When you think there’s no one left, along comes ‘the one’ By CLARA CARTRETTE News Editor Choosing a wedding date was easy for Lacie Priest and Blake Jacobs. It would have to be after she completes graduate school in June and settles into her job, but before gun hunting season starts. They have decided they will be married on Oct. 5 at Western Prong Baptist Church, which almost — but not quite — fits the above criteria. “One of my groomsmen is from South Carolina,” Blake said. “Hunting season opens earlier there, so he will have to miss one day of hunting. And I’m in his wedding the next week.” Lacie is the daughter of Fred and Terrie Priest of Whiteville. She graduated from Whiteville High School, attended N.C. State University in 2008-09 and graduated from UNC Wilmington in 2012 with a major in business administration. She will graduate at UNCW this month with a master’s in accounting. Blake is the son of Stevie Jacobs of Nakina and Carol Ray of Lake Waccamaw. He graduated from South Columbus High School and went to work for Baker Engineers doing construction inspections for the N.C. Department of Transportation inspecting roadways and bridges. They met at one the shag clubs at North Myrtle Beach.
Blake was there with his dad on Father’s Day two years ago and asked her to go out with him shortly after meeting her. “She finally went out with me,” he said, “but I had to go through friends to get to her.” They were introduced by Shannon Ray, his fourth grade teacher at Old Dock School, who later taught Lacie in fourth grade at Edgewood Elementary in Whiteville. “She told me she taught Lacie in fourth grade, too, and I needed to meet her,” Blake said. “Lacie was working at North Myrtle Beach and was staying with Jeannie Stanaland, who would let me know where they were going to be so I could be there. It was either get a restraining order or go out with me,” he said with a laugh. They went to Margaritaville at Broadway at the Beach on their first date on July 1. The night before, they spent most of the night talking. “We were both thinking there was nobody left for us in Columbus County,” Lacie said. Blake said he was thinking, “I would really like to marry this girl.” On July 4 they went back to Margaritaville for the fireworks show. “We were sitting really close to the water, facing the fireworks, and I told her I had it all set up for her,” Blake said. It was about that time that they both knew that this
Lacie Delane Priest Stephen Blake Jacobs was no casual relationship. They’ve never had a break-up and have been together every day since. They enjoy beach music and shag dancing. “She shags; I just move, or waddle, or wobble,” Blake said with a laugh. They enjoy hunting and just bought a new house at McGee’s Crossroads near Angier. He works in Fayetteville and she will begin working with the Ernst Young accounting firm in Raleigh in August. They decided to find a house somewhere in between their jobs and planned to go house-hunting after Christmas. They toured four homes, went back to the first one they looked at and closed on it within 30 days. “It’s the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood, midway between our jobs,” she said. “That’s how it’s been from the start,” Blake said. “Everything just falls into place where it’s supposed to be.” Blake had special plans for the anniversary of their first date. They went back to Margaritaville on June 30, a day before the first anniversary of their first date. “I tried to wait until midnight, but I couldn’t,” Blake said. About 10 o’clock I took her back to the parking lot where we fell in love.” “He pulled into the lot, he gets out and gets down on one knee,” Lacie said. “She started crying,”
Blake said. “I didn’t look at the ring through my tears,” she said. “When we got back in the truck I said, ‘Do you want this?’ I think I could have asked her without the ring and she would have said yes,” Blake said.
Lacie’s attendants include maid of honor Nichole Stewart of Mt. Pleasant, bridesmaids Caroline Holland of White Lake, Bryanna Ray of Whiteville, Anna Reynolds of Hartsville, S.C., Sadryne Hall of Whiteville, Hannah Ashley of Lake Norman, Emily Shiels of Cary and Savannah Parker of Whiteville. Honorary bridesmaids are Jill Capadanno of Dracut, Mass. Mardi Crucitti of Mooresville, Krystal Mearns, N.Y. and Laura Thomas of Bowie, Md. Blake’s dad will be his best man. Groomsmen are Clint Watts of Fuquay Varina, “a cousin who is like a brother;” Don Hardee of Loris, S.C., Stephen Underwood of Wilmington, Blake Pennington of Nakina, Matt Hardee of Tabor City, Grayson Grainger of Leland and Evan Priest of Whiteville. Ushers are Coleman Inman of Tabor City, Adam Jordan of Elizabethtown, Chandler Ward of Nakina and Kannon White of Whiteville. Blake and Lacie will return to Gatlinburg, Tenn. for their honeymoon, a place they visit every year during the turning of the leaves.

Carmin and John Paul finally made the connection By CLARA CARTRETTE News Editor Friends of Carmin Ray and John Paul Rogers kept trying to pair them up, but there was always an obstacle — she was dating someone, he was shy, “she wouldn’t give me the time of day,” and so on. But when they finally made that unplanned connection, Carmin said she knew right away she loved him. They have been dating since June 2009 and will be married Oct. 12 in an outdoor wedding on Rogers Circle in Tabor City where John Paul’s family lives. Carmin is the daughter of Shannon Ray and Mel Ray of Whiteville and graduated from Whiteville High School. John Paul is the son of Sam and Deborah Rogers of Tabor City and graduated from South Columbus High School. Carmin went to a prom at South Columbus and realized later that John Paul is in the background of some of her photos that were made at the prom. Carmin and John Paul explained how they had some of the same friends, had known each other briefly in high school, and their friends kept asking when he was going to ask her out. Her sister Bryanna and friend Ashley Hardee kept saying, “Y’all got to talk.” But how they got together
Carmin Yvette Ray and John Paul Rogers was coincidental. They were hanging out as a group of friends at the beach, and Carmin, knowing that John Paul was shy, was picking on him and messing with his shirt. “He turned beet red,” she said. “I didn’t know how to react,” he said. The crowd of friends eventually went to John Paul’s beach house. Carmin and her friends later went to her condo, which was not too far away. “He texted me all night,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, I’m in love with
The proposal
this boy.’ The next day we went jet skiing. Both of us were nervous, and the jet ski broke down in the middle of the waterway and a friend had to tow us in. After graduating from East Carolina University with a degree in health services management, John Paul got a job at Roper Hospital and moved to Charleston. She was still at Meredith College in Raleigh in the pre-law program. She changed to nuclear medicine at Johnston Community College and is now studying to take her state board at the end of June or early July. John Paul plans to get a master’s at East Carolina or Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Carmin and John Paul have an active lifestyle with hobbies that include running, golf, tennis, racquetball, any kind of sports and traveling. They enjoy spending time with their families, going out to eat, watching football and other sporting events, and they love comedy and Italian food. They
also have a dog, a Maltese named Paisley. Who’s the best cook? “She is,” John Paul replied immediately. “She’s a wonderful cook.” “I learned from my mama and grandma,” Carmin said. John Paul proposed in Charleston after totally confusing Carmin. “We always went running in Charleston and we like board games,” Carmin said. “We played Scrabble a lot. One day I was getting ready to go running with my hair on top of my head, no makeup and in gym shorts. John Paul came in and asked me to look up something on the computer. Then he comes in the kitchen and asks if I wanted to play Scrabble. I didn’t know what was going on. I thought we were going running, he asks me to look up something on the computer, then asks if I wanted to play Scrabble. I’m wondering what he wants, so
we start playing Scrabble, and he spells out ‘Will you marry me.’ I said, ‘Is this for real?’” “She never said yes,” John Paul said with a laugh. “It was 15 minutes before she said yes.” “He’s my best friend and everybody says we’re perfect for each other,” Carmin said. “I knew before we got engaged that I wanted to be engaged a year before the wedding.” Have they ever had a break-up? “No, not even a day,” they agreed. “It makes me sad when he’s gone,” she said. Bryanna Ray will be her sister’s maid of honor. Bridesmaids include John Paul’s sister Carole Rogers, his cousins Paige Cartrette and Ashleigh Cartrette, Ashley Hardee, Brittany Batten, Erica Jones, Erica Johnson, Sara Picklesimer Baysden, Lindsey Justice and Kelly Strickland. John Paul’s father will be his best man. Groomsmen will be Jonathan Cox, Garrett Ward, John Paul’s uncle John Rogers, Winslow Phipps, Jordan Ford, Trey Allen, Carmin’s cousin Pierson Young, Jason Justice, Courtney Prince and Donovan Watts. Someone commented that they had heard marriage described as someone who lost their freedom in the pursuit of happiness. “We’re OK with that,” Carmin and John Paul agreed.

Deena and Ian are planning a July 27 ceremony Deena Sarvis and Ian Smeigh were weekend lovers the first eight months they dated. He worked night shift at the BB&T Call Center and she worked during the day, but they say it was a good testing period for their relationship. They will exchange wedding vows in a July 27 ceremony at Lu Mil Vineyards in Dublin, followed with a reception there. It will be a traditional ceremony, except it will be outside instead of in a church. Deena is the daughter of Yvonne Sarvis of Whiteville and Danny Sarvis of Leland. She graduated from Whiteville High School and UNC Wilmington with a degree in elementary education. She taught at Hallsboro-Artesia Elementary School for three years, and took this year off to work on a master’s degree in arts education. She has taught pottery classes at Southeastern Community College and crafted around 150 bowls for the Empty Bowls charity a few months ago at Trinity Baptist Church. Ian is the son of Donald Richard and Suzanne Marie Smeigh of Rockingham. He graduated from Richmond County High School and just completed an associate degree in computer information technology at Southeastern Community College. He has been accepted at UNC in Wilmington to pursue a fouryear degree and they plan to
live in Wilmington. Deena and Ian met at Trinity Baptist Church during Bible school. “He had followed his brother Neal to Whiteville,” Deena said. “They were going to Trinity Baptist Church and we wound up in the same Sunday school class.” Their first date was watching the movie “Courageous” in a church outing to Shallotte, “and I had to sit between her and her mom,” Ian said. “It just ended up that way.” Ian said Deena denied his first kiss. “He went in for a kiss and I turned my head,” Deena explained. “I thought he was too young for me, but I thought it was alright to go out with him.” Ian is younger, but only by eight months. They haven’t had a breakup since they started dating, but did admit to one pretty good argument. “But that’s about it,” Ian said. “We waited for the right person,” Deena added. “It’s all about learning to communicate.” “We just need to make sure that we keep God first, otherwise it’s not going work,” Ian added. Deena has been on a lot of Christian mission trips to Africa, Mexico and all over the United States. Ian has also been on some mission trips and was in the choir from
Deena Yvonne Sarvis Ian Joseph Smeigh kindergarten through high school. Deena planned the Empty Bowls fundraiser held at Trinity Baptist several months ago, with proceeds going to the Lake Waccamaw Food Bank. She is a potter who has a kiln and provided around 150 pottery bowls for the event. The effort raised around $2,800. Ian said one man gave a donation and was so impressed with the event that he wrote another check for $50. Deena explained that Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement that anybody can do for local or foreign charities. Bowls are donated and participants choose the ones they want. They get to keep them after they eat soup and bread for a suggested donation. “I had so much help from the church and community,” Deena said of the Empty Bowls project She has also participated in the Jesus Café charity, traveling around on a bus to provide meals for needy children during the summer. Ian proposed to Deena last Aug. 5 at sunrise on Edisto Island near Charleston. His family takes a week’s vacation there every year and he thought it would be a good time.
“At least one morning we get up and watch the sunrise,” he said. “The whole family knew about it, but I knew my sister-in-law would go crazy if she knew it too far ahead. I had my sister wake up and write ‘I have a question’ in the sand.” When Denna read it, Ian
dropped to one knee. “I had a feeling it was coming,” Deena said. Ian said he had told Deena when their relationship got serious that he would like to propose on the beach. “I forgot I had said that but she never did,” he said. “We wanted to get married after he finished school in May or after I finish in July,” Deena said. The couple’s shared interest include exercising and listening to music. They say they don’t have a lot of time because they have been on different schedules. Ian said he was training for a 5K race for Cordova School in Rockingham for special needs children where his mother works. Deena said Ian is a better cook than she is. “I wasn’t going to say that,” he said with a smile. Deena’s maid of honor will be her best friend, Sarah Jayne Otstot of Whiteville. Bridesmaids will be Ian’s sister-in-law, Cara Smeigh of Whiteville, his sister, Leah Smeigh of Rockingham, and Deena’s sister-in-law, Ashley Sarvis of Leland. Neil Smeigh of Whiteville will be his brother’s best man. Groomsmen will be Deena’s brother, Daniel Sarvis of Leland, Mickey Worthington of Whiteville and Derek Otstot of Whiteville. Kenley Smeigh, Ian’s niece, will be the flower girl and Jameson Sarvis, Deena’s nephew, will be the ring bearer.

Whiteville Florist . . . beautiful flowers since 1932
Larry Beltz shows Lacie and Blake the beautiful wedding arrangements available at Whiteville Florist.
Bridal couples have depended on Whiteville Florist to help them make beautiful weddings since 1932. As the oldest florist in the area, Whiteville Florist has proven their value to customers through good times and bad. They have pleased more sweethearts on Valentine’s Day, more mothers on Mother’s Day, and more brides on their wedding day than probably any other business around. Whiteville Florist has been owned by Larry Beltz since 1984, and is a full-service florist and Teleflora, FTD, and AFS associate. They specialize in fresh flowers for all occasions, as well as plants, balloons, stuffed animals, and a wide range of gifts. “I received my initial training from the Schulkens while I was still in high school” said Beltz. “I’ll always appreciate what they taught me, and how nice they were.” Every bride knows how important flowers are to creating the perfect setting for a wedding. That’s why so many brides turn to Whiteville Florist as their floral provider. “We do unique bouquets and floral arrangements for all sorts of ceremonies and receptions, and we handle all the delivery and set-up, so the bride has less to worry about” noted Beltz. In addition to the regular florist services, Larry also provides home decorating for many customers, using silk arrangements and wreaths. “I enjoy working with customers to achieve the look they want for their homes. My customers know they can depend on me to make every effort to ensure their satisfaction.” If experience, convenience, outstanding service and selection are important to you, the choice of a florist is easy – Whiteville Florist, located at 500 S. Madison Street in Whiteville.
