By BRITTANY COTTLE An unknown author once said, “It is not the title, nor the crown that counts. It is not the weight that is lost that really amounts. It is not the makeup design or the gown that you wear, or the shape of your build or the length of your hair. You see, the growth of a queen is all done inside. It is nothing support hose or makeup can hide. The real preparation is done in the mind; it is leaving your fears and your faults behind. It is lifting your sound to a place that is far seen. It is molding a woman to the height of a queen…” I have never been good at goodbyes so this is just an “until we meet again.” First and foremost, this year would not have been possible without my Lord and Savior. A blessing sent straight from heaven, this year has overwhelmed me with opportunity and excitement and I owe every bit of that to the Lord. Although many people were
by my side along the way, He is my stronghold and my foundation and I glorify Him for His unending love. “God is good all the time. All the time He is good.” Mama: You have to be the first person I thank simply because you have been in every footstep this year. You have supported me, loved me, and encouraged me every step of the way. If it was a trip to a parade just to find out it was cancelled, a quick trip back to the hotel room at the Rhododendron Festival because I left something behind, or a small task that you completed just for me on your own time simply because you knew it would help me out, you’ve been there to catch my fall, lift me up, and help me to be the best I could be this year. Thank you for your endless love and your hard work. You embody strength and poise that I will forever admire. I love you. Daddy: While I walked away from pageants some years ago because sports seemed to
be the new thing for us, you have adjusted well to this year. While I know that some weekends you still wish we were at a tournament playing ball instead of at a parade, your support either way has been remarkable. In fact, sometimes I wonder if Mrs. Causey enjoys seeing you more at events then she does seeing me. Thank you for always being a team player, even if that means going dress shopping with me. I love you. Leslie: thank you for always being there this year whether I needed you to drive me in a parade or spend the night with me at Mama Causey’s. I will forever be indebted to you for your participation in the pageant just a few years ago because through that, a seed was planted in our family that has impacted each of our lives, especially mine. Amanda: Thank you for having my back and for being there for me. I am so thankful for your support and encouragement throughout this year. Whether you were attending

Welcome To Chadbourn! We hope you enjoy our annual
A Message from the Mayor . . . Welcome to the 82nd Annual North Carolina Strawberry Festival, the oldest agricultural event in the state. The Town of Chadbourn is proud to carry on a tradition that began when the strawberry was king and more strawberries were shipped from Chadbourn than from anywhere else in the world. This year, the Strawberry Festival promises to be one of the biggest and best celebrations ever! We are glad that you are here to enjoy all of the festivities with us. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you again soon. Sincerely, Fax Rector, Mayor Town of Chadbourn

And the winner is….Oh my goodness.. I thought I heard my name, did I just hear what I thought I heard? Yes it was and yes I did...I will never forget the moment when my name was called as the winner of the 2013 North Carolina Strawberry Festival Princess Scholarship. It was a dream come true and I didn’t know nor would I have believed how being crowned would change my life forever. Last May through a very special twist of fate, I was able to seize a unique moment in the North Carolina Strawberry Festival Pageant history when I was crowned the 81st princess. On that evening I was so excited, yet I admit that I was a little scared. During the competition I had full confidence in myself because of my family and friends. But as I was being crowned, I had so many thoughts running through my head...What have I gotten myself into, can I keep up with appearances, can I
keep up with expectations, can I really do this job? Well that didn’t last but a minute because I had to hit the ground running. I knew that there was no looking back and I quickly realized that I and I alone would be embarking on the journey of a lifetime. That night when I finally laid my head onto my pillow, I promised myself that I would be the best princess that I could be. For the next year, I would commit to several goals; I would better myself, I would inspire my peers, and I would strive to represent Chadbourn, Columbus County and North Carolina well. I hope that I was successful and that I made you proud. This past year has been filled with wonderful opportunities, special time with my family and making new friendships that I am sure will last a lifetime. I have had many, many adventures along the way this last year. I rode in the biggest grocery
cart in NC, square danced on a mountain, learned to spit (watermelon seeds), visited schools, distributed Christmas items and I even hung out with the Cat in the Hat. Yep I’m a very lucky girl but I couldn’t and I would not be where I am now without the support of a lot of people. An old A frican Proverb says, it takes a village to raise a child, so I guess it is safe to say that it takes a bigger village take care of a pageant girl. I wouldn’t be where I am without a loving, supportive group of people by my side. I could never t ha n k t he Creech’s enough, I always know that I can always count on each of you for any and everything. Every princess needs a glam squad, and I had the best. Ms Cindy Love, Miss Cherry Miles, Uncle Frederick Stephens and the rest of the All Occasions Bridal & Formal Family, thank you for keeping me pageant ready. Miss Gina, Miss Jai, Miss Marilyn, Fair

She’s also taking classes at Craven Community College in a dual enrollment program with her high school. Although she has not yet chosen a college major, her interests are in allied health and business management, and she says, “Ideally, I plan to pursue a double major or at least add a minor

She currently is taking private dance lessons. She moved at the beginning of the school year to a new, huge high school for her senior year. “My friends and family have been somewhat surprised,” she says, “with how easily I made the transition. I also love to travel with family and friends.” Emily is a member of Western Prong Baptist Church and an avid Relay for Life volunteer, having attended Relays since she was two years old. I strongly believe that God places certain people in our lives and willingly takes them out of our lives at the right time for the right reasons and I couldn’t be more thankful for your presence in my life again. I’m not going to say pageants aren’t your thing, because while they certainly may not be, you make them your thing just for me. Thank you for being my best friend and for loving me. I love you. Corby and Justin: Thank you both for being the brothers I never had. You two are awesome photo-takers. (Really, just one more...I didn’t like that one.) Thank you for always sitting through my pageants. I love you both. Mrs. Causey: Words could never describe my appreciation and love for you. Ever since Leslie spent a year with you as queen and then Amanda as princess, you have become such a significant person
in my life and you mean more to me than you will ever know. Your love and passion for the Strawberry Festival and for each girl that you get to know through the pageant speaks volumes and inspires me daily. From late night visits to Chinese restaurants, talks in the car about the year you “taught Leslie life lessons,” “brought Amanda out of her shell,” and how you were going to spend this year “putting me back in mine,” and random phone calls just to talk about life, you have become such a special part of my life. I love you “Berry” much. Cathy: I am blessed to have gotten to know. Your hard work and dedication for the pageant does not go unnoticed and I appreciate all the work you put in to making it a success. Three Sampson County sisters have worn Strawberry crowns When Strawberry Queen Brittany Cottle relinquishes her crown on May 2 in the West Columbus High School Auditorium, she’ll become the third member of her family to become former Strawberry Festival royalty. The young women are the daughters of Cindy and Terry Cottle of Clinton, and their dad lauds their pageant participation for helping prepare them for life later on. Now 25 years old, Leslie H. Cottle was crowned Strawberry Queen in 2007, 22-year-old Amanda B. Cottle was named Strawberry Princess in 2008, and 18-year-old Brittany J. Cottle is the current Strawberry Queen. Longtime Strawberry Festival ramrod Densil Worthington says he is unaware of three members of Strawberry Festival royalty ever having come from one family, except in the case of the Cottles. The girls’ dad, Terry, comments, “My wife, Cindy, and I have not minded one single bit making all the long many, many trips to Whiteville and Chadbourn and all over the
state since 2007 during the time that our girls have been a part of Strawberry royalty. We have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this wonderful festival and pageant each year and the girls have enjoyed representing your communities and your Strawberry Festival. The friendships made, the experiences gained have truly been something they and we all will never forget and they are irreplacable. We would definitely do it all over again if we had the chance and, to be quite honest, we are deeply saddened that it is coming to a close.” He added, “These moments, these opportunities, and the people we have met and the friendships made has truly helped each of our girls and us all to ‘Put A Berry In Our Life!’ This quote/saying is something that was used quite often during their reign and still is among them today.” Cottle says that one of the greatest assets his daughters have taken away from the experience and competing in any pageant is the interview process. He says, “I know that many people are not very fond
of so-called ‘beauty pageants,’ but we have found that it’s more than who walks the best, who is the prettiest, who spent the most money on a dress or who had the best talent. What they really take away is the experience of learning how to carry and conduct themselves in talking with and communicating with others that come into their paths.” One of the ways of accomplishing that is through what Cottle calls the “dreaded” interview. “All three of our girls have found that the experience of participating in pageant interviews has been a great asset to them in other areas of life,” he says. The oldest daughter, Leslie, is a second grade teacher at Malpass Corner Elementary School in Burgaw. She lives in Wilmington and is working on her Masters of Education at East Carolina University. She received her degree in K-6 elementary education from UNC-Wilmington, where she received a N.C. Teaching Fellows Scholarship. The middle daughter, Amanda, will receive her degree in K-6 elementary education from
UNC-Wilmington next month. She plans to teach for four or more years before opening her own daycare. Amanda was also a scholarship recipient while at UNC-W, having received the N.C. Prospective Teachers Scholarship. She will graduate from college next month and plans to marry Corby Allen in November. The youngest, Brittany, who will give up her crown on May 2, is in the process of completing several scholarship applications and scholarship interviews to enable her to attend UNC-Wilmington this fall. She plans to major in business. Brittany currently is in the top ten in her senior class at Midway High School in Spiveys Corner. Cottle feels that his daughters’ success is primarily due to the experience and knowledge gained by doing pageants and participating in interview skills training. He says, “These are valuable tools needed and necessary for our young people to compete for scholarships and jobs in today’s world that not many young people have or ever attain. I have to attribute our three girls’ abilities to compete at this level and to have good, positive interviews to the fact that the NC Strawberry pageant competion process and other pageants that they have done have a requirement that they
compete in interviews. This experience cannot be attained any other way!” He says that winning a Strawberry crown is not like winning just any other pageant, noting that when a young woman wins, she must commit to a year of traveling all over North Carolina visiting communities that have their own agriculture-related festivals where the girls get to perform their talents, meet and greet many other girls and townspeople while representing the community of Chadbourn and promoting the N.C. Strawberry Festival and the strawberry industry. Cottle adds, “A true bonus for our three girls has been the plus of getting to spend time and be queen or princess under the daily guided hand and watchful eye of their ‘adopted grandmother,’ Mrs. Catherine B. Causey. She has taught them so much about life and about how to carry themselves as a queen, princess and a young lady. She has demanded much of them and they will cherish this friendship with her for the rest of their lives. We and they are so thankful to have had this tremendously, wonderful opportunity the past few years and our girls are so much better off as people for having had this opportunity.”
40 vendors to provide variety
Vendors from across the area will provide a great variety of food and crafts for the enjoyment of everyone attending this year’s Strawberry Festival. Approximately 40 vendors will exhibit various items in a flea market atmosphere. These items will include candles, jewelry, handcrafted woodwork, crafted glassware and art. Types of food that can be enjoyed this year will consist of Mediterranean style, blooming onions, funnel cakes, pizza, subs, BBQ or just good old fashioned hot dogs or hamburgers. For the children, the midway will be provided by Fun-Time Amusements coming to the festival on Friday and lasting thru festival day. These events will be located at the vendor field beside the Food Lion Shopping Center and behind Hardee’s. Festival organizer (Submitted photos) Densil Worthington commented, “Come out and enjoy a complete Leslie Cottle, left, was crowned Strawberry Queen in 2007. Her sister, Amanda, center, was crowned Strawberry Princess in 2008, and another sister, Brittany, right, was day of fun and relaxation as we celebrate the 82nd Annual North Carolina Strawberry Festival on May 3.” crowned Strawberry Queen last year.

Strawberry culture and the Strawberry Festival
Strawberry culture began in Chadbourn in 1895. The first planting of strawberries failed, but the next year six and threequarters acres of berries were planted. The grower sold berries for a total value of $5,562. In 1897, 632 quart crates of berries were shipped from Chadbourn and the following year 6,000 crates were shipped, a phenomenal increase of a thousand percent! The growth of the industry continued and in 1907, the peak year of the movement, 347,000 32-quart crates were shipped and Chadbourn became the Klondyke Strawberry Capital of the World. In 1907, the largest one-day
shipment of strawberries was made. A hundred and eighty railroad box carloads – 36,000 crates or 1,152,000 quarts of strawberries – all of which had been harvested between sunrise and sunset was moved by rail from Chadbourn to points all over the country. The industry continued to thrive and produce income for growers. Eventually it also provided entertainment. In the early 1930s, the American Legion decided to sponsor a dance for the purpose of raising funds for the building they were constructing. This was the first Strawberry Festival Dance. The dance was a great suc-

cess and the Legion adopted it as an annual event. In the years of the 1930s they brought to town the big name bands of the era: Tommy Dorsey, Guy Lombardo and many others. One area resident remembers that the night Guy Lombardo played, the dance floor overflowed and 1,000 spectators watched and listened to the music. Another resident remembers a Strawberry Festival that lasted all week. Dances were held every night and the week was climaxed with the big dance featuring a nationallyfamous band. The American Legion passed sponsorship of the dance on to other groups and clubs. For a number of years, the Chadbourn Civitan Club was the force behind the festival dance. In recent years, the N.C. Strawberry Festival has sponsored a parade of admirable proportions for a small rural town. Cooking contests, beauty contests, art exhibits, homemade strawberry shortcake and many other events now contribute to a great Strawberry Festival.

WECT-TV’s Bob Townsend is grand marshal for berry fest Grand marshal for the 82nd annual North Carolina Strawberry Festival will be Bob Townsend, co-host of the “Carolina in the Morning” show on WECT-TV, Channel 6. Townsend is no stranger to the Strawberry Festival, having attended several over the years. Bobby Ray Townsend was born in Henrico County, Virginia, but grew up on a family farm in Rowland in Robeson County. When he was 15 his parents moved to Lumberton and he transferred to Lumberton High School, from which he graduated in 1969. He attended Pembroke State University. He started his broadcast career with part-time employment at WBYB Radio in St. Pauls at the age of 15. He also worked part-time at WAGR and WTSB in Lumberton. In 1967 he started working at WFMO in Fairmont and worked there until 1971, when he left to become
Bob Townsend Grand Marshal sports director at WECT-TV and later became the morning show anchor. In 1978, Townsend made the decision to move his family to a small town environment and became the general manager of WZBK and WLSE in Wallace.
Due to the decline in smalltown radio, he went back into television with WITN-TV in Greenville and became their political reporter who covered Raleigh to Greenville news. In 1988 he became manager of WTAB Radio in Tabor City and a year later went back to WECT to resume co-anchor duties of the “Carolina in the Morning” show. Through all his travels with work, he maintained his home in Wallace for his family. Townsend is married to the former Rosalind Younger, also from Lumberton, and they have two daughters, Tracy Potter and Rae Riley, the three grandchildren, Wyatt, Cole and Zella. The grand marshal has been very active in the Wallace civic community, participating in the Lions Club, Rotary International, the Wallace Chamber of Commerce and Watha United Methodist Church.

Chadbourn ECA planning for festival foods contest By ALLEN TURNER
Members of the Chadbourn Extension and Community Homemakers Association are getting ready for the annual Strawberry Food Products Contest, which will be held Saturday, May 3, at the Chadbourn Community Library. Barbara Larrimore, the committee chair for the contest, is leading the organizational effort. Entries will be accepted at the library from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on May 3. Judging will occur from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The food exhibits will be reopened for public viewing at 11 a.m. and remain on display until participants pick up their entries by 3 p.m. The contest is designed to promote the use of the Barbara strawberry as a nutritious and palatable product and the contest is designed so that a person of any age or sex may enter. Novice and experienced cooks have enjoyed presenting both traditional and innovative recipes and over the years the cooks have enjoyed receiving acclaim for the efforts. Three cash prizes will be offered in both the adult and youth (first grade through high school senior) divisions. Qualified judges from a wide geographical area will be coming to town to judge the entries. They include retired extension home agents and school cafeteria personnel. Following are the contest rules: 1. The contest will be divided into two divisions: A. Adult B. Youth (first grade through high school senior). 2. Dishes will be judged in five categories in each division. Only one entry from an individual in each division. A. Appetizers. (Includes breakfast foods, breads, uncooked and cooked processed syrups, preserves, sauces, jelly and jam.) Note: Two individual servings of each recipe will be accepted by the Strawberry Food Products Committee. B. Cake (One-fourth of a cake is acceptable or a whole cake may be entered.)
C. Pastries, Pies and Tarts. (Pastries: two individual servicings of each recipe are acceptable. Pies: an eight-inch pie is acceptable.) D. Salads and Other Deserts. (Includes all types of gelatin dishes, ice cream, etc. Two individual servings are acceptable.) E. Low Calorie or Sugar Free Salads and Other Deserts 3. The food exhibits will be closed to the public during judging and reopen at 11 a.m. to remain open until 3 p.m. 4. Prizes in both the Adult and Youth divisions will consist of $15 and a blue ribbon for first place, $10 and a red ribbon for second place and $5 and a white ribbon for third place. 5. Participants will Larrimore be responsible for collecting their dishes and plates by 3 p.m. on contest day. 6. No entries will be sold to or sampled by the public. 7. Recipes are to be written on a 5x8 index card and left with the strawberry dish. The correct ingredients and method for preparing should be listed. The recipe becomes the property of the Extension Homemakers Association. 8. Entries will be received between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. and judging will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. The homemakers group has been sponsoring the contest since 1970, and Yates has been involved since 1983. Although Larrimore is chairing the contest for the second consecutive year, Yates has served as chair more than any other person. Under her direction, the contest grew over the years and the Strawberry Cookbook, a collection of recipes submitted, has been improved. The recipe book is sold for $10 and has become a fund raiser for the association. Previous editions of the cookbook from several years are available for purchase. Call Barbara Larrimore at 654-4540 for more information on the contest or on available cookbooks.

The strawberry is not only nutritious; it is a delicious treat as well, and my favorite fruit. Thankfully my birthday falls in the spring so I can always celebrate with strawberry shortcake made with fresh, North Carolinagrown strawberries. After all, if you want the best, “It’s got to be N.C. Strawberries.” The strawberry season also heralds, in the start of the North Carolinas growing season and kicks off the opening of famers markets across the state, so their arrival is eagerly awaited by many. Best wishes for a safe and successful festival and a great strawberry season. Steven W. Troxler N.C. Commissioner of Agriculture

Strawberry-Lemon Shortcakes
9 ounces all-purpose flour (about 2 cups) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 1/4 cups low-fat buttermilk 1 tablespoon grated lemon rind Cooking spray 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar 4 cups sliced strawberries 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/4 cups frozen fat-free whipped topping, thawed 6 tablespoons chilled butter, cut into small pieces
Preheat oven to 425°. Weigh or lightly spoon 9 ounces (about 2 cups) flour into dry measuring cups, and level with a knife. Combine flour, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Cut in chilled butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine 1 1/4 cups buttermilk and grated lemon rind. Add the buttermilk mixture to flour mixture, and toss gently with a fork to combine. (Dough should be wet and about the texture of cottage cheese.) Coat a 9-inch round metal cake pan or baking sheet with cooking spray. Place 1/2 cup flour in a shallow dish. Scoop 10 equal dough portions into dish. Gently shape each portion into a round by tossing in flour to help shape the dough. Arrange in pan. Discard excess flour. Brush dough with melted butter, and sprinkle evenly with 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar. Bake at 425° for 22 minutes or until the shortcakes are lightly browned. Cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes. Remove shortcakes from pan. Cool on wire rack. Combine berries, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and lemon juice; toss to coat. Let stand for 15 minutes. Split each shortcake in half; spoon about 1/3 cup berry mixture and 2 tablespoons whipped topping into each.

Deb Wilson in 11th year heading entertainment show Eleven years ago, local singer/songwriter/entertainer Deb Wilson came up with a good idea for a new event for the North Carolina Strawberry Festival, and it has proven to be one of the best crowd pleasers yet. Wilson introduced the idea for a Variety Entertainment Stage. She was willing to make all the contacts for setting up the stage, getting the sound system and recruiting individuals and groups to perform. That was in 2004 when Wilson emceed the first variety show on a flatbed truck in the Food Lion parking lot. Five years later, the entertainment pavilion was built in the field behind the Chadbourn Hardees and has since served as the main stage for the North Carolina Strawberry Festival. In her 11th year with the N.C. Strawberry Festival, Deb Wilson will once again
Deb Wilson serve as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the Saturday Entertainment Variety Show which begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, spotlighting a variety of local talent. Wilson will kick off the variety show followed by performances from local youth: Kayla Greene & Allie Thompson, Jennifer Causey, and Ny-
dir & Adaya Singletary. At 11:30 a.m., the award-winning North Carolina Strawberry Festival Cloggers from Amy’s Academy of Dance Arts will take the stage, as well as other Amy’s dance troupes. At 12 noon, Kayla Sellers & Brittany Walker will sing, followed by the talented Praise & Worship band from Northwood Church, Heartbeat. At 1 p.m., the female vocal group The Glory Girls from Southport will perform. At 2 p.m. the N.C. Strawberry Festival parade gets into gear, and at 3 p.m., line dancing takes place at the Entertainment Stage. The talented Christian rock band, New Beginnings, starts the evening entertainment at 3:30 p.m. New Beginnings is a band from Whiteville and band members are Trent Brown, Anthony Cook, Tucker Ellis and Bryan Ramos. At 4 p.m., registration for
the annual Strawberry Spittin’ Contest will be held at the sound booth in the main stage area. Everyone is invited to participate, and cash prizes will be awarded in adult and youth divisions. Distance is what counts, so come see how far you can “spit” a strawberry. Contest begins at 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m. Deb Wilson will entertain, singing music from

This year, come experience the many events that are part of the festival. The pancake supper, chicken bog, hillbilly music, beach music, hour of prayer, carnival, parade, pageant, talent shows, strawberry auction, strawberry food show, crafts and vendors are what make the festival so special. Many thanks to our sponsors and contributors. Without you, the festival could not go on. A big thanks to NC Dept of Agriculture, Goodness Grows in North Carolina, Brunswick Electric, Honeycutt Produce, Black’s Tire, Bailey’s, Piggly Wiggly, and all who contributed to our festival.
