ANIMALPA R A D E A new series of illustrated books dedicated to the animal world offers an opportunity to observe the amusing expressions and behavior of various species close up, with original pictures and special perspectives. This is a collection of books in a handy format to be looked at again and again. Interpret the animals’ behavior and their habits with the help of brief captions and quotations. The first three editions in the series are dedicated to cows, pigs, and one of the most common and beloved canine companions: the Labrador. Cows and pigs are presented in a playful and enchanting way, capturing unusual or curious aspects of their characters and their natural behavior. Pigs are simple, sociable, intelligent creatures and, contrary to what one might think, rather clean. When they interact with each other or when they are in the company of other animals, their posture and behavior are amusing, to say the least, but they also know how to be sweet and adorable when they rest stretched out on the ground. Cows, on the other hand, are docile, peaceful and gentle by themselves or with their companions, and they are much more than a source of milk, as the pages of the book clearly demonstrate. And for whoever owns a Labrador or would like to have one, the book L for Labrador will justify your adoration of this extraordinary companion.

The opportunity to see the beauty and grandeur of the world's foremost archaeological sites in their totality, as complete architectural units, is impossible on foot. From above, whether in a plane, helicopter or hot-air balloon, the entrenched fields seem to breathe new life, the cities recover the largeness of their dimensions, and the thermal baths and theaters seem ready to host their patrons again. This spectacular volume records the fabulous journey by a group of renowned specialist photographers, never before made, over the Pyramids of Egypt and elsewhere in the Middle East, over the sites where the great Mediterranean civiliza?tions arose, then hovering over the architectural jewels of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, beholding the complex struc?ture of the historic cities of the Far East, and tracing the sinuous stone snake of the Great Wall of China. MARILIA ALBANESE is Director of the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient and the Education Coordinator at the Civic School of Oriental Cultures and Languages in Milan. She is the author of several books including the recent Siddhartha - The Prince who became Buddha. DAVIDE DOMENICI is an archaeologist specializing in Mesoamerica. He has participated in excavations in Peru, Chile, and Mexico, and has headed up the Rio La Venta archaeological project in Chiapas. He is currently on the faculty of Paleography and Medieval Studies at the University of Bologna. STEFANO MAGGI is Professor of Archaeology in the Roman Provinces, Department of Sciences of Antiquity, at the University of Pavia. He specializes in the development of cityplanning and architecture in the ancient world. His publications include a book on the layout of the forums in the cities of the Roman Cisalpine Republic, a monograph on the Roman amphitheaters of northern Italy, and various essays on the theaters and amphitheaters of the Roman world. PHOTOGRAPHS BY ANTONIO ATTINI David Roberts (1796-1864) was born in Edinburgh into a very humble family but, thanks to his artistic gifts, he succeeded in becoming one of the most appreciated landscape painters of his time. After traveling in Europe, in 1838 he departed for Egypt and the following year he visited the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem and Palestine, the Lebanese coast and Baalbek. Using the drawings from his travels, the Belgian engraver made splendid lithographs which made him famous. This is a collection of the original plates, published for the first time between 1846 and 1848 accompanied by some excerpts from Roberts's travel diary. In addition, every illustration is accompanied by a photograph which shows the same view as it appears today. As well as offering a sample of Roberts's techniques and taste, this book is an excuse for a journey in time through the artistic treasures and the wonderful landscapes of Egypt and the Holy Land.

In this volume of heroic reportage, Colin Monteath, the renowned photographer and Antarctica specialist, presents the spectacular mysteries of the Forgotten Continent. Braving temperatures of -40° F and winds up to 95 mph, Monteath captured magnificent images of a wide range of Terra Incognita's virgin landscapes, from icebergs, glaciers, and ice shelves to volcanoes, mountains, valleys, and plateaus. His skillful, wideranging lens grants us the rare opportunity to bear witness to this pitiless habitat of extremes, where exotic vegetation and fauna such as whales, penguins, and polar bears have developed extraordinary strategies to survive. Adding a powerful poignancy to the collection is the author's artful framing of his subjects in such a way as to underscore the threat of the ever-encroaching effects of global warming. COLIN MONTEATH is a freelance photographer, writer and mountaineer who has traveled widely in the world’s polar and high mountain regions. In 1984 he founded Hedgehog House, photographic library and publishing company, with the principal aim of “increasing the awareness of the need to look after the polar and mountain regions.” He is author of New Zealand – Land of Wind (White Star Publishers, 1996) and Wildlife Cubebook (White Star Publishers, 2007).

New frontiers in Architecture The United Arab Emirates between vision and reality TEXT BY OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI AND LAURA DAGLIO A rampant building boom is transforming the desert lands of the Persian Gulf ’s fabulously wealthy oil-producing countries: they are becoming large metropolitan areas at an exponentially rapid pace. The rush for luxury and the race for the biggest, best and most dazzling feed a burgeoning real-estate market where promoters and large commercial companies create visionary and futuristic architecture. In addition to new luxury towers of record height there are skyscrapers with spectacular rotating sections, almost dream-like qualities of the new forms, and the shaping of enormous artificial islands that change entire coastlines – all part of a general challenge to master, even change, climate and environment. The planners involved belong to some of the largest international studios, firms that have opened new headquarters in the Gulf – in fact, the entire architectural star system is called upon to give a cultural imprint and to express a new concept of the city and its buildings. OSCAR EUGENIO BELLINI born in 1965, is an architect and researcher at the Building Environment Science & Technology Department of the Politecnico di Milano. As a researcher he focuses on project-related themes addressing the relationship between technology and the constructability of architecture. In addition to his research activity he participates in national and international architecture competitions. LAURA DAGLIO who was born in 1970, is an architect. She teaches architectural technology at the Faculty of Architecture and Society at the Politecnico di Milano, where she is a researcher in the Building Environment Science & Technology Department.

Egypt is a country of a thousand facets and striking contrasts, which has now become one of the most popular international tourist destinations, thanks to the marvels of its archaeological treasures, the warm waters and sunny beaches of its Red Sea coast, and the “exotic” attractions of its souks and city streets. However, Egypt is also a modern country pursuing its own model of development, one that attempts to incorporate both tradition and innovation. From the pyramids to the Red Sea coral reefs, from the desert oases to the rocky mountains of the Sinai, from the cultivated fields of the Delta to the modern megalopolis of Cairo, this book uses pictures to illustrate and evoke the many stunning attractions of the land of the pharaohs.
GIORGIO FERRERO, after obtaining a degree in Egyptology with a study on Ancient Nubia, collaborates with Egyptology department of Università degli Studi di Milano and with Civiche Raccolte Archeologiche e Numismatiche in Milan. Splendors of the Khmer Civilization TEXT BY MARILIA ALBANESE Between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, Indochina was ruled by one of the most powerful and productive dynasties in its history: the Khmer. Although influenced by India, the Khmer succeeded in developing a distinctive culture that found its most vivid expression in temples. These unique buildings were made from long-lasting materials such as brick and stone to reflect their function as the homes of the immortal dieties. The first chapter of the book sets out the historical framework of the empire, and then the text explores the various aspects of the Khmer civilization, from the Indian-influenced court to the people of the rice-paddies. It describes the Khmers’ principal religious concepts, their most important myths, and the structure of society, dominated by the powerful figure of the sovereign who, being at the center of the water-management system, guaranteed the survival of his people. The book continues with details concerning the everyday life of the people, their houses, customs, traditions, and most important ceremonies. An ample section of the text is dedicated to archaeological excursions, and explains the development of the civilization’s strongly symbolic art, which depicted the beliefs of an elite ruling class that originally sought to bring Heaven to Earth, but ended in considering itself divine. MARILIA ALBANESE graduated with a degree in Sanskrit and Indology and obtained a diploma in Hindi and Indian Culture. She is Director of the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient and the Education Coordinator at the Civic School of Oriental Cultures and Languages in Milan. For White Star Publishers, she has contributed to the following volumes: Splendors of the Lost Civilizations (1998), The Great Treasures: The Goldsmith’s Art from Ancient Egypt to the 20th Century (1998), The World’s Greatest Royal Palaces (1999), and The Dwellings of Eternity (2000). For the same publisher, she has also written and published Northern India: Guide to the Archaeological Sites (1999) and Ancient India: from the Origins to the 13th Century AD (2001).

Pompeii TEXT BY SALVATORE CIRO NAPPO When Pompeii first came under Roman rule just over 2,000 years ago, it was a town of great prosperity whose cultural life and urban development were in full blossom. It was soon to become a favorite resort of wealthy Romans, and its situation on the fertile ground of Campania made it an attractive location for Roman families to settle. In 79 AD, the life-blood of this booming town with a population of 25,000 was abruptly cut short by the sudden and terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius. In the space of forty-two hours, Pompei’s streets, market-places, homes and shops were completely buried beneath a twentythree foot layer of volcanic ash, seemingly never to be seen again. However, an accidental discovery led to excavation work, which began on the site in the eighteenth century. The rediscovery of an ancient world, caught and preserved at the moment of cataclysm, provoked huge interest. This illuminating archaeological guide captures Pompeii in more than 200 color pictures, showing all the major buildings, streets and artwork in detailed and comprehensive form, to enable the reader to see the city as it appeared on that fatal day before it was buried under tons of molten lava. SALVATORE CIRO NAPPO was born in Poggiomarino (NA) in 1957. In 1981 he received his degree in Classical Literature from the Federico II University in Naples, with a focus on archaeology, and wrote his thesis on “The Villa of Diomedes at Pompeii.” In 1986 he received his post-graduate degree in Integrated Conservation of Cultural Heritage. Since 1993 he has been the scientific director of the Pompeiian Archaeological Institute Study Center. Over the years, he has helped direct numerous archaeological expeditions. He has worked with Italian universities and foreign institutes on Pompeiian research, and he has been a speaker at numerous conventions and seminars in Italy and abroad. He has written various articles for specialized magazines.

Rome TEXT BY SOFIA PESCARIN The peculiarities of the city of Rome, with its three-thousand years of practically uninterrupted occupation, creating perhaps the largest example of a stratified site in the world, force the traveler to move through monuments in a manner that is rarely chronological or typological. For this reason, the archaeological guide follows two different directions in presenting the city: the historical introduction, which explains its development with detailed references to the monuments in order of their appearance; and the guide itself, which provides an accurate description of the sites within the city, divided into four sectors. The goal is to use the monuments of Rome to recount its history and that of the famous and unknown people who inhabited it. The guide is thus designed as a tool for contemporary readers to orient themselves in ancient Rome, and acts as a compass, with points of reference (maps, reconstructions and chronological tables) that offer a continuous explanation of the traveler’s position in time and space at any given moment, whether the voyage is real or virtual. This helps the reader to make an ongoing comparison between the urban structure of ancient Rome and that of the modern city, between everyday, visible Rome and the invisible city of the ancients. Updated and detailed texts, spectacular color images, numerous aerial views embracing the many archaeological areas, maps, and three-dimensional reconstructions help to unlock the secrets of what was once the “Capital of the World”. SOFIA PESCARIN earned a degree in the Topography of Ancient Italy, and has carried out research relative to Roman fortifications and their relationship with the territory. Her main interests concern computational archaeology and, more generally, the application of computing technology to the field of cultural heritage (from the virtual exploration of the archaeological landscape to multimedia projects). She works with the University of Bologna and various bodies including AIACE (International Association of Computational Archaeology) and CINECA (Inter-university Centre for Advanced Calculus) of Bologna.

The coral reef TEXT BY ANGELO MOJETTA In the ideal catalog of the natural wonders on Earth, a prominent position must be reserved for coral reefs. Warm, crystal-clear waters inviting exploration, exuberant life manifesting itself in a myriad of forms and colors – these are the principal features of the extraordinary habitats unique to the tropical regions of our planet, incomparable aquatic environments in equilibrium between the sea and the land and prey to the forces of both. Anyone diving along a coral reef will observe a spectacle comparable only to the lushest equatorial forests. As in that green realm, here in the blue of the ocean humans must come to terms with the exceptional variety and vitality of nature. Life on coral reefs offers continual discoveries and intense experiences for biologists as much as scuba divers and snorkelers encountering this incredible underwater world for the first time. This volume, thanks to scientific texts, splendid photographs, and scrupulously illustrated tables, guides readers in unlocking the secrets of this underwater world. An appendix completes the book, presenting the main fish and invertebrates that populate the reefs of the world through 315 color drawings and brief biological cards. John Lennon In His Life EDITED BY VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS PREFACE BY YOKO ONO LENNON TEXT BY JOHN BLANEY A life-spanning photo-biography of the most revered Beatle, revealing his creative inspirations and capturing key moments in his life. John Lennon is a legend in the history of popular culture, the primary impetus and creative force behind the world’s most beloved and influential rock band, an iconoclastic personality who epitomized the explosiveness of his times, and a musical genius who wrote dozens of timeless songs before his life was tragically cut short in 1980. Featuring family photos and reproductions of documents that bear witness to momentous events and the origins of his “Imaginative” songs, this compilation, like no other, sheds light on his relationships with Paul, George, and Ringo; his attitudes toward mind-expanding drugs, social revolution, and the Vietnam War; the cataclysmic breakup of the Beatles; and the tenderness of his love for Yoko Ono and their only child Sean. Featuring vintage prints and spectacular photos, this colorful illustrated history of hot air ballooning showcases its heroic achievements, the imaginative, often futuristic shapes of the airships, the innovative navigators and engineers, and the popular modern-day events that speckle the heavens with hundreds of balloons. Featuring images of the passing countryside from high aloft and direct testimony from the brave figures who decided to "call upon the clouds" in person, the book culminates with the pageantry of popular ballooning events in places as far flung as France and Albuquerque, New Mexico, where each year almost 800 balloons color the sky, giving their pilots their moments of glory and recalling the birth of aerostatics in the eigtheenth century. BERTRAND PICCARD succeeded with Brian Jones the first nonstop round-the-world balloon flight, achieving the longest flight in terms of both duration and distance in the history of aviation. They were decorated with the Olympic Order and the gold medal of the French Ministry of Youth and Sport and received among others the highest distinctions of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, the National Geographic Society, the Explorer’s Club. Drawing inspiration from George Orwell's Animal Farm, this unusual menagerie of color images features the work of world-famous pho tographers, including Jane Burton, Michael Duva, Tim Flach, Dave King, and Joel Sartore, who use customized studio portraiture techniques to corral horses, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, bunnies, hens, geese, cats and dogs at their most amusing and anthropomorphic. VALERIA MANFERTO DE FABIANIS was born in Vercelli, Italy. She studied Literature and earned her degree in Philosophy from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan. A travel and nature enthusiast, she has collaborated in the production of television documentaries and numerous photojournalism reports for the leading Italian specialist magazines, and has also written the texts for many photography books. In 1984, she and Marcello Bertinetti founded White Star Publishers, of which she became editorial director.

PETS AND WILDLIFE FRONTLIST
Puppies Wet Noses and Fuzzy Bellies PHOTOGRAPHS BY JANE BURTON The ultra-endear ing appeal of the y oungest dogs, in master ful studio por traits. Redirecting their attention and loving gaze to the next generation of cuddly creatures, photographer Jane Burton zoom in on the ultra-endearing and ever so childlike behavior, poses, and facial expressions of puppies, arguably the most beloved of all pets. While mature pooches can appear sly and wizened, the diminutive size, vulnerability, and light-hearted playfulness of their young evoke the same sort of loving and protective response as we have for human children. The expert studio portraiture in this lavish large-format volume feature adorable canine cuties of dozens of breeds nuzzling with their mothers, romping with their siblings, blithely exploring their surroundings, and yipping with curiosity and delight. Juvenile dog lovers of every age will feel they’ve barked up the right tree with this dear and amusing collection, which will have their hearts glowing with puppy love.
JANE BURTON had a lifelong love of animals. She trained as an artist and started by illustrating books and magazines with life like drawings of animals. Some 30 years ago she began photographing domestic animals, especially cats, and now has a worldwide reputation as a cat photographer. Jane always took immense care to ensure that her subjects were thoroughly acclimatized to the studio environment before beginning a photography session. As a consequence, her photographs, almost without exception, show animals that are happy and behaving normally.
