Gators set to rebuild under Lewis

Just a handful of regulars return for the East Columbus High School varsity football team this season, but new head coach Rocky Lewis plans on trying to make the best with what is available. Both the 2012 and 2013 Gator squads had solid senior leadership as they posted season records of 9-5 and 5-8. Lewis became the third Gator head coach in as many seasons earlier this summer, and he knows he has a challenge in rebuilding the Gator squad in his first head coaching assignment. Lewis is the son of longtime eastern North Carolina high school coaching standout Bob Lewis and played quarterback for

Kysheim Robinson

his father’s Clinton High teams in the early 1990s. He went on to East Carolina University and became an assistant coach for several college teams, including Appalachian State and North Carolina A&T. He then went into the

business world in Wilmington for several years before deciding to get back into coaching. He replaces Chris Haney who resigned to become an assistant at Wilmington’s Ashley High. Haney replaced Toby Kasell, who

was Gator head coach for three years before heading to an assistant’s position at North Brunswick. Punishing running back Nick McClure and fellow seniors Elijah Gresham, Greg Melvin, Jalen Dumas, Ryan Howard and Carlos

Campbell wound up their Gator football careers last season after starting for three years. While there is not a lot of varsity experience returning, Lewis said that his team is eager to take on the new season. “We stress hard work and dedication, and getting things done the right way,” he said. “We’ve got some tough teams on our schedule, but as long as we show improvement as a team each time out, we’ll be okay.” Senior Kysheim Robinson and junior T.J. Brown lead the list of returnees. “We’d like to have more kids out now,” he said, “but the ones we have out now are eager and working hard.”

Down Home, Down The Street Our team has built our reputation on quality meats, fresh produce, competitive grocery prices, and being good neighbors in our communities. We recognize the hard work that goes into making a winning team and we salute all the players, coaches, bands, cheerleaders, and fans who make Columbus County football so much fun to experience.

Good Luck to the East Columbus Gators and to all the student athletes of Columbus County! Riegelwood Shopping Center

Stallions have new coach, same goals Few high school football teams in Southeastern North Carolina can match the overall consistency of the South Columbus Stallions since the school opened in 1992. Over the past two decades, the Stallions have won 17 county championships, 14 conference championships and have appeared in the Eastern N.C. 2A Regional finals five times, winning the East title in 2007 and finishing runner-up in the state. They have qualified for the state playoffs 20 times and a Stallion player has been selected Columbus County Player of the Year 17 times. And even though the Stallions have suffered heavy graduation losses in each of the past two seasons, there is no reason to think that the 2014 Stallion football season will be any different. The Stallions are under the tutelage of a new head coach.

Reid Worley

Kyle Hutchison was hired to fill the vacancy left by Jake Fonvielle, who resigned last winter to become fully involved in his family’s longtime Tabor City business. Fonvielle guided the Stallions to conference championships in four of his five years at the helm. His 2011 and 2012

The Stallions return with the experience and leadership of senior players Reid Worley and Rashad Chatman. Both have earned all-conference and all-county honors in each of the past two seasons. Chatman provides strength and speed as a running back and linebacker, and Worley is a strong, durable player as a linebacker-tight end. Matt Miller heads into his junior season after gaining a lot of experience in the line Rashad Chatman last fall. The Stallions suffered a tragic loss when promising young running back Cephas McGill died after suffering a stroke while visiting Myrtle Beach during Easter break. McGill had several strong efforts as a sophomore last spring. Hutchison heads into his tenure at South Columbus with some very tough matchups. “We have New Hanover in the Jamboree and then we go back to play Hoggard the next week,” he said. “Then we’ll have to get ready for the big game with Loris. “We’re looking forward to what lies ahead this season,” Hutchison said. “We’re going to work hard and do all we can to keep our program running well. “Everybody’s looking forward to getting it started,” he added.

Vikings looking for improvement in 2014

Over the last 10 seasons, the football record at West Columbus High School stands at a combined 34 wins and 84 losses. Suffice it to say, the Vikings have struggled on the gridiron during the past decade. The only winning season in that span was 2006 when the Vikings posted an 8-5 record and advanced to the second round of the state 1A playoffs behind a strong nucleus of senior players. Last fall, the Vikings opened the season with a 2-2 record but then lost all seven their Three Rivers 1A-2A Conference games. They did manage to land a state 1A playoff berth and traveled to Charlotte where they shut out Davidson Community School 13-0. They lost to Three Rivers

the athletic director position vacated by Little. “It’s a challenge,” Jones said. “Football has been a struggle at West Columbus, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be turned around. The potential has always been here. “Low numbers in the personnel department seems to be the biggest drawback most years,” Jones said. West Columbus enjoyed its peak of success in the late 1970s and had some respectable runs in the 1980s and 1990s. In recent years, West Columbus has had a handful players who have been among

best in the county, but overall team depth has kept the Vikings from reaching a level of consistency. Fielding a junior varsity team has often been a difficult undertaking. Jones said the Viking varsity roster will carry close to 30 players this season, and that most of the players have

ing the off-season. “A lot of them are wanting to stay around and work more,” Jones said. “I had to turn the field lights off the other night to get them to come in.” Two-way lineman Kalyk Banks is one of the top returnees on the Viking squad this season. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Viking senior, who also plays basketball for WCHS, has heard from several Division I college programs, according to Jones. Rostin Bromell returns to the starting running back

spot he has held the past two years. He has played his way through injuries much of the time. Fred Evans returns as a versatile runner, receiver, kick returner and defender and Johnny McFadden will assume the starting quarterback assignment full time this season. Xavier Keel also returns as a two-way back. Key losses included standout fullback-linebacker Adrian Buie, running back Chris Thompson and receivers Anthony Davis, Marquis York and kicker Tanner Daniels.

Pack eyes another strong season

With an 11-3 record, a highly respectable third-round appearance in the 2013 state 1AA football playoffs, and a lot of off-season enthusiasm, Coach Luke Little and his Whiteville Wolfpack are hoping that their football fortunes will grow even more positive in 2014. “It was a good season, but we came close to making it an even better one,” said Little, whose Wolfpack last fall fashioned a nine-game winning streak and fell to eventual state 1AA champion James Kenan 17-7 on the Tigers’ homefield. The Wolfpack out-scored its opposition by a 14-game total of 492-162. “We know we have to work even harder and be even more prepared this season,” he added. “Except for the losses to South Columbus and James Kenan, things turned out pretty well for us. We got plenty of school and community support.

“We’re excited about the coming season … but as I said, we know we have our work cut out for us,” said Little, whose team tied South Columbus for the 2013 Three Rivers 1A-2A Conference championship. Several key players from last year’s team were lost to graduation. Those included

fullback Tykwan McDougal, linemen Zach Wilson and Adam Bastug, and quarterback Dylan Williams, and defensive backs Aljere Adams, Antonio Faulk and Nick Ciamillo. Still, the Wolfpack is returning strong at nearly

Pack Continued from Page 24 every position. Little said that only two players are having to start on both offense and defense in pre-season drills and those are linemen Spencer Campbell and Tesean Shipman. Campbell, who garnered 1A All-State honors last season as a junior, has shed 35 pounds since last season and is now down to 265, giving him more quickness and stamina at his interior positions. Senior running back Terrin Manning is back to spearhead the Wolfpack running game after providing well over 1,000 yards in rushing last season. Garrett Wilson, Austin Reeves and Tony Powell are back at the linebacker positions they manned all of last season, and Nate Powell and Jamyson Floyd return in the defensive secondary. Senior Gerardo Maggioli has provided the Wolfpack with one of the area’s strongest kicking games the past two seasons, providing plenty of consistency from

the 40-yard field goal range and kick-offs to the end zone. Junior Nydir Carr has stepped into the starting quarterback slot and brings versatility to the backfield. The Wolfpack has a demanding non-conference schedule as three of its first four games are against 2A powerhouses North Brunswick, East Bladen and Clinton and the other is against a much-improved West Bladen team. Last year, the Wolfpack dropped its opener to North Brunswick before reeling off nine straight wins. “With the schedule we have, we could head into conference play with a losing record and still be as good a team as we were last year,” Little said. The 2013 Wolfpack squad enjoyed its best season since 1992 last fall while advancing to the third round of the state playoffs for only the third time since 1993. “Last season really helped bring the program together, and we’re hoping to keep that up this time around,” Little said. “Our guys are showing a lot of pride and dedication and they are intent on making it another good year.”
