Foundation Studies

The New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation Level 3 and/or Level 4 provides an initial pathway for students entering tertiary study, in preparation for further qualification at levels 5-7 (diplomas and degrees). It also provides a foundation of skills and knowledge which students take through their academic life. We offer two strands, Health Science and Social Science. Information about the strands can be found on pages 3 and 4. The strands are currently offered at the following campuses:  

Health Science – offered at Porirua, Kapiti, Wellington and Petone (WelTec campus). Social Science – offered at Porirua and Wellington.

Semester Two enrolments in both Level 3 and 4 are available, but the number of places available may be limited. The programme provides a supportive atmosphere to give all students every possible opportunity to succeed and our tutors are well qualified and committed to encouraging quality student learning. A range of other learning services support the certificate programme to ensure that you have the best possible chance of success, whatever your background. These include an excellent Library, with computers and internet access, learning and language skills support and peer tutoring. As well as tutorial support, the Polytechnic provides many other personal support services, including Counselling (Kaiwhakatakoto whakaaro), Health (Hauora), Māori and Pacific Island Liaison Officers, Financial Advice and a Child Care Centre. We want you to succeed and we will do all we can to support you in your efforts. The programme content and teaching is guided by an Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from the tertiary programmes that successful students join, and both present and past students. This committee checks that the certificate covers relevant and useful skills and knowledge for the targeted tertiary programmes. This ensures that you have the best chance of entry into these diplomas and degrees following success in the certificate.
