HANNAH DAVIES
FEATURED ARTIST
29th June to 24th July 2024
This new collection of paintings by Hannah Davies explores the theme of reflections. Hannah creates a sense of mystery and atmosphere through the use of transparent layers of oil paint, which she builds up slowly so that each veil of colour remains visible on the canvas. In the same way that light filters and refracts on a window, inside and outside are merged, mixing private and public spaces, and producing strange and surprising effects. Images develop to the viewer slowly, as if in a dream, drawing the eye and mesmerizing in their simultaneous sense of movement and stillness.
Alongside her paintings, Hannah’s love of drawing is evident in her Light Patches works, which explore the simple beauty of shards of sunlight thrown across a room. Like reflections, light patches are fleeting and ever changing, and are given permanence in Hannah’s images as a hazy impression, or a memory long forgotten.
Hannah was born in Cambridge in 1980. She moved to Cornwall to study for a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Falmouth College of Arts, graduating in 2002, and has since been selected more than once for the prestigious Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing prize. She continues to live and work in Cornwall.
