New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) Mental Health and Addiction Support Strand


The New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) [approval pending] is a Level 4 one year programme which assists students to develop knowledge and skills to work effectively in health and social community based roles. This programme focuses on promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing, and building health literacy, of people, whānau and/or family, and populations. This programme uses blended learning methods for delivery that combines face to face, online delivery and work-integrated learning. Most students will be in employment or voluntary work relevant to their programme of study and blended learning provides increased flexibility for a study/work/life blend. Whitireia will be offering the Mental Health and Addiction Support strand which consists of the following four courses: Course

Aim

Whānaungatanga Building Relationships

This course develops skills and knowledge to enable students to build effective professional relationships with people, families and whānau, and community networks in a health or social service setting. Students will demonstrate an understanding of socio-cultural and historical factors that impact on health and/or social outcomes. Students will reflect on their use of appropriate communication strategies that are respectful of diversity and that demonstrate working in partnership with others.

Safety and Practice in Mental Health and Addiction Support 30 Credits Semester 1

Understanding Mental Health and Addiction 30 Credits Semester 2

This course develops skills and knowledge to enable the student to provide culturally responsive care and advocate appropriately. The student will demonstrate an understanding of their role in quality improvement and its impact on improving health and wellbeing. The student will reflect on their own personal leadership and their ability to influence effective teamwork to work alongside and promote selfmanagement and health literacy people, families and whānau. This course develops skills and knowledge that enables students to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of people, whānau and families engaged in a mental health and addiction setting. Students will demonstrate an understanding of advocacy relevant to working with people, whānau and/or family accessing mental health addiction services. Students will reflect on ethical and legal implications related to their role. This course develops the skills and knowledge to enable the student to demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a mental health and addiction support worker. Students will demonstrate an understanding of human development and health conditions relevant to mental health and addiction practice. Students will reflect on the tools and strategies used to foster hope, support recovery and build resilience.

Graduates gain the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) Level 4 on successful completion of all course requirements within their strand.

Graduates of this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to be employed in a range of roles working alongside people, whānau and/or family across health and wellbeing sectors.

Graduates can also progress to further qualifications delivered by Whitireia such as the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing Māori, Bachelor of Nursing Pacific, Bachelor of Social Work, and Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic).

At Whitireia, we are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the learning needs of individual students. These include the Poutama Learning Skills Centre where oneto-one and small group assistance, peer tutoring, workshops and study skills sessions on a variety of topics, and online material are available. To increase our students' chances of success, we provide support for our students in other ways such as access to financial advice, counselling, health services, childcare facilities, and a service for students who have a disability, illness, or health problems that may impact on their studies. Māori and Pacific liaison staff are available to provide pastoral care for Māori and Pacific students, and information on alternative support networks and grants.

NCEA Level 1 or evidence of equivalent skills and knowledge AND employment or voluntary work in related field for a minimum of three days per week. International Students: IELTS 6.0 with no band lower than 5.5. Suitability Attend an interview to determine suitability and preparedness for tertiary study (suitability will also be assessed with reference to: employer’s letter of support, referee reports and health declaration.

The Programme Coordinator will review all applications. Applications are processed in date order.

The closing date for applications is Friday 02 December 2016. will only be processed if places are still available.

Applications received after this date

Give the referee reports to two people who are willing to be your referees; one must be your current employer. Ask them to complete the forms and either return them to yourself, mail them directly to the Polytechnic at the address below or email to health@whitireia.ac.nz within 10 days. Please note your application cannot be processed until both referee reports and your letter of support from your employer have been received.

We will confirm receipt of your application. Please note that if your application is incomplete, it will be returned to you.
