About Whitireia

Whitireia is a Government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rate and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become a tertiary institution of choice for close to 8,000 international and domestic students, who now study at one of seven contemporary campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Porirua and KÄ piti. In 2013, around 130 programmes of study are being offered to students, covering certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate levels. All of our programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry, to offer excellent applied qualifications.

Whitireia and Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) have formed a strategic partnership to develop a network of tertiary learning in the greater Wellington region. This partnership, aimed at putting 'students first', will provide new and existing students with access to a diverse range of relevant programmes of study plus other opportunities including; each campus becoming a one-stop-shop by providing a range of information on each institution, access to high quality teaching across the Wellington region and greater student diversity. The goal is that students will be able to transition seamlessly between Whitireia and WelTec and study for a qualification that is in demand by employers. The New Zealand Film and Television School has joined forces with Whitireia. Now a subsidiary of Whitireia New Zealand Limited, the film school has become part of the strong line-up of industry related study options available through Whitireia in 2013. The Film School is the only industry-run school of its kind in New Zealand. It is unique with its visiting tutor programme, where tutors come into the school direct from the industry to teach all there is to know about the film and television industry. Located in Wellington City, the Film School offers students a one year, full-time, Certificate in Film and Television Production; the aim of which is to turn out producers, directors and technical crews of the future; graduates who are well prepared to make a career in film and/or television. If you are interested in a career in information technology, Computer Power Plus offers eight highly regarded information technology qualifications. All are unique, flexible and provided in a self-paced learning environment. You take control of your learning, learning at your own pace with staff to assist you to achieve your study goals. You commit to attend regular sessions and each time you attend Computer Power Plus, you pick up exactly where you left off. Instructors are dedicated, professional and experienced. Computer Power Plus also offers a work placement service to students. Computer Power Plus, with campuses in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch is committed to students achieving real-world information technology qualifications. Over 90% of graduates from 2011 are already employed in the industry. Computer Power Plus is backed by a partnership between Whitireia New Zealand Limited and WelTec. The New Zealand Radio Training School, located in our Media Training Centre in Wellington City, and in our Auckland campus, offers students complete handson training in radio. Owned by Whitireia New Zealand Limited, the New Zealand Radio Training School offers study towards a Certificate in Commercial Broadcasting. This programme covers all the things you need to know for a career in commercial radio including; copywriting, programming and producing for radio, running promotions and live broadcasting. Students not only work in a classroom but also in purpose built studios designed to provide a complete radio experience. Professional tutors, all with comprehensive backgrounds in radio, offer students highly interactive learning opportunities, through practical study. The New Zealand Radio Training School keeps pace with the industry and in-turn, offers training in tune with industry wants. There are a wide variety of scholarships available to new and existing students studying at Whitireia.

Whitireia Foundation scholarships The Whitireia Foundation is a registered charitable trust that aims to promote knowledge, interest and support for the educational purposes and activities of Whitireia students. The foundation is pleased to offer a number of scholarships to Whitireia students who are studying full-time in 2013. Scholarships are awarded on the twin criteria of merit and perseverance to succeed, in spite of personal circumstances. Secondary School Leaver Fees scholarships Whitireia is pleased to offer Secondary School Leaver Fees scholarships to selected secondary schools in Northern Wellington, the Porirua Basin and Kāpiti Coast areas. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and is to assist with tuition costs, for the first year of study, on one of our multi-year diploma or degree programmes. Entry criteria for these scholarships, is as follows and applicants must: • Be over 16 years of age

Information & Enrolment Centre Our Information & Enrolment Centre (IEC) is the first point of contact for both prospective and current students. Located at our campuses in Porirua and Auckland, IEC provides programme information, assistance with our enrolment process, student ID cards, careers advice and fee payment facilities. Homestay assistance, insurance claim assistance and online visa renewal is available here for international students.

Library Our Library provides access to a wide range of resources, including books, journals, audio-visual items, newspapers, many online databases, ebooks, study spaces and computers. Information skills’ training is available. A distance library service is provided to eligible students.

Academic Support Students studying at our campuses in Porirua, Kāpiti, Wellington and by distance, can access study support through Poutama Academic Learning Services. Study support is available oneto-one, from a peer tutor, distance or in a small group. All services are confidential, are delivered by professional staff and are free. The study skills centre at our Auckland campus also provides learning advice

and assistance to students at every level of study. Assistance is given to students whose first language is not English by providing any academic help required. This service is also free and available oneto-one, working with individual lecturers by providing in-class study skills and language support or by peer tutoring.

Maori and Pacific Academic Support Mo te tautoko me te awhi – staff are available to support Māori and Pacific students with study or other issues.

Pacific community Liaison The Pacific Community Liaison team is responsible for engaging with our Pacific communities. Ethnic-specific staff liaise with the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga and other Pacific community groups.

Students with Disabilities The Academic Advisor (accessibility) works with students and staff to make reasonable accommodation for students with a disability.

Counselling Service A confidential, seven-day, 24-hour selfreferral, counselling service is provided off-campus by Vitae. Vitae, a professional company, provides Whitireia students with access to a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout

New Zealand. Whitireia students are entitled to three free counselling sessions per year. Our Auckland campus offers an onsite counsellor who is available by appointment.

Financial Support Confidential budgeting advice is available. This service also provides information on grants, scholarships and emergency funding.

Health Service A health nurse is available by appointment at our campus in Porirua. This service is free. Other health services available at our Porirua campus include a doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist and hearing therapist. You will be charged a minimal cost for these services. Medical appointments can be arranged for students studying at our campuses in Wellington, Kāpiti and Auckland.

Childcare Facility A fully licensed childcare centre is located at our Porirua campus. Spaces are limited so do enquire early if you wish to use this facility. Call +64 4 237 7842.

Students’ Association The Whitireia Independent Students’ Association (WISA) operates to serve the interests of students while studying at Whitireia. This is by means of

representation, liaison and advocacy. Entertainment and activities are provided by WISA from time-to-time, as they aim to provide students with an enjoyable and successful student experience. You can choose to join WISA, it is voluntary.

Polyshop

Whitireia has an International Student Support Co-ordinator and Student Counsellor available to provide pastoral care and support to international students while studying here.

Prescribed texts (at 10% discount) and second-hand texts are available at the onsite Polyshop at the Porirua campus. A full range of stationery at very competitive prices, greeting cards and overseas calling cards are also for sale. Other services include mobile phone recharging facilities and a drycleaning agency.

Visa and immigration services for international students

New Zealand host families are carefully chosen for students to stay with. Families will provide a single bedroom, two meals a day plus clean bed linen including towels at least twice a week. Our homestay co-ordinators work with international students to arrange accommodation requirements to suit individual needs.

Our Porirua and Auckland campuses have staff available to assist with visa and immigration requirements for new and existing students.

Apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz. You should do this well before your programme starts so it is processed before your study begins.

If you are an international student studying at Whitireia full-time at Level 5 or higher, you are able to work for 20 hours per week during the holidays.

Student loans and allowances are not available for international students.

How can I get my student visa renewed?

Apply to enrol either in person, by post or online. International students can also apply to enrol through an agent.

How long does it take to confirm my enrolment?

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve brought or sent us everything we need, it will usually take between two and five working days. Enrolment confirmation for international students will be sent back either directly to the applicant or through an agent, if this is how you enrolled.

What do I need to provide?

When do I pay my fees?

A completed Application to Enrol form, your birth certificate or passport plus any additional entry requirement information (such as a health declaration, references, police vetting, criminal convictions declaration, record of learning, academic transcripts/records) if applicable.

After you have been offered a place on your programme and you have confirmed your acceptance of this place, you can pay your fees.

International students also need to provide evidence of IELTS or equivalent English certificate.

After your enrolment has been completed, our Information & Enrolment Centre will organise it for you. You will need a student ID card to print, photocopy, access the library, the computer networks and other student support services at Whitireia.

Why do we ask for your birth certificate or passport?

We need proof of your legal name, date of birth, and citizenship or residency. If your name has changed, you will also need to provide proof of the change, e.g. a marriage certificate. International students must also provide proof of eligibility to study in New Zealand (visa and residency status). Can I bring a photocopy of my birth certificate?

Yes, if it has been verified (signed) by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP), or kaumÄ tua. We can also photocopy and verify your original documents for you.

How and when do I get my student ID card?

Can I decide to withdraw from part or all of my programme of study?

If you change your mind before your programme of study starts, please contact us. You will need to complete a Withdrawal form. Who do I contact if I have any queries?

Can I work while I study?

Current international students must apply to renew their student visa 1-2 months before the expiry date. Students should make contact with an International Student Adviser at our Information & Enrolment Centre, for assistance and advice on how to renew this visa online. Can I buy insurance through whitireia?

International students can apply through Whitireia for insurance. This insurance covers travel and medical.

If you are applying in person, please bring your birth certificate or passport with you. We will photocopy and return it to you. A verified copy is a document, which has been signed by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP) or kaumātua as being a true copy of the original. It’s best to apply early as places are limited. Notice must be received by the international enrolments team up to two weeks before your programme starts. An unconditional Offer of Place from the other institution will be required for the transfer of funds to be arranged. • If you are undertaking English and have extra weeks of prepaid study, you cannot be refunded but can be credited to another programme at Whitireia. • If you are undertaking English and reach the IELTS level required for degree study and wish to transfer to another institution, your remaining portion of fees (with 30% administration charge deducted) will be paid directly to that institution. An unconditional Offer of Place will be required for this transfer to be arranged. • If you are taking a semester-based programme and gain New Zealand permanent residency, you will not receive a refund of fees for the semester in which permanent residency is granted. However, in following semesters you will be treated as a New Zealand permanent resident and refunded any international fees paid for those semesters. • Exceptional circumstances of a compassionate nature, as approved by Whitireia, may necessitate you to withdraw from your programme. In these circumstances, the amount of fees refunded will be at the discretion of Whitireia.
