Outdoor adventure is all about heading into the wild places of New Zealand and confidently using skills, energy and determination. It is about making good decisions. Outdoor adventure provides the opportunity to explore personal goals and the skills to start a career in an exciting, challenging and rewarding industry. Students will learn about who they are and how to feel confident in the powerful natural environment. This programme provides students with an incredible year for personal growth and professional development.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION >> Bush craft learn essential skills for surviving in the bush. Go on tramps that take you to remote and inspiring places, sleeping in mountain huts, tents or simple bivvies. Learn about plant and animal species, make fires, learn survival techniques, navigation and how to work as a team. >> White water students will have the opportunity to increase their kayaking skills when the rain comes and the river swells! Start on flat water and learn the eskimo roll then progress to the Hutt and ĹŒtaki rivers to experience the white water, negotiate rapids and carry out rescues. >> Mountaineering students will spend two weeks on Mt Ruapehu learning the basic skills of moving and surviving in snow and ice, as well as how to avoid avalanches and what to do if you or another party get caught in one. Mountaineering is often one of the peak experiences on the certificate programme and will certainly leave students wanting more.
Learn to kayak, rock climb, abseil, camp, tramp and survive
>> Rock climbing students will be learning the art of climbing. Learn rope, technical and personal skills and keep a climbing partner safe in the vertical world, climbing rock faces they never thought possible. Wellington is home to some great rock climbing crags, holding challenges for beginner and intermediate climbers. Experience the internationally recognised climbing areas of Wharepapa and Taupo. >> Sea kayak students will develop their skills in sea kayaking and explore the wild Wellington coastline and multiday expeditions on Lake Taupo. >> Adventure based learning students will learn games and problem solving activities that stretch their capacity to work as an individual or team. Start out as a participant and progressively learn how to run these sessions for other groups in the community.

QUALIFICATION
>> Personal development students will increase self- awareness, confidence and skills for living and work alongside people from a range of backgrounds.
Graduates gain the Certificate in Outdoor Adventure.
>> Outdoor first aid students will gain an essential first aid qualification for working in the outdoors.

>> Risk management students will be involved in decision making throughout this programme. Learn to recognise potential dangers, analyse situations and act appropriately to minimise risk. Whitireia is also an assessment centre for the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association (NZOIA).

FURTHER STUDY OPTIONS Students can apply to enrol in the Diploma in Outdoor Adventure.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates will have the knowledge and skills to work in roles such as an Outdoor Education Instructor, Adventure Guide, Outdoor Youth Worker, School Outdoor Educator or roles in the travel and tourism industry.
FEES Current fees are available on the Whitireia website. Limited fee free Youth Guarantee places may be available.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Domestic: Evidence of suitability for the programme and relevant outdoor experience, based on submitted log and interview International: IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0)
