As a bride, one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding is finding your wedding dress. It’s the one chance many of us will get to spend big on a dress, so it’s worth putting some effort into. Some women would have dreamed of a style or silhouette for a lifetime and some have no idea what they want. No matter what side of the spectrum you are on, make sure you go into the dress hunt with an open mind, information and inspiration! Although you might want to start trying on gowns as soon as possible, it’s always best to do a little bit of research. Lots of factors go into making a dress ‘the one’. Style, fit, availability and cost all come into play when you choose your wedding gown so you’ll be doing yourself a favour by reading up on what dresses are on offer and available to you before you start shopping. Also learn about different silhouettes, fabrics, designers and your body shape to get an idea of what is best for you. Here are some of the latest wedding dress designer collections, bridesmaids dress designs and trends, dresses for seasons, themes, style and venues. Look for a directory of wedding dress designers and retailers that will help guide you toward your perfect dress. Wedding Themes

D

esigning a wedding theme is a relatively new phenomenon. Gone are the days when a wedding was simply a wedding. Today most brides will plan their wedding day according to a theme, which can vary from a simple colour to an all out vintage affair. Either way the wedding theme will motivate and inform many elements of the day including the bridal party attire, venue, flowers, cakes, decorations, cars and more. A theme ties all the strands of your day together to create a well-coordinated and stylish celebration. There are no rules when it comes to a wedding theme. The important thing is how the theme is executed. A garden wedding, beach wedding, casual wedding or outdoor wedding are all location based wedding themes to consider. Mix with an era to give your wedding a vintage or retro flair, but perhaps you’d like to keep things classic or sleek and modern. Introduce some colour and you’ve got yourself a wedding theme! Your reception is the main focus of a wedding theme and your reception venue should dictate the best way to decorate. Venues that have relatively simple décor are best if you want to transform a function room into a medieval theatre or the set of the next Star Trek movie. While grand ballrooms or historic houses can present you with a ready-made set for your celebration. Uncomplicated wedding themes that use colours and motifs are most common and can look extremely effective.

Page 7

Once you have decided on your first priorities with decorating for your theme, the smaller decisions such as the wedding favours and table centrepieces will fall easily into place. Before you finalise any aspect of your wedding, ask yourself “Does this promote my wedding theme or detract from it?” If in doubt, leave it out! Another thing to avoid is adding too many uneccessary decorations simply because they fit with your theme. You want things to look simple and uncluttered. A well thought out and executed theme creates a vibrant party atmosphere, helping everyone get into the mood. Browse through dozens of inspiration shoots on blogs for ideas and suppliers who can make them happen! The colour wheel tool will also assist you with colour specific inspiration! What are you looking for? Garden Wedding, Beach Wedding, Casual Wedding, Outdoor Wedding.

11 Wedding ring shopping rules Exchanging wedding rings will probably be one of the most special moments in your life. Ensure that your wedding rings have the forever-factor. Besides the engagement ring, it is tradition that the bride and groom exchange wedding rings at their ceremony to show their mutual commitment to each other. Wedding rings quite literally come in all shapes and sizes and they can be extravagant or understated. Choosing wedding rings is a very personal aspect and no matter what you choose, make sure it is the perfect ring for the special person in your life. 1. Narrow Your Choices Because this is one of the few pieces—if not the only piece—of jewelry you’ll shop for together and wear every day, make some preliminary choices before you hit the stores. What color metal do you prefer: yellow, white or rose? Are you interested in something simple or over-the-top? Work these questions out to hone in on what you are looking for.

2. Start Your Search Early Once you have a basic idea of what you want, head out to the jewelry stores. Give yourselves at least two months to browse, research, price and revisit rings that catch your eye. Allow even more time if you’re interested in a custom piece; extras such as engraving can take up to one month.

4. Set a Budget A plain 14k gold band starts at around $330; plain platinum bands cost upward of $600 apiece. Diamonds can add considerably more to the cost. The price of engraving the inside of the wedding band depends on the font and on whether you have it engraved by hand or machine.

3. Be Different Don’t fret if you like platinum while he likes yellow gold. There’s no rule that you have to match metals or even styles. Pick wedding bands that reflect each of your style sensibilities and tastes. However, some aspect of the rings (which can be as simple as an inscription) should match.

5. Be Practical Keep your lifestyle in mind at all times. What’s the point of buying something pretty if it makes you uncomfortable or you have to remove it often (and increase your chances of losing it)? Remember, you’ll be wearing this band every day. The idea is to choose something that seamlessly becomes a

part of your life. If you work with your hands often, look for a streamlined ring with little to no frills. 6. Think Long-Term Don’t be afraid to be trendy, but make sure the style you choose is something you’ll still want to wear in 20 years (not to mention to all the jobs, PTA meetings and social functions in between). 7. Size It Right Most people rarely take their wedding band off. They wear them through summer, winter, exercise, pregnancy— all the times when your fingers swell and contract due to heat, cold, water retention and weight gain. To find the size that will best accommodate all these changes, do your “final fitting” when you are calm and your body temperature is normal. Never finalize your ring size in the morning (you retain salt from the night before), after you’ve just exercised (fingers swell) or when you’re extremely hot or cold.

8. Check for Quality Make sure the inside of the wedding band contains two marks: the manufacturer’s trademark (which proves they stand behind their work) and a quality mark (“24k” or “PLAT,” for example— proves it is what they say it is). If the ring consists of two or more metals, make sure there is a quality mark for each. 9. Clean It Often Cleaning your wedding rings is a cinch. For a ring with no stones, simply rub it with a soft, lint-free cloth (chamois is good). If your wedding ring has stones, wash and soak it in warm, sudsy water, and gently brush with a soft toothbrush or an eyebrow brush (too much pressure can loosen the stone from the setting). Then rinse and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. 10. Protect Your Investment Yes, metals, even platinum, are vulnerable. Avoid wearing your ring

when doing rough work or sports (which can nick and scratch a ring) and when working with concentrated chlorine, which is found in bleach, chemical cleaning solutions and swimming pool disinfectants (which can cause pitting or discoloration to your band). Nicks and scratches are most visible on matte finishes and most easily affect platinum, which is softer than white or yellow gold on the surface but more durable overall. Luckily it’s easy for your jeweler to reapply or change the finish or plating on your ring to restore its former glory. 11. Keep It Safe You’d be surprised (and probably a bit scared) at how easy it is to lose a ring. Hopefully you’ve chosen something that you rarely have to remove. When you absolutely have to remove your ring, put it in a designated place so you’ll always know where it is (pockets don’t count), and never near a sink. The most dangerous time to remove your wedding ring? When you’re away from home. That’s when rings are most likely to be lost or set down and forgotten.

Planning your wedding can be one of the most exciting but stressful times of your life. The most fun part of wedding planning is usually the HONEYMOON! Most couples get close to wedding time and can’t wait for it to be over so they can go on their honeymoon. That’s where your travel agent comes in. Your travel agent is here to make your honeymoon planning a fun and stress-free experience. Very often, your honeymoon might be your first big trip together. Hopefully, it will just be the beginning of a life full of travel adventures. To get started, you should contact your travel agent as soon as you know the date of your wedding. Deals are always better if you book earlier rather than closer to your travel date. Your travel agent will assist you in narrowing down where you would like to go based on what kind of trip you are looking for. Some brides and grooms are so exhausted after their wedding, they look for a great beach where they can just relax, be pampered, and enjoy the first days of their lives together. Others like a more adventurous trip where they can stay busy all the time. Honeymoon destinations vary from couple to couple. Most brides and grooms choose to go to a Caribbean island, Hawaii, or cruise if they are looking for the relaxing trip. For those who want to venture out and stay on the go, they might travel to Europe, New York City, Las Vegas or Disney World. Some couples choose to have a “weddingmoon,” which includes the wedding and honeymoon as one! You can take all of your friends and family with you to an island for your wedding and celebrate your honeymoon with you. Whatever you choose, your travel agent will do all the planning for you. He or she will advise you early in the planning process if you will require a passport or other types of identification for travel. If you plan several months prior to your honeymoon, you will not have to pay for the entire trip at once. Usually, a deposit is made at booking and final payment is due 60 days prior to travel. This helps the couple when budgeting. Your travel agent is here to make your honeymoon that special, trouble-free, enjoyable experience that comes after your wedding. Most travel agents will help you save money as they can price many different options for you. Your honeymoon, or any other travel adventure, is not the kind of thing you want to book online. You need a travel agent you can talk with about this important trip.

Honeymoon Checklist These handy hints might just help you save time and enjoy the dream holiday of a lifetime. Book early: It may seem like common sense but it’s important to plan your honeymoon well in advance, particularly if you want to travel in peak season. Tip: Indicate on your travel documents that you are honeymooners...you might be pleasantly surprised with the generous hospitality that you encounter along the way! Passport: Make sure your passport is valid. If there are less than six months remaining, organise a new passport three months before the wedding. “¨To find out more about getting your passport up to date log on to www.dfat.gov.au/geo/index. html. Application forms can also be obtained from your local post office. If you need a passport at the last minute, never fear as you can pay a priority processing fee that guarantees delivery within 48 working hours (dependant on all the right information being submitted). Visas: Many countries require a valid entry visa, so check with your travel agent whether you need one for your intended destination. Make sure you apply for your visa at least one month in advance of your honeymoon. Vaccinations: If you are travelling to a country where vaccinations are recommended try to have them at least three weeks before the wedding so any bruising or swelling will have subsided. Travel insurance: It is imperative that you take out travel insurance. It will give you peace of mind. Money: Estimate how much money you can afford to spend per day, then add a little extra to cover any unforseen expenses. If your honeymoon is not an all-inclusive package deal, factor in the cost of food, drinks, alcohol, activities, transport, excursions and perhaps a few decadent massages and bottles of bubbly! Do some research and get some basic prices before you leave. While you’re away: Don’t forget to make plans to ensure your home is secure while you are away. Arrange for someone to check on your home every few days and collect any post that arrives after you leave. A brimming post box is a loud and clear welcome to burglars. Obviously don’t forget about your pets! Flights: For interstate flights make sure you arrive at the airport at least one hour prior to departure and for international flights it’s recommended that you arrive three hours prior to departure. Duty free: One of the great perks you get when you take an overseas holiday is duty free shopping - remember to shop around so you know if you are getting a good price. First aid Basic essentials include: Headache tablets, Bandaids, Antiseptic, Sunscreen, Insect repellent, Tummy upset tablets, Re-hydration salts, Hay fever tablets, Eye drops. And if you are on prescription medication, including the pill, make sure you don’t run out mid-honeymoon.

Finding the right photographer for your wedding By FULLER ROYAL, M. Photo. Cr., F. Ph.

A

t a time when brides have more options than ever before for their wedding photography, far too many of them don’t do their homework beforehand and, as a result, are left with images that don’t live up to the excitement of their once-in-a-lifetime day. Twenty years ago, there were few truly professional wedding photographers – the men and women who hauled big medium format film cameras with lights, flashes, tripods and assorted gear. They came armed with a vast working knowledge of light, composition and posing. Newer photographers added the idea of “photojournalistic” wedding coverage. These photographers delivered proof albums full of beautiful imagery and even better “storybook albums” that told the bride and groom’s story. Fast forward to 2016. Digital cameras are the rule for not only the seasoned professional, but for the aspiring photographer. These same cameras are in the hands of absolute

novices as well. Today, there are photographers who still know how to deliver the goods, but they take on many new forms in the digital age. And there are a lot of photographers who call themselves “professional,” but far too often, they lack the experience and skills to successfully cover a wedding. Oh, their hearts are in the right place and many truly want to learn the craft of photography. Still, some miss the mark and it’s up to brides to make sure they know what they are getting into.

either printed or in digital form. Any photographer can present the best one or two images from each wedding. Is he or she consistent with the quality of the work from the start of the event through the end?

5.

Will your finished product be an album? Do you select the images for the album? Do you design the album? Or does the photographer do all of that?

Having said that, here are some tips for choosing the photographer who is the best fit for you.

6.

1.

7.

Schedule a face-to-face interview with the prospective photographer at his or her place of business. Make sure there is a physical address, even if it’s the photographer’s home, in case problems arise later.

2.

Ask to see samples of the photographer’s work. These should be printed. By the very nature of digital imaging, photography always has more “pop” on a computer screen. Does the photographer’s work hold its value and appearance when printed to photographic paper.

3. 910-445-3647 captureitphotography@outlook.com facebook: captureitphotography11

Is the photographer using a professional lab?

4.

Always ask to see a completed wedding,

Ask how many finished images will be in the album? And will any be retouched? Always look for hidden costs. Some unscrupulous photographers will sneak in fees for various services.

12.

Avoid photographers who have little or no personality or who don’t “play well with others.”

13.

Avoid the “photo divas” at all costs. These are the photographers who consider themselves “artists.” They sometimes forget that you are the one paying the bill.

8.

14.

9.

15.

If your finished product is a disc full of images, ask the photographer if each image will be properly cropped and adjusted for color and contrast. You and your photographer should agree beforehand on how many images you will see and/or keep. You will not want every image, nor will the photographer want you to have every image. That’s ridiculous. You are hiring your photographer to edit out the images he or she thinks are inferior.

10.

Make sure your photographer is comfortable with the videographer you are using, and vice versa.

11.

Make sure your photographer has the knowledge and experience to handle any situation that arises from inclement weather to dark sanctuaries to really large wedding parties crammed onto a really small altar. Photographers should have backup cameras and flashes, extras flash cards and lenses that will allow them to zoom in from the back of the church or capture the entire front of the sanctuary in one image. They should also have cameras and lenses that allow them to create images without the use of flash.

Enough cannot be said about flexibility and likability when it comes to photographers. Get recommendations and referrals. Don’t go strictly by what people say online, good or bad. Hire the right photographer from the start and then trust that photographer to do right by you. Hire the right photographer and you will have one less worry on your wedding day. Fuller Royal is a staff writer and photographer for The News Reporter. A member of the Professional Photographers of America and the Professional Photographers of North Carolina, he holds his PPA Master Photographer and Photographic Craftsman degrees. He retired from weddings in 2012 after completing his 262nd wedding.

Accomodations

Wake up in a plush bed on your wedding day or spend your first night as husband and wife in the room of a luxury hotel... Accommodation is a necessity surrounding most weddings, whether you need accommodation for friends and family flying in for the special day or a place for you and your bridesmaids to pamper and prepare. Choosing the right accommodation is important. You will need to consider most importantly the location and if you’re getting ready in a hotel make sure there is enough space for photos. It’s a good idea to view the accommodation in person before making a booking.

From island getaways to ski resorts””what you plan for your honeymoon probably depends on your personality. Many couples choose to have a honeymoon where they can simply relax undisturbed and enjoy some pampering. However, some couples choose to use their honeymoon to travel and explore new towns, cities or even discover foreign countries together. Whether you want to go abroad or keep it local, there are truly endless possibilities when it comes to your honeymoon and it doesn’t matter what you choose to do for your honeymoon””as long as it is special time spent with your partner. Sometimes we experience moments in life that are just so perfect, no picture can do them justice nor words describe their beauty. You compose a facebook status and load an instagram picture, but somehow you just don’t think your friends will get it because moments like this need to be lived in, tasted, written into our memories and relived whenever our skies turn grey.

Packing tips

Even though you’ve already made two big decisions - got hitched and found the perfect honeymoon destination - doubt and a twenty kilo limit linger in the air... But don’t worry, with a few hot travel tips, there’s a way to pack all the necessities including your favourite outfit and still have room for souvenirs. Keep your carry-on luggage light. It should hold: All documents - passport, airline, cruise or train tickets, the details of your flights and accommodation, an itinerary if you have one, maps. Wallet - including drivers license, insurance, bank and credit cards, and money. A book to read on the plane A spare pair of underwear, socks and a toothbrush - just in case your suitcase decides to take a detour through a different continent. Include in your bag: One warm jumper and a plastic raincoat won’t take up too much room. Plan for the impossible. Extra plastic bag- so your dirty laundry doesn’t try to mingle with your crisp white shirt. Coordinate your outfits around a central colour - then you can mix and match. A pair of rubber thongs is very useful - they will come between you and the suspicious surface of your bathroom, they’re great for reef walks if you holiday on a tropical island and can provide you with something to wear if your shoes get wet. A little flashlight can go a long way. You can get one small enough to use as a key ring and should your getaway suffer a sudden blackout, or if you convince your one-and-only to consult his map after dark - it will come in very useful! Travel medical kit - Include general medication for common ailments such as stomach aches and fever, cold medicine, anti diarrhoea tablets, laxatives, antiseptic cream and calamine lotion.
