BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS (MUSIC) Play an instrument as a soloist and part of a band. Study theory, composition, arranging, instrumental studies, band workshops, performance, recording and production. Learn about the music business and develop relevant communication skills.

This programme offers training to musicians wanting to be leaders in the New Zealand Music industry. It offers three specialities: >> Music performance >> Music creation and composition >> Music recording and production

PROGRAMME INFORMATION Year one students select an instrument, perform in groups and study composition, music recording and production Year two students continue to specialise with their instrument and further develop their skills as musicians Year three students research and create a major body of work Core modules covered are: >>

Contextual studies with a particular emphasis on MÄ ori, Pacific and contemporary music

>>

Creative enterprise with an emphasis on the skills to develop ideas and creativity into commercial success

>>

Professional Studies with an emphasis on how the music business works.

Music modules covered over the three years of the degree include: >> Instrument studies

Develop the skills and knowledge to begin a career in the music industry

>> Group performance >> Composition >> Music theory >> Recording >> Music production >> Improvisation theory and practice >> Analysing and rearranging music

QUALIFICATION

Students will learn in rooms designed for the teaching of rock music and include:

Graduates gain the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music). Students who successfully complete and pass two years of study can exit with a Diploma in Rock, Jazz and Commercial Music.

>> Performance room equipped with lighting, PA, projector and large screen and performance equipment

>> Fully equipped band rehearsal rooms, with keyboards, drum kits, amps and PA

FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS Graduates can apply to enrol in the Graduate Certificate/ Diploma in Applied Arts at Whitireia

Domestic: Whitireia degree academic entry requirements: evidence of suitability based on interview and audition, theory and aural test International: IELTS 6.0 (no band lower than 5.5)
