Whitworth Admissions Look Book: 2021-22

You have worked hard to get to this point. But no matter how much you can do on your own, relationships matter. When you become a Whitworth student, this will become even more clear. You will find a caring Christian community ready to support you and mentor you, no matter your faith background. Whitworth sets itself apart by the relationships we share. We are bound together through our mutual commitment to ask tough questions, engage with diverse perspectives and search fearlessly for answers wherever they may be found. Through these connections and experiences, you can become who you are meant to be, in your career, in your community, and throughout your life.

From this point on.

Connection with Direction.

It starts with people. The greatest opportunity Whitworth offers is connection – our community – and the promise that you don’t have to go it alone. We are with you as you discern your calling, connect to a career, and discover who you are meant to be.

The best professors (we mean it, and “U.S. News” agrees!) Whitworth professors will become some of your most trusted mentors who will help you navigate your college road map, invite you to join them in research, and be a sounding board for whatever is on your mind. Grab a cup of coffee and ask them about the last book they have read or their thoughts on the latest Marvel movie. (Through our Dine With a Mind program, the coffee’s on us!)

Career advisors Our career services staff can connect you to local, national and international internships and jobs, as well as to alumni who are working in careers you’re interested in. Through our SET SAIL program (Student Employment Training for Successful Advancement in Life), you’ll receive practical and interactive training for career readiness, along with interpersonal skills that will set you apart.

CAREER READINESS

Lifelong friends Meeting people who really “get” you is one of the most important parts of your college experience, and the best friendships make you feel seen and help you grow. Outside of classes, here are a few places to build your network of friends: Residence life: Live on campus in one of 10 residence halls or 21 Whitworth Neighborhood homes.

Intramurals: More than half of Whitworth students participate in intramural sports, like Ultimate Frisbee and basketball.

NCAA Division III teams: The Pirates compete in 21 sports and have had the best overall record in the Northwest Conference for 12 years in a row.

ASWU chartered clubs: Connect with 40-plus student clubs, depending on your interest, or start your own!

Campus ministry: Meet up with friends at chapel every Tuesday and Thursday (we don’t require attendance, but it’s often standing-room only), or join a Life Group to deepen relationships.

The arts: Students of all majors participate in more than 20 instrumental and vocal ensembles, and multiple theatre events and art exhibits. Study abroad/away: Form strong bonds as you experience new places and cultures with your peers and professors.

“Whitworth has connected me with a lot of people, and I am continuously growing because of the impact they have had on me. My advisor, Dr. Abbey in the health sciences department, has had a significant impact on me. She has been guiding me by giving helpful advice, giving me an opportunity to be her TA, and connecting me with resources at Whitworth to gain more experience. I am thankful for that.”

Expand your network.

A Whitworth education helps you see the bigger picture and develop skills that will be relevant to careers today and decades from now. It connects you to people and cultures around the world and launches you toward a life of leadership and service, wherever you land.

Anything but “general” Whitworth’s foundational shared curriculum, Whitworth Inq, is all about helping you connect what you’re learning to your life and career. This includes mental health and wellness as a key part of that foundation. Beyond Whitworth’s 100-plus majors and programs, you may also choose to design your own major based on your academic interests and career goals.

Impressive research Whitworth students are looking for cures for celiac disease, researching the connections between epilepsy and depression, and using 3D printers to create microdevices, among many other projects. Ph.D.-level Whitworth professors are eager for you to join them in the journey of making new discoveries in ongoing research that affects our understanding of the world, and of our own lives.

The real world starts now Service-learning and internships are built into the requirements of many of our academic programs. There’s no better way to get to know a community, or a career field, than by actually working in it. Plus, many extracurriculars are designed to prepare you with the skills you’ll need in the future – the Student Investment Group, Physics & Engineering Collective, speech-and-debate program, Women in Finance club, studentrun public relations agency and Teachers of Tomorrow club are just a few.

More pins on your map Unforgettable experiences await. Choose from study abroad programs in 65 countries, or from nearly a dozen study away programs in the U.S. Whitworth faculty lead more than 25 programs over Jan Term, May Term or full semesters. Or, study independently at one of our 150 partner universities around the world. More than half of Whitworth graduates study abroad one or more times.

“My dream job is to be a travel maternity nurse. During Jan Term 2020, I got the opportunity to shadow nurses in a hospital through Whitworth’s Medical Spanish study abroad program in Costa Rica. I had never been more reassured in my pursuit of nursing as my career. I got to step foot in an operating room, witness births, and be exposed to a greater, firsthand understanding of the role and responsibilities of being a nurse. I was immersed in a new culture, and my experience inspired me to grow further in my understanding of cultures that are different from mine that will shape me into the nurse I want to be.”

Connect to Something Greater.

As a Christian university rooted in the grace and truth of Christ, the Whitworth community meets you wherever you are and invites you to develop and deepen your faith in ways you might not expect. Rather than requiring a faith statement, we invite you to seek truth, listen with openness, and connect your faith or worldview commitments to important decisions and lead an integrated life.

Personal faith. Intentional community. We believe that people grow in their relationship with God primarily through human relationships, worship and service. Here are just a few ways to take meaningful steps: Community worship is offered twice each week, along with weekly student-led evening worship services for interested members of the community.

Campus ministry coordinators are student leaders who work within residence halls to provide connection, prayer support and faith enrichment.

Life groups connect students with faculty and staff mentors to discuss faith and build intentional community.

The Young Life leadership program serves hundreds of middle and high school students as well as youth with disabilities.

You belong We strive to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive community that provides connection to people and resources that will help you succeed and find home here. BUCS Bridge supports first-generation students and students from Black, Indigenous and People of Color communities. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Ministries explore faith, mentorship and leadership and extend connection through small groups and special events. Courageous Conversations are workshops and programs that explore challenging social issues through constructive dialogue.

Cultural-Diversity Advocates serve as student-leaders in every residence hall. Global Gateway helps international students and third-culture students transition to Whitworth. ASWU Chartered Clubs include Asian Alliance Club, Black Student Union, Filipino-American Student Association, HOLA (Heritage of Latino Americans), Hawaiian Club, International Club, Pirate Pride, UMOJA African Culture Club and more.

“I attended Whitworth blindly. I had this special tug in my heart that at the time I did not know what it was. Maybe it was the trees, maybe it was the squirrels, but I later learned it was God pulling me to a place filled with people who know and love him as well. He led me 3,000 miles away from Hawaii to come to Whitworth, which I later found out has one of the top education programs in Washington.”

Orientation Week will introduce you to your hall mates and student leadership and provide ways to create new traditions. Go big and attend our back-to-school concert in The Loop (previous performers include Lecrae, Joseph, and Mat Kearney), or keep it low-key with other options like crafts and gaming.
