“We can live in the present, dwell in the past, and project into the future. Time is a construct, and our experience of life is heavily influenced by how we think about time and the habits we form around it”.
The Well Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart SmithThis body of work is centred around time spent in a place that, although rapidly changing, at a glance still evokes the past. Port Isaac is the village in which I live, as have my family for over 400 years, and through time its essence has slowly percolated into me through the myths, memories and folktales that are woven into every fibre of the place. I see time as cyclical and seasonal, not linear, and the familiarity of really knowing a place in all its guises brings comfort.
It is reassuring to know, in the depths of the wild destructive winter, that spring will come again: knowing where the first snowdrops, violets and primroses will appear is heart-warming, and is something that has been seen and celebrated for generations by many who are still living in the village today.
It is the old in the community who share tales and warnings about how to live in this place –they tell of ‘skittery grass’ close to a steep cliff, or blackthorn blossom that shouldn't be taken indoors. These words echo through me as I walk and see the village through their eyes. I am always challenged as to how to capture the essence of Port Isaac, and I choose to look at the unassuming elements that are of it and, as a fishing village, have sustained it.
Exploring through paint and print in this collection, I have deliberately condensed years and seasons into a single day from dawn to dusk that I hope evokes this tiny fragment of Cornwall. From the harbour, with its protective arm-like breakwaters, to the hidden valley trail leading to a love tree that bears mossy initials from yesteryear, to the familiarity of the sun’s trajectory spreading a late afternoon glow on the fields, and the moon’s shadow, illuminating the Tawny Owls as their haunting hoots send us to sleep. This magical place continues to sustain and inspire me. It has been home to so many from the past, and now the present, and will hopefully be home for many in the future.
