By KAYLA BAXLEY Last May I was awarded a title that would bring an enormous amount of change into my life. When I was crowned I was fully aware of the expectations set before me. However, I could not have imagined the impression it would have on my life. I have been granted such wonderful opportunities since I won this title, but it couldn’t be possible without significant people playing important roles in my life. First, I must thank God for all His many blessings. I am so thankful for His mercy and salvation, without which I could not continue. Thank you Lord for providing me with this wonderful opportunity. This blessing has astounded me with such excitement and opportunities that I truly owe to my Lord and Savior. Momma: I am so thankful that God has allowed me to be your daughter. You have remained by my side throughout this year as well as in ev-

ery aspect of my life. You have loved, supported and encouraged me more than anyone ever could. Whether it was helping me look my best, being a one-woman audience so I could practice singing, completing behind the scene tasks, or offering me advice when needed, you have been there to do it all. Thank you for always lifting me up and being the amazing person that you are. You truly exemplify strength, compassion, sincerity and many other amazing qualities. I am very grateful to you as my role model and I genuinely admire who you are. I love you. Daddy: If any father has deserved the title of “Pageant Dad,” it would definitely be you. I do not know how I would have made it through this year without you. There has not been one day that has passed that I felt I could not depend on you. Thank you for always making sure I had a car in every parade, for always driving me in the parades, offering your “Pageant Dad” advice

when solicited, and always going dress-shopping with me. I greatly appreciate all the sacrifices you have made and all the love you have unselfishly given me. I could never thank you enough. I love you. Samantha: I could not have asked for a better sister. Although you are my baby sister, I look up to you. You have such a strong spirit and such a genuine personality. You have taught me that to be myself is a great reward. Thank you for that life lesson. I would also like to thank you for always making yourself available to do my hair and make-up for parades and appearances. You have such talent and I could not have looked my best without you. Thank you and I love you so much, sissy. Grammy and Papa: Your unending love and support in every aspect of my life truly overwhelms me. I’m thankful to have two people I can count on fully. I specifically want to thank you for supporting me in my vocal abilities. There

Welcome To Chadbourn! We hope you enjoy our annual

A Message from the Mayor . . . Welcome to the 83rd Annual North Carolina Strawberry Festival, the oldest agricultural event in the state. The Town of Chadbourn is proud to carry on a tradition that began when the strawberry was king and more strawberries were shipped from Chadbourn than from anywhere else in the world. This year, the Strawberry Festival promises to be one of the biggest and best celebrations ever! We are glad that you are here to enjoy all of the festivities with us. Enjoy your stay, and we hope to see you again soon. Sincerely, Donald Ray Bass, Mayor Town of Chadbourn

Princess Wooten farewell

W hen I was crow ned, I felt as if my reign would last forever. I took everything for granted: square-dancing, spitting watermelon seeds, being escorted as if I were true royalty, and even having little girls say they wanted to be a princess just like me. I must say a few proper “thank-yous” for this experience, though nothing can truly express how grateful I am. First and foremost, I must thank God for this amazing once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Strawberry is one of His many blessings in my life. Mama: “Do you have your crown? Car signs? Shoes? ” One word: Lifesaver. Through it all, this princess would be lost without you. I know you went above and beyond to make sure I had the most beautiful gowns and everything necessary. Thank you so much. You may turn into a pageant mom yet. Daddy (aka the princess’ bodyguard): Who’s the only

person that would drive three hours on last-minute notice to an appearance and escort the only royal willing to look at antiques in the summer heat? My biggest supporter, that’s who. I’ll forever be your princess. Mema and Papa: You two h ave b e en s o supp or t ive throughout my reign, always giving me words of wisdom. I carry you in my heart wherever I go. I know you both think that I am going to break my neck in all of these high heels, but if I do, go visit me in the hospital. I love you both more than life itself. Ashley and Joseph: Ashe, thank you for reminding me that no panel of judges can ever define my true worth. Joe, thank you for the pictures when I was competing and for the Chanel lipstick that was stunning on stage. I appreciate you both. Alice-Christian Pridgen: Ali, it’s not easy to put into words how I feel, but here goes nothing. Thank you for

your wisdom and guidance, not only in Strawberry, but in life. You’re the true definition of a proper southern lady, and your good deeds do not go unnoticed. You are forever my closest berry sister and my friend. ABS. Casey G ore : You’re my dance, vocal, and tough-love pageant coach who also happens to be my hairdresser. You and your family have welcomed me as if I were your own. Thank you for being so amazing. Cathy Britt: Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to make strawberry outfits for me. You’ve always been there when I needed your sewing talents and your guidance. Laura Pridgen: What can I say? You’ve done so many alterations for me that I’ve lost count. I trust no one else with my gowns. If I needed something done last-minute, you always came through for me. Thank you.

Congratulations on the 2015 Strawberry Festival

Victoria Elizabeth Wooten 2014 Strawberry Festival Princess Additional thanks goes to Monograms Unlimited, Merritt’s Sporting Goods, and especially Budget Printing. and downs; however, no one but ourselves could ever understand how much we really love each other. When we work together, we always get things done, even if it’s just the two of us in what seems like a milelong list of things to do. You Continued on page 7

I believe it is critical to continue cancer research because it is so prominent in our world today,” she says.

Besides Relay for Life, Tara enjoys singing, dancing, volunteering, participating in the Media Review Team for the Columbus County Health Department, spending time with her family and friends, working and being a typical teenager. The 5’3” 138 lb. greeneyed brunette is a member of the Science Club at South Columbus and the A/B Honor Roll. She was voted “Most Talkative” by her senior class. Tara says, “I am certain that it would be an absolute honor to represent the town of Chadbourn and the North Carolina Strawberry Festival as the North Carolina Strawberry Festival Queen. Pageant committee and sponsors: I thank you all for your dedication to the pageant and the best (if I do say so myself) agricultural festival in the state. I am forever changed for the better; you all are truly wonderful. My festival sisters (including Bob): Although I know that our lives will lead us separate ways, I hope that we will keep in touch. I will never forget the laughs we shared, and our memories will last forever. You are all the true definition of royalty. A dear queen once told me, “Once a queen, always a queen.” I find peace in that, and I hope all you lovely ladies will, too. Also, I may or may not have spelled your name backwards, Bob, but I still love you and your signature

I appreciate everyone that has even so much as smiled and sent a ray of sunshine my way during this past year. Thank you to all the people of North Carolina. I could not have been prouder to represent our entire state and its most profitable industry. To the next princess: Don’t blink. It has always brought me such joy and comfort to see you in the audience. I cannot begin to describe how appreciative I am for all the time you have given to me and given to this wonderful scholarship opportunity. I cannot say thank you enough. I love you both. Aunt Katie: You have supported me through each pageant and I couldn’t be happier than you have been by my side through this one. You always help me not only look my best on pageant day but also made me feel my best. You are such a positive person and always say the right words to help me get past my nerves. I’m so appreciative to have you in my life and to always be able to count on you. Thank you and I love you. Josh: Despite your lack of experience in the pageant

world you have definitely supported me throughout this experience. This may not be your choice of hobby but you actively participate simply because I enjoy it. Thank you for being such a positive presence in my life. I also thank you for your unfailing support and unconditional love. I love you beyond words. Catherine: You are such a magnificent and wonderful person. I feel so lucky to have met you. You have brought such light into my life. I love our special relationship. I know that I can always look to you for counsel, advice, and for a good time. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me and making this experience so memorable. I love you. Cathy: I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you this past year. You have such a bright and cheerful disposition that it is absolutely contagious. You have always been someone I could share a laugh with as well as someone I can confide in. I cherish all of our

memories together. I would also like to thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to this pageant. Your labors are highly valued and favored in my eyes. Victoria and Ally: One year ago we officially became the three musketeers. Since then we have made amazing and hilarious memories. I love how we have experienced multiple situations and somehow turn it into a festival of laughter. Thank you for those precious memories, for I will always cherish them. I love you both. I feel so blessed to have such loving and supportive people in my life who have guided me to where I am today. Thank you to everyone that has helped me throughout this amazing year. I am indebted to all because without them I could not encounter such extraordinary experiences. I have been able to travel from the mountains to the sea, all while developing a greater appreciation of our state. During this wonderful year I have made life-lasting

friendships that will last a lifetime. I have also made long-lasting memories that I will always hold near and dear to my heart. I am sad to see this time coming to an end, but I am thankful for this opportunity. With that being said I have one last thing to

Parade dedicated to memory of former Mayor Fax Rector The 2015 Strawberry Festival parade will be dedicated to the memory of former Chadbourn Mayor Fax Rector, who passed away on Jan. 20. Rector was a longtime elected official in Chadbourn, but long before he got involved in politics, he was a civic-minded public servant, doing much behind the scenes, most of which the people never heard about. That’s because when he took actions to improve Chadbourn and the well-being off its people he did so in most cases anonymously. Although thrust into a public role as an elected official, he never cared too much for the spotlight. He didn’t shy away from it, but he didn’t seek it out, either. After his retirement from the Star-News in Wilmington, and he and his wife, Beth, operated the Opening Doors preschool center in Whiteville from 1988 until 2011. As his obituary so rightly stated, “Fax demonstrated a deep and genuine love for the town of Chadbourn and the

citizens of Columbus County through his involvement in numerous civic endeavors. He served the community with distinction demonstrating his willingness to place his concerns for the public good ahead of his personal interests.” He served on the Chadbour n Town Council from 2003 until 2012. The last time he was up for election to the council, he decided it was time for some newer blood on the town board and did not file for re-election. What a testament to how highly the citizens held him it was when they went ahead and re-elected him, anyway, as a write-in candidate even though he did not run. When former Mayor Ken Waddell was elected to the state legislature in 2012, his fellow council members chose him to replace Waddell as mayor. He then was elected mayor in his own right in 2013 and served with distinction until his declining health forced his resignation a few months before his death.

Mayor Fax Rector is seen riding in last year’s Strawberry Festival parade. This year’s parade is dedicated to his memory. Rector was a fighter and was so courageous even as he battled several major health issues and he never lost his

smile. He maintained his optimism for the Town of Chadbourn until to the end of his life.

In Memory of Herb Harp Strawberry Festival Scholarship

This year marked the loss of a near and dear friend to the North Carolina Strawberry Festival, Herb Harp, who passed away on Jan. 25. Herb was not a native of Columbus County, but made it his newfound home, residing in Fair Bluff. For the past 10 years Herb served as the chief photographer for the N.C. Strawberry Festival. He also served and volunteered in many other capacities for the festival. Not only did the Strawberry Festival suffer a loss, but also many other organizations suffered the same loss. Herb volunteered for the Relay for Life, Southeastern Community College, Columbus County RSVP, and the N.C. Watermelon Festival. An accomplished chef, he cooked for many events at the Fair Bluff Baptist Church, the Town of Fair Bluff, and many other events too numerous to mention. Herb’s website (www.herbharpphotography.com) served as an excellent source for documenting many events in Columbus County over many

“An Evening of Strawberry Encounters” will be held Friday, May 1, from 6-9 p.m. at the home of Alice and George Wooten, 160 Kissam Lane in Evergreen Tickets are $25 per person and are available at CresCom Bank, or from Elaine Honeycutt, Judy Strickland and Densil Worthington.

We have served Columbus County for many years.

This year’s N.C. Strawberry Festival Encounters dinner will be in the peaceful community of Evergreen at the home of Alice and George Wooten, longtime supporters of the N.C. Strawberry Festival. The dinner will be held Friday, May 1, from 6-9 p.m. at 160 Kissam Lane in Evergreen. Dress will be casual. Encounters will be held on a family farm that several generations of Kissams (beginning with Alice’s great-grandparents) have owned since shortly after the Civil War. Alice and George have continued the Kissam tradition into the 5th generation of farming sweet potatoes, soybeans and cotton. “It only seems right that this year’s Encounters features one of the area’s historical f ar ms, since the 83rd North Carolina Strawberry Festival will be honoring the far mer as a collective parade marshal in recognition of the contribution to ag riculture and the e c o n o m y, ” said Elaine Honeycutt, Encounters chair person. In a setting of southern charm, attendees will be able to enjoy the atmosphere of live music, food, strawberry desserts galore and a chance to fellowship with family and friends. The master of ceremonies will be Chadbourn native Greg Thompson, a professional entertainer based in Florida who will offer humor. Miss North Carolina Beth Stovall also is scheduled to perform. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at CrestCom Bank, or from Elaine Honeycutt, Judy Strickland and Densil Worthington.

They are high iron and Vitamin C not to mention a healthy dose of folic acid, potassium and cancer- fighting antioxidants. The strawberry is not only nutritious; it is a delicious treat as well, and my favorite fruit. Thankfully my birthday falls in the spring so I can always celebrate with strawberry shortcake made with fresh, North Carolinagrown strawberries. After all, if you want the best, “It’s got to be N.C. Welcome to the 83rd Annual

NORTH CAROLINA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL at Chadbourn

Welcome to the North Carolina Strawberry Festival-Chadbourn. Come, enjoy, relax and gather memories that will last a life time! We hope that you will come out and enjoy the events that have been planned for the 83rd festival. This year we have chosen the framer as the parade marshal, honoring them for their hard work and endeavors. The first festival was held May 6, 1926 when the farmer was first recognized for their efforts during the first Strawberry Festival when Chadbourn was known as the “Strawberry Capital of the World. Today, we still celebrate the strawberry, the farmer, the tradition and heritage from the very onset . A special thanks to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Goodness Grows in North Carolina for their many years of support and guidance. A super big thanks to all our volunteers who put in countless hours to make sure the NC Strawberry Festival is a success. Including members of the various committee, the local clubs and our town employees who work effortlessly to make sure that Chadbourn is ready for the Festival. Thanks for all the extra time you take to make sure everything is prepared for the festival!

Guy Long

2015 NC Strawberry Festival President

To our patrons who continue to visit and support the North Carolina Strawberry Festival, thank you for your continued support. Welcome to the 2015 North Carolina Strawberry Festival, and to Chadbourn! Enjoy family and friends.
