“One of my favorite things about working on research projects with students is when we dig into topics they find interesting that may not be directly related to my own existing streams of scholarship. These projects provide opportunities for both of us to grow together, because in order to be an effective mentor I may need to expand into areas of literature with which I am not already familiar. It enables me to share the

excitement of discovery with my students and

helps expand my own worldview while helping

them achieve their goals. I appreciate the

pride of ownership students have in the results of these scholarly efforts. DAWN KEIG

Faculty Scholarship at Whitworth Faculty in the arts direct performances, contribute to exhibits, create arrangements for jazz ensembles, and compose hymns. Economists discuss financial literacy among marginalized groups, and educators present their research on the link between literature and social and emotional learning.

WHO WE ARE

The Whitworth faculty comprises 154 Christian teacher-scholars who engage in research, writing, and creative performance to advance their understanding of the world, to enrich their teaching, to share their discoveries, and to bring new information and insights into their classrooms. Organizations beyond our campus recognize the high quality of our faculty scholarship; many support Whitworth research programs. Whitworth faculty members have received grants from a broad range of funders including federal grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. State Department’s Fulbright program; state funding from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction; support from private regional and national foundations such as the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and the Lilly Endowment; and funding from local corporate foundations including Spokane Teachers Credit Union and The Principal Financial.

WHY WE DO IT

At Whitworth, teaching and scholarship are not seen as separate and competing spheres. Faculty members model lifelong learning for our students while staying immersed in the joy of discovery and connected to the broader conversations of their academic disciplines. Some faculty members conduct research and write monographs with their undergraduate students in special research programs that mentor students for graduate study. Some address disciplinary problems from explicitly Christian viewpoints as a unique contribution to discussions in the wider academy. And some aid in the integration of new knowledge into governmental policies and social programs to serve humanity. Regardless of faculty members’ motivation, their dedication leads to a common outcome: the discovery and synthesis of knowledge to serve humanity.

WHAT WE DO

Whitworth faculty members are engaged in a wide array of research programs, creative productions and performances, and scholarly projects. Work in scientific areas ranges from research into complexes with potential anti-cancer activity to assessments of risk profiles for cardiovascular disease among college athletes. Mathematicians investigate Euler’s proof of God, and serve as judges in local math and computer science competitions. Scholars in the humanities publish poetry, examine literature of witness and Christian Pacifism, and explore the nature of perseverance and grit. Theologians discuss various intersections of science and faith, and delve into the effects of consumerism on Christian desire. Social scientists seek to reveal truths about the human condition in every setting from rehabilitation programs in prisons to intentional Christian living communities.

WHY WE WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT IT

The purpose of this annual publication is to share some of the ways in which Whitworth’s faculty contributes to the world of knowledge. In the following pages you will read about recent publications, scholarly presentations, professional service, research grants, fellowships, and awards. While this publication is not comprehensive, it does highlight the breadth and depth of faculty scholarship at Whitworth as it provides a small taste of the fruitful work of the university’s teacher-scholars.

“The opportunity to work with students in real-world research settings such as the courts or in correctional facilities essentially brings all they have studied, debated, and reviewed to life. There are times of disbelief, awe, and appreciation with students as they come to think about the most vulnerable populations in our community through a different lens. They begin to further embrace the mission of Whitworth and serve humanity through a completely different avenue than they had envisioned. Working on actual research projects creates further lines of inquiry and allows students to think about innovation, collaboration, and the use of data in driving decision-making in the social services and criminal justice fields – something that simply cannot not be taught in a textbook. JACQUELINE VAN WORMER Assistant Professor Sociology
