Christmas in 1955

By BEN DOUGLAS Lake Waccamaw

Sixty years ago, Nov. 30, 1955, I am finishing a threeyear tour of duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Having been told that I can sign out of the company on Dec. 1, I arrived in the C.O.’s office at 11:45 p.m. and signed out at 12:01 a.m., Dec. 1, 1955. I then went to a friend’s house to pick up my wife, Faye, and our 5-month old son, Steve. The 1950 Pontiac – especially prepared for travel on the unpaved Alcan Highway (another story for another time) – was filled with our belongings. Steve had a nice bed in the center of the back seat, with possessions stacked to the roof on each side of him. Faye sat in the middle of the front seat without access to the side door because of more ‘stuff ’ packed there. The trunk contained 35 gallons of gas – at 18 cents a gallon – and firewood, in case of an emergency. There was also a folding shovel and other emergency gear (remember, this is winter in Alaska). On top of the car was a large canvas bag with more ‘stuff,’and two spare tires on top of that. Our goal was Christmas in Charlotte, our former home; however some difficulties got in the way. The first was two flat tires before 5 a.m. Thanks for having two spares, easily gotten to, on top of the gear. Finding a motel with cabins, we stopped and pounded on a door. A voice from inside asked if we wanted a room, to take Cabin 3, which was was heated. Sleeping about two hours, we ate breakfast while the inn keeper entertained our son, then they insisted we stay another night for free because we looked exhausted – we were – and they would take care of Steve while we napped. Ice in the valves was the only thing wrong with the flat tires. Whew! After a good night’s sleep, we were underway again.

No more problems except for a very steep, icy hill we discovered around a curve, after a rest stop. We did not have momentum enough to get over and slowed to a stop about halfway up. I took the folding shovel and went to one of several sand boxes located just off the road. As I was spreading sand in front of the wheels, we heard a motor revved up and coming up the hill. A car roared past us and over the top, but shortly a man descended the hill to help us. He was critical of my use of the sand and pointed out that I should put most of it on the downhill side, back the car until we had about three to four feet under and ahead of the tire. It worked just as he had said and we were off again. Driving on hard-packed snow was much better than driving on the summertimegraveled, rutted roads to our first major stop Fort Lewis, Wash. It took several days to get my discharge papers, then we headed south for Los Angeles where we were to meet Alaskan friends. On the way, we passed a sign advertising a drivethrough redwood tree just ahead. The park was closed and un-attended so we drove in and ‘partway’ through the tree. With a squeal of rubber on wood, we were stopped in the middle of the tree. Those tires on top made us too tall to continue. First thought was to let the air out of the tires to reduce our height, but we could not open the doors; we could not break out the windshield or rear window. Would the Spring bring people to find three skeletons? It seemed futile to try to force our way through. Again, fortunately, reverse gear worked and we were allowed to go around the tree and escape. Leaving our friends in Los Angeles –there were more there than we had planned on, but we were very glad to see them – we somehow took a

The puppy

wrong turn and had to waste a half-day getting out of the city. The next stop was Deming, N.M. on Dec. 20 where we had to make a decision on how to make our goal. With too many nights and days on the road, it looked like we would not make it, but every day, at least once and some times more, we broke into song: “We’ll be HOME for Christmas, you can count on us …”. The only solution we could think of was to skip one stop and drive all night. This was when there were no safety belts, no child seats, no speed limits of 55 mph and no interstate highways. Driving with my head out of the open window and fingers holding my eyes open, we stopped often for cold Pepsis – coffee did not seem to work – and ‘pit stops.’ About 30 hours after leaving Deming, we arrived at Tuscaloosa Ala. After 1,181 straight miles we stopped on Dec. 22 for night’s rest. Feeling better about our chances, we left Tuscaloosa, headed for South Carolina. At about 1 p.m. on Dec. 23, the car started acting up and slowing down, in the middle of nowhere. Nursing it along, we got to Greenville just before 5 p.m. at a nice motel, where we were met by a receptionist with the nicest Southern accent we had heard in years. We asked if a mechanic was nearby. She said yes, but he closes and leaves at 5 p.m. sharp. I hustled over to the garage and he had not left, even though it was after five. He heard us arrive and noticed our Alaskan plates. “Are you military?” “Formerly, just discharged and headed home for Christmas!” “O.K., I can fix it.” He adjusted the points at no charge and the car was great again. We arrived in Charlotte on Dec. 24 to shirtsleeve weather – 70 degrees, imagine – and friends and relatives gathering in the yard. We made it!

Snow

Stuffed wolf

My favorite Christmas memory was when it had snowed and my aunt was living. One Christmas morning I was thrilled because it had snowed. after my sister and I opened our presents and we dashed out the door and jumped in the snow. Next my mom came outside and we threw some snow balls at her. Then my aunt came outside and we threw snow balls at her too I remember her laughter like it was yesterday. This was the best Christmas memory ever.

I remember the time at Christmas that I got a 30 inch stuffed animal wolf and a zoomer dino. I was so happy my mama and daddy got them for me. I gave them a big hug and said, “Thank you.” Then, I ran to my stocking and it had a pair of reindeer socks and a bunch of candy. I got the rest of my presents from under the Christmas tree. I got a moon in my room, an air hog UFO and some other stuff. We went to my family’s houses and ate food and then came home and I played in my room with my presents and watched television.

Christmas at my house Christmas is wonderful at my house! At my house, I always put rainbow lights on my Christmas tree. I put up a lot of ornaments at my house. I put my stockings next to my Christmas tree. I always make my stockings. I always go to the mall. My grandma and I always go shopping. I always wrap my presents. My mom cooks Christmas dinner. We have a lot of stuff. I always wake my mom and dad when I get ready to open my presents. I give Santa chocolate mile and chocolate chip cookies. Bow and arrow One Christmas Eve, my family and I went to my aunt house. My grandma was the only one to get me a toy. It was a plastic bow and arrow. The rest of my presents was clothes. Then we went to my house, and I received more gift, and I was thrilled. When Santa came I received an Xbox one, phone, and a three Wheeler and some other gifts. This was the best Christmas memory ever.

Last year four days before Christmas, I got a big present. It was a puppy, and he was only one foot high. I named him Jack. He is brown and has golden eyes. I love him. Jack is a big dog now that he is one year old, and he is fat. He has friend named Luke, a yellow lab. He is just as playful now as he was when I got him. He has a big, thick chain, because he used to escape from his little chain. We can push each other down. We have a good time. Eben Harelson, 7 Amy Greene’s Second Grade Williams Township

Bella Last year on Christmas Day, I got new pet named Bella. Every day I give her a dog treat, because she is a good dog. We train her to do tricks like sitting and rolling over. A special trick is called “snow roll.” She runs after a ball and flips over it. She had a friend named Jasper, a Saint Bernard, but he died. Even though she loves me, she bites my brother’s flip flops off of his feet and takes them away. We go outside every day and play football. Sometimes we race each other around the yard. When I go to school, she waits for me until I get off the bus. Then when I open the door she runs and jumps on me and licks my face! Bella has been my loyal friend for the last the year.

My favorite thing about Christmas is to spend time with my family. I also like to celebrate God’s birthday and to give gifts. My most favorite is to spend time with my family because life is short. We hang Christmas lights together and we light candles that smell like gingerbread. We even stay in our pajamas until it’s brunch time on Christmas Day. My Christmas memories

My favorite Christmas memory is being with my family on Christmas. It is awesome! Everyone is there. My cousins are there, too. Hunter, Greenely, Bryston, Hailey, Pasiley. I love it and we have a feast. Then all of my cousins and me open our presents. I love it. Then we play and clean up. That’s my favorite Christmas memory!

It was Dec. 25, 2014 when I woke up to my mother making her delicious homemade jelly biscuits. My family and I ate them, opened our presents, cleaned up the wrapping paper, and traveled to our grandparents’ house for lunch and sharing our gifts with them. We made cookies and had milk later on, then we took the extra cookies to the rest home for those folks to enjoy! Back at home, we watched Christmas movies with “Charlie Brown Christmas” being my most favorite.

The special gift I gave that year was to my Uncle TT it was a picture of him and me on a chair on Christmas many years ago. That is my special Christmas memory. The Advent Wreath S o wh a t e x a c t l y i s Christmas about? Just look at the advent wreath to find out. With an advent wreath it is easy to see, What is Christmas about? It’s for you and me! Five different candles arranged in a wreath. Joy, love peace, hop and Christ! It’s all so neat! The hope of a savior, the joy of a baby, the love of our God and peace for all, But what about the fifth? The best of them all. It is for the one who cleansed us from sin. Against all battles, Jesus will always win! So next time its Christmas remember all of this, Because Jesus should be everyone’s Christmas wish!

Santa’s here!

One Christmas I was at my MiMi’s house and my family was inside. My cousins Grace and Sam and my brother, Price and I were playing outside with walkie-talkies. We were running around playing tag in the dark trying to find each other. The boys were on one team and the girls on the other team. I kept scaring the boys. It was so much fun! My brother was running so fast because Grace and I were chasing him. All of a sudden there was a big splash and what do you know, Price’s pants and back were covered with black, mushy mud. That was the funniest Christmas. Wow, did he get in trouble!

Our favorite holiday is here. When we get together and celebrate our holiday cheer. The snow, the presents and the Christmas songs. When Christmas is coming Santa won’t be so long. He’s always watching so you better be good. And the good girls and boys will be awarded for acting like they should. Santa’s here Santa’s here With lights shining bright As he gets on his sleigh and will fly out of sight and says “Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!”

My favorite memory

Brookelynn Benton, 7 Amy Greene’s Second Grade Williams Township

The iPad My f avorite Christmas memory is when I was seven years old. I saw a present under our tree and wondered for weeks what it was and if it was for me. I asked my cousin, Kevin, over and over and he wouldn’t tell me. Our other cousin, Angela, came over to visit. She tried to give me clues about the present, but didn’t tell me exactly what it was. My brother, Leo, even talked to me about the present, but would not give me another good clue. I questioned both of them every time I got a chance and even locked them in a room and begged them to tell me, but they were good at keeping the surprise. I guessed a board game, but found out Christmas morning when I opened it that I was wrong. It was an iPad and I was so happy. It was worth waiting all of those days for a gift that I really wanted.

My favorite thing about Christmas is decorating the tree with my parents. I help mom and dad put the Christmas tree up. We put lights on it and decorate it with bows and angels. Mom lets me put pictures on the tree. We wrap up presents and put them under the tree. We have lots of fun decorating the tree. Kayley Ann Carter, 7 Erica Jackson’s Second Grade Evergreen Elementary

We have a cookout and eat chicken. We play games like football and tic-tac-toe. Last, my family gets a Christmas tree and we decorate it. We put a star on top. and Africa. My mother served a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner. After dinner, the gifts were distributed. Chris, Pete and Arthur gave me a doll with real hair, a stove with pots and pans, a sink that held water, and table and chairs. I was overwhelmed, thankful and surprised. My mother gave me the gifts to give them. I did. One box each. They each received one pair of black socks. I remember feeling so bad and embarrassed. They had given me so much and I gave them one pair of black socks. As I grew and matured, I realized that the socks were only a small part of their gift. Come Let Us Adore Him! From Brenda Worley Realty

December The lights are bright at the dark of night. The carolers are singing the bells are ringing. Santa is laughing with joy. I like December. You are bright as the sun. Jolly and so much fun.

Eight years ago there was a two-year-old little girl named, Emma. She had two brothers, who were seven and twelve. Wyatt, Chandler, and Emma wanted a trampoline for Christmas. As a matter of fact that is all the two brothers put on their usually lengthy Christmas wish lists. I am sure that Emma would have listed it too if she had known how to write a letter to Santa. On Christmas Day, the boys jumped out of bed and raced to the Christmas tree. They were stopped in their tracks by their mom. She said, “Hold, let me wake up your sister so she can open presents, too. I also need to wake up your dad so he can watch you.” After she got Emma, she came back to the tree and everyone began tearing open the boxes. Monster trucks, baby dolls, Nerf guns, and Barbies were scattered everywhere. After every gift was opened, their dad said, “Do you want to look outside?” Chandler and Wyatt stood at the window and looking outside exclaimed together, “It is snowing!” “Yeah, but that wasn’t my point boys,” sighed their dad. “Look to the right.” “Oh my goodness! A trampoline,” said the boys. All their Christmas dreams came true that day.

Terry, Skyler, and Conner scared me and I yelled because I was scared. We played a game we call “trying to scare me.” We played hide and seek in the dark. It was fun. When we were done we played scare me and hide and seek in the dark together and it was fun. It was almost time to go. So we got to play with our toys and we ate our treats. Then it was time to go. We got in the car and went home. My mom looked on her phone and saw that Santa left the North Pole. And we got ready for bed. The next morning, I saw presents under the tree. I had a train and other stuff. When everyone woke up we got to open the presents. I loved all of them. They were amazing and fun to play with. That Christmas was the Christmas that I remember the most. The End! Malaya Fant, 8 Haylea Sullivan’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

Last year for Christmas, me and my family went to church. After church, we went to our pastor’s house. There were many more people that went too. I had friends that were there too and we played secret spy. After a while, we all went to go get ready to eat. Before we ate, we g ave thanks to God. There were so many things to eat that I didn’t know what I wanted. Then, I saw some soup I decided to try. The soup was made up of seafood and it was very good. After I ate it all, I asked for more. Then after I finished, I went to play with my tablet with my friends. Later, we went outside to play hide and seek. Then, our pastor came and told us to come inside because we were going to make Christmas cookies. After we finished making the cookies, my sister helped put the cookies in the oven. We also got to make our own on Sunday. After a long and fun night, we went home because it was late and my mother doesn’t like us staying out long.

My best Christmas My best Christmas was when I was 9, because I got what I really wanted. I got a bike, a scooter, and a DS. The best of thing all was that I had my family Cameron, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

New gamers On my Christmas I got some new games for Christmas and some toys and clothes and we played in snow and had fun. Semaj, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

My favorite Christmas My f avorite Christmas memory was I whenever I stayed at dad’s house, I was only 9 years old and about two years ago and it was my brother Caleb, Sage, Ana, Paris, Jasmine, Gage, my dad, stepmom and me. That night all the kids had to sleep in Ana and Jasmine’s room so that my dad and step mom could wrap all the presents up for us the next day. M y s t e p b ro t h e r G a g e couldn’t go to sleep so he had to go into the other room and sleep. The next day we all woke up and went into the living room and the whole living room was filled with presents for all of us, I got a lot of stuff that was on my list like vans, regular show stuff because that’s what I liked at the time. Everyone was really happy and we all played around with each other. My favorite Christmas was at dads because all my siblings were there with me and then later on that day Sage and me went to my grandma’s house to get more presents from everyone including my mom. Devyn, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

My Christmas memory was when I went to my grandma’s house in the morning. We had waffles, grits, and orange juice. Then, I went outside. Then, my mom came and we gave out presents and my aunt came. And I played with her tablet. I was in the bed and she was in the living room. My papa has two dogs. I like to play with then. We go to my grandma’s sunroom and get in the hot tub to relax. When it was time I had put spy stuff around the house so when Santa comes I can get proof to show my classmates and Jakob helped me. We called ourselves Santa Hunters then I saw Santa and another night a show came out called Santa Hunters on Nick. We did not change our name to find Santa. More about my Christmas memory, the presents I got: I got an electric guitar that is black, a tablet, a motorcycle, a bowling ball, a toy I like to still play with, a dog, a DS, and 20 dollars. I gave out some things too like perfume, love, and prayer. Before Christmas break, I gave a gift to Paiton. The gift was a teddy bear and she said, “Thank you!” Everybody said, “Thank you for the chocolate.” I said, “You’re welcome!” Ms. Smith got an apple. We watched Alex and the Terrible Day. We got blankets to lay on. Let us get back to my presents, I got an Xbox 360 and some video games. Our family had a funny Christmas tree. It was tiny and cute. My cousin said, “We must be at the wrong house, because in the picture it was tall.” My mother said, “Was it big or was it little?” That is my Christmas memory! I loved my family, classmates, and teacher. I wish you a happy Christmas this year and Merry Christmas! I like to trick my brother on Christmas Eve and tell him that Santa already came.

A Christmas memory for me is when I got what I always wanted. A toy helicopter. But instead of one, I got three of them. Two of them were small but one of them were big. It was at least one yard long and the two sets of big rotors were at least one foot long and the short one was about five inches long so it was huge. It even had a camera on it so we flew it and took a video and we watched it over and over again and it was the best Christmas ever. Zachary, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

My favorite Christmas My favorite Christmas was on Christmas EVE when my g randma Jean bought me to the store and let me pick out my presents because she didn’t know what I would like because I was older. She didn’t know what I would like. Then she told me that I need to slow down on growing because there was almost nothing in the world I would like and that made me smile because I was the littlest and I was 9 years old and the rest of my brothers and sisters was 2 to 4 years older than me. My grandma said do you want money I said no I just get me some of the things I wanted and that’s my favorite. Kyleigh, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

I woke up, got out of bed and saw a note. It gave me clues to the present I wanted most. I found one in the fridge, in the bathroom, and other places too. Then I finally found a gocart that was red. And then I found other figures for my Disney infinity 1.0. I had got Dash and Rapunzel, then I played with Rapunzel on the Wii. I also got a real electric guitar! I played it ALL day. I got a Nerf Rebel Bow and arrow too. I got some shirts and shorts and pants also. Then I opened my next present. ‘’O.M.G! I GOT MY VERY OWN 1 FOOT TABLET. I was so excited. Then I got some more clothes. I got jewelry, sofa stuff, toys, food and other stuff. Then we went to my gaga’s and my meme’s house and opened presents. And that’s all I remember about that I hope you enjoyed my Christmas memory. Paiton Lanier, 8 Haylea Sullivan’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

Olaf ’s waffles My best Christmas memory was when I received an Olaf waffle maker. I made waffles for my whole family. Another great Christmas was when I got a snow cone maker. I made my aunt and my brother one. Later that night I went to a relative’s house and ate. There was turkey, stuffing, beans, and rice. Later I got a tablet and was able to get lots of games. Later I got an Elsa shirt. I wore the shirt all day and sang the song 13 times. My 5th favorite memory was when I got a lego toy. It made so much noise my parents screamed their heads off. Another gift I got was a reborn doll. It talked, walked, and ate anything. My last but emotional memory was when we sang carols to the kids at St. Jude. They were so happy. It warmed our hearts to see them so happy. We did this for Dax and the other kids with cancer. We love you. Rock on St. Jude.

Mom Dear Mom, I hope you will have a good Christmas. Mom did you know that I am getting a pingpong table? I hope you do not have to work on Christmas. I hope you will come to the Christmas play. I know you will get a present for me and I will get one for you. Merry Christmas, Mom! Love, Joseph Cartrette, 10 Julia Hardwick’s 4th grade Williams Township

How Christmas was born On a cold winter night as the stars filled the sky three wise men were carrying gold, frankincense and myrrh, following a star shining brightly above a baby. Not any ordinary baby, His name was Jesus. When he was born he did not cry for he was perfect. He laid his head down in the manger and Mary was happy. Later three shepherds arrived explaining how some angels told them a special baby was born. When the shepherds left they praised God for their savior. When the wise men got there they gave the gifts to the new king. The king sent them to tell him where he was, he told them he wanted to worship him but he really wanted to kill him. In a dream God told the wise men about King Herod’s trick so they went back home a different way. Later an angel told Joseph to get Mary and Jesus and move to Egypt because of the kings’ trick. So they did until the king died. Merry Christmas!

My favorite Christmas

It was the day before Christmas and everybody was happy. They were playing and singing and you could hear the laughter! When the sun becomes the moon, every light goes out. The tree is decorated, cookies on the table for St. Nick Every child is sleeping tucked in their beds. When St. Nick comes we are all asleep! The next morning we wake up hoping he has come! My favorite Christmas memory My favorite Christmas memory is when we had ice and no snow! First, my uncle Josh drove us on the four wheeler. Uncle Josh used the top of the wheel barrow and tied a rope to it and drove us around in it. My cousins and I were doing a donut on the four wheeler. When we were doing a donut, we all got thrown out and hit the ice. After we rode the four wheeler we opened presents. We all received our own laptops. After we opened presents we ate. We ate ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and rolls. That was my favorite Christmas memory! Lilly Reaves, 9 Karina Ulfsax’s 4th Grade, Acme-Delco Elementary

A great Christmas When it was Christmas Eve I took a shower and got dressed. Then I and my family drove to my grandma’s house. When we arrived I saw a decorated Christmas tree, it was beautiful, and it had presents on the bottom. I and my family had to sleep over. My grandma told us we could sleep in the living room. When everyone was going to sleep including me I was thinking about Christmas, all the presents, and what was in them. I wondered witch one would be mine. Then I went to sleep. The next day, it was Christmas I was so excited! All the adults did the food while the kids helped. All the babies had to stay on the couch, watch TV, and they got to play. When the food was ready we let it cool down. While the food was cooling down we played games. When we got done playing games we went to serve ourselves. Then we went to the table, sat down, and started to eat. When everyone got done eating the kids put on their coats, hats, ear muffs, gloves, or mittens and went outside to play in the snow. While the kids we’re playing in the snow the adults we’re talking. I, my cousins, and my sisters made snow angels, and snow mans. All of us kept slipping except for one of my sisters. Then my sister helped us all up and we went inside. We took off all our winter stuff and sat down. Then all the kids got up and go t in rows from biggest to smallest. Then all the kids sang Rudolph the red nose reindeer. After that everyone went to get there presents from the Christmas tree. They looked at each tag from each present to look if it was theirs and who it’s from. We looked at everyone’s presents. I received a white and pink pair of shoes from my grandma and a Columbia purplish jacket from my aunt. It was getting dark so everyone put there presents away and went to sleep. It was soon morning again a day after Christmas’’. Everyone woke up, got there stuff put them in the car, and they drove back to their homes. At least 20 presents Last Christmas was the greatest. My big brother came to my house. We had a big Christmas dinner party. My dinner was really good. I woke up extra early to open my presents for Christmas. I got at least 20 presents. My little brother, Angel, got a dirt bike and my dad let him ride it. My family roasted marshmallows in the fire. Emily, my little niece, and I opened up all our presents together and played with our new toys. Last Christmas was the best and I will never forget that Christmas. It was the best. My Christmas memory was when my grandparents bought me an iPod, iPhone, clothes, shoes and a four-wheeler. Then we dumped out our stockings. Then we went to Nana’s and Papa’s house, when they were together, and they bought me boots, a suitcase and a bike and there was more, but I don’t remember all of the other things they got me because this was two years ago. Then I went to my Grandma Farmer’s house and we ate there and we unwrapped presents and we had a great Christmas. My grandma gave me $100 for Christmas. Then that night, we played

in the snow and it was fun because all of my family played in the snow. That was the best Christmas ever. Charity King, 10 Karina Ulfsax’s Fourth Grade Acme Delco Elementary School

Me, my sister, my brother, my cousin in law, and my cousin went outside and had a snowball fight. Also, we went walking on the road, it was really slippery. We were sliding on the ice. Later on we went inside and packed up. We were going to Florida. When we were leaving, we passed too many stores. We stopped at a hotel called Holiday Inn. We slept there for five days. We left on Friday and got home on Saturday. And on Saturday was Christmas. The house was full of presents. And I said, ‘’OMG.’’ I got a tablet, a reindeer that laughs too much, a laptop, a big phone, some new clothes, and boots. I also got five puppies and puppies that are robots. That was in 2014. My Christmas memory was when we were getting ready to go outside in the snow. And when we got out I made a very Curtis Campbell, 6 big snowball. And I think it Tammy Patrick’s First Grade was the size of my brother. Whiteville Primary So we tried to pick it up to take it to the front yard but we couldn’t. So then my brother came and he and I started to take of the snow and instead of taking the snow off we started to rip the whole thing out and we did it until I had no snowball at all. Next we had a snowball fight and then we came inside and got a lot warm so we all tried to take it away and we all had a chance to get warm. Another Christmas memory and one reason everyone should believe in Santa Claus is cause one time only me, mom, sister, and my brother where the only ones at the house is cause my Dad was out with his friends and then Ember Ward, 9 my brother Oscar was at a Tracy Cox’s Third Grade party like always we were at Williams Towhnship home well when I was playing my tablet my mom was at the kitchen and so was I and then I went to the living room and I sat on the coach and I suddenly looked at the tree and I saw that the presents were at the tree and I hollered ‘ THE PRESENTS ARE HERE’’ so we came running in and then I had clean it up myself. My favorite Christmas My f avorite Christmas memory is getting a charged up battery dirt bike. I rode the wheels off of it. It doesn’t work anymore. I remember I walked it. I rode it as fast as it could go. I had to charge it and I had to wear socks on my hands because I didn’t have the gloves for it. So I stuck with socks then after that I got my fingers stuck in my sprocket. And I raced Riley and I scared him because he thought I hit him but I didn’t. I was sliding all over the driveway and the road too. I rode it playing with my duck call. And I hit a bump and I said “Ow!” I drifted all over our driveway and road and hit bumps. I did tricks. Jesse, which is my dad, made a track for me and Riley. I don’t like the bumps on it. I and my brother raced each other my sprocket got smaller and smaller my chain kept clicking. I made faster burn outs on the driveway and chased birds and chickens. I laid down, drove on it. I pretended I shifted it and I put a lot of stickers on it and me and my brother Riley high fived each other when we drove past each other, it was so fun. My dirt bike was blue. I cleaned it. I cleaned the rims to make it looked nice and shiny too. Kyle, 9 Linda Parker’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

No power One day, my whole family was in the house. The power went out, but my dad had a generator. My cousins came over so they can stay warm. So all of the kids went in my Mom and Dad’s room. The adults stayed in the living room. The people who slept in the bed was Joshua, Lilly, Bridget, Kenzie, and Chloe. The dads slept on a sofa and the moms slept on the floor. So all of the kids stayed up half the night, but it was worth it. Then we woke up and I heard Kenzie yell, “It’s snowing.” All of the children put on their coats and went outside. Joshua threw a snowball at Lilly and got in trouble. But Lilly was sore. Bridget Reaves, 9 Haylea Sullivan’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

Christmas as a child By DOROTHY BATTEN WINNIES Chadbourn I was seven or eight years old that year in the early nineteen thirties. It was the fall of the year and nearing the Christmas holidays. My sister, Louise, and I were students at Hallsboro High School. My younger brother, Gordon, was not old enough to go to school at that time. After Thanksgiving, all three of us began talking about that fat man who wears a bright red suit with a wide black belt, and big belt buckle, and has a well manicured long white beard. Of course, we were thinking about Santa Claus and wondering what he would bring us that year for Christmas. Money was scarce back then and we really didn’t have our hopes and expectations too high. We made our lists mostly consisting of some new

clothes, candy, fruit, and a few other things. A few weeks before Christmas my school teacher assigned her students the project of writing a letter to Santa Claus. We were all excited because we knew that if we wrote a letter to Santa, we surely would receive more gifts. Naturally, we knew we were to include our qualifications… like how “good” we had been during the year…never mentioning the not so good behavior. It seems that it took us more than one school day to finish our letters. When we had our letters all ready to mail we were told to take them home and our parents would help us mail them. When I asked my Daddy for Santa’s address, this is what he told me: “Address your letter to Santa Claus; on the second line, Mr. Millard F. Penny; on the third line the street number; and the Wilmington, N.C. Oh, yes, a few days before

Christmas, a package arrived at our rural mail box about three miles north of Hallsboro. It was a small box addressed to me in care of my Dad and a return address of, “Santa Claus, the North Pole”. All eyes were on the package. Daddy took off the twine and outer layers of wrapping paper. Then came the time for the final glimpse in the box. There she was! The doll that I had asked Santa Claus for when I wrote him my letter. She was beautiful. She had moveable arms and legs, short reddish blonde curly hair and was wearing a light blue organdy dress trimmed with white lace. That was my most wonderful Christmas! I still have my Christmas doll of long ago (in pieces that is) because over the years my siblings and I, along with my five children, have made even life for a doll “tuff ”. Yes, folks there was a Santa Claus back in the early 1930’s! And yes, there is a Santa Claus today!

My favorite tradition

My favorite Christmas memory

Every year on Christmas day my family and I go to grandmother’s house. We get to spend time with family members. While at grandmother’s we eat a good Christmas dinner. We have delicious foods like ham, green beans, rolls, tomatoes and rice. After everyone has finished eating we begin to open presents. I like to see what everyone gets. This is my favorite part because I love Emma Rhodes, 10 throwing the wrapping paper Kristy Worley’s 5th Grade class around. My favorite Christmas tradition is decorating the tree. I get to spend time with my family. The beautiful lights are so wonderful. When we decorate the tree the youngest gets to put the star on top. Sometimes Andrew gets mad because I am the youngest, so I let him put the star on top. I love looking at the old ornaments, they are amazing.

My favorite Christmas My favorite Christmas gifts was when I got my tablet, my phone, my four-wheeler, my dirt bike, my go cart and my laptop. Landon, 8 Linda Parker’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

My favorite Christmas My favorite Christmas memory is when I got my Guinea pig. My family thought there was only one but then my dad looked under the little pouch of hay and then we saw a black, white and brown fur ball. When we saw the cage we thought it was a bunk bed because it had a ramp connected to the cage. We named the brown and white one Buddy and the black, brown and white one Gizmo. The next year they got fatter. So as it got closer to Christmas my mom bought them a stocking with their name and their picture on it. The woman who made them sewed them. So it got closer to Christmas we made our Santa letters. Our Guinea pig, Gizmo Squad, wanted a big cabbage ball of his own but I told him that Santa could not fit it in his little stoking.

When I was 8 When I was 8 and younger, I got lots of toys for Christmas. I had a toy vacuum so when my mommy cleaned up around the house I could too! I got a lot of baby dolls I got them because I just wanted to do their hair and change their clothes for a fashion show. Then I got this thing I wanted so bad I started to cry, it is called an Easy-Bake-Oven. I could cook anything I wanted but I had to buy it at the store not from your house. The most important thing on my mind was really a tablet and once I got it I would not stop playing it. My papa and my mom brought me one. I downloaded so many games I did not know what to play.

They all were good games. When I was in the middle of a game I would stop to play another after another and keep on doing it. That is most of the stuff I have gotten. But there is one more toy I got there was these rubber bands you could make any-

thing you want with them. This year, I hope I get a lot of stuff but I can’t tell no one but Santa. It is a secret with me and him.

My Christmas wish is to be a super hero. Then I can save people and stop robbers from robbing banks. Then I can fly and will be stronger. Nobody would be able to stop me. I also want it to snow for Christmas. Then I can throw snow balls, build a fort, and then build a snow man.

The best Christmas I ever had was when I got a new dirt bike and play-station four. My cousins and I would jump dirt hills and drive around the dirt track with the new dirt bikes. We raced our dirt bikes to see who would win. We went to my Aunts house to eat Christmas dinner. We had ham, pastry, chicken, fat back, rice and gravy. Also, we had the best desserts like oreo balls, pound cake and brownies. After dinner, my dad and I killed an eight point deer while hunting.

TV and a dog

Xbox and more

One Christmas day, I got a brand new T.V. and a dog. my sister got some Legos and a tablet. Then we went to my grandma’s house and we had turkey, ham, and stuffing. Then we played with my nephew and my Uncle Anwar. Then we played with my nephew’s toys. He had a dirt bike and a remote control truck. It was cool. When we got home it was time for bed. Me and my sister could not go to sleep we were too busy playing with my dog. The next day my mama had forgot about two other toys and we both got a phone and a Wii! We spent 3 hours playing it and it was cool. I can’t believe Santa ate the cookies we made. I thought they were not that good. He left the plate and the cup on the table. Then we cleaned up Santa’s mess and played with our toys. IT WAS THE BEST CHISTMAS EVER!

The Christmas of 2014 was awesome, there were all kinds of presents, never in my life have I felt so good in my life. I had more games for my Xbox and another phone card. The tree was still full after the present opening. I had more presents than anyone. No one had anymore presents than me. My mom had the second most presents, the third most presents goes to my Aunt Jasmine. The 4th goes to my grandma, but I had the most presents of all. Nobody had any big presents, yet. I had gotten the first big present, so the others had to wait literally 30 minutes to get their big present. The tree was not empty yet. When the tree was empty I played with everything I had. Me and my mom went home for the day.

New bike Last Christmas night, I slept on the couch by my Christmas tree and I fell asleep. Then, I woke up the next day. I saw a bike that my dad had brought me and my brother. My next present was a Bobcat coat. I said, “I did not want a Bobcat coat. I want a drake coat.” I opened my other present that my dad got me and it was a dream pillow. My brother got my mom a butterfly ring. I got my mean brother a gift card that said, “I love you for all my life and I will never turn my back on you.” He said, “Thanks, same to you brother.” My mom said, “I’m proud of yall two.” Me and my brother and dad got my mom a big present. It was a picture frame. It cost $200. I had $30, my dad had $150 and my brother had $20. That equals $200. I got one more thing for me. I got new games that cost $20 altogether. The games were NFL Madden 25 and the other one was Duck Dynasty. The NFL game was fun. And so was Duck Dynasty. That night, we played the two games. After that, we ate dinner, then played hide-and-seek. Before hide-and-seek, I rode my dirt bike and my brother rode his, too. We wrecked into each other and he flipped. I flipped too and we laughed real hard and I got a present for my dad. It was a four-wheeler. He said, “Thank you son.” I got a gift card for him that said, “I love you Dad, from top to bottom.” My aunt got my dad a pair of Kevin Durant shoes that were Christmas colors. I said, “Those are pretty Aunt. Thanks for Dad’s shoes.” At the end of Christmas, we all said, “We love yall! Good night!” Anthony Brown, 9 Haylea Sullivan’s Third Grade, Acme Delco Elementary

One Christmas Eve

Christmas ‘14

One Christmas Eve my dad and I went to Bass Pro Shop just to look around. I had been asking for a gun. I thought about it and remembered that back at home all of the presents were under the tree. I knew that none of the wrapped gifts were shaped like a gun box. I looked at my dad and told him that if he didn’t mind I would just sit in the car. Now to myself I was thinking, maybe he will go inside if I don’t go with him to buy my gun. So I let him go into the mall by himself. About an hour later, he walked back out with an Easy Bake Oven box. Now what was I going to do with an Easy Bake? I got mad, but I tried real hard not to show that in my face. We were heading home and it was late at night so we watched the movie, Prancer. I was still trying not to look or feel angry, but it was really hard. I fell asleep and we woke up early Christmas morning to open our presents and I couldn’t believe my eyes! I saw the Easy Bake Oven box and there it was, a Browning automatic 12 gauge shotgun. I ran to my Mama and Daddy and hugged them so hard. Now I could go dove hunting with him because I had a gun of my own to use! Christmas 2014 was great because as I was helping my mom get the presents out, I stumbled over another present which was for my mom. The best holiday I think Christmas is the best holiday ever because we get to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We get to unwrap presents from Santa the big jolly fellow in the red suit with the white beard. The family is together celebrating the season and we decorate the tree together. The best holiday I like Christmas the best for the holiday seasons. The reason why I do is because my birthday is only four days after and I get lots of presents on Christmas. Really, I like spending time with my family too. Isabella Jett, 8 Karen Cribb’s Second Grade Evergreen Elementary

The best holiday I think Christmas is the best holiday because Jesus is born. Jesus is the best person in the whole world. He gave us the best present of all, he gave his life for our sins. Excited for snow One Christmas morning, I woke up so excited. I enjoyed a breakfast of omelets and milk and sat on the couch waiting for everyone to finish. To my surprise it began to snow! We went outside as a family to play and at first it was boys against girls in our snow wars. We were so tired because we built a snowman. I had no idea how much work that would take. After we finished our snowman, we came back inside to warm ourselves and drank hot chocolate. By then it was nighttime and we began opening our presents and enjoy our gifts and time with our family. It was a tiring day, but so much fun! When I was seven years old I wanted the most gifts for Christmas that I can remember. It was three days before Christmas, my favorite gift was a new dirt bike, since I crashed the other one I had, but I also wanted a Samsung Galaxy 3, a watch, xBox360, and a pair of Kobe Bryant shoes. I woke up early on Christmas Eve and went downstairs and saw my sister and her husband. My nephews, Gage and Cooper, were also there. They gave me a gift that I was not allowed to open until Christmas. I gave them their gifts which were pairs of Jordans and they spent the night with us that year. I stayed up all night to make sure that I did not sleep in. When 7:30 a.m.came around, I made some coffee for the family and woke my parents. I went downstairs at 9 o’clock and when I opened my three gifts, they were exactly what I had asked for that year on my long list! My parents got me the electronics, my nephews got me shoes, my grandparents got me a watch and lastly, I got that dirt bike! It was the best Christmas of my whole life. My Christmas tradition

Why Christmas is special to me

One day before it was Christmas, my family and I were celebrating by giving out presents. Later we finished eating and shared some special messages to each other. I liked this because we actually did something fun together as a family. I loved when we celebrated together as a family. That’s why I love my family and think they are the best!

I like Christmas because you get video games, toys and all kinds of things. It might snow at your house on Christmas and you can go play in the snow. You can leave cookies for Santa on Christmas night. If you have been bad Santa might not give any presents to you. If you see Santa, his magic might go away. Don’t stay up or Santa will not go to your house. Sometimes Santa might leave a note for you to read. Then you get up to see what Santa left you. Then you open the presents then go back to bed and get up and play with your toys. Sometimes you might hear Santa say ‘’Ho, ho, ho Merry Christmas.” You can leave some food for Santa’s reindeer. You might see some reindeer tracks in your yard. Your parent’s might help Santa with the presents so he will not break them. Be glad what Santa got you because he could have not given you anything! The reason I like Christmas is because it is God’s birthday. Santa might give your dog a present. He gave my dog something. Even your parent’s will get a present. One time my parent’s got a present from Santa. I like Christmas! Shane Dorsch, 10 Kim Andrews’ Fourth Grade Old Dock Elementary

Last Christmas Last Christmas morning, I was the first to wake up. I went to the dining room where the tree was overloaded with wrapped boxes. I woke up everybody and they saw all the presents under the tree. We opened them all one by one. I was first. I got a sling shot with glass marbles. The next five to eight presents were clothes. The next ten to twenty, I got really cool stuff. I had a really great Christmas. Jayce George, 10 Kim Andrews’ Fourth Grade Old Dock Elementary

My Christmas tradition Every year my family and I celebrate Christmas at my house. We have a lot of fun! We usually get together and all of my family and friends are there. We eat, play with each other and talk a lot. The thing that I don’t like about Christmas is that three years ago exactly on Christmas day the greatest grandma I have ever met died. She was so sweet and her name was Allie Mae Watts. I loved her so much, but every Christmas my Nana and I pray to God, and send a message to my grandma. I wish she was still here. The best thing I like about Christmas is seeing my family and celebrating the birth of Jesus. At my church every year we do Christmas in August. T he kids my a g e do a Christmas play, and so does the youth. There are a lot of people at our church when we do the Christmas play, but no matter who dies and when you see your family you will always have Jesus in you. Christmas I was 7 years old that morning. I woke up and ran out to the window and peered outside. There was snow everywhere and icicles too. I woke up the rest of my family and we played outside. When mama called we ran to open our presents. We knew it was Christmas day. I got many new things. We all g athered round the Christmas tree and sang Christmas carols. We ate and drank hot cocoa. We enjoyed eating the marshmallows out of the hot cocoa. We played with our Christmas presents until it was night time. We all knew we had all enjoyed a Christmas. Sara Norris, 9 Kim Andrews’ Fourth Grade Old Dock Elementary

Maceilyn Rodriguez, 6 Jonetta Brown’s First Grade Whiteville Primary

The day before Christmas It was the day before Christmas and I was very sad and excited all at the same time. The reason I was very sad was because my elf, Chloe Bell, was going to have to leave. Well, the reason why I was excited was because I was so ready for Christmas. I don’t think it was fair for my cat to get her present on Christmas Eve. She wanted her present so bad and she got what she wanted, catnip and toys. This is funny. She was fooled. We had some new cat bowls and more cat toys wrapped up for her. Well, I believe that everyone will love their presents. I hope so because I used my money. Tomie-Lynn Sing, 9 Kim Andrews’ Fourth Grade Old Dock Elementary

Open early My favorite Christmas memory was last Christmas at 7 a.m, when my uncle was beside our bed and he said “Maybe your mama will let you and Zelle (my sister) open your gifts now.” Then, I said “Yeah, let’s go ask mama now.” Then we went in the living room to find mama. My mama, stepdad, grandma, uncle, and auntie were in the living room. I was so happy! I went to the side where my gifts were. We opened some of our gifts while mama took pictures. She loves taking pictures. We played with our new stuff all day!

My favorite Christmas memory is when I was decorating the tree with my grandma. That was the first time I decorated a tree with her. We put the ornaments on the Christmas tree. Christmas favorites Do you know why I like Christmas? What I like about Christmas is my family getting together! I like it because we get to talk about things together. I also go to my nana’s house so we can see everyone and get presents. My nana tells us about Jesus’s birth. I have fun with my family. What I also like about Christmas is the presents I receive. What I want for Christmas this year is some cologne so I don’t have to go to my daddy’s room to get his cologne. I also want some books. The ones I want are “Who was _______?” I want them because they tell me facts about people. I also want a shot gun pump and some high tops. My house has a Christmas tree in it. We also have two little trees when you walk in. We also have a Christmas tree cover for the mailbox. This is my Christmas favorites! Noah Greene, 10 Julia Hardwick’s 4th grade Williams Township

Christmas Day Christmas has a lot of fun things. We celebrate Jesus’ birthday on Christmas. Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. Christmas is a perfect holiday to go to church. My baby-sister and me make a promise to sleep good on Christmas Eve. Santa won’t come to your house when you’re awake. Santa is great, but not as great as God and Jesus. Christmas brings us joy. Christmas is when we put up Christmas trees and colorful lights. Rudolph is the best reindeer that Santa has. They made a song up about Rudolph. It is very popular. Santa is the best on Christmas for bringing us gifts. I thank Santa on Christmas, and God, too!!! This is how we celebrate Christmas. Merry Christmas! My favorite thing about Christmas is when me and my family spend time together. I like when we open our presents and eat dinner. Me and my cousins always play together.

Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. I don’t want you to come this year because I want you to give to the people who are being honest, nice, and generous to other people. People who are being greedy are just thinking about themselves. They should be thankful for what they have. Kayla is giving to the kids in her class because they will get just a little for Christmas. Kayla is a teacher and she helps special kids. All kids are special, but hers are extra special. She is a very loving person. I love her. She is my step mom. Our church is packing shoe boxes for people in different countries. In children’s church we get to write letters to people for Christmas. Our church is also getting toys for children. I hope the children who are being honest, nice, and generous get what they want for Christmas. Merry Christmas. Love your friend,

Dear Santa, Please don`t come this year. There are kids that don`t have any toys because they are in foster homes and orphanages. Just because they are less fortunate doesn`t mean they shouldn`t get presents! It is not their fault they are not with their parents. You have to think about it like this – they’re probably scared to death. They need love and faith. If they are going to get anywhere in life. They need a push. Please just consider it. Sincerely, Noah Godwin Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year because you have to help other kids. I still have what I got from you last year, so you can help them instead. That way they can be happy. Please make the other kids happy. Help them Santa. wait to open the Christmas presents. Sam Isaac, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

One night the night before Christmas Eve, I saw a light, a little light zooming from the sky. It went down my chimney, rolled into the living room and knocked down three presents under the tree. It woke up the whole family. It was a snowball. It broke and inside was a snow globe. I shook it and I was myself standing inside. Next thing you know, I see a reindeer out the window. There was a note in his little bag. I read it and it said, “Get on, I need to take you somewhere special, by Santa.” At first, I hesitated then got on. I was in the air one second after I got on. After a few minutes, I was freezing. I realized that I was only in my pajamas. I thought I was at the North Pole, but I couldn’t be not in a million years. Then I saw one million little people and it was getting really cold and creepy. I came to a palace and saw Santa. He walked past me and his fluffy beard made my face warm and smell like cookies and milk. He said I had a mission to take Mrs. Claus’ ring so Santa could put a diamond in it for her special Christmas present. I jumped through the office window, tripped over a present and fell on my backside. I felt something moving. I was sitting on a rolling car and hit her chair where she was fast asleep. Whew! Luckily I didn’t

wake her. I rushed to the jewelry elves to accomplish this special mission for Santa and when they were finished with his surprise gift I ran back so he could put her gift under the tree. What a special night for me becoming an elf for Santa! When I woke up the next

Making more Christmas memories to write about next year. Eating up all of the milk and cookies before Santa gets there. Making good grades so my parents buy me great Christmas presents. Outsinging my brother and sister (maybe just maybe my Mom) during church. Reading Christmas book to everyone, all of them are my favorites. I love Christmas because it’s Jesus’ birthday. Earning my favorite cookies and presents because I’ve done extra chores. Singing joyful carols with the best and only family I have!

My name is Hope, and I have a lot of Christmas memories that are good. My most favorite memories have my Grandma Mabel in all of them. When I was little, she dressed me up as Mrs. Claus! We would always eat a large dinner and sing Christmas songs. When it got time to open presents, we all had to look for the Christmas pickle that was hidden in the tree. The first person to find it got to open their gifts first. That was always really fun. After everyone had opened all their presents we would pray for a really long time. I don’t dress up like Mrs. Claus anymore, but last year we dressed up my Mema’s dog like Santa’s wife. She didn’t like it though. Last year I wore a pretty red dress. This was all before Grandma Mabel died. She would get perfume and lotion that was real strong and lots of other presents. She loved them all and always had fun at Christmas. It makes me sad because she loved Christmas so much, and I miss her so much. Hope Lowery, 11

It was Christmas of 2013. I was sound asleep, but woke up suddenly because I felt something warm on my back. I tuned over and there was nothing and no one there. It felt like a hand touched me. I tried to go back to sleep, but I felt it again. I looked around into the darkness, but there was still nothing there. I looked over the side of the bed. Nothing! As I drifted back to sleep, I felt it again. I sat up in my bed and looked again, nothing. I got so tired looking around and thinking about what that feeling could be that I went back to sleep. To this day, I believe it was Santa! Sam Turbeville, 9 Crystal Gore’s Fourth Grade Edgewood Elementary

Evie’s Elf on the Shelf In the year 2013, I first got my Elf on the Shelf. My brother and I have loved the thought of having on of Santa’s Elves there to watch over us and always enjoy waking up and looking for our elf. We might be said when he leaves each year, but that just makes us more excited when he comes back. He comes from the North Pole, Dressed in red and white. Hot chocolate

We have so much to be thankful for this Christmas. I’m most thankful for my Aunt A coming down this Christmas. I am thankful for her to come down because she lives so far away. I really do miss her. I’m thankful for her to come down because every year she brings the best presents ever! Thomasville must have a good toy store. I’m very thankful for her to come home because she is a police officer. I want to know if she is alright and I’m worried about her. That’s why I’m thankful for her to come down.

We have so much to be thankful for. This season I am the most thankful for hot chocolate. I am thankful for hot chocolate because it’s warm, it’s good with marshmallows, and it’s easy to make. It’s warm because when your cold just drink it and you’re warm. It’s good with marshmallows because they give the hot chocolate flavor. It’s easy to make because you only have to put in a pot and then put milk with it. Jamin Hernandez Brittany Ward’s Third Grade Old Dock Elementary

My favorite Christmas When I think about Christmas, I think about my favorite Christmas long ago. It was when I was only six years old! Four years ago! My papa Dub cooked and it was so good! The sweet potatoes were my favorite! Santa brought gifts to all the good children and the bad ones got coal in their stockings! I got a tea cup set. My brother and I got hot cocoa and drank it like princesses! It was so funny! What I also like so much about every Christmas is that is when Jesus was born.

My mom had the table ready with good food and my sister came with the drinks to be poured when we heard the first knock on our door. It was my cousin, Fernanda! She was coming to help us set the tables and brought the ice. A few minutes later, my Uncle Eliad and Aunt Laura were building a fire in the fireplace and tying up balloons. My fondest Christmas My fondest Christmas memory is when I go to my Grandma’s house and we make up jokes! Usually my Grandpa is there too, but he won’t be there this year because he passed away in the spring. This Christmas won’t be as fun since he is not there and sometimes I forget and think he is with us. The most important thing is that my Grandpa is in my heart and that is what really matters.

Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. You’ve done so much. Some kids don’t get presents like I do. You need to help them and give them presents so they can have the chance to get stuff for a change. Some kids are sick and need medicine. I have everything I want. I don’t care about presents. The only thing I need is food and shelter, and I have that. As long as I have my family by my side I’m good. This year please help other kids have a chance to get presents and have fun. The best Christmas Two years ago it was the best Christmas ever! When I was 7 years old we had a white tree. In the first grade I made a gingerbread man, but it was shaped as a heart. Me and my mom put it on the tree when we were done. Then we put glowing candy canes outside. On Christmas, my brother got a Dsi and I said I wanted one, but I got a pack of Nerds in my stocking. I wasn’t mad. My brothers kept eating them. I hid them. My brothers said I could play their Dsi. When my Nerds were gone my brothers said I couldn’t play their Dsi. I was furious! After we made hot chocolate we ate breakfast. My brother and sister wanted to open their presents so my mom and dad let us. My sister got a pony, lip gloss, hair dye, and a new bike. My brother got a dart gun, some Legos, and three big army men. I got a lot of makeup, some hair dye, and a new scooter. That is my favorite Christmas memory. My winter memory One winter mor ning I looked outside and there were icicles on my window and then I looked out of my mother’s window. Then I went outside and I broke off the icicles. Then I looked up and there were icicles in the trees. Then I threw a rock at them. They came down and broke. I looked around and icicles were all around me. So I went to my room and I got a baseball and threw it at all of them.

My Christmas memory My f avorite Christmas memory is leaving Rudolph spare noses. We leave them on the front porch, in case his red fake nose comes off. Then he would have ten more. I do this because I have a movie about Rudolph. His red nose makes the weirdest noise. It is a really funny noise also.

We look forward to serving you in 2016.

One of the things that I like about Christmas is the food and seeing my family and getting to talk to them and I can catch up on if I have not been seeing them, and I love the Christmas lights and I love to decorate my house for Christmas. That is one the thing I love about Christmas.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” —Isaiah 9:6

It was Christmas Eve. We were all asleep. We all then woke up to a big bang. It came from my living room. We all ran to see what the noise was but there was nothing but our Christmas tree tipped over. But we did not see anyone any were and the cookies and milk we put out earlier was all gone. So this is why I think Santa is real. Riley, 11 Carol Swain’s Sixth Grade Evergreen Elementary

Christmas memory

Olaf ’s waffles

Disney

My favorite Christmas memory was two years ago. On Christmas Eve, we were eating at my aunts. My cousins and I shot rockets into the sky. On Christmas morning, I went into the garage and saw a four wheeler. This was one of my favorite Christmas memories.

My best Christmas memory was when I received an Olaf waffle maker. Rock on St. Jude.

On Christmas we went to Disney and we played fun games. The next Sunday we got back and we opened presents. We had a party because it was Christmas and we had fun. We played, we ate Chinese food, and then we went shopping. We went back to our house and the next day we gave our presents to our family. We buy things and then we got happy. We ate at Golden Corral. And we got back to our house and me and my cousins play. And on Christmas I got a tablet.

My favorite Christmas memory happened about a year ago. I was waiting to open presents when I looked up and saw my aunt who I had not seen in a long time. She got me the best present that I had ever had, it was a big bag of tools. I had been wanting a tool set for a long time. After we opened presents we went to look at Christmas lights. That was a fun Christmas!

The night before Christmas, I went to my sister’s house. She lives in a big house in Wilson, North Carolina. When I got there, she had a whole bunch of presents under the tree. We got there late, and we had cookies and milk. When it was midnight, we started unwrapping our presents. I open forty presents. My favorite present was my golf ball game. I can connect it to my TV and I played it until it was time for me to go to bed. Another present I liked a lot was my bicycle. It is blue and red. My niece, Melvalisa, and I went to bed at the same time. When I woke up the next morning, I hung on a towel bar in the bathroom and broke it. Christmas traditions

Hello there! My family and I love Christmas! If you go to my house right now all you will see is Christmas trees! Last Christmas we had a big feast at my grandma’s house. We had BBQ ribs and opened presents from uncles, aunts, gramma’s and papas. The presents were cool! Santa came and we were ready! On Christmas I like to sit by the fire and drink coffee. All that is good but Christmas needs to be about Jesus. Most people think Christmas is just about the gifts and Santa coming but I think spending Christmas talking about Jesus is the best thing you could do to celebrate Christmas. Christmas is an important holiday so spend Christmas wisely!

My Christmas memory

It was a beautiful, snowy evening in New York City and it was one of the most exciting days of the year – Christmas Eve! Five-year-old twins, Emily and Tom, were running around their parents, Jan and Walter’s annual Christmas Eve party making as much mischief as possible. Then Tom said excitedly, “Look Emily! Look! Look!” It was a cake at least three feet tall being carried in by their chef and maids, Grace and Arlene. “Yay, it is finally here! It has three layers of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate! With vanilla icing and so many sprinkles you can barely see any vanilla!” gasped excited Emily. “I am so happy! Chef Douglas makes the best cakes in the world!” said Tom. “When I got back from the hospital this June, my cake was as tall as me!” “Let’s dig in!” screamed Emily and the two ran to the cake as fast as they could and then their dad, Walter, caught sight of them. He came over and said, “Slow down you two. You know there is no running inside, or at the party.” “We’re sorry” whispered the twins. “OK,” said their dad as he gave them the “thumbs up” sign and walked away. The twins walked over to the cake and stared at it to see where to dig in. “I want the chocolate!” said Tom as he hopped on the table. “No, I want the chocolate, Tom” said Emily jumping on the opposite side Tom was on. “No, me!” said Tom. “No, me!” said Emily. The twins argued and were tugging on the cake until eventually it said … “PLOP.” The cake had fallen. It was on the floor. Worst of all, Emily and Tom caused the incident. Their parents came over, fiery mad, with Chef Douglas behind them. “What have you done?” said their mom, Jan. Chef Douglas said “The ingredients are rare …” He fell right in front of them. There was a loud and sudden gasp from the ballroom. A friend of their mom’s said in a grumpy and annoying voice, “Excuse me, excuse me, I am a nurse.” She hummed and then said “Get him to the hospital! He has fainted! Get him to the hospital, quick!” Another gasp came quickly from the ballroom. Their dad walked over and said “Room. NOW.” He was angry. The twins walked

sadly to their room. About an hour later, Tom and the family’s dog barged in Emily’s room while she was playing with her dolls, Virginia and Genie. He said “Want to go to the North Pole? Mommy and Daddy drove Mommy’s car to the hospital.” “Oh yes! Just let me pack a bag.” said Emily excitedly. Emily put her dolls, Virginia and Genie, an extra pair of clothes, candy she had hidden under her pillow for emergencies, and a coat in a bag. Rushing her, Tom groaned and said “Hurry up! Jimmy and I are waiting” while grabbing Emily’s hand. “ G E T YO U R H A N D S OFF ME THIS MINUTE!” screamed Emily while prying Tom’s hand off her arm. Tom pouted, crossed his arms. “I will be waiting for you in the hallway” he said walking away. A minute later, Emily came in the hallway and said “Go! Get moving Tom, I want to go to the North Pole!” “Race you there,” said Tom who yelled because he was already halfway down the hall. “WAIT TOM!” screamed Emily. Tom groaned in disgust and fell down and Emily caught up. “Let’s ... not ... .race ...” said Emily tiredly. They finally reached the door a minute or two later and Jimmy started barking like crazy. “What are you barking at Jimmy”? exclaimed Tom. “Wow! Look Tom! Look!” said Emily excitedly. T here were two elves about the size of the twin’s arms. One was green and the other was red To m g a s p e d a n d s a i d “Wow! Are you going to the North Pole?” “N-n-n-no” said the elf in green. “I’m Emily and this is my twin brother, Tom.” said Emily. “We are going to the North Pole.” “What are your names?” asked Tom. The elf in red said “Sorry, she is shy. I am Cocoa and she is Holly. I would take you to the North Pole, but …” The elf in green, who was apparently Holly, elbowed Cocoa and the signaled the one-minute sign and walked away a few feet with Cocoa. “Sorry. I had to talk to him. We have been fired temporarily from Santa’s Workshop for jamming a toy maker,” said Holly. “But we do know all the shortcuts to get to the North Pole and into Santa’s Work-

shop. So we can take you. If it is OK,” said Cocoa. “It is alright with our parents. They said we can go anywhere we want.” lied Tom. “OK then! Just lick this candy cane and you will be in Santa’s front yard,” said Holly. All of them licked (and the twins ate) the candy cane. A second later, they were in Santa’s front yard. Cocoa mouthed, “Be quiet,” and tiptoed to the back. Holly, Tom and Emily were right behind him. Holly pulled out four tiny trains that had levers to take them inside. “Pull the lever!” said Holly quietly. Cocoa and Holly pulled the levers and were already inside, but Tom and Emily didn’t pull the levers. They saw Santa about to take off to deliver presents. So, Tom and Mary snuck off and jumped in Santa’s sleigh. Santa finally noticed they were there about a quarter of a mile from where they took off. “Ho, ho, ho, Tom and Mary! What are you two doing in my sleigh?” said Santa in his usually jolly tone. The twins did not respond. They were fast asleep. “Ho ho ho! You are asleep.” said Santa. He wrote on his notepad and got two jingle bells from sleigh. The next thing Emily and Tom noticedn they were lying on their couch with presents, two jingle bells and a note under the tree. “Mommy, Mommy!” said Emily. “Daddy, Daddy!” said Tom. Their parents came as soon as possible. “Read this,” said Emily. The note read: “Dear Emily and Tom, Last night, I found you asleep in my sleigh. I am not mad. I dropped you two off first. I left you two jingle bells from my sleigh. I hope you like all your presents. Love, Santa Claus” “Thank you Santa!” said Emily and Tom. My Christmas memory My best Christmas memory is when Santa brought me a trampoline! I woke up one Christmas morning, there was a big box, by the Christmas tree, and it was heavy! As soon as I saw it I opened it as quick as I could! Then I saw a trampoline. There was a green board around it. T hen when I jumped on it, I sprung into the air! Then I hopped down, and noticed the silver legs that held it down. I was really, really happy I received a trampoline because I been wanting one forever. Then I realized that there was a black circle in the middle of the trampoline that made it really bouncy. It wouldn’t come off unless you peeled it off. Oh boy it got better every time. So that is my Christmas memory. Olivia Peterson, 10 Karina Ulfsax’s 4th grade Acme-Delco Elementary

Christmas memories

Christmas is such a fun holiday! On Christmas my family and I get together and have a feast! Every Christmas Santa brings every good child a present. I love to go and see Santa at Bass Pro Shop and tell him Cory Boone, 4 what I want for Christmas. Susan Smith’s Pre-Kindergarten My mom and I decorate before Old Dock Elementary Christmas day. I guess the gobbles were contagious that everyone began fighting for the box. In the end, though, I got the precious box only to find that it was just a big soda bottle full of Mountain Dew. Lucky me! Everyone went back to their homes after the gobbling contest was over and slept soundly waiting for Santa to come with the real presents.

A gobbly-good Christmas

On the Christmas of 2013, my whole family came together to celebrate at my grandma’s house. First the grown ups helped my grandma finish cooking and while they did that the old kid in the family had the job of telling Christmas stories to the younger kids. The other teenagers went inside the guest room and played the xBox. When all the food was ready, the whole family sat down, prayed together and stuffed themselves with what looked like a buffet at Golden Corral. Then it was time for the fun to begin. Pushing the tables together into a long skinny line, we piled it with our gifts for the family gift exchange. This happened by rolling dice and picking a gift according to where the dice lands. If a person rolls doubles, we get to steal a gift from someone. The catch is that the gifts are wrapped and you cannot see what treats or duds are in the boxes. When there are no more gifts you can start taking them from each other. The game is over when the gifts are exchanged

Special mission On Dec. 25, I woke up with my family found out that my dad was gone on a special mission to get a special present for us. My brother, Jayden, and I tried to make our best guesses, but we never guessed a PUPPY! We held him and tried to comfort him, but he did not feel well. We thought maybe he was nervous so we let him walk around and he pooped in our house. My mom was not happy. So we picked him up and took him to our outside building to stay. It was time to go to our Papa and Nanny’s house. My aunt, uncle and cousins were there. We ate breakfast, opened our presents and read the Christmas story from the Bible scriptures. Our family played outside and had so much fun, but when it was time to go back home we got excited because we knew our puppy was waiting on us at home. I went outside to check on the puppy and play with him, but he was very sick. My dad and I gave him some medicine because he was throwing up. I held him to let him know that he was going to be okay while my Papa and I prayed for him. We took him back where his mom was that day because my dad thought maybe he needed his mom for a little longer. A few weeks later we got a call that said our Christmas puppy didn’t survive. We were all very sad, but realized it was for the best if he was sick. Jonathan Todd, 10 Crystal Gore’s Fourth Grade Edgewood Elementary

God and Jesus

Family helps me

I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful for God and Jesus because he loves me. He takes care of me. He put a roof over my head. I know Jesus loves me because he put a heart in my body. He put a roof over my head. He put food in my body. I know he takes care of me because he gave me a mama. He gave me daddy. He gave me sisters and a brother. I know Jesus put a roof over my head because I didn’t get wet, I didn’t feel lightning and I don’t get too hot.

We have so much to be thankful for this Christmas. I am the most thankful for my family because they help me when I’m sad. They are always there for me, they take care of me. When I am sad they always ask me what is wrong. They always say something to make me feel better. They always try to solve it. If I get hurt they always are there helping me. If someone is mean to me they are always there to stop it. If I don’t think my scores are good at gymnastics they always make me feel better. They always take care of me. I f I am hungry they always feed me. If I want to play a game they play it with me. They help me get ready for school.

Horsin’ around at Christmas

A new Christmas awareness

My favorite Christmas memory is the time I got a new horse! I knew he was going to be my best friend so I named him Bud. Bud is really smart so I taught him to go in the trailer when I said, “Load.” My horse is also really fast, and can make sharp turns. I have trained him to be a barrel racer and we enter competitions. Bud and I are still racing and winning ribbons, not just any ribbon, but 1st place! I am so happy that I got Bud that Christmas!

Last year was a really fun Christmas. I got so many toys, shoes, clothes, and other gifts. That was fun, but the best memory I have is that this was the last Christmas that I got to spend with my grandma that died of cancer. This Christmas, I want to think about others and make it really special for them. I don’t have my grandma here with me anymore, and lots of family members have been to the hospital this year. I also have a newborn cousin named Kody, and I want to help him and my family and people that have had cancer before or have it now. I know how bad this disease is because I saw it with my grandma. When I decorated my tree, I put pink cancer awareness signs all on it, to honor anyone that has had a family member suffer from cancer. Christina Williams, 11

Christmas ‘Hope’ My name is Hope, and I have a lot of Christmas memories that are good.

Dear Sandy Claws, You should NOT come this year because you could give toys to people that aren`t as blessed as me and others. Also, you shouldn`t come because you could make lots of shoeboxes with toys. On the topic of shoeboxes, people shouldn’t only put toys in shoeboxes. They should also put in utensils, socks, shoes, etc. in them. What have you been thinking? You have magical elves that can make things. I mean you could tell them to make food and end world hunger, but NOOOOOO you`re going to tell them to make toys so you can be a holiday icon. Also, how can you deal with being so unhealthy by eating billions of cookies each night. Just imagine how much healthier you would be by not coming. By the way though, you should get the elves to hook you up with some exercise equipment and possibly a Weight Watchers account. Sincerely, Seth Enzor Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary P. S. Reminder - the elves could probably make houses and clean water in Africa and Thailand. Also, they could probably make a cure to cancer. Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year to bring us to toys. Take food and toys to the children that don’t have anything. They need homes and need help growing crops. Seriously, they need clothes. We need to give them food. We need to build them schools. From, Seth Pierce Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. Can you help my bunnies to keep from getting ear mites? I’ve already watched one die, and now I don’t want to watch four more. I don’t want it to spread to my other bunnies. Just help my bunnies. It is all I want. Also, can you help the grass grow for them to eat? Sincerely, Victoria Perdue Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary

Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year because there are less fortunate people than me. I want you to give all of my toys to the kids in Africa. Many of them don’t have anything. Then give some toys to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Those children are sick and Stephanie Hammond’s 5th Grade toys from you will make them Cerro Gordo Elementary feel better. After that, give some toys to an orphanage. They don’t have a lot of toys or anything to do. I want you to donate those toys to kids who don’t have a lot. My favorite Christmas My favorite Christmas memory. I had just had woke up. It wasn’t snowing, but that didn’t bother me. I walked down the ladder of my bunk-bed that I and my little sister, Bethany, share together. The first thing I did after I got down was giving thanks to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I couldn’t help but to ignore my sister’s loud snoring. So I raced to the living room to try to get at least a fraction of her loud snoring out of my head. After that I had seen that my dad had already woken up. I just adored the Christmas tree sitting right beside the couch. He handed me a lot of $$$! That great feeling just made me hungry. So I went to the kitchen and right before my eye’s lay a table of breakfast, already made! I just wanted to do my victory dance, but I also wanted to not make myself look bad. So I just did it in my head. I ate with the family (including Bethany after she woke up). Then we all went and tore up the gifts. I just couldn’t help but to squeal out loud. I got EVERYTHING I wished for! After that we all drank hot chocolate. Gabrielle, 8 Linda Parker’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

It’s Christmas! Christmas is very exciting for me and my family. We all have a small Christmas tree according to the color of our room. We have plenty of traditions such as sleeping in our parents’ room on Christmas Eve, going to our nana’s house and eating a breakfast feast! The trees, the lights, the wreaths make me so cheerful! DEAR SANTA

Christmas Poem

One day a man named Eli was cutting down a tree. A wise man named James came and said, “What are you doing in this cold weather, you`re supposed to be with your family?” “My family stay`s in Idaho,” he said. James said, “You seem like a smart guy, I’m going to buy you a plane ticket to see your family.” A year later Eli got married and had three kids. The last boy was named Santa. He was a kind young man. He was a giving and not receiving kind of guy. When Santa was older, he moved away and started giving away presents, he named it Christmas after baby Jesus. Then he moved to a place called The North Pole. He made a sled and found nine reindeer and they drove his sled because he was tired of walking. He hired elves and they helped him make toys and clean up around The North Pole. Now, he goes around every neighborhood and gives away toys to kids around the world.

My Christmas You know Christmas isn’t just about getting presents. In fact, it isn’t about that at all. I think Christmas is about celebrating Jesus. I know when I get presents I should remember that’s not what Christmas is all about. My cousins do a good thing. Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. There are more people that need things in the world. Like in India, they need food, clothes, medicine and water. I don’t need any more toys. Some people need help and supplies. Some people don’t think about the poor and they just get more things to take up space. I want you to help others this Christmas because I really care about the poor and sick. You can do this by changing your route and telling the reindeer to go to India. When you get there you can pass out the supplies and cure people. Also, you can go around and help out the people and children and make them happy. That is how you can make everyone happy on Christmas day. Love always, Lyla Autumn Bullard Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary

Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. You always bring us good presents, but some kids have no homes, food, or are sick. I want you too, but instead help kids in need. Think about kids in need not kids that want everything. Santa, I don’t want presents for myself. I want you to give present to poor kids and old people. Also Santa, try to help the animals. Santa, please help these people in need. It is not their fault they have no one to help them. Sincerely, Ryan Strickland Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. I don’t want you to come because I have a lot of toys and some kids don’t. They need some toys too. They need better shelter to survive. If they don’t have it they will die. Please help the people who are sick and weak. Help the people in rest homes too. Thank you! Yours truly, Jayliene Franklin Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary P.S. Can my elves please stay longer this year?

Dear Santa, I don’t want you to come because you wear red and white clothes all the time. I don’t like how your beard hangs so low, and I don’t like that your boots are so big and heavy. Also, you never come and give us our presents in front of us. You are all about reindeer. Another problem I have with you is that you do not eat our milk and cookies we make you. You are not like in the movies. You never give me what I want. How do you fit in the chimney? And how does Rudolph’s nose glow? How do your reindeer fly high in the air like an airplane? I don’t like your elves’ ears. They are too big and pointy. I don’t like even like the bells on your sleigh. Sincerely, Christian Nobles Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary

Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year because people need food and water. That’s why I don’t want you to come this year. Give me the gifts that you would have brought and I will take them to the people’s houses. You can take the food and water to the children. I’m sure they will be happy to have food and water. Then you can plant crops for them and that is how you can give them the food. It will be easy to get the water just get it from the sink. Sincerely, Kainan Floyd Mary Waddell’s 4th Grade Cerro Gordo Elementary Dear Santa, Please don’t come this year. Go help other children that don’t have food, clothes, schools, or homes. They really need this stuff, so please don’t come. Instead, just go and teach little kids how to read, write, and count. Give people food and a way better life that don’t have doctors when they are sick. Give people hope that they’ll have good health and especially water that they need to survive. Please visit other people. Give them books to learn. If people are sick, use magic to make them well. They need houses. Teach them how to build houses. They way that I live is how other people should live with food, clothes, and homes. Please visit other people instead of me this Christmas. My favorite Christmas My favorite Christmas memory is last Christmas. It`s last Christmas because I got a lot of presents. One of the presents I got was a doll house for dolls called American girl dolls. I also got American girl doll clothes. I got board games and stuff to go in my doll house too. I got some Barbie stuff and some very cute clothes. I opened all of those presents at my house. Second, I went over to my Nana and Papa`s house. There I got an American girl doll named Isabell. Isabell was a good gift because my cousin Lauren and I both got her and got to take pictures with our dolls together. I also got a cute top with a dog and some jeans to go with my top. Third, I went to my Meme and Papa`s house. There I got a karaoke machine and a T.V. with a DVD player. I also got some cute clothes. THAT`S MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MEMORY.

Dear Santa, Do not bring me a present for Christmas becomes I have dog presents, horse presents, and cat presents. I even have dolls. I do not want anything for Christmas. I am sorry I am not asking you to come. I do not mean to hurt you Santa. There are other kids in need, so I do not want anything for Christmas. Please do not bring me a present this year. Memories of Christmas too many to recall coming to Whiteville remembering them all You don’t have to travel far to have a white Christmas here The name says it all Here in “the Ville” The people, places and beauty Sparkle and shine Like the candles glowing on Madison Street or Wyche And let’s not forget the flavors Of our Ed’s Grill Or the hot clam chowder Dale’s serves all year We have our own Madison Square Garden New York’s doesn’t compare The Madison House B&B Has beauty and flare. Listen to the church bells ringing Through the lofty pines Follow the angelic anthems First Baptist chimes. And if you need some bling To add in your life Meander down to Collier’s diamonds that gleam in the light. Where else can one go To find a Mrs. Bright’s? Just drop in to the local gas station And savor pure delight. Celebrate Hanukah All the year through There was Leder’s and J.S. Manns and Moskows Just to name a few. Feel the love of Christmas Anywhere you go The locals call you “baby” At the barbecue called “Joe’s” There is not a Kroger or Harris Teeter You will find But only Hill’s groceries Where there may be a long line. Don’t forget to wear your seatbelt Whiteville travels the 701 Folks like to hurry For those What-A-Burger fries. Yuletides of a white Christmas Echo in my ears I’ll always have a white Christmas Here in Whiteville.

The night before It was the night before Christmas. All the families are getting ready for tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning will be when the kids get up from bed and see that Santa came to their house. They will see that Santa ate their cookies and drank their milk. The kids will eat breakfast later. The kids will open presents and say WOW! Brayden Suggs Angela Duncan’s Second Grade Chadbourn Elementary

My Christmas thoughts When I think about Christmas I think about snow, hot chocolate, and presents. What we should really think about is how God sent His only son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. At church I sing songs about Him and we do Christmas plays. They are fun! I feel like Christmas is a time to get together with family. Sometimes my friends come over on Christmas Eve and open presents. On Christmas day we get three presents just like Jesus got three presents from the Wise Men. All through the day there is joy in the air! I love Christmas! Emily Worley, 10 Julia Hardwick’s 4th grade Williams Township

By JEFF GRAHAM Bolton Every Christmas my two children and grandchildren, always spend Christmas Eve night at home with us. The children are so happy opening their gifts on Christmas morning. My mind always goes back to the Christmas when I was seven years old, there were five girls and three boys and we had very little. My mother did domestic work in the area and she would save as much as she could for us until Christmas. Together we had saved around $40 or $50 and on Christmas Eve morning she gave the money to my father and he left to go to Wilmington to see Santa for us kids. We all went to bed at first dark, waiting for Santa to come. We started peeping out around 4 a.m. to see if Santa had come. But mother would send us back to bed. The shoeboxes with all our name’s written on them was still empty at daylight Christmas morning. We knew that something was wrong. We didn’t have a couch,

so mother took all of the small children in her bedroom and sat us beside her on the bed and tried to explain to us and comfort us. Then all of us were crying, and what really hurt was when mother started crying along with us. The next sad time was about one hour later, when our friends and neighbor’s came by with their bright shinning bicycles and toys. And we didn’t even have an apple or orange, no candy. My father didn’t return home until some time during eh night of Dec. 26 empty handed. It has been more than 60 years ago, but I will never forget that Christmas morning. That is why my wife and I have always adopted a needy family in our community at Christmas time. As I grew older and realized the true reason that we celebrate Christmas day I felt a lot better. So I encourage all young parents to teach their children the true reason for the season may God bless every child everywhere and keep them safe.

Christmas Day

Last Christmas

It was a cold winter Christmas day. It was snowing. My cousin Jayzeon and I were playing outside. We were playing football. I tackled him in a tree. He got mad and punch me in the face. Then we played basketball he gave me 19 he had 0. We were going to 20 He won. We played with the dog. He is a pit bull. Then we had a snow ball fight.

I woke up and my sister said, “I heard Santa stomping in the living room.” So I went and got mom up. We went to open my presents. I got a doll house and got some monster high dolls. I felt glad because I got some big things for Christmas. Zoe Martin, 8 Mr. Goodwin’s Third Grade Acme Delco Elementary

My brother, sister and me in the snow

Christmas Joy

Last year in the afternoon I and my brother and sister where going outside. Next my sister had to get her gloves. We just left her inside. Then she came outside. I was trying to do an angel on the snow. So me my brother and my sister were going to do a snowman. But we could not because the ball on the other ball. We destroy the ball so next we went to stand by the fire. THE END

One Christmas night my uncle and my nana did not stay with me. Every year they did but she did not now because she was having a baby soon. The family woke up very early Christmas morning Nana was dancing and singing it was funny. A few months later the baby was here he was so cute my Nana was very happy everyone was happy and they named him James Scott Rose. He is 4 months old we all love him. My winter memory

On winter day I gone out side with my dad and there was ice on my dad’s truck so I helped him scrape it off then I played with my sister in the I woke upon the wonderful snow and we made snow. Then smell of pancakes. The smell I helped my mom make snow filled my nose. I rushed down cones then I road my sled all the stairs and in the dining around my house and I had a room and stuffed the pancakes happy winter. down my mouth. I rushed outside it was cold so I grabbed Kolton Pridgen, 8 my coat and I put it on and Mr. Goodwin’s Third Grade ran outside and as soon as I Acme Delco Elementary got outside my face was red as a beet and my hands felt like a sponge. The snow was as hard as rock. Dad pulled the sled out and attached it to his 4-wheeler and drove around so I flew off the sled and cracked the snow. And slipped to the front yards stairs and made a loud bump and I got back on the sled.

The Trip We went to D.C for Christmas. It was cold outside. It was dark that Bolton night. Snowing with a quite wind we were about to leave, on Christmas Eve. I had said “IT’S SNOWING NOW LET’S GO.” Running outside we packed in the car. We drove and finally arrived. We went to sleep. Now it’s Christmas Day. The girl who saved Christmas

My Christmas memories

Once upon a time lived a girl who truly believed in Santa. Her name was Penny and in her time the little boys and girls didn`t believe in Santa. She had mailed her letter to Santa. Penny was in her bed on Christmas Eve, it was midnight and she heard noises on the roof, “SANTA” she yelled. “Shhhh, I don`t want to wake your parents. I need you to help me with something. I need you to help spread Christmas cheer because nobody believes in me and if nobody believes in me, I`ll be out of a job”. “You want me to help you, sure lets go” said Penny. Soon the whole world believed in Santa, all because of Penny.

On Christmas morning I woke up and there were so many gifts under the Christmas tree. I had 20 presents. It was such a good Christmas. I got a phone, three pairs of shoes, three shirts, four pairs of pants, two north face jackets, two packs of socks, two packs of t shirts, and a pencil pouch. I had a big dinner. We had cookies and pie. The food was great. The food was so good, when I was done I felt like a new person.

A Christmas Poem

Christmas Joy

Christmas Night

One snowy Christmas night, There lays a chimney, Where there’s a great fire! It goes out for Santa, T o come down the chimney, And give us the presents, He made for us and in return He gets milk and cookies! Happy Holidays Everyone

On the day before Christmas All through the town Last minute shoppers were running around. Everyone spreading joy. But Mr. Jones wanted more, he wanted people to buy from his store. He didn’t like Christmas at all, He didn’t have a tree that was three feet tall. He only wanted people to come to his store, And buy more and more! But some kids came to town And they spread Christmas cheer all around. Mr. Jones has loved the season since then. He started to celebrate Christmas again. After those sweet girls and boys Came and spread Christmas joy!

Outside the wind is blowing, And the snow is snowing. Inside the fire is blazing, And the tree is so amazing! The stockings are hung. The food is all done. The gifts are under the tree, And we are all ready to sleep! Alexandria Benton, 10 Cara Smeigh’s 5th Grade Class Columbus Charter School

Kasey Kinlaw, 10 Dawn Ivey’s Fifth Grade Class Columbus Charter School

Christmas Eve Before the night cookies we set, Has Santa come, not yet! Waiting with eyes wide open, Hopefully your spirit is not broken. “Pitter, patter” you hear on the roof, Hoping it’s that jolly old goof. You come down stairs the next morning, With sensation, your heart a growing. “Santa came!” you say in glee! Just get ready for that big Christmas feast.

Mackenzie Singletary, 10 Dawn Ivey’s Fifth Grade Class Columbus Charter School

Christmas Christmas is coming. It’s almost here. Stockings are hung. Snow is falling, Covering the ground like cotton. Sleigh bells ring. Santa is almost here. Put up the tree for presents because, Santa is coming! John Paul Blackwell, 10 Cara Smeigh’s 5th Grade Class Columbus Charter School

Amy and Justin Once upon a time, in a far off land called North Face there was a mother named Amy and a father named Justin. Amy was going to have a baby, his name would be Santa. He was born on Christmas Eve. Sixteen years later on Santa`s birthday (Christmas) Santa decided that he wanted to give thanks to God and people. Later that day his mom sewed him an outfit to wear while he gave people presents and thanked God. He had to go to the store and buy enough presents for boys, girls, moms, and dads all over North Face. He had to hire 5 assistants. The assistants would go to every house in North Face. Then he built a sled with the help of the 5 assistants. He named the assistants Elf`s because all of the assistants that Santa hired had long stretched pointy ears. Santa then got 9 reindeer to push the sled because Santa did not want the kids to see him pushing the sled. Over the years Santa`s success became wonderful and all the kids believed in Santa and his elf`s. Merry Christmas! Jayla Serret , 9 Dana Scott’s 4th Grade Acme Delco Elementary
