This clinically focused programme supports nurses working in community and primary health care settings, including aged care, to extend their knowledge and enhance their skills. This programme consists of two courses: the compulsory Primary Health Care and Health Promotion and one course chosen from the following strands: Population and Personal Health; Health of the Older Adult; or Well Child/ Tamariki Ora.
PROGRAMME INFORMATION HSC8501: Primary Health Care and Health Promotion (60 credits) (compulsory) This course explores theoretical and evidence based knowledge relevant to primary health and community practice emphasising a health-promotive approach. The primary health context, community assessment, the impact of the social determinants on health and nursing practice to address disparity through promoting health are major themes. Content includes: >> Primary health care as speciality practice >> Social determinants of health >> Health promotion/health literacy >> Community assessment >> MÄ ori and Pacific health >> Nursing scholarship
Whitireia postgraduate programmes have a flexible learning approach with a mix of block courses and online learning. Distance students receive a full range of support including distance library services and online learning support.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Domestic: Registered nurse with a current New Zealand practising certificate, Bachelor degree or equivalent and relevant clinical employment for a minimum of two days per week (15 hours) International: IELTS 7.0 in each band or equivalent
