Artist’s Statement
My exhibition has been inspired by Goya’s “Los Caprichos”. These are a set of 80 plates, each dealing with a separate theme rather than part of a continuous narrative, in which Goya comments on the social ills of his time. Through the use of allegories he exposes such things as the corruption of the church, witchcraft and the foibles of human nature.
I have selected some the images from “Los Caprichos” and looked at how Goya has created atmosphere through his use of composition and tonal qualities and attempted to incorporate this in my own work. I have also closely examined his printmaking techniques. My special interest is aquatint and I have experimented with di erent methods of applying it, such as sugar lift and pepper-pot.

My series of plates are set in an allotment. Through the use of metaphors I invite the viewer, whilst hopefully appreciating the images on face value, to also take time to contemplate on the contemporary social predicament that they depict.
