Whitireia Community Polytechnic (Whitireia) is a government owned and funded tertiary institute of technology, known for its high student success rates and culturally diverse student body. Established in 1986, on the shores of the Porirua harbour, Whitireia has grown to become a tertiary institution of choice for over 8,500 students (over 4,740 equivalent full-time students), who study at one of our contemporary campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Porirua and Kāpiti. In 2015, over 100 programmes of study are being offered to students, covering certificate, diploma, degree, postgraduate and master’s levels. All programmes have been developed in conjunction with industry to offer excellent applied qualifications.

16mm film to digital, the film school now boasts a state-of-the-art ArriAlexa camera for training and filming projects, a high-end digital camera closest to 35mm film and in line with cinema and feature filmmaking. The New Zealand Film and Television School is the only industry-run school of its kind in New Zealand. It is unique with its visiting tutor programme where tutors come into the school direct from industry to teach all there is to know about the film and television industry. With the recent shift from

Located in Wellington City, the Film School offers students a one year, full-time, Certificate in Introduction to Film and Television Production. The aim of which is to turn out producers, directors and technical crews of the future; graduates who are well prepared to make a career in film and/

The New Zealand Radio Training School is located in our Wellington City campus and in our Auckland City campus. It offers students complete hands-on training in radio. Owned by Whitireia New Zealand Limited, the New Zealand Radio Training School is one of the most respected radio training schools in New Zealand. Two programmes of study are offered; the National Certificate in Radio (Foundation Skills) and Diploma in Radio Journalism (Broadcasting), covering all the things students need to know for a career in commercial radio including; copywriting, audio production, radio sales, podcasting, promotions, multimedia and live broadcasting. Students can choose from a range of electives including radio documentaries, creative broadcasting or industry internships (where available). Students not only study in a classroom but also in purpose built studios designed to provide a complete radio experience. If you are interested in a career in information technology, Computer Power Plus offers seven highly regarded information technology qualifications ranging from certificate to advanced diploma level. Intakes are weekly and students can study either part-time or full-time. Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships Whitireia is pleased to offer Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships to students at selected secondary schools. Each scholarship is valued at up to $4,000 and assists with tuition costs for the first year of study on one of our multi-year diploma or degree programmes.

Publishing Scholarships Scholarships are available for students studying publishing at Whitireia. These include:

dd Be over 16 years of age

Mason Publishing Scholarship This scholarship is for students studying publishing at a tertiary education provider in New Zealand. Applications close on the 31 January each year. The scholarship is awarded to the successful recipient for the year in which they apply, and it contributes to tuition fees for one academic year.

dd Be a school leaver from one of the selected secondary schools

Entry criteria is as follows; applicants must:

dd Have been in full-time study for six months prior to making an application

dd Be studying or intending to study publishing at a tertiary level

dd Be a New Zealand citizen or have permanent New Zealand residency

dd Be able to demonstrate particular financial need

dd Be accepted into a Whitireia multiyear diploma or degree programme

Te Reo Māori Scholarship

Entry criteria is as follows; applicants must:

The Whitireia Te Reo Māori Scholarship is available for students fluent in reo Māori, with a passion for language and a commitment to a career in publishing. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 and is paid towards tuition fees for one year of study on a Whitireia publishing programme. Applications close on 30 November each year. Entry criteria is as follows; applicants must:

Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships Māori and Pasifika Trades Training Scholarships is a government-led training initiative whereby scholarships are granted to members of Māori and Pacific Island communities. If you are aged 18-34, of Māori or Pasifika descent, you can apply for a Trades Training Scholarship. Scholarship recipients will receive free tuition for one year. AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS STUDYING AT WHITIREIA.

Academic Support Students studying at our campuses in Porirua, KÄ piti, Wellington and by distance, can access study support through Poutama Academic Learning Services. Academic support is available in classes, small groups, from a peer tutor, one-to-one and through our online Moodle site. All services are delivered by professional staff and are free. The study skills centre at our Auckland campus also provides learning advice and assistance to students at every level of study.

Careers Advice Our Career Consultant is located at our Porirua campus. They are available to provide careers support and advice to students. Call 0800 944 847 to make an appointment

Childcare Centre A fully licensed childcare centre is located at our Porirua campus. Spaces are limited so an early enquiry is recommended. Call 04 237 7842 to find out more

Counselling Service

Library

A confidential, seven-day, 24-hour self-referral, counselling service is provided off-campus by Vitae. Vitae is a professional company that provides Whitireia students with access to a team of independent counsellors and psychologists throughout New Zealand. Students are entitled to three free counselling sessions per year.

Our library provides access to a wide range of resources including books, journals, audio-visual items, newspapers, many online databases, eBooks, study spaces and computers. Information skills training is available. A distance library service is provided to eligible students.

Financial Support

Prescribed texts (at 10% discount) and second-hand texts are available at our on-site Polyshop at our Porirua campus. A full range of stationery at very competitive prices, greeting cards and overseas calling cards are available for sale also. Other services include mobile phone recharging facilities and a drycleaning agency.

Confidential budgeting advice is available. This service also provides information on grants, scholarships and emergency funding.

Health Service A health nurse is available by appointment at our Porirua campus. This service is free. Other health services available at our Porirua campus include a doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist and hearing therapist. There is a minimal cost for these services. Medical appointments can be arranged for students studying at our campuses in Wellington, KÄ piti and Auckland.

Information & Enrolment Our Information & Enrolment team are the first point of contact for both prospective and current students. Located at our Porirua campus, the team provides programme information, assistance with enrolment process, student ID cards, careers advice and fee payment facilities. Staff are also available at our other campuses to help with any questions you may have about any of our programmes, or studying with us.

Polyshop

Student Hub The Student Hub is a service and a space for students. The service provides free and independent advocacy and advice for all students. It is also a place to get involved in the student voice where students can put forward their ideas about the teaching and learning, events and activities or anything to do with the experience at Whitireia. On the Porirua campus, it is space where students can relax, get a free hot drink, browse second hand clothes, grab a free book, get sports equipment, laminate or bind a presentation, use a computer, use a phone or just talk to someone who will listen. Student spaces are available at all our campuses and other campuses can access the Student Hub services via phone, email or text.

Pacific Students

The Academic Advisor (accessibility) works with students and staff to make reasonable accommodation for students with a disability.

Our Academic Student Support Coordinator (Māori) will respond to Māori students concerns. Advice and support is offered across a range of areas including educational, cultural, spiritual, economic, social and sometimes personal growth; they can also act as a mentor.

Our Pacific Academic Student Success Coordinator provides academic and cultural support to Pacific students. Programmes and networks have been developed to support and enhance academic success of Pacific students.

Transport There is a bus service that runs between our Porirua campus and the WelTec campus in Petone; the Route 97 Polytech Link. For information on the route, timetable and cost, check out www.metlink.org.nz

Ako Ake Café is a dedicated study space for Māori students, located at our Porirua campus. The café provides the opportunity to interact with other Māori students.

Young Students Moving from secondary school to a polytechnic can be a big change. Whitireia have setup a number of support services to help young people to make the successful transition and to enjoy their learning experience.

Frequently asked questions How do I find out about programmes? Information about what we offer can be found by checking out www.whitireia.ac.nz, by calling us on 0800 944 847 or by visiting any of our campuses

How do I apply to enrol? Apply to enrol either in person or by post.

What do I need to provide? A completed Application to Enrol form, your birth certificate or passport plus any additional entry requirement information (such as health declaration, references, police vetting, criminal convictions declaration, record of learning, academic transcripts/records) if applicable.

Why do we ask for your birth certificate or passport? We need proof of your legal name, date of birth and citizenship or residency. If your name has changed you will also need to provide proof of the change e.g. marriage certificate.

Can I bring a photocopy of my birth certificate? Yes, if it has been verified (signed) by a solicitor, Justice of the Peace (JP) or kaumātua. We can also photocopy and verify your original documents for you.

How do I get a student loan or allowance? Apply online at www.studylink.govt.nz. You should do this well before your programme starts so it’s processed in plenty of time.

How long does it take to confirm my enrolment? If you’ve brought or sent us everything we need, it will usually take between two and five working days.

When do I pay my fees? After you have been offered a place on your programme and you have confirmed your acceptance, you can pay your fees.

How and when do I get my student ID card? After your enrolment has been completed, visit our Information & Enrolment team and they’ll organise it for you. You will need a student ID card to print, photocopy, access the library, the computer networks and other student support services at Whitireia.

Can I decide to withdraw from part or all, of my programme of study? If you change your mind before your programme of study starts, please contact us. You will need to complete a Withdrawal form.

Community & other education links Pacific Community Liaison The Pacific Community Liaison team based at our Porirua campus, is responsible for engaging with Pacific communities. Ethnic-specific staff liaise with Cook Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Tonga, and other Pacific community groups.

Porirua Language Project Incorporated The Porirua Language project aims to provide quality adult learning in literacy skills and English as a second language to meet the needs of the multi-cultural community in Porirua. For more information call 04 237 5283

222 Willis is a new student accommodation complex in Wellington city; it welcomed the first intake of students in 2014. The complex comprises six floors with 280 beds. It is configured into a mix of studio, two bedroom and four bedroom apartments. Each apartment is comfortably furnished and has its own bathroom. Bedrooms come complete with a bed, chair, desk, wardrobe, shelves, noticeboards and blinds. Wi-Fi is available in all rooms and power is included in the rental costs. There is a kitchen in each apartment with a cooktop, fridge, microwave and storage space.

222 Willis is owned by WelTec Student Accommodation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wellington Institute of Technology.

Residents will enjoy regular activities held in the communal events centre and BBQ area. There is a shared TV lounge and group study space to enjoy. The facility provides a secure and managed environment with live in staff and a 24/7 emergency line.
