Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care Social and community Work This programme reflects current and developing researchbased practice, in relation to health care delivery.

This programme is designed to provide social workers with an integrated, supported theoretical and practical programme of study to ensure the development of specialty knowledge and skills required of a health professional working in the New Zealand context. The Postgraduate Certificate in Specialty Care can be completed over two years. All papers are 17 weeks in duration and each paper is a combination of online and short block tutorials delivered at our Porirua campus. All papers are NZQA accredited at Level 8 and approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand. One Whitireia Level 8 postgraduate paper is equivalent to a 30 credit paper.

paper information Advanced Social Work Practice HSC8616 (45 credits) This paper offers social work practitioners the opportunity to extend skills and knowledge of professional practice. The purpose is to increase the student’s ability to relate key social practice competencies to an advanced professional practice of mentoring, coaching and peer development (MCPD). Students critically analyse their practice in their own professional setting and those responsibilities that support and develop the ethical and professional practice of beginner social workers. A strong focus of the paper is the development of professional leadership through research and scholarship. This paper leads into and supports the learning prescribed in the ‘Social and Community Work Leadership' paper.

Whitireia postgraduate programmes have a flexible learning approach with a mix of block courses and online learning. As distance students, there is a full range of support available including distance library services and online learning support.

The purpose is to extend the student’s ability to draw on his/her practice knowledge and experience and a wide range of theoretical frameworks to inform the development of social and community work leadership. Each student will explore their own understanding of self and others, and the impact they can make to the social and economic outcomes of their clients, the organisations they work in and their communities.
