilderness to gleaming cities and quaint rustic villages Perhaps the greatest source of reverence for America’s original inhabitants, of patriotic pride since the nation’s birth, and the strongest attraction for immigrants in search of a better life, is its vast, majestic, and varied landscape. The photographs in this volume provide keen insight into the character of the USA, which is on display in its cities and small towns, its mountains and forests, its coastlines and beaches, its plains and deserts, and its lakes and rivers. In these pages we discover the America that has inspired centuries of exploration and conservation movements and held a place of fascination with people everywhere. A poetic pictorial tribute to the American land mass “from sea to shining sea,” the book portrays the unique sites and natural beauty of every region in the country, from the frigid peaks of Alaska to the orange groves of Florida, from the lava fields of Hawaii to the craggy cliffs of Maine. Breathtaking formations both natural and manmade are featured in images of national treasures, including monuments, prominent structures, and cozy small-town main streets, as well as native wildlife and vast tracts of geological sculptures beyond the scope of humankind to shape.

ELIZABETH HEATH is an American writer and editor now residing in central Italy, where she’s completing her Ph.D. in anthropology and archaeology with a focus on the presentation of public archaeology in Italy. Her articles on art, entertainment, interior design, lifestyle, and travel have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers.

Gentle Giants An emotional face to face with dolphins and whales TEXT BY ISABELLE GROC An intriguing, exploration of our dearest underwater chums, the cetaceans This fascinating portrait of cetaceans, our sea-borne fellow mammals, combines superb nature writing with spectacular photography to create an intimate resource on dolphins, porpoises, and whales: the marine creatures most dear to us, with which we share a poignant mutual curiosity. The book begins with a survey of the order’s 80 species and an exploration of their mysterious origins, which might have been as four-legged terrestrials. Their unique eating habits and sophisticated migration patterns are traced, touching upon threats to food supply, the dangers of travel, and tragic, inexplicable strandings and beachings. The astonishing qualities cetaceans share with humans is shown in striking presentations on mating, breeding, and parenting, social organization, and vocalized communication. Remarkably, we share the capacity for culture itself: dolphins and whales teach each other – through their clicks, squeals, and songs – practical knowledge for survival, including hunting techniques and defense tactics against predators. Finally, cetaceans’ awesome power to nurture and heal is discussed in the context of their complex and, ironically, often painful relationship with humans, from whaling to whale watching, from “collateral” porpoise netting to swim-with-dolphin programmes.

ISABELLE GROC, a freelance writer and photographer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has contributed to various publications including Canadian Wildlife, Canadian Geographic, High Country News, and E/The Environmental Magazine. She is the winner of the 2005 CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) David Suzuki Nature in Focus Environmental Photography Competition.

Surf! In the water with wave hunters TEXT BY GUILLAUME DUFAU Extreme sport photography at its most exhilarating: the astonishing feats of the world’s master surfers While it features the “knights of the waves,” the world’s elite surfers, and the stunning locales where they practice their craft, this is not your standard sport photography collection. In these breathtakingly dramatic images by leading figures in outdoor and extreme sport photography, it is the immense power and beauty of the ocean that is the true “star.” These brilliant and briny shots from seemingly impossible angles capture mounting ocean swells and cresting, curling, and crashing waves ridden by nimble, intrepid athletes, whose precarious dance embodies our collective love for the acrobatic challenge and thrill of the sport. The entertaining text provdes a breezy review of surfing history, from its Polynesian origins to the death-defying big wave riding of today, with vignettes of pioneers and contemporary luminaries, including big wave emeritus Jason Polakow, teenaged phenom Kai Lenny, windsurfer Robby Haish, bodyboarder Mike Steward, and the veritable Poseidon himself, Laird Hamilton. Readers will discover how each offshoot of the water surface sport emerged, how its innovators adopted new techniques and equipment to suit the unique aerodynamics of windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand up paddle, bodyboarding, and the most daring of all: tow-in surfing, which involves high-stakes teamwork and strategy to tow the surfer by jet ski and drop him – at just the right moment – before a monster wave towering as high as 100 feet!

GUILLAUME DUFAU, who discovered surfing on the fabled shores of Hossegor in southwest France, has served as editor-in-chief at Surf Saga and at Surf Session, where he produced numerous documentaries. His articles on the so-called sport de glisse, travel, and the environment appear regularly in the French and international press.

Classic Sailboats TEXT BY JILL BOBROW A century of classic yachts unfurled in vintage photographs and a sail-snapping text that reveals the secrets of their beauty and yar performance A well-built sailing vessel is a thing to behold, regarded for centuries – by both sailor and landlubber alike – as a sight so magnificent as to rival the light of the moon or the form of a beautiful woman. This book is a celebration of that beauty, beginning with a definition of exactly what a classic yacht is and explanations of the roles played by factors such as design, materials, vintage, size, and builder. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific boat, providing an indepth discussion of her provenance, construction, and sailing characteristics, with contextual framework given by comparisons to similar ships. Readers will discover how different countries – and different builders within them – developed their own unique solutions to common challenges to seaworthiness, speed, and maneuverability. Illustrated with photographs of the most gorgeous news-making vessels of the past century, the book features a lively text that conveys a real insider’s knowledge of the fleet, with information about each yacht’s construction, changes in ownership, America’s Cup performances, and the rivalries and colorful personalities involved.

JILL BOBROW is editor-at-large at Yachts International, former editor-in-chief of ShowBoats International, a founding editor of Boat International USA, and editor of the Megayachts USA book series. She spent her post-university years crewing, cooking on charter boats, and living in the West Indies. She has co-authored more than a dozen high-end yachting-related titles, including Classic Yacht Interiors; The World’s Most Extraordinary Yachts; Harbors of Enchantment, a Yachtsmen’s Anthology; Sprit of Tradition, Old and New Classic Yachts; St Vincent and the Grenadines; Antigua and Barbuda; and Outrageous Yachts. Over the course of her career, she has cruised on numerous famous yachts in countless locales the world over. She lives in Warren, Vermont, with her daughter.

Sustainable Living Masterpieces of Ecological Architecture TEXT BY MARCO MORO AND BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI Green architecture’s finest achievements – the world’s best innovations in nature-friendly design A fascinating panorama of “architectural biodiversity,” this forward-looking volume documents the innovative creations of pioneers and masters across the globe who distilled the poetics of building in harmony with the earth. The best realizations of ecological residences and other building types are exhibited in this broad review of projects in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Ecological architecture might be called “conscious architecture,” for, above all, it is a meticulous and deliberate response to place: its landscape, environmental features, resources, culture, and characteristic economic and social dynamics. On the one hand, that entails reviving indigenous building traditions and utilizing materials that can also be recycled. On the other hand, it is necessary to devise artificial materials and technology to create new architectural elements and systems for efficient climate regulation. This is a beautiful, exotic collection of “architecture’s greenest gems,” including domiciles that have “gone native” as well as gleaming, futuristic structures of glass and steel, all with ingenious climate control systems and low energy emissions.

MARCO MORO studied architecture at the prestigious Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and the Politecnico di Milano. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of L’architettura naturale, Europe’s first journal devoted to sustainable architecture. He is member of the directive committee at the Associazione Nazionale Architettura Bioecologica (ANAB) and editorial head at Edizioni Ambiente, which specializes in environmental themes and sustainable development. BEATRICE SPIRANDELLI is a Milan-based freelance architect, working primarily in sectors related to sustainable architecture. She is an expert in landscaping and environmental conservation and organizes study tours for the ANAB.

World Trade Center PREFACE BY MIKE WALLACE TEXT BY PETER SKINNER AND GIORGIO TARTARO How the World Trade Center came to be, what it came to represent, how it fell, and how it will rise again, ever greater

WORLD TRADE CENTER Preface by Mike Wallace Text by Peter Skinner and Giorgio Tartaro Format: 20 x 37,5 cm 192 pages 175 color photographs Hardcover with jacket 978 88 544 0585 1

GPB 19,99

In the shape of one of the fallen Twin Towers, this stirring tribute to the World Trade Center celebrates its origins and short but spectacular life as a fulcrum for business and a beacon of optimism to people everywhere. It then, poignantly, documents the tragedy of the Center’s era-shattering demolition and, concludes with a sparkling preview of the future of the site, from which the phoenix will soon rise from the ashes of Ground Zero to stand as a symbol of peace and resilience. The book begins by setting the stage for the development of the Lower Manhattan site in the 1960s. Thought to be an economic gamble, the Center quickly became the bustling heart of a business, commercial and tourist center, an exciting city-within-a-city unmatched in world history. Minoru Yamasaki’s architectural plans as well as period black-and-white photographs depict the project’s exegesis and evolution. The narrative moves on to show that while the Center emerged as a symbol of power and purpose, its preeminence inspired ominous fantasies about urban destruction in popular culture, most dramatically in movie depictions of predators wreaking havoc on New York. Through maps, sketches, and photographs of the leading figures involved in the site’s rebirth, readers will be drawn into the beating heart of New York, a city that never gives up and is successfully reinventing itself in a yet more vibrant and thriving form.

PETER SKINNER is the author of the New York: A City of Neighborhoods. For White Star Publishers, he wrote Ireland, the Emerald Island and High Above New York. MIKE WALLACE is co-author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898 and a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (City University of New York). GIORGIO TARTARO teaches at Milan Polytechnic and writes for a number of design publications.
