Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships A government-led training initiative whereby Pasifika Church Ministers identify potential trades trainees, and together with the polytechnics, select and mentor scholarship recipients. Scholarship recipients receive free tuition for one year at either WelTec or Whitireia. If you’re interested speak with your Pasifika Church Minister.
WELTEC TRADES CARPENTRY Certificate in Carpentry 34 week programme commences February and July in Petone, and other locations to be advised. Learn a mix of theory and practical skills to enhance your employment options. On WelTec’s building site, you’ll learn to construct floor and wall framing, fix roofing, cladding and internal linings, fit windows and hang doors. Develop hand tool and power tool skills, safe work practices and increase your knowledge of building codes, construction standards and regulations. LEVEL 3 National Certificate in Carpentry Combine employment and on-job practical learning with class tutorials, workshop instruction and regular on-site assessment by WelTec Carpentry tutors. You will be guided through the theory requirements with part-time study offered in the evenings. Put the theory into practice in your own workplace, supported by our teaching staff with on-site visits with you and your employer. To enter into this programme you will need to be in full-time employment working on either residential or commercial construction sites. LEVEL 4
PAINTING AND DECORATING
Certificate in Pre-Trade Painting* 17 week programme commences February. An introduction to the painting industry. You will develop skills and an understanding of scaffolding, surface preparation, brush and roller techniques for applying surface coatings and professional planning and organisation. You will undertake practical project work to learn how to complete a job to the highest standard. LEVEL 2
Certificate in Applied Decorating Skills* 17 week programme commences July. An introduction to the decorating industry. You will gain skills in hanging wallpaper and friezes, specialised and vinyl wall coverings, spray coating and decorative colour effects and glazing. A work experience component is designed to reinforce learning and skills developed in the programme. LEVEL 3 *You will be required to enrol in both the Certificate in Pre-Trade Painting and the Certificate in Applied Decorating Skills.
National Certificate in Painting Combine employment and on-the-job practical learning with class tutorials, workshop instruction and regular on- site assessment by WelTec Painting and Decorating tutors. You will be guided through the theory requirements with part-time study offered in the evenings or via a distance learning component. Put the theory into practice in your own workplace supported by our teaching staff, and day release or block courses at WelTec’s Petone campus. Options allow for areas of specialisation and further skill development. To enter into this programme, you will need to be in full- time employment in the painting industry. LEVEL 3 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Certificate in Mechanical Engineering* Starts February. 1 year full-time. Gain skills that will allow you to build, maintain or operate equipment and plant used in the mechanical engineering industry. LEVEL 3 Certificate in Engineering – Fabrication* Starts February. 1 year full-time. LEVEL 3 * The pre-requisite for Mechanical Engineering Programmes at Level 3 is the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering Level 2.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Offered as evening classes and a block course. These qualifications lead to registration as an Electrician. LEVEL 3. The pre-requisite for Level 3 is the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 2.
BRICK AND BLOCKLAYING, AND LANDSCAPING
Certificate in Brick and Blocklaying* 17 week programme commences February. Designed for those wanting to learn skills in bricklaying and blocklaying. You will learn how to develop and draw bricklaying plans, mix mortar and use bricklaying tools and machinery to design and construct a range of practical projects in our purpose-built workshops. LEVEL 3
Certificate in Landscape Construction* 17 week programme commences July. Develop the skills and knowledge to construct various hard surface and landscape features and advise clients on their regulatory obligations. You will learn safe work practices, hand tool, power tool and machinery skills. You will also learn to develop landscape projects using timber, brick, block, stone and concrete. LEVEL 4 *You will be required to enrol in both the Certificate in Brick and Blocklaying and the Certificate in Landscape Construction.
WHITIREIA TRADES CARPENTRY Certificate in Carpentry
One year full time programme commences February and July. Offered from the Whitireia Industry Training Centre in Elsdon, Porirua, and from Kapiti. During the programme students cover a significant portion of the theory from the Level 4 National Certificate in Carpentry, develop skills in using hand tools and power tools, and participate in building a house. Graduates of the programme are well prepared to commence work as an apprentice carpenter, or work in a related trade. LEVEL 3
PLUMBING, DRAINLAYING, GASFITTING AND ROOFING Certificate in Plumbing, Drainlaying, Gasfitting and Roofing One year full time programme commences February and July. Offered from the Whitireia Industry Training Centre in Elsdon, Porirua. During the programme students gain a wide range of knowledge and skills across the four trades of Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying & Roofing, including working on real life projects and participate in building a house. Graduates of the programme are well prepared to commence work as an apprentice plumber, gasfitter, drainlayer or roofer, or to work in a related trade. LEVEL 3
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Certificate in Electrical Engineering One year full time programme commences February. Offered from the Whitireia Industry Training Centre in Elsdon, Porirua. During the programme students gain a wide range of knowledge and skills across the electrical industry and participate in building a house. Graduates of the programme will be well prepared to start work as apprentice electricians or work in a related trade. LEVEL 3
HORTICULTURE AND LANDSCAPING Certificate in Horticulture and Landscaping One year full time programme commences February and July. Offered from the Whitireia Industry Training Centre in Elsdon, Porirua. During the programme students gain a wide range of knowledge and skills, including knowledge of plants, soils, plant pests and diseases, propagation, and hard landscaping. Graduates of the programme are well prepared to commence work on Horticulture and Landscaping projects, or to work in a related trade. LEVEL 3
CIVIL CONSTRUCTION Certificate in Civil Construction Introductory Skills One year full time programme commences February. Offered from the Whitireia Industry Training Centre in Elsdon, Porirua. During the programme students gain a wide range of knowledge and skills across the Civil Construction trades, including: maintaining small plant and equipment, temporary traffic management, knowledge of graders, loaders and scrapers, and gaining wheels, rollers and tracks driver licence endorsements. Work experience is a key component of the programme. Graduates of the programme are well prepared to commence work in roading and other infrastructure projects, or to work in a related trade. LEVEL 3

You will need to provide proof of your residency status so please bring along a copy of your birth certificate or passport. If you have an academic record from previous study undertaken, please bring this along also e.g. your NZQA Annual Result Notice
