This programme is designed to provide Health Professionals with an integrated, supported theoretical and practical programme of study to ensure the development of specialty knowledge and skills required of a health professional working in the New Zealand context. The Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care can be completed over two years. All courses are 17 weeks in duration and each course is a combination of online and short block tutorials delivered at our Porirua campus.
COURSE INFORMATION HSC8605: Primary Mental Health Care (45 credits) This course offers students specialty knowledge and understanding of primary mental health care within a holistic framework. The purpose is to expand the student's ability to relate key concepts of recovery focused mental health care to their primary care setting, while developing advanced assessment and decision making skills. Each student will explore their own understanding of self and others, and inter-sectorial care, and the impact that they make on the health outcomes of people experiencing mental health illness in primary health care. Whitireia postgraduate programmes have a flexible learning approach with a mix of block courses and online learning. Distance students receive a full range of support including distance library services and online learning support.
QUALIFICATION Graduates gain 45 credits towards the Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Work completed as part of this programme may contribute evidence for use in Professional Development Recognition Programmes (PDRP). Successful graduates may also gain credits towards Master’s studies.

Domestic: Registered health professional with current New Zealand practicing certificate, Bachelor degree or equivalent; employment in relevant clinical service for a minimum of three days per week

International: IELTS 7.0 in each band
