BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS (TOI POUTAMA) Explore Māori art through learning whakairo (carving) or raranga (weaving)

PROGRAMME INFORMATION Engage in the traditional Māori arts of raranga (weaving) or whakairo (carving) to advance skills and knowledge base required to create works of art within your chosen field. Students engaged in this study shall explore traditional practices and techniques of raranga or whakairo, and also gain complimentary skills in business, curatorship, exhibition practices and taonga management. Graduates from this programme will be able to: >> demonstrate excellence in their chosen art field of weaving or carving >> demonstrate an understanding of tikanga Māori through application of their art practice >> contribute to the revival and survival of ancient Māori art practice >> contribute to the evolution of Māori art through individual creative processes and artistic expression >> apply relevant Māori language (vocabulary, terminology, whakataukī, karakia, and kīwaha) to their major discipline >> identify appropriate relationships within the toi community, to include marae, hapū and iwi and demonstrate effective engagement >> engage in arts entrepreneurship with confidence

FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS

Gain practical, hands-on experience working in our on-site training café.

Graduates can apply to enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Applied Arts, the Graduate Diploma in Applied Arts (Arts Management) at Whitireia, or enrol in teacher training study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates will have the required skills to pursue a career as a self-employed professional artist, undertake marae or iwi projects, and work within a gallery, museum or Māori design industries.

This programme is delivered as a full-time course to cover approximately 15 hours per week in class (tutor contact), and a further 15 hours per week for independent study.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Weekly: Tuesday/Wednesday, 8.30am – 5pm

Domestic: Whitireia degree entry requirements or equivalent study/work experience. Knowledge and/or skill base of raranga, whakairo or other art forms with evidence presented within a portfolio. An interview shall take place.

Fortnightly: Saturdays, 8.30am – 5pm

International: entry IELTS: 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5)
