Students at the Whitireia Performance Centre get to work with some of New Zealand’s finest and widely recognised professionals who put their energies into developing them to their utmost. They have a wealth of experience and most are still working in the industry – their knowledge and skill base is current and relevant to today’s teaching. Students are given the best possible training to ensure they leave as well rounded, confident and dynamic performers.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION This programme is designed to equip students with a high level of proficiency and the essential musical theatre skills of singing, acting and dancing while providing the opportunity for practical performing experience. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 10-15 hours out of polytechnic work each week. This time is self-regulated and will be spent in the research and completion of assignments, learning of songs, rehearsal, background study of topics and special projects. AUDITION INFORMATION
To be eligible for study on this programme, students will have had at least two years singing training at secondary school or by private tuition as well as some theatrical performance experience.
Appraisal of students for programme places is by audition. Students are required to prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs and a one minute monologue from a text (not self devised).
FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS
The process includes a group workshop in order to appraise group singing, dance ability, performance skills and group interaction. There is also an interview with an audition panel.
Graduates can apply to enrol in the Whitireia Bachelor of Applied Arts (Performing Arts) programme at year 3 or further professional training.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates will have the skills to go on to become professional actors, dancers, singers and musical theatre performers
QUALIFICATION Graduates gain the Diploma in Performing Arts (Singing)
Attention is given to vocal techniques, quality of performance skills, musical ability, ability to work as part of a group, health (a current medical certificate will be required), fitness, demonstrated commitment to study and appreciation of programme outline and aims.
