NEW HEALTH EDUCATION FACILITY OPENED

Our new health education training facility named Wikitoria Katene, the name gifted to our previous health building by NgÄ ti Toa in 2008, has been officially opened by the Hon Tony Ryall. Wikitoria Katene replaces a number of pre-fabricated buildings that have been part of the Porirua campus since it opened 27 years ago. At a cost of around $17m the facility includes a footprint of 3817m2 with a number of state-of-the-art features including: technology for 21st century teaching, open plan administration and tutoring areas, use of sustainable and environmental construction technology methods including solar hot water, rain harvesting, natural light spaces with the ability to naturally vent most classrooms, double glazed windows, highly insulated roof technology, floating floor slabs with in-floor heating, concrete structures to minimise maintenance and store solar energy; inter-room sliding doors allowing for flexible teaching spaces and greater

efficiency – rooms can go from groups of 40 students to groups of over 100. The building is fully accessible inside and out with architecture that integrates into our landscape well. The extensive artwork throughout the building on concrete columns, tilt slabs and windows was all designed by former Whitireia Whakairo tutor James Molnar. Over 1000 nursing and paramedic students will use the facility including the new world class simulation suites. This new facility endorses the commitment that we have to training and educating health professionals of which we are national leaders. This is the largest building project undertaken in the history of Whitireia.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH WELTEC

Over the last couple of years, we have been working closely with Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) through our strategic partnership arrangement. As part of this arrangement, we now have a single Combined Council (pictured right) to govern and guide a consistent strategic direction for tertiary level vocational education in the Wellington region. The first priority of the Combined Council was to identify key projects for the partnership. Nine have been identified and will form the strategic direction. The work that both institutions have completed on these projects throughout 2012 will provide the essential pillars for success throughout 2013. The first year of this partnership has been challenging and rewarding. Staff have embraced the change and worked collaboratively to achieve positive results.

NEW CAMPUS LOCATION WORKING WELL FOR KAPITI Whitireia in Kāpiti has been operating from its new campus on the corner of Milne Drive and Kāpiti Road for over a year now. February last year saw the official opening of the campus which provides tertiary education study opportunities for students in the Kāpiti region. Campus and student life are now firmly cemented at the new location. Around 290 students studied at the campus last year with around 300 expected this year. The new campus is proving popular with students, its central location and modern learning environment are making this an attractive place for local students to come and study.
